Cam, I'm so proud of you!!! I've been sober for 6 months now & I even though I still have my problems and don't feel 100% good about my mental health, I think stop drinking really changed my life for the better. Congratulations!!!
Your intentions are always pure. Your daughters are lucky to be in your care. You love them purely.
Never too late in the year to start gardening. What growing zone are you in? I think the ulamac or something website can tell you that for US zones.
This time of year it actually great for starting a new garden as you plan out what you want to have in your garden.
You can grab a sketchbook or just any paper and draw out the shape of your garden. Put down any permanent markers for trees and like permanent structures and stuff, like flowering plants you like. I have a cheap version of your journal and i did most of my drawings on it using the lines as guides.
- Think about where your sun rises and sets in relation to your gardening space. You want your warm weather crops like tomatoes, peppers, aubergines/ egg plants, squashes, etc in full sun. If you live in a hot place like zone 9a +, you might need to add shade cloth to your shopping list or plant them in partial shade.
- Think about where and what kind of space you want for you kids to play in.
For us, we wanted a lawn and a sand pit in the shaded area of our London based Zone 9a garden during summer. We are South West facing looking out to our garden. So the lawn is in the middle and left side we have the sand pit and plants that don't like too much sun. Our main veggie beds and containers are on the right, so they get full sun (sometimes too much!).
- Think about what type of garden for growing you want, like a border garden, separate raised beds, containers. It all depends on what space you have.
I would just start jotting things down and drawing out something.
- Don't forget to add flowers or things that you enjoy. I have added a lot that provides me with different flowers throughout the year.
Some flowers like marigolds, nasturtiums, lavender also help with pest prevention. Rosemary and mint are herbs and probably technically lavender too but pests often don't like the smell of them. I also plant garlic next to where i intend to plant my tomatoes to offer some pest protection early doors.
Depending on your first frost date, if you have one in your area, you can start to think of what you want to plant now. For me it's usually the first week of Jan.
We like garlic and it is the start of garlic planting season for some. I don't plant mine until the beginning of Dec but be sure to check your dates and the type of garlic you are growing. Be sure to break up the garlic bulbs into separate cloves/ wedges, not peeling the skins before planting and pointy side up.
Hard neck is usually better in cooler climates but you can keep them in the fridge for about 6 weeks or so before planting to get the cold affect. Soft neck garlic, is better for warmer climates. Hard neck garlic has scapes (flower stems) that you can eat before harvesting and the bulbs are stronger in flavour but soft neck varieties are generally bigger and can be stored for longer. @TheRipeTomatoFarms just did a video about this and has some great tips in general.
You can learn about seed starting over the cooler months but there is nothing wrong with starting off by buying some plant starts.
Some of the things that can be either grown indoors or outdoors atm in all climates:
- Herbs
- Brassicas
- Salads
- Micro greens
It is all a personal choice and i would say as a big rule of thumb, is always start with things that you like to eat.
Don't get bummed out if something dies. Learn what works well in your garden or house where there is light, or you can get indoor uv lights.
Save your cardboard/ amazon boxes as you can place them down to plan out the garden and start to block out the weed area for your beds. You can water them down so they don't blow away and add compost a bit at a time to start forming your beds.
You can think about side structures according to your budget but for now, you want to just start on stopping weeds and grass and encourage the worms to come up and help set the area up.
I got a birthday card this year that said "gardening is therapy but you get tomatoes"! This is so true! It did make me laugh though as i keep saying i am the crazy plant lady as i do talk a lot about it and you probably will go home with a plant, fresh veg or a jar of home produce! lol
P.s. I think i had that same brown waist coat top but in black like many others in the 90's. It was a All saint's thing too. I also loved The Cure.

if you like to write, you could write letters to your future self to open at a certain moment, or even better, to your girls to open at a specific moment in their lives where they gonna need this letter from their mom living this same situation. Idk if that makes sens but I do that and it’s so exciting get to read your past self tell you how she is and what she did..❤

It's true I do know many people who call themselves sober but get high every day. That's not sobriety. That's being alcohol-free.
@@maryannscott5567 ok who cares, people typically say they’re sober when they’re not using their *drug of choice*, it’s very common. It doesn’t mean you’re completely sober of all substances, there’s a different name for that, that’s called straight edge.

Good on you, Cam. It sounds like it is easier on you and the kids for you not to drink. I love live music too. Concerts, festivals etc. are IT - I enjoyed it a lot as a young adult. And I still enjoy it. Loving the fact that Coco loves Boys Don't Cry and the Cure. They have been a fave of mine since way back. Particularly the songs Caterpillar and Love Cats. 🌵💗🌞😾

im about the same amount sober. i don’t even drink really. i had one drink three months ago; it reacted badly with my antidepressant and i went into psychosis. woke up the next week in the hospital. i almost died. from ONE drink.
