In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music by Little Feat for the first time on the channel. They are an American Rock band from Los Angeles, and Dixie Chicken is perhaps their most famous song. Join me as I listen to and watch one of their live performances of this song from 1977. I hope you enjoy!

The Waiting for Columbus is a must listen, a true capture of them live.
Doug would love the funky piano!
This
oh of course!
It’s in my top five live albums.
@@dpall38 Seconded.
That is a condensed version. Listen to the one on waiting for Columbus performed with the horn section from the tower of power
You need to hear the live album Waiting for Columbus
Such an abbreviated version, presumably for the constraints of TV. The "Waiting For Columbus" version is outstanding, clocking in at almost 9 minutes (3x this version)
While it is great to see Emmy Lou Harris and Bonnie Raitt, the sad truth is you can't hear them on this performance because I think they never turned on their microphone, or some other excuse. Had the good luck to see Little Feat, for the first time, with Lowell George at the University of New Hampshire in 1978, on the tour promoting their "Waiting For Columbus" live album. The version of "Dixie Chicken" on that album is much longer that the Midnight Special version, and segues into "Rocket In My Pocket".
That version was cut to shreds for TV purposes. Need to checking out the “Waiting For Columbus” live version, or minimally the studio version.
I think their song Willin' is an all-time classic, but here, a performance with Bonnie and Emmylou, good gawd
Our first date together my future wife and I went to see Little Feat at Music Inn in Lenox Mass in 1974. Rode my motorcycle. It was a grass and natural sort of amphitheater and you just tossed a blanket down and there it was. I spent most of the 70's going to things like this. Yeah, I'm a pretty lucky guy.
I had the pleasure of seeing Little Feat open 2 shows for the Grateful Dead in 1990. I cannot imagine a better pairing. What great shows!
My dad, who passed away a year ago today, absolutely loved Little Feat and saw them live tons of times over the years. This takes me back to my childhood in the 80's and 90's. Thanks for this Doug, it's perfect timing.
Doug I'm thrilled that you delved into this.
It's my most favorite of all live album recordings.
Waiting for cumbus has the finest live version.
Oh Doug, Doug, Doug! Any Little Feat song you want to hear, you've got to check Waiting For Columbus first! That's Feat at their apex! Especially Dixie Chicken! Once you hear it, you'll wonder what the hell took you so long! Trust me! Greg in TN
Here lately I've been really getting into their song old folks boogie! Describes me perfectly 🙂
Two Trains and Fat Man In The Bathtub are must listens. Oh yeah, and Easy To Slip and another comment reminded me of Willin’
Gr8 tunes indeed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought Time Loves a Hero as a teenager in the '70s and have been a fan ever since.
RIP Richie. 😢👍
I live in the Mexican town that was the inspiration for that album cover by Neon Park XIII.
I was friends with Neon in the 80s, and his Tales of San Miguel de Allende are part of the reason I moved here over a dozen years ago.
Neon was a good friend of Lowell and the band. He did all but one of their album covers until his death. The “tape painting” technique he developed was also inspired by his frequent stays in Mexico, where he was exposed to Huichol art.
I know nobody asked for this ramble. But if you enjoy the artwork on the albums, it’s worth it to check out his other work.
Lowell learned to play slide after injuring his hand putzing around with a model airplane. He said he used a spark plug socket for his slide because, "if I ever lost it, I could find one in any Sears". lol
RIP Lowell and Sears.
The great thing about the Midnight Special broadcasts is that they were never lip-synched so the performers could really let loose and improvise. I subscribe to their channel. This performance was really fun.
As others have mentioned, Waiting for Columbus is the pinnacle of George-era Little Feat--but I haven't seen anyone mention the song Spanish Moon. It's the standout, for me.
Glad to hear you caught the kinship with the Grateful Dead.
Doug, thank you for showcasing Little Feat. I have followed them for several decades and went to see them a handful of times. Wonderful grooves, melodies, and short stories. Glad to see you enjoy them!
Love Little Feat, cliche to say Waiting for Columbus is tops, but…
Side 2 song run of Time Loves a Hero / Day or Night / Mercenary Territory / Spanish Moon is just perfection to my ears.
Lowell George was the producer for the Grateful Dead album Shakedown Street.
About time people started to dip their toes into the Little Feat pool.
Lowell and the Boys were best enjoyed Live.
At the very least, try Waiting For Colombus.
Play the live album: Waiting for Columbus!
Great memories associated with this song and album. Good choice 😊❤
For your information and your podcast family the live album of Little Feat. One of the best produced audio file live concert LPs on the market today. I can’t really think of another one as good as this little feet album 33 1/3 live unbelievably sounding LP.
Such an underrated song. So good!!!
I have followed you a while now. This has been one of my favorite bands for a long time. A different departure than the Yes and Zappa stuff you have reviewed for us, yeah? Related actually. Keep listening.
My favorite song by them, by far, is Fat Man in the Bathtub, which I'm pretty sure is an autobiographical song by George, given its eerie preview of how he died. Nobody could sing like him.
The version of this song from "Waiting for Columbus" is really the definitive version of this tune. This version was missing an entire verse (We made all the hot spots - my money flowed like wine...) and a lot of fixed instrumental parts of the song; they obviously made a huge cut edit right after Sam Clayton's little percussion solo. It's interesting to see the musicians, but unfortunately this performance was really butchered for television, a lot was cut out. Typically Bill Payne does some really outstanding rag-time piano playing in the segments they edited out.
I saw Little Feat in Toronto in 1990 or 91. They opened for the Allman Brothers. They did a few songs together. Jeff Healey was in the front row and they brought him up on stage for a song or 2. What a night! I don't remember much else other than the feeling.😅
Feats dont fail me now isa great album which l still have the original vinyl. A great band of the 70s.
One of my all time favourite bands.
Doug how a bit of "Dixie Dregs" Freefall
Agreed.
Love the Dregs. So many styles, rock, fusion, bluegrass, and more. For bluegrass, The Bash or Gina Lola Breakdown, rock/fusion - Punk Sandwich or Ice Cakes.
Time loves a hero and Spanish moon are their best songs. Fat man in the bathtub is also very good.
The Let It Roll album From the early '80s is a new er incarnation of the band with a beefed-up sound I think you'll really love. Peace!
Willin’ live version!
Little Feat is an under appreciated band. Nuff said.
Lowell George was with Frank Zappa and The Mothers. One day Lowell brought Frank the song "Willin' " to see if Frank wanted to record it. Frank said, "Why don't you go form your own band". So Lowell did, and Little Feat was the result. Thanks Frank, you "helped" create one of the best bands to ever go on a stage. BTW, "Willin' " is a great song.
One of the best bands to ever do it. Grossly underrated.
saw them once = LIVE
Great reaction, Doug. I’m not sure of the gender of the main character who’s telling the story, but whoever it is, it’s the exact opposite of what you explained: the storyteller says “if *you’ll* be my Dixie Chicken, *I’ll* be your Tennessee Lamb”. But you cleared it up by the end. 3:21
And while I salute you’re wanting to react to a live version, choosing a TV show version that had commercials is always going to be shorter than an *actual* live version. Of which there are many both on audio and video. Almost all of their live performances, outside of official releases are in the public domain, by permission of the members. And they are a jamming band, and their concert versions really open up the songs.
This is 1 of my favorite performances. Extra credit for Bonnie Raitt snd Emy Lou.
Little Feat and Blues Traveler are my favs after the Grateful Dead.
This version from The Midnight Special is one of my favorites.
This one is a truncated version of this song, with the 2nd verse omitted. There are concert versions that are complete with extended jams.
Congratulations on the new headphones, I have them myself, but if you want to get the most out of the deep bass, then you have to buy a pair of: AKG K371 and they are not expensive, but sound is so good on all types of music :)
I agree, it was very short for a live jam, but it was TV.
In my mind, Waiting On Columbus one of the absolute best live albums of all time! Review Spanish Moon from that album…..it’s a classic!
I think you got it backwards. If he will be the Dixie Chicken, she'll be the Tennesee Lamb. Chicken is a reference to money (sugar daddy) and she will be his girl and all that comes from it (including sex). He falls for her, buys her a house, then she runs off with another sugar daddy. All the guys at the bar fell for the same scam at the end.
Should have played the waiting for Columbus version
I love this tune. One of my other favorites is 'Drivin' Blind'.
I adore Jimmy Lou and CSNY!
Lowell George was such a talent. Gone way too soon.
I think if you want to have a crazy amazing experience then you need to listen to either Sound of Silver (2007) or This Is Happening (2010) by LCD Soundsystem. The latter being considered by a good amount of people to be one of the best albums of the 2010s
Try "Easy To Slip"
RIP Lowell, Ritchie, and Paul. Thank You!
Pretty sure I read somewhere that this was Jimmy Page's favorite American band back in the day. Superb musicianship, like Zeppelin, so that makes sense!
The Dixie Chicks, got a ban in almost every USA radio Studio.
Thanks for Little Feat. Saw them live in Tulsa. Some songs they played three times. It was great. Sorry Lowell ate and drugged himself to death. Actually prefer Fat Man in the Bathtub.
Bonnie Rait and Emmylou Harris singing backup .
"There are two kinds of men. Those who are in love with Emmylou Harris and those who have never met her" - W. Nelson.
Many years ago, I heard Lowell George talking about recording “Dixie Chicken”. Lowell said that on the original session he had John Sebastian (Lovin’ Spoonful) and Phil Everly on backing vocals. Lowell went on to say that unfortunately the recording engineer at the studio “pushed the wrong buttons and deleted John and Phil”. Lowell ranted and raved for hours, but couldn’t get back these prized vocal contributions.
Bill Payne is a classically trained pianist.
Can never go wrong with footage from The Midnight Special, even if you do not review it here look for The Midnight Special footage of Kiss doing Black Diamond for your own entertainment really shows what the young band was all about
It was over because it was TV. In real life it went on...
Time loves a hero is a listen to album. Hi roller is a cool tune.
The Name Little Feat was not only a reference to The Beatles name, but also a reference to Lowell's short feet. LOL BTW, "Waiting for Columbus" is a reference to the band waiting to be discovered. Unfortunately, Little Feat never could reach their deserved potential in popularity.
Sadly this version cuts out half the verses.
Edited out the 2nd verse for TV, probably in the interest of TV requirements.
Unfortunately, the Midnight Special would sometimes have people cut their songs to shorter versions.
Put these masters in the HOF,now. Serious omission.
Bill Payne still in the band!
And Kenny Gradney (bass) and Sam Clayton (percussion).
Time to break out some Billy MF Strings...Billy is selling out 17,000 seat arenas for multiple nights.
Poco - Rose Of Cimarron
This is an abbreviated version for TV.
there actually is another verse.
I always thought that this tune is all New Orleans.
I believe The Chicks aka Dixie Chicks got their name from this song.
You've not listened to The Dixie Dregs yet, Doug. Please change that by listening to Cruise Missile by them!!!
I saw how you enjoyed METALLICA: And Justice For All.
You should listen to METALLICA One from the same album & enjoy
Would you like to do a reaction to some long length black metal songs? For example Panopticon - Winter’s Ghost or An Abstract Illusion - In the heavens above, you will become a monster (the latter song is a set of many genres so not only black metal in that song). :)
Rock'n'Roll Doctor would've been good
Actually, you should just listen to Waiting for Columbus from front to back... The best concert recording album of the 70's...
Amen to that!
Hey, thanks for your videos. I would like to do a recomendation to react: Tokyo Ghetto by Eve, I hope you like the harmony between the lyrics and the instrumental.
Their most famous song is not Dixie Chicken it was “ Willin “.
The Midnight Special often forced the musical guests tho shorten the songs.
It's a pity Bonnie Raitt didn't get a chance to play slide guitar.
weird, fun fact...Little Feat is the loudest concert I have ever attended
The initial piano riff has something weird going on , like a MAJ7, I was hoping you would comment on it because it is so dissonant, but you missed it because you were noodling.
Waiting for Columbus best version of dixie chicken.
Hello
Oh, man. 😖
Does this performance leave out the song's second stanza, or did you have to cut it?
That one sets up the third stanza perfectly and explains why everything happened as it did.
The absence of it kinda guts the tune of some of its humor.
Anybody who hasn't heard it should really listen to the full version.
And no, *she's* the "Dixie chicken" and *he's* her "Tennessee Lamb."
Listen to it : "and SHE sang that song so well"
I'm SO surprised you've never reacted to anything from Klaatu (once considered to potentially be the Beatles - you can find info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaatu_(band)). Their song "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" was actually covered by the Carpenters (!!!) - their original is worth a listen (here: ruclips.net/video/jJ4IUjjVfng/видео.html). You're welcome!
This was on Saturday Night Special, so it couldn't last more than 6 minutes or so to fit commercials in. This is not the best version. For the best of Little Feat, you gotta go with the "Goodbye Colombus" album. The band still plays without Lowell, and they are still a hot show.
"Waiting for Coumbus"
He looks like Jack Black?
Zappa kicked him out of his band because he said he was too talented not to have his own.
Zappa kicked him out of the band for drug use.
I disagree. I think the song should have gone on for another 10 minutes, a la Grateful Dead. LOL
you picked the wrong video......they left out a whole verse
I move to take down this version of Dixie Chicken from the internet completely. It is a terrible representation of Feat, LG, hell, even Bonnie, Emmy Lou and the other bass guy. It's cool to see them, but the version is cut off for TV and you can't hear the ladies. I cringe so hard when someone first listens to this version as their intro to LF. 😢
