Is that the man mentioned below who featured in a BBC documentary series called Great Railway Journeys? I have good memories of the class 312 trains especially in the early 1990s when I went on a school trip to Chalkwell in Essex from Barking. I have visited Fenchurch Street station in the past and it is a decent station located actually in the City of London.
These units were pretty fast even by modern standards. One was diagrammed to depart Kings Cross on the down fast around 3 minutes behind the Tees Tyne Pullman which was a HST. Quite often it would catch the HST up on a double yellow until the line speed hit 105 and the HST would leave it.
