If the fish strips the fly line out of my fingers, she’s going on the reel.

Fighting any size fish and dragging them in quickly, I am no fan of doing. It ruins the fun of catching the fish. It also will lose more fish from breaking off. In addition, is a really bad practice if you use light tippet. Setting the hook like you just hooked Moby Dick is even worse.
Why spend hundreds of dollars for a fishing reel with a smooth drag system and not use it? Landing fish whether they are 3-inches long or 3-feet long is smarter done the same.
You will. Learn more letting fish do what they do, than dragging them in violently causing them to go into shock and dying after you release them that you never see.
Most fish jump early in the fight to free themselves, caused by the panic of being caught. The cause is too much line pressure and most often can break you off. However, if you keep the line tight and apply less pressure the fish will calm down and swim towards the the line pressure to reduce the pressure.
If you hook a fish downstream and it, turns pointing downstream is the worst thing you can do. If it happens to be a Big Steelhead or Salmon, you are going for a long unwanted walk thru places you are not going to enjoy. I saw it happen hundreds of times and enjoy watching my fishing pressure disappear from sight. It is almost as fun to see as catching fish yourself.😅🤣😂

I've got a bazillion hours fighting fish on a fly rod. Why anyone would think there MIGHT be a reason to not put a fish on the reel as soon as convenient, beats me. Now, I see the best fly fishermen in the world, the FIPS international competitors, often not putting fish on the reel at all - but those will be small fish, and stripping in line is faster than reeling, and speed counts in competition. In other words those are conditions in which putting fish on the reel is not convenient. If it's a big and hot fish that runs more or less at you, then there is another situation when stripping in is the only practical option, temporarily. Anyway, one more video of non-important info making fly fishing appear more 'technical' than it is.

totally agree. I have 60 years fly fishing experience and lose less medium and large by going to reel smoothly and quickly.
