- How to repair a white screen Asus VG278 monitor.
MOSET is location Q308 has shorted and cause the SMD fuse to blow. This is all on the LCD flex board (T-con built into the LCD flex).
The original mosfet is a part number 12H34
I replaced it with a AO3400 AO9T Specs: N-Channel, VDS 30V, ID 5.7 A Package SOT-23 Наука
Jeff, the fuse blown up was an 0603 smd ? thx for your help
I didn't measure but that sounds about right.
@@jeffescortlx we fix it !!! Thank you so much for making this video. You are a true hero. I can't afford buying a new one in my country, it's to expensive, so we risk it and it works.
@@RoshGG This is exactly why I take the time to make these videos. Makes me very happy to hear someone was able to fix one and put it back into use!
@@jeffescortlx I got one on ebay, however, I don't think I'll ever gonna use 100 pieces that I bought lol. Thank you again, I am very appreciate your help.

No bullshit...no 20 minutes explaining the issue...just a quick "This is what happens...this is the fix" in short order...Jeff, keep up the good work!
Thank you. I appreciate videos that are straight to the point with minimal fluff. So that's how I make them. I typically take out mid-roll ads too.
I am envious of your ability to find and repair faults like this, with what appears to be no repair schematics. I aspire to learn to do this with my own stuff.
I've just gotten so use to never having access to schedmatics I've formed trouble shooting habits to work around that to figure stuff out. Chasing down shorts is pretty straight forward. Other repairs are more difficult.
@@jeffescortlx I think watching videos like yours helps, because if I was presented that issue, I'd be lost. Checking for a short would not have come to me. I do it as a hobbyist thing, fixing old computers, so I got a long way to go.
Another great repair. Great job brother 👊🏼
Jeff you are the truth!! Avid follower of your channel!!
Mad skills! Well done sir!
I am pretty good with a soldering iron, but the tiny SMD always give me trouble. Especially desoldering is tricky for me.

Very impressive!
Thanks for making this video, dude! it's helped me to diagnose an LG 27GK750F-B that suffers from the same problem. They quoted me £230 for repair service but after removing said mosfet, all the shorts are gone! great stuff, man
Sweet. It must share the same LCD panel. Glad to hear it helped!
Yes so far from what I'm seeing they use the same board
I just experienced that today on my LG 27GK750F-B. Did it make a coil whine noise? I tried to get to the daughter board but stripped one screw.
@@nhozdien5058 yep! those were the symptoms on mine too. I think the noise comes from something vibrating on the main circuit board when that power rail goes into short circuit.
For what it's worth, you might be able to work past that stripped screw if you carefully drill it down so that the head comes away and you can continue working from there. Mine failed again pretty quickly when I used A09T MOSFETs so I bought some 12H34s from aliexpress and those worked great for me. I've since doubled the recorded working hours on the monitor and I've had no problems at all :) Well worth the time if you can do it
@@ndrewwb hey, thank for the reply. Finally got time to open the striped screws. Turn out, I wasn’t that lucky. I got at least 8 shorted capacitors, and the said faulty 12h34 mosfet 😢 Some of those cap is extremely tiny, like less than 0.5mm, and I don’t think i can replace those. Probably try out local electronic repair, if their quote is as high as LG from what you said, i will buy another used 240hz monitor from amazon.
Batteries for the Dyson V6 vacuum cleaner frequently have BMS board problems. If you could make a video fixing the BMS board at the component level it would be a big winner!
Well done :-D, A handy monitor saved from the dumpster of dooooom :-D
Because so many fail, it makes me wonder if they selected an under rated mosfet on purpose.
I would be trying to bodge a much bigger mosfet in there or near.
I never liked the idea that transistors are supposed to be boiling, it's not a tube or valve.
Don't forget to get the cat to do a final inspection :-D
I agree, the engineer may have under sized the part or the purchasing department saved a buck on counterfeit parts. The cats are on time out from my office for misbehaving lol. Now they just sit at the door and meow.
@@jeffescortlx Yep cats are like that lol, they will try to make you feel bad and wear you down.

How's going? It happened to me 2 hours ago
The day i got my IPC-7711 training at work, my screen has this issue. what are the chances... i guess i can put my soldering skills to the test
I'd like to find the same one as the newly attached fuse. What can I find out?
Having a similar issue with an Asus 3d Vision that was second hand gifted to me.
Turns on then rapidly whites out then turns off, back on, repeat
Rather than go pay for a repair or replacement (since this thing is apparently like a couple hundred bucks to buy new),
Would you know if I can fix it as well with the same steps?
TV, Laptop or car, Best Practices work. What do I mean? Confirm the complaint, next do some simple checks while getting a lay of the circuit(s). Do a good visual as you may see the possible problem like signs or hot areas or discolored spots, replace the obvious but check to see if the problem is still there and confirm the part you removed is good or bad. This helps with confidence to move forward as you said, “Something made the fuse open”.
Follow the circuit, simple quick test as the DMM on diode setting produces some voltage as diodes have a 0.7 volt drop. The mosfet is used as a switch & 95% are “N” channel type. If the numbers can be read, chances are you can find it or specs to help get a different brand. If in doubt, always go slightly bigger in amps, voltage or both. I miss the days the diagrams was on paper and under the back cover. At least many print it on the PC board. Nicely done.
Dear Jeff
Thanks for your generosity sharing your knowledge and experience with so many other folks like myself.
God bless you!
I have an ASUS VS24A with very similar problem - black screen, no logo, but when connected though a HDMI cable to a laptop, the computer recognizes the monitor, however no images are shown
ASUS has suggested me to take it to an authorized shop but the cost was higher than a new monitor in Brazil.
The problem started some 2 years ago when it went black and standby led was not turning on.
I checked the power suply and replaced some inflated capacitors, a Mosfet 70Amps etc
The standby light now turns on, backlight lamps are lit, etc but no images are formed
I cheched the voltages goint to the ribbon cables tha connects to the monitor circuitry and the voltages there are 1.3xx Volts not 12V
Without the schematicas (denied by ASUS) I have no clues as to what voltages should be supplied form the power supply board to the video card. There should be a 12V going through?
Could you please offer some help?
Thanks in advance and again congrats on the nice job
Sorry I'm not familiar with that problem with that model. You will need to either do some deeper trouble shooting or try replacing the main board and or t-con.
*Great job like always!* Recently picked up TV that someone was giving away due to the half screen backlight was out. TV was used outside, therefore got some oxidation on the LED strips. Few solder points later I have a working TV with a free Netflix account (since the previous owner never logged out from the app :) ).
Fixing free stuff is great!!
Just fixed 2 Samsung tvs that were being tossed. One had a bad Wi-Fi card that I simply disconnected the other had some blown caps on the power supply board.
@@sjn7220 I've heard about the Samsung TV with the wi-fi board that shorts out the 5v rail, but I haven't come across any my self yet. It's a nice feeling taking trash and making it useful again.
@@jeffescortlx Yeah, I found this on the curb with a sign taped to it that said it turns off while watching. I though it might be bad caps but they looked fine. I noticed every time I went to the on-screen wifi settings the tv would lock up or turn off. I then looked at the wifi card and it was pretty warm to the touch and looked discolored. Disconnected it and now have no problem with it; have it hooked up to a roku.
As you said, I find it super satisfying to fix broken things. I've even fixed many things I have no use for just for the joy of it. But, I'm only an amateur, educated on RUclips.
I was wondering if you have ever worked on a Kenwood double din receiver with navigation? The reason I am asking is because there are a lot of us that have this unit and from what I can tell is the Garmin Navigation board is causing the unit to stay in standby mode. I have found where one youtuber has taken the board out and refloated the chips and it starts working after that.
Sounds like the Chrysler radio.
Tried it and didn't work! Replaced the fuse and Q308 and now the screen flashes white instead of solid white... Feels like an "almost" working.
Tried my luck with Q303 as well and didn't affect the behaviour.

Hi my HP 25x 144hz monitor got a similar problem but its not just white screen when you start mine was flickering and lines are appeared for 2 sec and goes back normal after 20 sec the screen turns white . if you know the problem please help me
Hi Jeff! Thanks for this video. I've started opening my monitor but sadly the problem seems different. My fuse "beeps" but the 3legged thingny is all shorted to grown. Is it possible that id only have to replace it? (i think you said it's called a moset.)
If the MOSFET shows any shorts between two legs you'll want to investigate and/or replace it.
Thanks for the video. I had the same problem and had to replace q308 and q9(because it was literally melted) with a a09t. I also replaced the fuse at f001, but i am still getting a white screen. Im getting no continuity issues at the screen pcb. Any tips for what else could be the issue?
Have you confirmed that the power supply is working and that power is making its way to the places it's supposed to be?
What kind of chip fuse do you use?
Great video. Working on the same monitor. I had to replace Q9 on the main board ( was incinerated, could not read p/n ) . C334, C338, C806 were shorted too on the screen's pcb. Removing C338 ( tiny black component , measures 0 ohm ) there was no more short on C344 and C806. Replacing Q308, F001 as you did , I get steady 12V on the screens's pcb, and these voltages : 1.24V on L302, 0.86v on L304, 3.3v on L305, 0.0V on L308, 0.09V on L307, 11.92V on L301. It is obvious not all voltages are correct , and there is still no picture , backlight only. If someone has more info , please comment.
What part number did you use for Q308?

Hey, I replaced the blown fuse on my and the transistor, but still a white screen. However, the fuse doesn't blow when I turn it on? Have I perhaps messed up something when soldering?
You might have a different issue going on.
SUPER!!
I have a 27" Nixeus 240hz that has a white screen with only power connected. No start up logo. Is there a chance it could be the power supply? Or is it internal hardware damage for sure? If it's the latter I'm just going to scrap it since I got a few years out of it. If it could be a power supply then I'll replace it. The green light on the power brick shows solid green LED but I'm not sure if that's indicative of it working correctly. And it's the same price to buy a voltmeter as it is a new PSU.
It is probably not the power supply. This sounds like an internal issue.
@@jeffescortlx I found my multimeter and the power brick is fine. Definitely an internal issue. Thanks.

Mouser, digi-key, element 14/Newark or eBay.
I have the same exact problem is it possible to use a bigger transistor I have a couple I could take off of something but I don't know if I can use a different size transistor?
The physical shape and size isn't critical. You just need to make sure the characteristics/specifications and pin out are the same.
Hey Jeff, I have the same Asus monitor as yours but my problem isn't a white screen. Instead the screen is very very dim to almost no display when I turn it on. Is it probably caused by the shorted MOSFET or any idea on how to fix a very dim LCD monitor?
Probably has nothing to do with the mosfet. Check the back lighting LEDs.
@@jeffescortlx I just check the board of the monitor. The component on R805 has burnt. Do you perhaps have the schematics of the board or do you know what specific component is that?
@@ezurakuro sorry but I do not have a schematic for this and my monitor is no longer taken apart so I don't know what that component is.
Can I grab the fuse and mosfet part from another monitor? Any old monitors use something similar?
It's possible, but no guarantee you'll find something compatible at random. The parts are available through typical electronics vendors. More details in the description.
What are the specifications of the fuse that you used to replace the old fuse?
That fuse should be a 0603 SMD 2.5a. Has an O designation on it.
Great video.

More details are in the video description.
my monitor will come on eventuall,y but it's like starting a banger, the monitor will attempt to turn on then blink off but over time it warms up and then finally will stay on
I am assuming it's some if not almost all the capacitors running on dead. which i assume should be easy to repair but this is an assumpton, the screen does go white but not always. it mainly shows asus logo for a split second then blacks out for 10 to 30 seconds. then trys again each time the logo will stay on a microsecond longer till it blinks for 2 seconds then shows a desktop then after 3 more blinks it stays on desktop .
I have the HE version of this monitor need to know how to tear it down tho.
It's been a while since I've had one of these apart, but I think the bezel just snaps on. So you might just have to carefully use a spudger to unclip the bezel if you can't find any screws.
Can you tell me what is on the Q9 position on the motherboard? Thank you!

Hi I have an LG 240hz display that has the same brand of panel, so the same kind of T-CON board (27m14-c05) and it has this issue. The fuse on 12v was never blown and still reads just okay but the same q308 mosfet is the problem causing shorts to ground. I have changed out the damaged 12h34 for a A09T like in the video, once its removed all shorts are gone but when the display is turned on the mosfet suffers a drain + source short and blows, with the white screen problem repeating itself. I've tested the blown mosfets after removing them and the gate doesnt have a short, just the drain and source. I also tested other components around the P303-19 for shorts or damage but everything seems to be reading just fine so I dont know why it keeps on blowing. i also have tested the monitor mainboard without the panel connected and the 12 volts reads good. may I need to try a different type of mosfet? and do you have any recommendation? thank you

Can the transistor short out even though the fuse is still good?
It's possible, if something else in the line acted as the fuse, or if for some reason the conditions are right and the power supply can't make enough power to blow the fuse.
Check the transistor with diode mode on a DMM and see if it's fishy.

You can't fix a pixel. You have to buy a new monitor if it bothers you too much.

Sorry I don't know what is wrong with yours.
I just swapped the parts and it still doesn’t work. I am on the verge of just tossing it away now. Must be numerous problems that could cause it. :(

"O" is 2.5 amps according to a previous comment.
@@jeffescortlx Thanks for answering my comment. I also want to try to fix my monitor with the same model, and I just want to make sure the parts that I will be buying are correct. I think the original mosfet is P5002CMG, but I can't find it in online shops, so I'm going to use the ones that you used to replace the mosfet.
