I like how everyone is expecting him to be this cruel and sadistic king that would have other's tortured or killed on a whim but when they meet him they realize that he is pretty kind and reasonable unlike his subordinates who are very evil cruel and sadistic and when he show's that he can be kind and not this evil undead they give him their absolute loyalty and love for him.
I viewed this scene very differently i didn't see this as them realising ainz isn't as bad as they say he is but as a hostage finally going through the stages of stockhome syndrome after being tortured for days on end

To be fair, Albedo being suspicious of Hilma is reasonable. I mean, you have to be a unique kind to idiot to do something so monumentally stupid. And Philip managed to defy every possible scenario.
I think some people misunderstand why Ainz spares her. It's got nothing to with justice or innocence. Ainz kills if it's advantageous to him or Nazarik. He killed a bunch of lizardmen to get Cocytus to learn. He massacred most of the mole race to get the dwarves on his side. He also slaughters most of the kingdom as an object lesson to other nations. He has literally ordered the deaths of thousands of innocents. He simply spares Hilma because there's no advantage to him or Nazarik in killing her. She's a useful tool who hasn't betrayed him or done anything wrong, why would he kill her?
Did you take him as a hero, you are explaining this as the first experience, if you ask me he is still a better person than this world most of the characters, most of these world characters are a bunch of hypocrites.

A lot of people misunderstood this scene, Ainz isn't being kind, he's being reasonable. He may be an undead but he isn't a maniac who gets off to killing people. He kills if he ABSOLUTELY needs to.
Yeah, Ainz only cares for his own brood. He cares not who this Cygnus women is before him. But as the true ruler of death, he is impartial and fair to all.
It's good that Ainz is not Fallout or Skyrim type of RP-er who absolutely destroys worlds for no reason at all but just to see destruction of it. Destroying for sake of destruction.
I sometimes think that scenes like this, show how his sealed empathy has effects on his behaviour in less obvious ways. With his empathy sealed he will gladly kill thousands to achieve his goals, but I think it has the bizarre side effect of giving him no specific desire to kill (unless the things he still cares about are harmed/threatened). If it is beneficial to kill someone; he will, but if there is no benefit in doing so; he won't. He operates on a kind of ruthless logic where most citizens of this world mean nothing to him unless they either become an asset or a liability to his plans. Only then do they actually matter to him either way. Killing is a tool to him and in situations like this, he sees no benefit to using it.
i mean, he is a usual salaryman outside of being a gamer. he just approached the situation from an actual management standpoint. if he was in hilma's situation in his previous job before getting stuck in the new world with the guild npcs, he'd want to be treated by management with that same reasonable approach too.
I love how the detailed trial goes in the LN. Hilma's pure fear and terror change to pure reverance and respect to ainz in just a few exchange. The dream of them of just dying has changed to be a direct subordinate of ainz. 😂

When you're competent you can get things done but doesn't necessarily mean that you have the skill and wisdom to pick what needs to be done or the Firm however you say it to keep your employees in line. He's able to pick who to give what jobs to and is confident in them being able to achieve whatever goals he sets before them even if it's not specifically how he would have wanted done. The only people who truly did not follow his orders properly as far as We Know were lupus Regina beta and Shout your blood falling and shot tears case it was because she let herself go into blood frenzy then got mind control.
He was already a great leader. He lead the toughest guild on Yggdrassil. Under his leadership their guild became the best. They weren't ranked #1 because they mostly did role playing but they were the only guild to never be successfully raided and they had more world items than anyone else. If Ainz could accomplish all of that in a highly competitive & hardcore MMORPG full of pros, he can take on anything the New World throws at him. Also he lost his penis so he has no distraction. Imagine having post-nut clarity 24/7, combined with not needing to sleep, pee, poop, or eat. Actually that sounds like it would get old fast those are all of my favorite things to do.
It's also mentioned that Nazzarik was the hardest guild to invade because it was HUGE, the Guardians are all BOSS FIGHTS the only ones that Ainz can beat on a 1v1 are the weakest ones and those are Demiurge and Aura (lowest total stats), he cant beat Albedo on a 1v1 and Victim is said to be the hardest boss fight in Nazzarik as there where only 3 times a guild managed to get past it; Keep in mind that they are way stronger on their own floor domains on Nazzarik and Ainz only managed to beat Shaltear because he did a Batman on her and it was still a close fight. The Plaides are all weak compared to players, Sebas is not of the plaides just their leader (he's strong to the point his stats rival that of Demiuge and is even stronger than Aura who fights along with her brother on their floor).

The main reason they were never successfully raided is because when the raids reached the 8th floor and victim suicide bombed the entire expeditions and they all died. The NPCS are all fodder except for Albedo, Shalltear, Negredo, Gargantua and Sebas which are all on a level of a good player with mid endgame gear, except Gargantua which takes someone like touchMe to defeat. Ainz fully equipped takes them all and since he has so many death buffs he can take on them all together. in the fight with shalltear he came in with basically no gear till he understood that there is no one around to loot him if he dies or to ambush him so he started using cash shop items to end the battle quickly.
I do know about Victim but people did in fact get past Victim, only 3 guilds managed to get past him, Victim's battle is so absurdly "unfair" that players started to report their guild as using sploits on his battle floor because they straight up used too many resourses to get past all of the floors and Victm's battle is straight up a tik bomb with huge debuffs and 2 of the strongest summons of the entire game, in the end the GAdm. ruled the fight was fair and no sploits where used. The plaides are there to buy time so the guild mangers that are offline can login in to help but the whole place is so huge and hard that like you said, they never lost a raid because the only 3 guilds that managed to beat all floors where already too beaten and out of resources for the final fight vs the actual players. Like i said Battle floors are custom made to amp the Guardians stats, they are far stronger not only on their own floors but vaslty stronger on their own battle room, the only fooder are NPCs are the plaides and mobs, except for Sebas. And like i said the battle vs Shalter was close, Shaltear is on his own words a huge counter for him, the whole battle was planned and set up from the very beginning but he was aware that random shit might actually happen, he even said that if the fight takes too long Shaltear's healing skill will vastly outpace his mana regen and potions he could have used and the fight would be over for him, so he had to buy time for that delayed final spell cast, on this very battle he also said that sinse he's not on the game he tried to bluff his way into making her cast holy spells on a holy resistant robe because while his main set is vastly superior, it does not have the resistences of a piece of set especially designed to resist X element, so he would do more dmg on his main set of set, true, but also take far more dmg too, so yes he did a Batman on her and did everthing to win that 1v1 because on normal conditions She would win vs him even when she's outside of her floor.
Believe me, Lady Albedo would enjoy me alive (well, as alive as a serpentine vampiress could be) much more. Besides, I have my own Lord, so I won't try to get Ainz.
That checkmate against Albedo though. You wanna tell everyone here i'm at fault or you wanna accept sometimes subordinates do things without out instructions or informing us. Literally: "Well, she's your subordinate, and your MY subordinate, so i'm to blame right?"
Oh his punishment was delayed so they could use his actions as an excuse to invade the kingdom, but the second he stole from Nazarick he was undead man walking.
Ainz being pragmatic is one of the reason why I like him. He doesn't go all "kill everything for I am the strongest" or your typical isekai mc being " I'm the strongest but wants a normal life" bs. He is reasonable in his actions keeping a level head in the "now" and acting according to the situation.
Not only did Ainz use Albedo's words against her but he showed her not to be so quick to punish everyone for the actions of one at the bottom. He knows it's not right nor fair to punish Hilma which has nothing to do with the attacks and if Albedo kept persistent he would have told her she should also be punished just like him due to her words. The servants are too quick to cut down valuable resources due zealously to Ainz." Yeah Hilma and her gang are crooks but they are well organized in the underworld and Ainz has no one, not even humanoid servants that could handle mingling with other humans to keep ties and trades, Albedo's words of looking down on widows and the people are proof he can't trust them enough to handle the dealings of the court and people since they can't even control their actions of striking down anyone that even casual talk with Ainz or ask/question him. When he wanted the guide master to not hold back his opinions with Ainz it was so he can have a conversation without bias for him. If he makes a mistake he wants someone to tell him before it gets worst. That's why he trusts Pandora's actor more with his personal feelings and thoughts than with Albedo or Demiurge
Fun fact : before Nazarick subjugated the Eight Finger, Hilma was supposed to be the kind-of premium service hostess. It is only then when she is brought to "that" cockroach den she understand the horror of opposing any of Nazarick's NPCs.
I read the translated LN, I believe that Hilma actually said "He's more human than i thought" (could be mistaken, there was another encounter with a prince, and he might have been the one who said that)
Pretty much a majority of the characters that are unafraid of Ainz and have spoken to him all reached the same conclusion. All of them realized that he was a human deep down.
That's the Prince's line. Hilma's line goes along "he's ruthless but he's fair." And "How tasty the 'carrot' is when you know how painful the 'whip' can be". Ainz and his subordinates may be evil but it's not without direction. The monsters are loyal to Ainz because as the "King" of these monsters, he stands as a benevolent ruler. Of course she didn't know Ainz is their creator.
I love how flipped on it's head this scene becomes afterwards. Ainz made a big deal about blaming someones superior for thier mistakes. That it should be to protect those below another, and not to push blame. Then afterwards, immediately push blame on the kingdom for Philips actions to justify desimating their entire kingdom.
Sadly it was necessary for the dominance of nazarick, Ainz indeed tried to find a way out of this outcome but again, for his image, the Guild's growth and ultimately, his lack of human's empathy and mercy. It has to be done
Ainz made it clear that he didn't desired this outcome, but as the baharuth empire already pledged loyalty and begged to become a vassal state, they already got the candy (Ainz protection and independence from anyone but him) re-estize indirectly offended Ainz, and was the perfect excuse to show everyone what would happen if they tried any kind of trick or scheme against nazarick, that's why they got the stick.
@@mgsfan4348 That's the feudal system for you, Kings rule, but they aren't allmighty, if enough strong nobles band together the royal family is easily overthrown. Each of these Lords has their own lands and soldiers loyal to them and not the King. It wasn't until standing national armies were introduced that Kings got more powerful and even "absolutistic" monarchs still needed support.
Context is important. He demanded just the head of Philip first, along with the return of everything stolen. When it was denied, they immediately jumped to war and the plan meant no survivors. He didn't blame the kingdom for it. The kingdom decided Philip, was fine, and tried to protect him with its life. Resulting in it ending.
That is one lil giant fuck up, even mistaking it for sending it to the dwarven city states would have made more sense, but to the Theocracy which is the hostile and main enemy? Wow!

people always blaming ainz for all the deaths... ainz in reality is a very simple individual with very simple needs. he would be happy just running around as momom doing adventures and living that life, but he happens to be inside the body of an ancient lich that also happens to be the maximun authority of a bunch of ultra powerful monsters that happen to see him as the wisest master in all reality. what can he do? he has to play the part, for starters because is better for him if he maintains control of nazarick, and then because is also better for the world if 20+ level 100 monsters and their lvl 70+ subordinates get released into the world without a leash, which is likely what would happen if they ever figured out that ainz is just a random guy. but playing the part comes with a prize, he has to act as if he is the mastermind behind a plan that he doesnt even know, so if the people that think that are following you plan say that the next step of the plan is to destroy a kingdom... then a kingdom needs to be destroyed but leave ainz alone or surround him with the subordinates that are not that smart and he actually solves things quite peacefully. you can see the whole dwarven arc, that is ainz bringing aura and shaltear, which are not going to come up with "steps of an imaginary plan" on their own. instead they let ainz simply act and they follow, and how does ainz act? of course some deaths are also happening here and there, but for the most part ainz is all talk and negociation, and for the most part everyone that is willing to listen to him gets a very good deal out of him. it happen in carne village too. now dont get me wrong, ainz is not saint and he has an agenda and some priorities, but for the most part he is more than happy to simply rule a world were everyone gets to live a good life and the only real condition for that life is to not disrespect nazarick. not the best guy around but better than most rulers in that world if you ask me
TL;DR, Ainz is playing cautious because this is now his only life and he cannot risk the chance of other players like himself being in this world and hostile to him. Thus he plays the part of “Overlord” to get as many resources as he can on his side in order to stand a chance against any high-tier players like himself coming to attack him.
The NPCs want to conquer the world because that is what they believe ainz wants. All they really want is to serve their master and have him stay with them because they truly believe the only reason they exist at all is to serve the supreme being who created them. Demiurge for example fears for Ainz when he fights shalltear and this is the only time he ever considered disobeying direct orders. He says straight out that if Ainz dies, there won't be anyone left to serve and they won't have any reason to exist anymore. Albedo is the only one who hates the supreme beings and the others feel jealousy towards Pandora's actor since his creator is the only one who stayed. If Ainz were firm and more decisive in managing the NPCs, there would be much less misunderstanding. If Ainz dies somehow, then the NPCs would probably seek out revenge.
In "Adventure Time", there was an ice cream (?) character at Princess Bubblegum's castle, that would scream "Lich alert! Lich alert!" to announce the presence of... well, The Lich. Could be fun to have a similar character for Ainz, that would warn everyone around :)
Massive subtitle errors from crunchy roll here. When ever they mention "sending aide to the theocracy" they actually mean to the holy roble kingdom which is covered in the upcoming movies
This and his interactions with the Dwarves shows that Ains, his human self, is still in there. Now, granted, he's not sparing Hilma out of some sense of sympathy, in fact if she *was* responsible she would be on her way to Neuronist or Kyuhoko alredy. But Ains just isn't a sadistic monster. He's pretty reasonable and logical if left to his own devices. Hilma wasn't at fault so he didn't punish her. It was as simple as that. And when Albedo tried to insist on a punishment, Ains threw her own logic back st her and taught the Gurdians a collective lesson on how a leader should use their position to protect their subordinates rather than kick down or shift blame. Something he had significant personal experience with,being a regular salaryman. The same thing happened , again, with the dwarves. Without Demiurge and Albedo there to overhype his intelligence and analyse every little move like a game of chess, he lets himself relax and actually be kind of nice to people.
In the LN Ainz struggle is a lot clearer because we can read his inner thoughts. He is constantly juggling expectations and his own beliefs in order to try and be a kind of good boss, teach the guardians as his own children and also be the king they expect him to be.

@@euqinemor They're exaggerating a bit, but they're not lying. The author of Overlord has plainly stated that he's really tired of writing the series and he wants to move on to other projects. He states Piracy as one of the main reasons for why he's basically quitting--which, if you ask me, is pretty dumb. Piracy made Overlord far more popular than it should have been.
To be honest imagine you were tortured by Mare healed tortured healed tortured until you fully yielded. Now that Mare's supreme being basically defends your innocence and pardons you. I'm almost finished volume 14 of the novel and awaiting the translation for volume 15. I'm the type of person that likes when a story shifts perspective with different side characters (especially their inner monologues) like Neia's friendship with the one battle maid (forgot her name) and Philips stupidity seen as genius in his own perspective. Overlord is a good novel, but the manga adapted a couple of things from the story only for the anime to further adapt in its own way..
Canonically Ainz Orders them to have a strict work day and time off, as well as weekends and benefits. It’s important to remember Ainz was nearly worked to death in his previous life, and felt like his body was about to give out before he was Isekaied.

i think author regret his own story. he write a sidestory about evileye that is a parallel story about ainz coming to new world 200 years earlier. the story is alright but i dislike the author for writing something like that. there is so much more he could have writting about the past of the new world (13heroes, 8greedking, 6greatgods) but he abandoning his own story. there are also things he said years earlier about the kingdoms to the east. but we will never see it in the story i guesss.
It does make some sense though, if you're forced to write one particular type of story it gets old and grinding and depressing- especially as dark as Overlord is and has become. there's no levity to balance the pathos anymore.
The taste of the millions of insects that went down her mouth and ate her from the inside out for days when she was first brought to Ainz for kidnapping the girl Sebas was with. She can still taste the feeling
You remember the room full of cockroaches? Imagine having them forcibly go down your throat, eat your insides, have yourself healed, then repeat. At this point the members of 8 fingers are truly traumatized and fearful of angering Ainz or his subordinates. Also while it's hard to see in the anime, the LN describes them as being gaunt and frail because after their 'conditioning' they are unable to eat solid food before the trauma forces them to be physically sick.

because if she had a different personality and he asked " are you involved with the robbery" and she said "no" it still could have been the other personality.
because if she had other personalities, tge current personality could have nothing to do with the asked questions, while another, could have been involed. you can take it as another person answering her questions entirely at that point. Which is important because let’s say, for a lie detector test, if they ACTUALLY have separate personalities and not just being a quirky edgy teen, they could give true and false statements depending on the personalities , for the same question.
It means having other personalities. Take for example you have another personality that is quite evil, this "other" you might start stabbing people for the fun of it and when you return to your "normal" self you start to criticize the things the "other" you did despite being one person as a whole

Me too. This is one of my favorite scenes. It is done so well. I love the close up view of Hilma's eye showing her pupil quivering as she is overcome with gratitude for Ainz' benevolence. I also love how when she returns, the other nobles immediately recognise & acknowledge the "carrot & stick" scheme that is being used on her. It is fitting and well written.
I did read some of the commenters who saying Ainz is a bad guy who destroyed the whole kingdom because of the great phillip, the future Albedo's torture toy.... You do realize this is not your shonen anime right? Even Ainz himself commented about this to Climb before he killed the crazy witch (which is Renner) pet If you guys want to watch the hero saga so much, where you can see the goodness defeated the badness, you can watch and read Goblin Slayer instead reading those generic shounen novel? Some people tend to ignore the world building of Overlord, as they seem to miss out that the Kingdom was corrupt from top to bottom. The place was overrun with corrupt nobles, criminals, power hungry fools, and backstabbers. Gazef was the best the Kingdom could offer, and even he picked repaying a personal debt over saving the Kingdom. The only one who actually cared about the Kingdom was Zanac and we know how he ended up.

Demiurge, being programmed to find the most sadistic and efficient route to his goal, does this in his spare time. Ainz doesn't really bother with whatever they're doing.
She was already released. It's just that hilma expected the worst kind of torture because of how albedo and the other guardians treat them. But ainz is just so reasonable.
to be fair, it wasn't just 1 guy. It was a baron and 3 other noblemen. Literally officials of the kingdom. Like imagine irl if a few senators of a country decided to orchestrate an act of terrorism on another country just because they got greedy and wanted to manipulate the market. @@JBrander In the novel, Albedo killed everyone who lived in Philips neighborhood by impaling everyone, including children, on stakes. If Ainz wanted to get revenge on Philip and at some of the nobles, all he had to do is get revenge on just them. Blaming and going as far as wiping out an entire kingdom over something as small as a flag and carriages, would give off the precedent to the world that the king of Nazarick is an omisidal maniac that would destroy everything over the most pitiful of things. Someone as powerful as Ainz and the people of Nazarick that can easily destroy a kingdom in one day, its a dead give away that it was all an excuse. Demolishing their good image that they built up with the public. Its probably one of the stupidest conquest plans i've ever seen.

I’m always confused with this scene in the anime because in the novel I think phillip stealing the grain was a plot by albedo/ainz/demiurge(forgot) to give them justification to wipe out the kingdom But in the anime it’s phillip doing it on his own?
Him and a couple of his noble friends. Their kingdoms have alot of agriculture that ainz was undercutting and they thought they could rob from him and boost their own prices at the same time. They were not portrayed as particularly intelligent.
In both the LN and the anime Phillip got it into his head that stealing grain from the Sorcerer Kingdom would not only allow his domain to sell their own crops at a premium by lowering the competition, but that he would also be commended for his "valorous" act against a hostile nation. Obviously he couldn't have known such a minor incident would be the excuse for Ains to destroy the Kingdom, but his reasoning and the fact that he did it are *so stupid* and thoughtless that even the 3 smartest beings on the continent, ( Albedo ,Demiurge and Renner) were all completely stunned at the fact that someone could actually do something that dumb.

I think this is a metaphor just like the carrot and stick. Hilma was tortured, and then a slight kindness from Ainz makes Hilma totally subservient to him.

For example if you remember there was an item that clouded shalltear's mind, I think it was a world class level item. It also affected mind but because it was in the isekai world we saw how it affected her but if the same item came from the game then how would that work? Simply it would render the character named shalltear useless or turn her into enemy which you would have to defeat to regain her as an ally.

Probably after you manage to inflict it to your opponent you can simply say simple command like "attack your comrade" and the player's character who's mind controlled will move on its own but thats just in game, i doubt it could actually be used to affect the literal people. But did you forget that some spell Ainz has worked differently in NW? Ainz already mentioned this and the evidence is his Death Knight summoning spell.
This show makes no sense... He sounds like a good leader sometimes but then a monster other times. He allows his followers to sway his choices. He treats most beings of this world as just pawns he can kill off anytime he choses. The original GM would be ashamed of him.
You make some good points but it doesnt even sound like youve watched the show. Ainz isnt some mastermind, he still has his human values which makes him commit conflicting choices and he tries to satisfy his subordinates. Lets not also forget not every part of overlord is serious, theres some mixed in over the top comedy
Ainz is not the brilliant overlord he pretends to be. He is a genius in combat and getting information, but he lacks in other areas where the NPCs manage things for.him. Also Ainz is the main villain but is not a complete monster, he retains his human soul even if it is slowly eroded by the elder lich body he has now. He is very pragmatic and respects those who earn it such as Gazef and Zanac. But cross him and you'll learn what true suffering really is.

A person suffering from multiple personality disorder may not know whether he or she suffers from such. But a person who might've encountered another might have heard such a comment from anyone she knows. Hilma is a high clas prostitute so clearly she had a lot of social interactions. One way or another, a person could've asked such a question if she is suffering from such disorder.
I like how everyone is expecting him to be this cruel and sadistic king that would have other's tortured or killed on a whim but when they meet him they realize that he is pretty kind and reasonable unlike his subordinates who are very evil cruel and sadistic and when he show's that he can be kind and not this evil undead they give him their absolute loyalty and love for him.
I viewed this scene very differently i didn't see this as them realising ainz isn't as bad as they say he is but as a hostage finally going through the stages of stockhome syndrome after being tortured for days on end

I think some people misunderstand why Ainz spares her. It's got nothing to with justice or innocence. Ainz kills if it's advantageous to him or Nazarik. He killed a bunch of lizardmen to get Cocytus to learn. He massacred most of the mole race to get the dwarves on his side. He also slaughters most of the kingdom as an object lesson to other nations. He has literally ordered the deaths of thousands of innocents. He simply spares Hilma because there's no advantage to him or Nazarik in killing her. She's a useful tool who hasn't betrayed him or done anything wrong, why would he kill her?
Did you take him as a hero, you are explaining this as the first experience, if you ask me he is still a better person than this world most of the characters, most of these world characters are a bunch of hypocrites.

A lot of people misunderstood this scene, Ainz isn't being kind, he's being reasonable. He may be an undead but he isn't a maniac who gets off to killing people. He kills if he ABSOLUTELY needs to.
Yeah, Ainz only cares for his own brood. He cares not who this Cygnus women is before him. But as the true ruler of death, he is impartial and fair to all.

I sometimes think that scenes like this, show how his sealed empathy has effects on his behaviour in less obvious ways. With his empathy sealed he will gladly kill thousands to achieve his goals, but I think it has the bizarre side effect of giving him no specific desire to kill (unless the things he still cares about are harmed/threatened).
If it is beneficial to kill someone; he will, but if there is no benefit in doing so; he won't. He operates on a kind of ruthless logic where most citizens of this world mean nothing to him unless they either become an asset or a liability to his plans. Only then do they actually matter to him either way. Killing is a tool to him and in situations like this, he sees no benefit to using it.

i mean, he is a usual salaryman outside of being a gamer. he just approached the situation from an actual management standpoint. if he was in hilma's situation in his previous job before getting stuck in the new world with the guild npcs, he'd want to be treated by management with that same reasonable approach too.
I love how the detailed trial goes in the LN. Hilma's pure fear and terror change to pure reverance and respect to ainz in just a few exchange. The dream of them of just dying has changed to be a direct subordinate of ainz. 😂

He was already a great leader. He lead the toughest guild on Yggdrassil. Under his leadership their guild became the best. They weren't ranked #1 because they mostly did role playing but they were the only guild to never be successfully raided and they had more world items than anyone else. If Ainz could accomplish all of that in a highly competitive & hardcore MMORPG full of pros, he can take on anything the New World throws at him.
Also he lost his penis so he has no distraction. Imagine having post-nut clarity 24/7, combined with not needing to sleep, pee, poop, or eat. Actually that sounds like it would get old fast those are all of my favorite things to do.

It's also mentioned that Nazzarik was the hardest guild to invade because it was HUGE, the Guardians are all BOSS FIGHTS the only ones that Ainz can beat on a 1v1 are the weakest ones and those are Demiurge and Aura (lowest total stats), he cant beat Albedo on a 1v1 and Victim is said to be the hardest boss fight in Nazzarik as there where only 3 times a guild managed to get past it;
Keep in mind that they are way stronger on their own floor domains on Nazzarik and Ainz only managed to beat Shaltear because he did a Batman on her and it was still a close fight.
The Plaides are all weak compared to players, Sebas is not of the plaides just their leader (he's strong to the point his stats rival that of Demiuge and is even stronger than Aura who fights along with her brother on their floor).

The main reason they were never successfully raided is because when the raids reached the 8th floor and victim suicide bombed the entire expeditions and they all died. The NPCS are all fodder except for Albedo, Shalltear, Negredo, Gargantua and Sebas which are all on a level of a good player with mid endgame gear, except Gargantua which takes someone like touchMe to defeat. Ainz fully equipped takes them all and since he has so many death buffs he can take on them all together. in the fight with shalltear he came in with basically no gear till he understood that there is no one around to loot him if he dies or to ambush him so he started using cash shop items to end the battle quickly.
I do know about Victim but people did in fact get past Victim, only 3 guilds managed to get past him, Victim's battle is so absurdly "unfair" that players started to report their guild as using sploits on his battle floor because they straight up used too many resourses to get past all of the floors and Victm's battle is straight up a tik bomb with huge debuffs and 2 of the strongest summons of the entire game, in the end the GAdm. ruled the fight was fair and no sploits where used.
The plaides are there to buy time so the guild mangers that are offline can login in to help but the whole place is so huge and hard that like you said, they never lost a raid because the only 3 guilds that managed to beat all floors where already too beaten and out of resources for the final fight vs the actual players.
Like i said Battle floors are custom made to amp the Guardians stats, they are far stronger not only on their own floors but vaslty stronger on their own battle room, the only fooder are NPCs are the plaides and mobs, except for Sebas.
And like i said the battle vs Shalter was close, Shaltear is on his own words a huge counter for him, the whole battle was planned and set up from the very beginning but he was aware that random shit might actually happen, he even said that if the fight takes too long Shaltear's healing skill will vastly outpace his mana regen and potions he could have used and the fight would be over for him, so he had to buy time for that delayed final spell cast, on this very battle he also said that sinse he's not on the game he tried to bluff his way into making her cast holy spells on a holy resistant robe because while his main set is vastly superior, it does not have the resistences of a piece of set especially designed to resist X element, so he would do more dmg on his main set of set, true, but also take far more dmg too, so yes he did a Batman on her and did everthing to win that 1v1 because on normal conditions She would win vs him even when she's outside of her floor.
That's the sad thing, Aniz is a very reasonable person. his subordinates who most people will have to deal with are not.

Oh his punishment was delayed so they could use his actions as an excuse to invade the kingdom, but the second he stole from Nazarick he was undead man walking.
Ainz being pragmatic is one of the reason why I like him. He doesn't go all "kill everything for I am the strongest" or your typical isekai mc being " I'm the strongest but wants a normal life" bs. He is reasonable in his actions keeping a level head in the "now" and acting according to the situation.
Seems Hilma is experiencing a wave euphoria after not being exposed to insects again and being dominated by Ains.
Not only did Ainz use Albedo's words against her but he showed her not to be so quick to punish everyone for the actions of one at the bottom. He knows it's not right nor fair to punish Hilma which has nothing to do with the attacks and if Albedo kept persistent he would have told her she should also be punished just like him due to her words.

Yeah Hilma and her gang are crooks but they are well organized in the underworld and Ainz has no one, not even humanoid servants that could handle mingling with other humans to keep ties and trades, Albedo's words of looking down on widows and the people are proof he can't trust them enough to handle the dealings of the court and people since they can't even control their actions of striking down anyone that even casual talk with Ainz or ask/question him.
When he wanted the guide master to not hold back his opinions with Ainz it was so he can have a conversation without bias for him. If he makes a mistake he wants someone to tell him before it gets worst. That's why he trusts Pandora's actor more with his personal feelings and thoughts than with Albedo or Demiurge

Ainz and his subordinates may be evil but it's not without direction. The monsters are loyal to Ainz because as the "King" of these monsters, he stands as a benevolent ruler. Of course she didn't know Ainz is their creator.

I love how flipped on it's head this scene becomes afterwards. Ainz made a big deal about blaming someones superior for thier mistakes. That it should be to protect those below another, and not to push blame. Then afterwards, immediately push blame on the kingdom for Philips actions to justify desimating their entire kingdom.

people always blaming ainz for all the deaths... ainz in reality is a very simple individual with very simple needs. he would be happy just running around as momom doing adventures and living that life, but he happens to be inside the body of an ancient lich that also happens to be the maximun authority of a bunch of ultra powerful monsters that happen to see him as the wisest master in all reality. what can he do? he has to play the part, for starters because is better for him if he maintains control of nazarick, and then because is also better for the world if 20+ level 100 monsters and their lvl 70+ subordinates get released into the world without a leash, which is likely what would happen if they ever figured out that ainz is just a random guy.
but playing the part comes with a prize, he has to act as if he is the mastermind behind a plan that he doesnt even know, so if the people that think that are following you plan say that the next step of the plan is to destroy a kingdom... then a kingdom needs to be destroyed
but leave ainz alone or surround him with the subordinates that are not that smart and he actually solves things quite peacefully. you can see the whole dwarven arc, that is ainz bringing aura and shaltear, which are not going to come up with "steps of an imaginary plan" on their own. instead they let ainz simply act and they follow, and how does ainz act? of course some deaths are also happening here and there, but for the most part ainz is all talk and negociation, and for the most part everyone that is willing to listen to him gets a very good deal out of him. it happen in carne village too.
now dont get me wrong, ainz is not saint and he has an agenda and some priorities, but for the most part he is more than happy to simply rule a world were everyone gets to live a good life and the only real condition for that life is to not disrespect nazarick. not the best guy around but better than most rulers in that world if you ask me
TL;DR, Ainz is playing cautious because this is now his only life and he cannot risk the chance of other players like himself being in this world and hostile to him. Thus he plays the part of “Overlord” to get as many resources as he can on his side in order to stand a chance against any high-tier players like himself coming to attack him.

The NPCs want to conquer the world because that is what they believe ainz wants. All they really want is to serve their master and have him stay with them because they truly believe the only reason they exist at all is to serve the supreme being who created them. Demiurge for example fears for Ainz when he fights shalltear and this is the only time he ever considered disobeying direct orders. He says straight out that if Ainz dies, there won't be anyone left to serve and they won't have any reason to exist anymore.
Albedo is the only one who hates the supreme beings and the others feel jealousy towards Pandora's actor since his creator is the only one who stayed.
If Ainz were firm and more decisive in managing the NPCs, there would be much less misunderstanding. If Ainz dies somehow, then the NPCs would probably seek out revenge.

There is always the possibility of her receiving a enchanted item that could protect her or allow another personality to take over.

This and his interactions with the Dwarves shows that Ains, his human self, is still in there.

But Ains just isn't a sadistic monster. He's pretty reasonable and logical if left to his own devices.
Hilma wasn't at fault so he didn't punish her. It was as simple as that.
And when Albedo tried to insist on a punishment, Ains threw her own logic back st her and taught the Gurdians a collective lesson on how a leader should use their position to protect their subordinates rather than kick down or shift blame.

The same thing happened , again, with the dwarves. Without Demiurge and Albedo there to overhype his intelligence and analyse every little move like a game of chess, he lets himself relax and actually be kind of nice to people.
In the LN Ainz struggle is a lot clearer because we can read his inner thoughts. He is constantly juggling expectations and his own beliefs in order to try and be a kind of good boss, teach the guardians as his own children and also be the king they expect him to be.
I'd like to think Albedo's real punishment was Ainz taking the blame for her fk up.

I'm almost finished volume 14 of the novel and awaiting the translation for volume 15. I'm the type of person that likes when a story shifts perspective with different side characters (especially their inner monologues) like Neia's friendship with the one battle maid (forgot her name) and Philips stupidity seen as genius in his own perspective. Overlord is a good novel, but the manga adapted a couple of things from the story only for the anime to further adapt in its own way..

i think author regret his own story.
he write a sidestory about evileye that is a parallel story about ainz coming to new world 200 years earlier. the story is alright but i dislike the author for writing something like that. there is so much more he could have writting about the past of the new world (13heroes, 8greedking, 6greatgods) but he abandoning his own story.
there are also things he said years earlier about the kingdoms to the east. but we will never see it in the story i guesss.
It does make some sense though, if you're forced to write one particular type of story it gets old and grinding and depressing- especially as dark as Overlord is and has become. there's no levity to balance the pathos anymore.

You remember the room full of cockroaches? Imagine having them forcibly go down your throat, eat your insides, have yourself healed, then repeat. At this point the members of 8 fingers are truly traumatized and fearful of angering Ainz or his subordinates. Also while it's hard to see in the anime, the LN describes them as being gaunt and frail because after their 'conditioning' they are unable to eat solid food before the trauma forces them to be physically sick.
Its actually kinda nice that they will be granted land and a town to manage later considering they offended nazarick and they did worse for less

Which is important because let’s say, for a lie detector test, if they ACTUALLY have separate personalities and not just being a quirky edgy teen, they could give true and false statements depending on the personalities , for the same question.
It means having other personalities. Take for example you have another personality that is quite evil, this "other" you might start stabbing people for the fun of it and when you return to your "normal" self you start to criticize the things the "other" you did despite being one person as a whole

Me too. This is one of my favorite scenes. It is done so well. I love the close up view of Hilma's eye showing her pupil quivering as she is overcome with gratitude for Ainz' benevolence. I also love how when she returns, the other nobles immediately recognise & acknowledge the "carrot & stick" scheme that is being used on her. It is fitting and well written.

Some people tend to ignore the world building of Overlord, as they seem to miss out that the Kingdom was corrupt from top to bottom. The place was overrun with corrupt nobles, criminals, power hungry fools, and backstabbers. Gazef was the best the Kingdom could offer, and even he picked repaying a personal debt over saving the Kingdom. The only one who actually cared about the Kingdom was Zanac and we know how he ended up.

Demiurge, being programmed to find the most sadistic and efficient route to his goal, does this in his spare time. Ainz doesn't really bother with whatever they're doing.

to be fair, it wasn't just 1 guy. It was a baron and 3 other noblemen. Literally officials of the kingdom. Like imagine irl if a few senators of a country decided to orchestrate an act of terrorism on another country just because they got greedy and wanted to manipulate the market. @@JBrander In the novel, Albedo killed everyone who lived in Philips neighborhood by impaling everyone, including children, on stakes. If Ainz wanted to get revenge on Philip and at some of the nobles, all he had to do is get revenge on just them. Blaming and going as far as wiping out an entire kingdom over something as small as a flag and carriages, would give off the precedent to the world that the king of Nazarick is an omisidal maniac that would destroy everything over the most pitiful of things. Someone as powerful as Ainz and the people of Nazarick that can easily destroy a kingdom in one day, its a dead give away that it was all an excuse. Demolishing their good image that they built up with the public. Its probably one of the stupidest conquest plans i've ever seen.

I’m always confused with this scene in the anime because in the novel I think phillip stealing the grain was a plot by albedo/ainz/demiurge(forgot) to give them justification to wipe out the kingdom
But in the anime it’s phillip doing it on his own?
Him and a couple of his noble friends. Their kingdoms have alot of agriculture that ainz was undercutting and they thought they could rob from him and boost their own prices at the same time.
They were not portrayed as particularly intelligent.

In both the LN and the anime Phillip got it into his head that stealing grain from the Sorcerer Kingdom would not only allow his domain to sell their own crops at a premium by lowering the competition, but that he would also be commended for his "valorous" act against a hostile nation.
Obviously he couldn't have known such a minor incident would be the excuse for Ains to destroy the Kingdom, but his reasoning and the fact that he did it are *so stupid* and thoughtless that even the 3 smartest beings on the continent, ( Albedo ,Demiurge and Renner) were all completely stunned at the fact that someone could actually do something that dumb.

For example if you remember there was an item that clouded shalltear's mind, I think it was a world class level item. It also affected mind but because it was in the isekai world we saw how it affected her but if the same item came from the game then how would that work? Simply it would render the character named shalltear useless or turn her into enemy which you would have to defeat to regain her as an ally.

Probably after you manage to inflict it to your opponent you can simply say simple command like "attack your comrade" and the player's character who's mind controlled will move on its own but thats just in game, i doubt it could actually be used to affect the literal people.
But did you forget that some spell Ainz has worked differently in NW? Ainz already mentioned this and the evidence is his Death Knight summoning spell.

This show makes no sense... He sounds like a good leader sometimes but then a monster other times. He allows his followers to sway his choices. He treats most beings of this world as just pawns he can kill off anytime he choses. The original GM would be ashamed of him.
You make some good points but it doesnt even sound like youve watched the show. Ainz isnt some mastermind, he still has his human values which makes him commit conflicting choices and he tries to satisfy his subordinates. Lets not also forget not every part of overlord is serious, theres some mixed in over the top comedy

Ainz/Momonga in real life is just salaryman with Grade School knowledge. He is stupid but a veteran in mmorpg
Ainz is not the brilliant overlord he pretends to be. He is a genius in combat and getting information, but he lacks in other areas where the NPCs manage things for.him.
Also Ainz is the main villain but is not a complete monster, he retains his human soul even if it is slowly eroded by the elder lich body he has now. He is very pragmatic and respects those who earn it such as Gazef and Zanac. But cross him and you'll learn what true suffering really is.

When they don’t, he gives them vague warnings that someday they will want to be on his side, a lot try to kill him after declining his offer or at least ask him to demonstrate his power
The only times he has been extremely hostile is only in response to threats

One way or another, a person could've asked such a question if she is suffering from such disorder.
