  • A more modern Miss Marple, The Twinkly Miss Marple, The 21st century Miss Marple - all these catch phrases are firmly attributed to the very special impersonation of this iconic character by this British actress with an elfin face and baby voice. Agatha Christie’s female sleuth brought her worldwide fame in her 70s, yet, shockingly, she decided to quit the signature part when at the peak. Why so? This video tells the intriguing life story of Geraldine McEwan.

Thank you for this tribute. Geraldine McEwan is one of my all time favorites. I have seen Mapp and Lucia and laughed myself silly. Being very fond of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, I found Geraldine to be the best and most alive and interesting Miss Marple of all. In so many of the rolls she played, the twinkle in her eye gave me a feeling that mirth was a guiding light in her soul...and, always, she exuded composure and eccentricity...what a combination of traits! I loved her dearly.

Geraldine McEwan was sublime. I can see why she and Maggie Smith drew comparisons- but their unique qualities outnumber their similarities.

Geraldine McEwen was my perfect Miss Marple! Joan Hickson never appealed to me (and I don't even consider the other two). You could imagine people opening up to Geraldine and sharing gossip and secrets. Not Joan - too strait-laced, too sensible. It made sense for Geraldine's Miss Marple to be inquisitive and adventurous and somehow able to get herself involved in other people's mysteries.

Geraldine McEwan was far and away the best Marple. I am so sorry she didn't do more of them. She infused the character with a genial humanity and intelligence that went a long ways towards explaining why her character could look at people and situations and see them so clearly. So I'm assuming she had that in her as well. Great breadth of acting talent as well when you consider her humane, gentle work in Miss Marple beside her over the top , tour de force work in Mapp and Lucia.

Geraldine McEwan had an etheral yet pointed acting style and her "Miss Marple" was most engaging for me, irrespective of the series style and a little too full of well known TV stars + actors otherwise... I actually found her Marple less formal, more realistic, albeit a quirky to almost eccentric everyday Country Village elderly spinster. Her slight build etc contrasted the character's sleuth mind and her playful wit brought about familiarity... She would've been a marvellous large screen Marple, though her wardrobe would've required a bit more tweed etc but that's also why she embodied a different Marple too, as she looked like an elderly old fashioned spinster living as a normal village resident in contrast her character's sleuthing magnificence.

I don't look ke her as much as Joan Hickson's, her Miss Marple always seems to have a smirking, sardonic look. I prefer Joan's sweeter, gentler exterior with a sharp mind underneath.

I’ll tell you why she stopped…. It is because she was completely out of her depth playing the role, constantly slurring her words and needing prompting, but worst of all she was a woman of ill repute carrying on an intrigue with a married soldier.

McEwan and Hickson are my 2 favorite Marples. Altho different from each other, and I must give the nod of faithfulness to the books to Hickson, I did find McEwan's twinkle to be engaging and refreshing. Also, I never realized the roles she played in other movies (Henry V and Robin Hood), even tho when I saw those films, her characters (brief as the roles were) stood out memorably.
I never enjoyed the Americanization of Marple by Lansbury. And I can't abide the bluster of Margaret Rutherford stomping about and mugging for the camera. Those films are, IMO, totally unwatchable.

It's very curious my feelings about McEwan's depiction of Miss Marple. I most certainly like the actress and her style in other roles. But I can't stand her in the role of Miss Marple. I tried to watch it a couple of times and it was her scenes that made me stop watching it. There are stellar actors in the whole show and the production is perfect, but she ruins it for me. I could say it's the modernisation of her that I dislike, but I actually like the Margaret Rutherford depiction also, Magaret Rutherford is NOTHING like the book character, but I forgave her. It's a shame really. I think it would have been pleasant to watch had they taken a different path with Marple's character. So I'm glad she's not doing it any more. In my opinion and also in Agatha Christie's opinion Joan Hickson is the closest to the book character, she conveys the sharp intellect and complex relationships with the police, a slight irritation and disrespect which grows into more of a Sherlock Holmes regard. So I don't agree with your preference for her in the role. Each to their own though. Ha! speaking of Kenneth Brannagh, he is also destroying Agatha Christie works. I saw his Murder on the Orient express with the much beloved Johnny Depp. Again wrong wrong. Perhaps the latest one he's done. I read the story about the seance, but I think he's made it more interesting, I hope so.

Having read all the Miss Marple books, Geraldine McEwan is not my idea of Marple. McEwan is a good actress, but I feel she was miscast. To me, Joan Hickson is the most like Miss Marple in Christie novels.

Even Agatha Christie said Joan Hickson ‘was’ Miss Marple. I didn’t care for Ms McEwan as Miss Marple and the characters in Mapp And Lucia were both insufferable. Different strokes for different folks. 😊

I don't like Geraldine's Miss Marple, she makes Miss Marple appear to be a spiteful busybody . Whereas Joan Hickson , her interpretation feels right. I would trust her Miss Marple to tell her any problems I may have. This is not to say that Geraldine isn't a good actress, just me expressing my preference

dignity and subtle nuances of Ms. Hobsons performances as Miss Marple.

For me, no one will ever touch Joans portrayal. But I think I would have like Geraldines a bit more if not for the flavor of the show itself. It was just too contemporary, too 'perky'. It and Geraldine reminded me more of Murder She Wrote than any of Christie's books. But for people who never read or aren't interested in reading Christie, I would probably recommend Geraldine. As for fellow readers, its Joan, 100%. I will never get tired of re-watching Joan as Miss Marple

While GM was born to play Lucia she was woefully miscast as Miss Marple. She didn't seem to remember she was playing a canny and crafty old lady and not E.F. Benson's arch and soigné protagonist. There are just some roles you have to leave to the better actress and that would be Miss Hickson, as was attested to by Agatha Christie herself. Case closed.

Certainly loved Geraldine McEwan as Miss Marple; however, you did a disservice by failing even to mention Julia McKenzie as Marple, who (imo) gave a very subtle, less theatrical, more credible portrayal of Marple. I loved Angela Lansbury, but NOT playing Marple as caricature. Thx for McEwan bio! She is missed.❤
