I've heard of this happening before; I believe it was Frank Yee. had both portulicaria Afra and Chinese elm that has similar reactions and he wound up composting them but when he went to check on them, they developed a corky bark and now both plants are exceedingly popular for bonsai.

I'll have to look him up and see! That would be pretty cool if my tree turned into a cork bark. I've always wanted one.

Whatever that insecticide was, it sounds a bit scary. Glad it bounced back.

Looks like a very fast vigorous growing tree, don't know if we have any type of ash trees in my country. But the leaflets grows like our sausage tree of South Africa. Trying any native trees to be bonsai. Every time I prune my trees I always stick the cuttings in soil, if they root is n bonus, for backups. Was grown from seed or did you bought it as nursery stock?

I have an Arizona Ash tree (at least it was sold to me as Arizona Ash seeds) but the growth is so weird on it I honestly can't tell. It's very similar to what you show here, it also didn't fully lose all it's leaves over the winter, which was another head scratcher. I dont think I used any insecticides though. Ill try to remember to post a video later on.
Edit: Actually it's in the video I uploaded earlier this year. The only video on my channel, at 19:08 You can see the weird growth

I just watched your video, and it does look like a very similar leaf situation! Great collection by the way.

@@BonsaiBoise yeah it has like 3 or 4 very small bud growth at each node. It has done that since it started growing... I know last year i used a systemic insecticide on other trees, i dont specifocally remwmber using it on the ash, but its bonide and the main ingredient is imidacloprid. Im curious if thats what you used too.
Why thank you. Everything is fairly young, just started the hobby a few years ago, so hopefully it improves over time.

@skrounst The stuff I used was called Z one from Zamzows. Looks like the main ingredient is "Bifenthrin".

@@BonsaiBoise Huh, interesting. Not the same, but if I did use it on my ash it's weird how just the ash was affected... Well when I repot next year Ill have to keep an eye on it see if it starts growing more normally. Thanks man!

@@skrounst It is interesting that both of our Ash trees were effected this way. I had thought mine was the only one. I posted a video of a silver Maple that was also effected. It was back in August 2019 I think. Anyways, good luck on yours, I hope it grows through it!

That's interesting! I never heard of this before so I went down a rabbit hole on it. However, I actually think mine might've been due to something called "witches broom". That was also a new thing to me!

I think you used radioactive pesticide.

I'm still hoping I'll gain some super powers. So far, nada.
