Hearing you talk about the old beauty vlogs reminded me why i couldnt get into any others-- I only liked yours LOL. everyone else seemed a bit pretentious. Wait, who is that that was lucky enough to not experience pink foam rollers? they must have had super curly hair LOLOLOL.
My best friend used to use these back in college (we are AFAM and have straight hair). I had never seen them before I saw her with them. She would put them in her dry hair, put a shower cap on, and then go shower. like steam it in place to do a gentle curl.

I forgot I have some of those in my linen closet. I'll have to try them again. My bad hair memory is, even though I wash my hair, I still have the hair crease where my rubber band was.
