Hey Dan, as a long term subscriber both on this account and a previous account I have watched your channel grow over the years. One of the reasons I personally believe that your channel may be in decline is because the videos are not as regular as you used to be. I know you have another channel going but you did say yourself on this channel when you launched the second channel that this one would not suffer as a result and the videos would still be as regular on this channel and your new one would not affect this channel in any way. As you have a family and a life to live, it was inevitable that having a second channel, especially one that requires overnight stays, etc, your main channel was going to take a hit. You only have so much free time that you can spend creating content. I am not saying that it's right or wrong I just this that is a major factor in the reason for the channel declining. We used to be guaranteed a video every weekend and myself personally would look forward to the weekly video and fit it into my own schedule to watch. It became a regular thing in our house to watch your weekly video each week as we knew when it would be uploaded and we all looked forward to it being released. Now it could be a few weeks before the next one and as that happens you start to get out of the habbit of looking for new videos because once you look a couple of times and there hasn't been anything new uploaded you find yourself not looking anymore without meaning to. We still thoroughly enjoy all your videos and will continue to watch them as soon as they are released. I'm just trying to help you understand the possible reasons for the views dropping. Keep up the good work though Dan, you still have not put up a single video we didn't like or enjoy. Always great videos and one of if not the best channel on RUclips. We all always enjoy them in our house, and I know you have helped so many to "get out and be that person" as you so often say yourself. You should be proud of what you have achieved because it's you that makes the channel. People watch because they like you, they like your honesty and your down to earth nature. Many people have outdoor channels, but if you don't like the person, you won't stick around or follow the channel. Look forward to your next video. Take care bud.

Spot on my friend. The problem is he was a weekly consistent and created predictable content, and him camping. It became a weekly routine for me. Once he broke that routine I haven't watched as much it's also because the content isn't predictable anymore. I am not interested at all in his other content, especially the giveaway nonsense. I don't mind his old stove review or his cooking vids, but other than that it's a no watch for me. Another channel I watch as a routine is outdoor gear review with Luke. His channel works for the reasons this channel used to work. It's predictable and weekly.
I get that he prolly has the urge to change it up not be boring but he doesn't understand that you can't just change what you sell and expect your customers to keep coming back. If the bakery decided to sell bricks instead of bread imma find a new bakery not buy bricks instead.

Not sure about paying money if they're expecting you to manage the woodland as well. I'd be proper mad if I was paying to be there and still had to deal with dumped tents etc. End of the day it's your choice to make, and I understand the attraction of having a regular spot to use, but I'd be wary of agreeing to too much upkeep work I mean you don't pay to go to work do you!

Well Dan, This is a new concept of wild camping renting a plot of woodland to camp in, how do you plan to stop the youth of today coming and damaging the area, there seems to be a lot of thickos these days who enjoy damaging things either by fire or killing wildlife or other destruction, I think you should get away from urban places and venture into the wild peaceful places, we have loads of places away from the morons! I bet there is some fantastic places 30 mins from where you live! Cheers Mark!

  • @johnclark1469

I think its a brilliant idea. The owner has a responsible respectful camper who is accountable to take proper care of the area and you have more exclusive rights to camp there by an agreement only you have w him. A win-win! This gives you more privacy, safety and authority when camping there. More views, more convenience. And the owner more security on his woodland property. Well done👍

I've lost a bit of enthusiasm for some camping videos lately. I like bad weather, and hot tent camping.. but a lot of the Ghost/Aliens/Bigfoot/MRE stuff I personally find off putting. With so many RUclips channels to watch and not enough time to watch them all I have become more selective with what I can watch.
I think renting a bit of woodland is a good idea, and maybe even offer to help clear up what others have littered?

Sounds an excellent idea Dan. Why don’t you offer to plant trees, of species the owner wants. Running courses would be a load of hassle, as you would have to do risk assessments, CRB checks if youth are involved. Bring wood in to burn. This sounds like a win win for both of you, and you should gain the trust & respect of the owner/farmer. I can’t see the owner allowing a long term lease without a trial period of possibly a year? As it may depend on your interaction with the local youth who abuse the woods. For your channel to grow, stop doing BS haunted vids, they destroy ur credibility 😊

Speaking as a woodland owner, this seems like a good solution. Public liability insurance in particular is getting insanely expensive (if you can get it), so I can understand other owners being concerned about people going in there informally, especially if engaging in camping, fires, etc. Things are rarely free. It's just not always obvious who is doing the paying.

Renting the woodland sounds great, hopefully works out. The problem atm is you were a consistent weekly uploader and created predictable content, that content being you overnight camping. Because you used to be predicatable and consistent watching became a weekly routine for me like tuning in weekly to a tv show at its scheduled time. Once YOU broke that routine by missing weeks and also uploading non-camping content on weeks you did upload I haven't watched as much. I also dont watch as often because the content isn't predictable anymore. I am not interested at all in your other content, especially the giveaways and doing quick reviews on tents and stuff. I don't mind the stove reviews when you cook in them, but other than that this other content you're making is a no watch for me and apparently a significant amount of other people. Another channel I watch as a routine is outdoor gear review with Luke. His channel works for the reasons your channel used to work and this i still watch him weekly. He uploads camping content and review content but he does both predictably and consistently. He doesn't decides one week to make a review of a sleeping pad INSTEAD of unloading a camping trip video he instead uploads the reviews as "bonus" content. Anyways, my point is It's predictable and weekly.
I get that you prolly have the urge to change it up in order not be boring but you dont seem to understand that you can't just change what you sell and expect your customers to keep coming back. I own a small woodland which I film in and whilst it’s a bit more “controlled “ environment it still shows the methods and techniques used in either a survival situation or just showing kit, but without the hassle of using other properties owned by other people! I still like to do little videos when I’m out and about and try to stick to day projects without overnighting that way less likely to upset anyone. I highly recommend buying some land of your own if you can, it’s also so rewarding when not filming having somewhere to chill out in for yourself! It’s also a great investment for your financial future as prices will only go up as less land becomes available. If you have the financial means id honestly recommend it whole heartedly! You will not be disappointed. As for the channel content…. Just do what you enjoy! If you like it then others will too. Don’t try to hard to please others do it for yourself. That’s just my personal opinion mate. Take care and best wishes 👍🏻👍🏻😎

If we leave the dead fall wood and bring our own firewood, then we are helping nature to thrive by leaving everything as it is. I wish I had somewhere close by with permission, if that involves cleaning and caring for the land, then I'm all for it and id pay for the privilege. Go for it mate 👍

Theres a court case here where an older camping couple were murdered over what appears to be a dispute over a drone. Horrible. I enjoy your chanel so keep it up! If you have to give some financial incentive to the landowner to secure a safe comfortable area then I think that's fair enough. These days close to urban areas any woodlands going to be discovered by Fly campers, quite how your going to stop that even when your paying for use of the woods will be a challenge. I followed your channel from its early days, and certainly you hit on the right recipe hence its popularity . I think you went through a period were you "diluted" your content with your other channels, ie in the past you had a mix of kit reviews cooking new camp locations. Things have changed dramatically since you started ie Theirs everyone and their Dog now doing You Tube Wild Camping videos. Appreciate it is difficult to keep things fresh but I am a fan of your good old days . Remember its meant to be fun.

Bad idea Dan, so you will be paying for the use of the woodland while others use it just because it's there as they probably have done because they live close by, you won't be able to stop them, camping near any urban area will always bring problems like local idiots making things unsafe & here you are inviting campers along who you might unwittingly put into danger just by camping in such a place.
What you like about that woodland is just how convenient it is by being on your doorstep, these weekend so called woodsman video's aren't amounting to much, other channels are providing watchers with regular content that's had effort put into it and it shows. I'm sorry but in my opinion this channel is struggling in comparison with others, yes 80+ thousand subscribers is impressive you need to think how many years has it taken to get that many? Then compare that to some other channels and see how long it has taken them to reach their subscriber numbers, personally I think you should upload content that shows you doing what you talk about doing (being that person) if that means you only get a camping video out every 2 weeks then that's ok, quality not quantity Dan.

Hello Dan,do you not have access to local parks? That’s where I’m doing most of my camping! It can attract negative attention at times, like people will look at you and probably talk behind your back,I’ve even had people attack me and sometimes set their dogs on me! Apart from that it’s not too bad. Hope you sort your camping situation out soon mate.

Personally I’d prefer less emphasis on reviewing equipment - (i would think the number of viewers who should actually go out and buy equipment would be quite low) and more focus just on the actual experience and your interactions with nature and others who might be with you. When you are out with others - Vegan Dan etc its the personal interactions i find of most interest - and seeing how you observe the various seasons - the ‘personal’ touch you provide - all the best

I used to watch all of your vids but the new clickbait sensationalism put me off tbh and I stopped even checking them out for a few seconds. I liked your old videos though. I think you're trying too hard to expand at the moment. I remain subscribed hoping for something not steered and influenced by algorithms. Best of luck with future videos.

theres an unwritten rule about wild camping in scotland. if you can, tidy up any rubbish you find. we tend to have an army of people willing to do big clean ups, beaches, woods, parks etc. teenagers gonna teenage, a lot of it iss just lack of knowledge, some of it is laziness, and a little of it is heartlessness, so just tidy what you can as you go. carry it out if you have the legs. but above all, dont get angry about it, its like getting angry at a puppy for peeing the carpet. we were all carpet peeing puppies once.

it's a great idea Dan The farmer gets an income from a piece of unproductive land and you get to be there lawfully. Both winners You will have to look after the place but may receive a small income for your efforts. I hope it goes well for you. Who knows, you eventually may purchase it. Good Luck, I hope it goes well for you.

I think it's a brilliant idea. I do believe that public land should be open to camp on, but this is private land, so it's respectful to the owner.
Can I come and have a campfire chat/dinner with you though?

Go for it, Dan. Would love to see you doing a video camping up here in Scotland. By and large, as long as you're not abusing the land, you dont need permission. Watch the midgies though. 😮

You cant control who goes in and leaves trash.
There should be no money involved. You look after the woodland and its upkeep and in turn they let you camp there. If not find somewhere els. Apply to other land owners for permission. Perhaps 1 or 2 out of 15 or so will give permission.

I agree with your situation and think renting appears to be a solution. The real problem is numpties abusing the woodland and I feel for the land owner.
He should really be paying you for policing his land, especially if you are cleaning up after nuggets that don't appreciate the countryside.
I'd hate this to start a trend whereby people rent land then ban other caring folk from spending a night leaving no trace. Honestly, I'm split on this one. Just as well you've already made your decision.

Your right . Not every one goes up mountains or have the time to drive to the lakes , Peak District etc. For me it would be a 6hr drive so camping in local woods is my best option and camping up in the lakes etc is a weekend break which I have to take off work and that isn’t always that simple.
    Keep up the good work

Hi Dan, fairly new sub still getting through your vids which are great being down to earth which is what camping is all about. Regarding this idea of renting the woodland, if you're going to be accepting responsibility by renting then why don't you offer to maintain the woods for the land owner by keeping it clear of rubbish etc free of charge earning you the 'right' to camp on location whilst you do so? Both parties happy.

Dan it's a shame it's come to this but If it solves your issue with the wood all the better. How are you going police the wood, would be be an issue that comes to mind?
Also on the subject of the drop in subscription. I've just been informed that some subscription have stopped on some utube sites. I've noticed that some of my notifications have stopped notably to your site. It might be an idear to let your subscribers no this.
Cheers Dan looking forward to the new start😊

I don’t think this is a bad idea but here’s another perspective that could help. I first found your channel because you have posted a lot of gear reviews in the past. You reviewed the camping hammock I use, a twig stove and some other things that I use that I take on outdoor adventures. You haven’t posted very many gear reviews as of late. Maybe if you pick up some gear you can do reviews somewhere you don’t need to pay for and you can get a higher number of videos in your backlog for a more consistent schedule.

Sounds like a great opportunity, anyone who is reasonable will understand the land owners position when the idiots trash their land. So this way you keep it in good standing, get your own space to manage and they get the woodland managed. Only question is who will secure the land if you rent it? Will they then leave “tress-passers” to do as they please on the basis you are liable? in terms of opportunities for people to come along and join you on a camp? Where do we sign up 👍🏻👍🏻

Hi Dan, channels like yours pal, i have watched in the past. they have bought the land, so they can do more stuff, like shelters, and build a little cabin etc, and have a few bush craft camps there. If you can get a decent deal on renting it, your laughing. Also the land owners will happy that its been looked after, and been used for something.

Post the land as private, keep it clean and maybe improve it and it’s a win for both you and the landowner. And, of course, us as well.
