The clavicle is a long curved bone that makes up part of the shoulder girdle. The sternal end is rounded. The acromial end is flat. The conoid tubercle is located at the posterior inferior side of the clavicle.
The clavicle is the most common broken bone in the body. The middle third of the clavicle is a common site of fracture because this is the thinnest part of the bone.
Fractures are often caused by
•Falling onto an outstretched shoulder or arm.
•Direct blow to the clavicle.
•Usually associated with sports injuries (bicycling, skiing, etc.)
Patients with clavicle fractures have:
•Pain
•Swelling
•Bruising
•An obvious deformity (bump) may be present at the site of the fracture.
Treatment is usually non-operative
•Ice therapy
•Resting with sling or brace
•It is difficult to reduce the fracture with the use of a sling or brace.
Indications for surgery include
•Open fracture
•Tenting of the skin
•Significant displacement of the fracture
•Overlap or shortening of fragment by 2 cm or more.
Poor functional outcome
It could decrease shoulder muscle strength and endurance.
•Incision is made
•Fracture is exposed
•Reduction of the fracture
•Plating of the fracture
If the fracture does not heal within 3 months, then it is considered to be in nonunion and the treatment is plate and bone graft.
Clavicular fracture with associated extra-articular glenoid neck fracture
•Treatment is controversial. If the clavicle is displaced, stabilizing both fractures can be achieved by reducing and plating the clavicle only.
Distal third clavicular fracture
•Highest rate of nonunion up to 30%.
•Distal fragment remains in place attached to the ligaments while the medial fragment is free and displaced superiorly.
•The nonunion is minimally symptomatic.

I had a clavicle fracture a year ago.
I love to work out. I didn't get surgery. Its naturally perfect, i work out & my hand doesn't shivers at all. Just give it time of two months to repair naturally. Dont loose hope on breaking. Time heals everything. I was a pro bodybuilder & i am without loss.

Don't be so. I lived it. You'll be great again. No matter you get surgery or not. Only thing you're going to miss is sleeping to broken side.
its been 4 weeks from now, Id still feel the crack inside and I think its still not repaired or connected, I dont want to have surgery :(
I broke mine in February this year and I'm in 7th going to 8th and it healed good its just everynow and then I feel really weak idk why but I still lift its gotten better
I also am an avid bodybuilder, and I'm going on my 7th week of healing my clavicle. It's still not fully healed, but it's partially healing. I don't understand why it's taking so long? I hope that the next set of x Rays will show considerable improvement because my shoulder is so weak now, and I need to return to 100% mobility before I go back to work. How was PT for you? Did yours show healing throughout the weeks? Or did it eventually show a ball of new bone out of nowhere?

I have a bump on my right clavicle, but I did not get hurt/fall. I just noticed it when I woke up this morning, how could it had happened?

as the pain subsides advance movement and therapy
there no single good posture for it
each patient is different

about 90 to 95 percent in the surgical group versus 85 percent in the conservative group
the surgical group are displaced and has a severe injury

I've broken mine 4 times already and I'm not even 20 yrs old yet. I've never had to get surgery though and I've full use of my arms with no problems,
Broke my collarbone exactly like in this video, 2 weeks back. Din't go for surgery. Hoping it to heal naturally.

A CT scan is the best option for evaluating a fracture. See a orthopedic doctor far an exam and possible x-ray and/or ct scan studies.
Mine broke about 7 weeks ago and was close to hitting the nervous system. Almost lost my whole arm

Dear sir , I have fractured my one clavical bone medial end sternoclavicular articulated superiarily. It has treated as conservative 2 year's ago but now we felt as stiffness in my neck. I think it proximity part of bone would shortening and overlap on rest of articulated part.

@rvrmouse i fractured my scapula and i think my clavicle is slightly displaced...my doc said it will be fine and the surgery isen't too good...i still have pain after 8 weeks and am going to get a second opinion on the 28th..hopefully i wontvneed surgery but it sticks out weird and feels loose
@dferritto0530 me too fracture scapula with ipsilateral clavicle fracture...here in India doctor said it need surgery..what is the present condition of ur shoulder?
you need to have radiological testing to see how much damage (if any) was done. See a doctor

Plz suggest without surgery option
My right collarbone is shorter than my left and slightly curved in. And I think my acromion is the bone that is sticking out on my shoulder. This happened after a rugby injury. Is this mean that I have broken bones and need a surgery?

great video Dr. Ebraheim. thank you for posting. now i understand what happened to my broken collarbone. it looks like i might need a surgery because the gap is too big (as per the surgeon), greater than 100% inferior displacement. I will found out tomorrow.

Got a plate on my collarbone 2 years ago. Im just scared what will happen if i fall and brake the bone again?! Will the plate snap and pierce through my skin? Sounds fucking scary and im afraid to do any activites and hobbies.

How long does a FRACTURED, not BROKEN Clavical take to heal? My doctor said it was a good fracture, in a good spot. How long untill I'll move it without some sort of pain? Or put pressure on it : Pushups, lifting weights, etc. I fractured it abourt 3.5 weeks ago. Someone help :(

I just fractured my clavicle yesterday trying to jump a gap in mountain biking, the only way to describe it is that your shoulder feels really stiff, and right after impact you can only breathe in very short breathes, and it feels like there is 100 pounds on you’re fractured clavicle

my bone is broken months ago. now i have no pain at alll but the bone still make a nukle sound when i move it but rarely. it's not 100% healed. i didn't see a doctor. do you think it's ok now? no bump but if there ever was its very small and sometimes it disappear.do u think i should see a doctor or am i on the road of healing? can i work out/

Very good video. I injured my clavicle by unracking 295lbs on the bench press alone. The weight wasn't too heavy but I think I got outta position when I unracked it. There is a bump on top of my left shoulder and the pain went away after 4 days. I actually did a shoulder workout with no pain or problems. It hurts very little now but the bump is noticeable. Il take it easy for a week. Is pain a good indicator how much damage there is or not relevant?

Firstly, thank you so much for uploading this video, it was so useful in understanding things and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Secondly, I fractured my left collar bone over 10 years ago and saw a doctor soon afterwards, but little was done. As I have got older (26 now) I still have it causing me pain from time to time and the left side of my chest is a little bigger than my right due to the shortened bone. Is there any grounds for having the an operation now to make things better?

I have an overlapping comunuted fracture and a fractured glenoid which because I am British and don't have insurance the NHS will not fix with surgery. Basically I'm screwed! 3 weeks in and I can't even move my arm but the NHS don't give 2 hoots about it! Now I have to fork out £5k to have it done privately..
I landed on the back of my shoulder neck and back of head from roughly 16 feet off a "40 ft. Jump" on my last snowboarding trip (1 day ago) I went tk hospital but didn't get x rays b/c I didn't feel I nedd them because I have fractured my clavical before. From the doctors observations my clavical is seperated. I can move my arm it is in a sling but Ian mive it. Any comments on what I should do?

Hey so quick question two days ago I was riding my bike and flew off and hit my shoulder on the ground it hurt pretty bad but I got over it the day after I did a lot of heavy lifting and things that hurt alot but I got past them so I went in to get checked and they said it was cracked...but not in The middle instead it cracks into my joint do you think I might need surgery? Will it heal quickly? Thanks!

mine doesn't appear to be fractured, but is bent anteriorly and the sterno-clavicular junction protrudes also. Noise in shoulder, but very little pain. Many incidences of falling with outstretched arms due to unstable left knee.
Closed reduction was done for me-I had been hit from the back while walking on the road by a mini bus which hit a man on luna coming from opposite side-in impact-the bus fell on its side-carrying school kids-man on luna-died on spot-I fell in Dargha area in Camp,Belgaum,Karnataka-recovered memory after about a year-couldn't deep breathe-till 1987 or so due to catchy pain in rib fracture area
I crashed my motorcycle in the rain and fractured my collar bone and cracked my skull I was in shock or something because I picked my bike up and I just remember hearing my arm crack a bunch of times, the bars were bent so I tried to bend them back up enough to be able to turn a bit, rode home bleeding out my earI remember i didn't feel any pain till the next day I went to the hospital
