Streaming is getting more expensive, adding adverts, and offering more limited catalogues. With this in mind, the benefits of streaming are being rapidly diminished. So I will continue to purchase BluRay and 4K discs. I do somewhat feel that physical media will make a come back in the coming years.
One thing everyone overlooks. Those streaming libraries you've purchased will disappear if the service provider closes shop. They won't be available if you internet is down either.
I love physical media. Some films, especially older or more niche ones, are hard to find on bluray or 4k. You own it and it's yours. Watching movies on streaming, the quality just isn't there, especially for older movies. I was watching an older 90's or late 80's film on streaming, and it looked like 480p. I also took notice the movie would be leaving in 10 days, too, which i dont like. Physically owning a tangible copy that you can proudly display on your shelf is way better.
In the early days of video, the studios were very reluctant to utilize the video market. They wanted to keep films in theaters to make more money. Keeping VHS and BETA prices high and encouraging rentals was one way to try and prevent that. Universal V. Sony was another tactic, but Sony won that case of time shifting.
All about corporate lining their pockets....😂 Got so bad where instead of buying MS Office Suite for your computer, installing it, and using it forever; now you have to subscribe to it, paying yearly fees....CRAZY!! And some video games too!! Meaning you ALWAYS need internet connection....😂
True, although we went from VHS/Beta to LaserDisc to DVD to HD DVD/Blu-ray to 4K Blu-ray and I have to wonder how many movies got re-purchased on newer formats. I know I am guilty of this to some degree. But I think 4K Blu-ray is likely going to be the end of the road.
The need for internet to use streaming services becomes an apparent issue when going up to my family’s secluded vacation cabin where the wifi is not the greatest and it makes it hard to watch movies and tv without buffering so I keep my collection of dvds and blu rays handy.
2023 was the BIGGEST yesr in the HISTORY of physical media. At its peak- DVD sales were 16K per year. Sales slowed when streaming was introduced. During the pandemic it went back up to 16K Last year it was at 22K. The first 5 months of this year did 13K, on track for over 26K.
@GOMoviesGeek Plus, it's so patronising to grown adults. If you watch a movie that has something you find offensive don't watch again. But I don't think cancel culture is really about protecting the individual from offense, its more about pushing what a political movement wants
I'll always hold onto my DVD's and Blurays not only because of the extra content like commentaries and special features but also because at any given moment the whole Wifi can go bust or servers can go down and you won't be able to stream anything by then.
We have a chain in Canada here called Sunrise Records and I recently read that the owners of this chain are looking to bring back HMV for movie and music formats.
The fact that you don’t own digital copies you buy is huge. They can delete them when licenses change and some movies are edited from their original content as well. Big negatives of streaming.
Yeah. There was an early version of a streaming video service -- I can't remember which -- that went out, and they gave their customers lead time and notice so they could download their digital copies. It's still presumably DRM, but it's...something. You can watch it offline with the right app, and legally. There is a 0% chance any of the modern streamers would do that.
I recently watched my DVD copy of the special edition of Fight Club. I purchased that DVD in 2000. So I have had it for 23 years, the DVD played perfectly in 2023. Physical media is a one time purchase that you can enjoy for decades. While I did have 2 DVDs go bad. I have a lot of CDs from the 1990s and a few from the 1980s and I have never had a CD go bad. I also do not have to worry about ads being inserted into my physical media. Just yesterday I received an email from Amazon saying they would start inserting a "limited" number of ads in Prime video starting Jan 29, 2024. I pay for Prime for the free shipping and I do not even watch 30 min a month of Prime video. I still resent having ads added to a service I am already paying for. It reminds me of cable TV which you pay for but still have to sit through commercials.
Physical copy gives you TOP OF THE LINE QUALITY in both audio and video compared to low quality compressed A/V you get from streaming. Physical Forever !!!
Over Christmas break, my local Walmart cut their already short selection of bluray/4k in half. I suspect they will keep a small rack of steelbook type collectors stuff much like they do with their vinyl selection for the enthusiasts. Sad to see, but makes sense not to stock em if nobody is buying.
I think physical is the way to go especially with price increases to streaming services, multiple streaming services, and ad-supported tiers. It's like cable TV all over again. The only downside to physical media is the amount of space it can take up and there's always the risk of discs going bad or your place being broken into and stuff stolen, or natural disasters.
You can purchase alot of dvd/blue rays for almost the price you'd pay online for one veiwing. It's kind of a no brainer . Most ieople only stream because they don't want clutter, but you can get disc walets etc. And it's no different to having a book library anyway.
@@benfisher1376 I guess it's a classic case of pick your poison! But you are right, and I have moved many of my DVD's into wallets (and kept the slip covers in storage), also moved many DVD's into custom sleeves where you can put the slip cover in the front and the movies in the back, as well as paper sleeves for DVD's and Blu-rays. It's made my collection a lot more manageable especially when I am challenged for space for these sorts of things.
Blade runner is available in 4K to buy digitally. There are iTunes Extras available too. I have not done a comparison between 4K digital and a blur ray disc yet. However, the digital version is 4K and you have a 1080p blu ray. Blade runner is also available on 4K disc.
picture quality drop is either somewhat visible (lets's say 5 to10% lower) to really obvious (15% to 25%) to just very lower (25% and more), audio quality is always much lower (but really most people won't see the difference) usually 15% to 50% lower, with no Dolby digital, DTS or LPCM at all, just basic 5.1 (like most NETFLIX) even if now most people know it, when you stop the subscription, you can't see the movie anymore - yes, still lots of people don't understand that and wouldn't pay if they knew it And there's a scandal on Sony for people that "bought" some movies and now they remove it of their catalog, but who are the people making these videos from? it already happened, mainly Netflix amazon and others where movies and series disappear, but even Steam you bought some games and they disappear
Owning vs leasing or renting movies? I collected movies decades ago and have around 700 titles. Yet I finally have a new Sony home theater and I am eager to try out surround sound, and Dolby Atmos. I used to rent movies from Blockbuster. I can still rent movies from Geo, and check out movies from the library on base. Broadcast TV for me is Japanese NHK but it does come in 4K. I also have an AFN decoder for satellite USA TV. I have WIFI 6 in my apartment. I have never streamed anything. My fast internet connection is included in the rent. I just completed research for 50 movie titles 90% of them are 4K Blu Ray. These titles are recommended by home theater enthusiasts and will rock my system. Physical media performs better than streamed media due to the compression algorithms of streaming. My value proposition is that the average cost for +50 titles is $14.28 and I would own them and can watch them multiple times, versus paying a monthly fee to multiple providers, yet not being able to find quality to rock my system. What say you? Total investment $1013.69 off of Amazon USA.
There are pro and cons for general viewing my streaming services are fine but i find there are releases on boutique labels that can be of a higher quality and be worth the cost of owning
I'll always prefer physical. Have a 7,000+ DVD and Blu Ray collection. I could kinda understand the streaming argument like 10 year's ago. Back when Netflix had around 90% of the market and had almost everything on it. But now to stream you need to have a dozen plus service's. At $10 each. I'm good with my physical media collection and my dish network everything package. Also when you ((buy)) digital. You're really not buying it. More of a extended rental. For they can still remove it or shut down their service. Physical it's mine forever.
@@GOMoviesGeek Seems like a lot. But it's small in comparison to other people's collections. Know people with 20,000+ Also 95% of my collection cost $2 or less.
Even if you did stream it will never be the quality of 4k or blu ray . They are telling vibs . Blade runner final cut second hand blu ray is £2:00 in the UK 😂
Some people just don’t get it anymore that pysical is better then digital you mean to tell me that the internet spies on you when you watch movies notgood
I get most of my blu-ray from Bull Moose. They don’t show any signs of slowing down like the major box stores. They have a huge number of films on 4k and Blu-ray. Long live physical media and long live Bull Moose!
I use streaming because of the fact that there are shows I like that you can't get here in America. That or the movies I want to buy aren't available or cost more then I want to pay. The worst part is when want to watch something and it's not available in your area. I have read articles that talk about how even if you us a vpn it can still be detected. One big reason for me to buy physical has to do with the fact that Netflix or whoever can censor what you are watching. Another reason is even if it's not something you can find in your country and they upload it to youtube, the uploader will flip the screen or crop the video. Both are stupid and cropping makes the video harder to watch. I was trying to watch a documentary that I couldn't find to rent and when I found it on here the movies couldn't be watched. There was just a fraction of what you could see and there wasn't enough to even make it worth watching.

What Are Your Thoughts On Physical Media Vs Streaming Or Digital Services?
I generally prefer physical because I like cult movies. A lot of those aren't available at all on streaming services.
Physical media
I have been collecting Physical Media for 34 years and I have no intention of stopping now.
Streaming is getting more expensive, adding adverts, and offering more limited catalogues.
With this in mind, the benefits of streaming are being rapidly diminished.
So I will continue to purchase BluRay and 4K discs.
I do somewhat feel that physical media will make a come back in the coming years.
I agree and I feel a physical media revolution is coming back again with everything going on.
I don’t think it will make a comeback. However, I will still continue to buy physical media.
Yeah
Plus if you buy an intact film on disc it can't be edited etc
It's already made a comeback.
One thing everyone overlooks. Those streaming libraries you've purchased will disappear if the service provider closes shop. They won't be available if you internet is down either.
