one of the things that sucks about this is that australia’s only big major that attracts international players, battle arena melbourne, has been screwed over. it’s over the same weekend as dreamhack dallas and a lot of the players who had announced they were going to attend have cancelled and are going to dallas instead. pretty rough for our region.

My personal opinion is that competitors should take advantage of this while it's here, because I don't see this as permanent FGC money. I think Saudis investing heavily in Esports right now is a political move to try and increase goodwill and positive perception of their region, similar to Qatar bidding super high to host the FIFA world cup. I doubt they actually want to seriously forward esports, and I highly doubt that they'll keep investing money here for a long term. The rushed nature of this whole thing, the extremely lax qualifications of just Top 8 instead of a circuit of tourneys, leads me to believe they wanted this out quick, not put out something very well structured.
Competitors should definitely do their best to take advantage of these situations while they're here IMO. They may get a few more chances at this money, but I doubt this is the future of esports like it's being made out to be. The tournament won't change the future of esports, but it can definitely change the future of people who place well in the FGC, and that should be a good reason to try and qualify.

Saudi Arabia is going to keep doing this as long as it buys them goodwill. And with most other countries behaving so badly nowadays, they might actually get some goodwill. If they just allowed gay people to be gay, most other countries wouldn't have a leg to stand on whilst criticising them.

The simple fact is that other than a tiny handful of players, most fighting game competitors don't make anywhere near enough money where turning down opportunities like this is really viable. I'm all for taking a moral stand on something but you have to pick your battles.

They're doing it in all sports. Everything is going to be run by infinite money Arabs in Saudi and Qatar and UAE eventually if nothing is done. I don't blame the individual competitors, especially FGC people because it's not exactly a lucrative venture for 99% of them, but the already mega rich athletes and sports leagues selling out is disappointing to say the least.

For a sense of scale, if you have $10 billion, then giving random $10,000 rewards is like having $100,000 and handing out $.10 rewards. To the uber rich those sorts of supplementary payouts are literally nothing. Just worth keeping in mind the scale.

To improve its reputation, especially to the Western world, Saudi Arabia has heavily invested in various athletic organizations and events, a practice often referred to as “sportswashing.” This exercise, particularly when used by state-run groups, is considered a form of propaganda to distract the public from its abuses."
make no mistake what this is. it is saudi propaganda and they know ppl will look the other way if it means they have a shot at being rich. they know it's all good as long as they throw enough money around, and the talk will be about how the competitors' lives will be changed and not how atrocious human rights are in saudi arabia.

But it is good to inform people to at least empower them to make informed choices. That being said, it would be nice to see other countries and/or big organizations take a similar interest in esports to provide other options and competition. And while that government may have plenty of issues, there are still good people living within that country that like fighting games as well. So it's nice for that portion of the fgc too.

Gamers8 was undoubtedly a good event for a spectator. I personally dont like the ESWC (or whatever) because a lot of the best players at some fighting games are not guaranteed safety there. The Middle East has become super strong players who have visa issues often. I wish i could see the real best of the best go to a region with strong players like that and compete. Regardless, I've seen this motivate some players who haven't competed in a long time pop their heads up. I hope in the future we can have a tournament with a big prize with the best players coming together and not being gated by visa issues (see Arslan ash) or laws of a country.

  • @lot8113
    @lot8113 2 месяца назад +43

For the uninitiated, it's not about how members of the FGC get treated as they get there. That is a concern of course for the affected people, and should be the first question for those who are looking to attend, but even if all is right with that - even if the event is well run, even if they treat everyone well, even if it feels authentic - that's not the deeper issue.
The deeper issue is that the money is an investement, as they are pushing tourism and immigration into a theocracy that employs modern-day slaves and suppresses civil rights for its citizens.
I personally have a very broad range of philosophical compatibilities, so I'm not necessarily outraged by every aspect of it (even though I most definitely am by some), but it's important to keep in mind that even if we find the event fun to watch, the staff welcoming and the place awesome, none of these (no-doubt very important aspects) answer to the qualms one might have about the situation.
Regardless, I am absolutely not judging anyone who decides to attend, as each person's financial situation and moral standards are different (and no, I'm not a moral relativist but it's hard to explain why it doesn't matter here). I just think it's important to bring up the deeper moral issues as well as the safety/treatment/sustainability ones, if we are to mention the possible troubles connected to associating with the Saudi governament.

Best I can say is that I hope people have fun competing, that Brian qualifies, and that people still know that Saudi Arabia is a terrible place at the end of the day. I honestly hope this publicity stunt backfires on the Saudis, and that having more people and eyes there and on them exposes it more in the long run. I also hope everyone stays safe. I imagine the competitors will be sequestered to a sanitized area and not allowed to leave it, but if that doesn't happen or they can leave, I hope they stay safe.

The golden era was the SFIV peak era before CPT existed where top guys were traveling seemingly every weekend, sometimes to what looked like someone's basement, to play tournaments where the audience was two feet from the players and the commentators were just whoever was available at that particular time.

By all means, go and get the bag, but understand that it revokes your ability to be a serious person when it comes to campaigning for equality and human rights. If you're openly putting a price tag on these principles, then you've effectively sold off any right you had to an opinion worth listening to on the subject - unless it's a negative one, I guess. However, if you don't care and/or don't want to get involved, then fair enough, do what you want. It's your personal freedom.

Hi Brian, I'm a long time viewer of your channel, and I'd consider myself a fan. I was in the chat watching this video being made on stream. I don't know if you read your youube comments, and I'm not sure if you're going to see this, but this video is disappointing to me as a supporter of yours. I'd go so far as to say it is irresponsible.
Events funded by Gamers8 are *quite literally* being funded by the Saudi government directly to *quite literally* help the state of Saudi Arabia move away from an oil based economy and into an economy that profits off of sports, entertainment, and infrastructure as part of their 2030 plan. This is a plan by the Saudi Arabian government to make the country appealing as a tourist destination, which is why the finals for all these eSports events take place in Saudi Arabia. These are all facts. I don't think it's too much of a reach to suggest, as many many others have in various esports and sports communities around the world have already suggested that this is a form of sportswashing as you mention in the video, meaning the government is using the positive press generated from tournaments like these to shift the public perception of the state. The prince of Saudi Arabia was even quoted last year saying "I will continue doing sport washing".
You've really got to ask the question Brian, why would the government of Saudi Arabia spend this much on press? The answer is that they really need it. They have incredibly discriminatory laws against women, kill gay people for the crime of loving others, kill hundreds of Ethiopan migrants and and asylum seekers at the Yemen border, kill journalists who criticise the government, jail people who tweet about criticising the government and so much more. You say in the video that "all sources of money have problems", which is true to an extent, but a really bold claim when comparing the funding coming from a video game company or tech conglomerates for a source of revenue to a government that is looking to sweep their human rights violations under the rug by adding a bunch of 0's onto a big check for playing street fighter.
Your video effectively does what the Saudi Arabian government is aiming to accomplish through pumping these tournaments full of money. You spend the majority of the video comparing the amount of money Gamers8 is providing compared to Capcom, and then at the end you extol the past events for treating the players and staff correctly. The majority of the issues you bring up are whether the money is going to the wrong places, whether the FGC is being scammed in some way, which is a miniscule concern in the grand scheme of things. The world where Gamers8 is scamming the players and commentators is a far better world than if Gamers8 uses these tournaments to create great tournaments that aid the monstrous government it is being funded by, because at least in the reality where it's a scam, the FGC would stop blindly following this money. By talking about this tournament in a majority positive way, without speaking about the true issues of Saudi funding, and by ending the video by saying you are likely going to attend the tournament, you are providing PR and I'm not sure that you realise how hurt some members of your community, and the FGC as a whole will be by doing this.
It's not the end of the world here. I'm not just going to leave it there. I'm disappointed Brian, but you said yourself in the video that you haven't done the research and that research should absolutely have been done before you made a video like this. That's fair. I even understand the possibility you are staying out of learning about the situation so as to wash your hands clean of the morality on the possibility that you can make it into the tournament finals for that life changing money. I don't agree with that decision, but I understand it, it is completely Life Changing money.
What I'm really sad about here is that you've always been a voice of reason in the FGC to me, someone who really seeks to understand the various topics you've talked about over the years, and give level headed analysis on, even changing your opinions if new information came out. When you started talking about this tournament on stream I genuinely thought for a moment you would use this opportunity to speak out on the highly problematic nature of tournaments from Gamers8 do the scene, since so many respected public figures in the FGC don't speak out about them, in part due to the potential money they can gain by not speaking out. You can still make that video Brian! Many in the scene would appreciate it! A voice as large as yours would go a long way. You can even still watch the tournaments and talk about them as well, it's so much better than doing what you are currently doing.
If, instead, you have decided that the chance at the money is worth more to you than certain members of the FGC and of your community, then hey, I get it. I don't fuck with it. I do get it. At the very least, if you're going to take the money, please stop providing Gamers8 with such glowing press while talking about their events. You can talk about the players, the storylines the gameplay without talking about the production and the money funded directly by a monstrous government. I hope you read this, I hope you're having a good day, and I hope you do the research into the Saudi Arabian government and its direct ties to Gamers8 and these events. I hope you can be a voice of reason in the community.
