      There are many people who place their insecurities onto others. Some people can drink and not become drunkards, others have to avoid that temptation. However... some people who are self conscious about their own vices try to force others to conform and abstain, even when its not a temptation they struggle with.
      (For example: I confront my parents about drinking a beer once in a while BECAUSE I'm an alcoholic. They don't struggle, but I see it as a threat to me, or just don't understand that they may have never had an issue with alcoholism)

    "Ok, so I have a Power Bonus to hit, and we also have an aura bonus from the cleric, but the boss has an aura negative to hit, but I have combat advantage because flanking.... so.... uh... the hell is my Power to hit right now?"
    "Alright, so we start combat, and the boss has four times as much health as us. What's the worst that can happen?" *6 hours later...* "And we beat the boss."
    A lot of 4e's 'DnD outside of combat' was covered in rituals and the like, and there are even items i've taken (Map to Unseen Lands being my fav). But the big combat bloat with enemies having to many hit points, to many things going on at once (Although I did have one game where almost all combat was 'I sustain' because I had a sustain minor and standard on the field, and it was hilarious). Couple that with the crap shoot that was Character Builder going from easy to use program you can use to "Only online and with silverlight".

      3.5 was pretty accurate if you have a mind to make a god 3.5 is the edition to do it. RAW i made a warlock who could do 216 damage a round lvl 1 (it took 5 rounds of combat building up from 36 at round 1 to get up to that lvl of damage but still)
      At this point I genuinely don't know how much damage my character can do it's up to 72per round per round and he can literally shoot off spells all day, now instead of it capping at a number of rounds i picked up persistent spell, each casting can last 24 hours... quick math makes it look like my character could do over a million damage a round with a full 24 to prep... we aren't even lvl 8 yet
      Admittedly this is a SUPER broken character and that's not including the damage from his pet grey render zombie, his dancing blades which also dance indefinitely, or his sidekick a sentient giant wolf spider who is a caster and significantly broken as well
      Obviously I would never use this level of combat prowess there is literally no situation anyone of my level shpuld need 216 damage or the 432 i got a little later by picking up twined spell like ability, and literally nobody needs to be turning out 1,036,800 damage a round....
      And you don't roll for that damage that's automatic and with surrounding and grappling rules they are near automatic hits
      3.5 is the edition to become gods in and despite how breakable the characters are they are also breakable, like this character has nearly died twice (mostly because I rushed to get my damage up and prioritized getting damage on the field and shaping the combat (the spell used also shapes combat, earthen grasp and the spider uses them to spray a web wall it's great) instead if getting his defenses up)

    • @patrickhickey4047
      @patrickhickey4047 2 года назад +5

      Yep. Everyone hated 4e but if you just give them 4e innovations with "totally not 4e, honest" stamped on it, they really like it.
      4e responded effectively to some flaws in the various 3rd editions. And it incorporated the "we don't need rules to pretend to be an elf so instead of non combat rules here's some Dungeon Master's Manual advice on encourating everyone to behave like an adult at the gaming table" perspective for non combat scenarios, which is honestly what most people use in real life no matter the edition.
      The most ironic thing about the edition wars stuff is that the most valid criticism of 4e never gets made, which is that its just kind of too hard for a lot of people to play. It assumes combat should be a challenging affair with tactical depth where you win if you make good decisions and lose if you make bad decisions, and a lot of tables are just too casual for that. That's the problem you actually experienced at the table with 4e.

    • @sheridanharding8905
      @sheridanharding8905 2 года назад +2

      @@patrickhickey4047 Yes, some valid criticism of 4e!
      The difficulty of combat is a REAL issue with 4e. There's so much you need to know as a player before you can actually participate in combat. It's a great system if everyone knows it, but getting to that point is non-trivial. Even then, though, every combat takes ages to play through. There are no quick-n-easy fights.
      Other criticisms: the bloat and errata. 3.5 had even more bloat, but because 4e frontloaded so many of the choices in character creation, I would see players bogging down before we could even start playing. The progression - The default progression in the game is roughly 10 normal combats (or equivalents) per level. Normal combats that can take 2-4 hours for even a seasoned group. There are 30 levels. Playing at that pace makes the game feel utterly stagnant.
      I say this as a guy who would play/DM 4e in a heartbeat if I could find some experienced and/or enthusiastic players for it. The system really lends itself to super-creative builds and over-the-top animeesque action that I haven't really experienced in 5e, but it has its issues as-written.

    • @FredrickTesla
      @FredrickTesla 2 года назад +4

      People like to shit on 4e, but it has always been the easiest edition to teach to new players. You don't have to explain spell slots. You don't have to look through a massive list of shared spells. Preparing spells isn't a thing. You can relate almost everything to a videogame, and that makes it much easier for most new people to grasp. Plus, the closest thing to a warlord in 5th edition is a Feat, and that's fucking sad.

      Same for 5e, so I don't understand the hatred for 4e but the obsession with 5e. None of the D&D editions support roleplaying because the game itself is a war game, NOT an RPG. It's considered RPG ONLY because there are classes in the game. But there's no actual roleplaying involved whatsoever. By default, social encounters do NOT exist in D&D, because there have never been any written rules to allow them at all. It is up to the DM entirely, which is truly pathetic. Both 4th and 5th editions have rules for social encounters, including awarding XP for completing them, but mainstream 5th edition tends to ignore these rules in favor of improv comedy/roleplay. That's why social skills exist, for instance. Treating the rules as guidelines actually hampers roleplaying in this case because people prefer not to use those mechanics since they feel it limits the fun.

      For 4E, non-combat lived by the rule of "less is more." Having mechanics for narrative interactions just slows the game down.
      As an avid 4E player, I agreed with that take, but weirdly, many of the people who still run 4E seem to try and use as much of the 4E non-combat rules as possible, and inevitably it makes things worse than just relying on fiat.
      That being said, I do understand how people might feel like 4E's approach breaks suspension of disbelief; there's such a "Gameplay and Story Segregation"-y aspect to it, because of how precisely defined combat is and how everything else isn't that if you're not the kind of person that doesn't go for that, it's understandable why you might think 4E doesn't serve you well.

    As it comes to D&D systems, 4th edition is still my favorite.
    4E introduces at-will powers (the equivalent of cantrips for every class), and every class gets a variety of selectable powers.
    Features an extremely balanced class and combat systems, makes it so you (probably) won't die in the first hour of playing.
    I know 4E gets a lot of rag from most D&D players who haven't even given it a chance.

What I find to be funny about this is that, in the very first two editions of D&D, dice didn't even EXIST, meaning that their, "primal," way, despite being very simplistic, still used dice that wouldn't be implemented until 3rd edition at SOONEST. 3.5 allowed you to become an Illithid officially. It was through one of its endless amount of books, where you basically transform over time. Iirc you could also be vampire this way, and Lycan too, but I could be wrong.
      Honestly, 3.5 had better character options because of the books. It definitely is way too much to use all at once, but if you use a few you can easily get unique characters. In 5e, all races are the same now that stat increases no longer exist, and even when they did you only got positives, so your characters are instantly gods just from level 1 since they can't have negative stats anyway. It's truly depressing seeing all the personality from the races being gutted in 5e for literally no reason. A Tiefling should be a Tiefling, not an Orc, and an Orc should be an Orc, not a Gnome.
      If I had the mental capability of learning 3.5s combat system, I would never play 5e again. But because 5e has far less math and is the least complicated system ever, I stick with it. It's the worst for character building and lore since lore no longer exists in the franchise, but it's the only one I can play at all.

      Damn, you encountered a railroader DM. That sucks. :/ I *really* recommend not playing with that DM anymore, ever. What they did was the exact opposite of what a DM *should* do. I'm sorry you had to experience that. D&D is actually a really fun game, as long as both the DM and the other players understand how to properly play it.

    • @holyrod2001

      4th had a major problem with presentation. It used very gamist language rather than natural language and a lot of people didn't like that martial classes could be as effective as spellcasters. 4th was the most robust of any edition for role play and non-combat encounter support, but they presented it very combat first. The combat rules were really good, but weren't laid out well which lead to a lot of really boring encounters run by new refs. Along with that Pathfinder really marketed against it, so most people just see the bad faith memes. What you'll see every person who actually has a good experience with 4th edition say is that all the homebrew fixes people do for 5th edition is to just make it 4th edition with better language

      They sucked too.
      Many ppl bought the shitty expensive books.

      The game was pretty shitty. Ppl could mostly only remember how much $ they spent on shitty expensive books but remnants of how bad the game was left a shitty taste in their mouth. Those are the people that will pre-order 5.5 or 6e ... whichever comes first.

    funnily enough one of the explanations that 3.5 gave for existing was to give the system a little more balance. while the overall power was increased, 3.0 still far surpassed the power scale in certain builds.
    the strongest build ive ever seen was a 100% martial 3.0 build. i just cant imagine it losing to anything that isnt just infinite stats

      It honestly does for me too but in a different way. Its gotten so bad to the point where when I do make an actual ruling from the PHB as a DM my players argue about it and say its super unfair despite it affecting both players and monsters...So then one of them becomes the new DM and showers them with items while running Icewind Dale and they think he is the best thing since sliced bread as they all skip through the game while he has to make up stuff like "The monster uses his legendary resistance to totally negate one of your Gunslinger Fighter's 3 attacks that do 30+ dmg but teleports away still because you used the wild sorcerers magical bullet he made out of chardalyn to get out of line of sight and harass these people upstairs who are now surprised since it had line of sight through a hole in the ceiling of the room your in"

    Is 3.5 Pathfinder is still my favorite format It's so easy to work with and you can do so many different things with it. My friends and I were able to play pokemon campaign We did it in honor of the X and Y video games coming out It was a lot of fun I ended up making it to the elite 4 My percentage dice was really high when I rolled for my starter because we did random starters that weren't the original normal pokemon And I got a shiny poochyena I named her whiskey, And in honor of her every single one I ever caught many of the games ever since then is what I've named that pokemon especially if it's shiny

    5th edition is basically easy rules of 3.5, that is easy to homebrew to 'fix' the game how you want. Really think 5e is possible to be the most balanced edition while still having alot of the greater loved features from previous editions. Buy yeah some fixes are necessary like to poison and subclass features. A few spells are wonky or op, but fixable
