    I watched A Bronx Tale once again last night. I remember when it was first released, and as a young Italian guy growing up in NYC it was so great to see a story that focused on what it was like to be a kid in that type of neighborhood. Regardless, the film (with its great wisdom and humor) still holds up strong after almost 30 years. 🎥👏🏻

    The wait until the person is in the house has been instilled in me by my Sicilian parents from when I was old enough to understand. It doesn’t matter who they are, if we are dropping someone off, A: Walk them to the door. B: if we can’t walk them to the door, if they insist we don’t have to, NEVER pull away until they are in the house and the door is locked behind them. And unless you’re Italian, the concept of the busta at a wedding reception is like speaking in tongues. We do not walk in with a wrapped gift, that’s what the shower(s) are for.

    A question about the neighborhood.
    Why was Cinelli's movie theater called the Dumps?

    • @cjc4765
      @cjc4765 3 года назад +1

      I can answer that and it's YES ( you can see the demolition of the dumps on RUclips). I spent every Saturday in the mid 50's and early 60's in that "dump". The guy that owned it later on we called "Foamy" ( because he drooled when he talked). The parents loved the place because for 25 cents we'd be gone all day. Admission 25 cents, then they gave you a money envelope that could contain from a penny to a half dollar, then they gave you a ticket with a number on it because at intermission they would show boat races and if your number came out you'd win a prize. Then you had 2 movies and one was usually a horror movie like "The Creature From The Black Lagoon", then some crappy B movie, a 3 stooges episode and about 5 cartoons. Yea, you were there till 6 pm! Then we headed to Badanado's for a 5 cent Ortzata ( which no one can duplicate because the brand of syrup that he used doesn't exist anymore) and the REAL Half Moon for a 15 cent slice of pizza ( which doesn't exist anymore).

    • @cjc4765
      @cjc4765 3 года назад +1

      ( It was a shithole). The bathrooms stunk and were always flooded, they had wooden seats that were always sticky from kids spilling soda on them. Sometimes the lips moved out of synch with the film and you'd hear kids screaming "Louder, Louder, Louder" because the sound would ether fade or go off completely) It was a DUMP!

    • @MrADjam5
      @MrADjam5 3 года назад +1

      @@cjc4765 Thanks! We moved in 68 from 183rd & Beaumont ave. I was 4. Mom and Pop used to talk about the dumps all the time. This fills in the blanks. The Half moon, the REAL one. My Godfather John was the guy who would sit ya when you came in. He passed in the 80's I still go back and take my wife to shop at Borgatti's and Tietel Bros. for the holidays. You have to have 3 of those mini calzones that Sal and Ronny make at Catania's. Not one...three.
      Again. Thanks for the info on the dumps.

    • @cjc4765
      @cjc4765 3 года назад +1

      @@MrADjam5 Me , my brother and my cousin were at Catania the night they opened and they were giving out free pizza ( the only reason we were there ) all they made at that time was square Sicilian pizza and 3 or 4 different calzones. I remember the eggplant calzone, the veal and pepper calzone and the traditional ricotta and Mozz calzone. All square moist and delicious. That s☺️was probably the late 50s maybe 58 or 59.
      I remember the owner of the real Half Moon. His name was Bill. A generous guy ( on the heavy side). When the 3 of us kids would go in for a take out pie( $1.25 at that time) he would give us all a free cream soda so I probably knew your godfather as well. I knew the Teitels well. They wanted to sell me the store in 1970 when I was working at Stockertown Cheese on Arthur Ave. I would see Red Teitel in the morning at the diner next store to Stockertown daily. I eventually opened my own deli ( Laticini/Salumaria) in 73 at the ripe old age of 23.
      I grew up on Borgotis ravioli and Manhattan Special coffee soda.
      What a great place to be back then. I really miss those days 👍

    • @MrADjam5
      @MrADjam5 3 года назад +1

      @@cjc4765 The memories we have have can never be taken away. Sal and Ronny worked for Catania as kids and eventually took the place over and moved it cross the street. Yeah man, those mini ricotta calzones...Like I said I eat three. My Uncle John at the half moon spoke broken english, bald with blue eyes. Cinelli had a club right around the corner of the half moon on Arthur. I used to run back and forth looking for my Pop who would visit when we went back. Congrats on your deli and success. Been eating Borgatti's all my life also. Our culture and our food, I could not imagine growing up any other way.
