    For the sodium hydroxide. 1Lb(16oz)/gal(128oz) is 12.5% solution. Then through a xjet open at 8 gpm 3:1 is 3.125% out the nozzle. So if you wanted to mix to apply straight like in a pump up sprayer it would be 4oz/gal for a 3.125% solution to be equivalent. Would be the same for the oxalic since both are near 100% concentration in powder form.

    Using the caustic beads brings the ph level Very high that's what causes the wood to get darker want to use the oxalic it neutralises that stripper and also brings the ph level down to an even 7 in brightens the wood at the same time. This is the proper way to do any type of wood.
    Using SH and oxalic acid is not it's actually breaking down the woodfibre. Great video Mike keep it up buddy

    • @GuardianPressureWashing
      @GuardianPressureWashing 4 месяца назад +1

      I wouldn’t recommend using sodium hydroxide unless your plan is to strip the finish off of wood. It’s caustic, has a strong base, and can affect lignin and wood fibers. In comparison, SH isn’t as prone to altering the wood fibers, at least not in lower concentrations. Rinse the wood extremely well (with either cleaning agent). Leaving your chemical on too long can lead to oxidation that could eventually lead to cracking and splintering. Both chemicals will throw off the PH balance when applied. Follow up either chemical with an oxalic acid treatment to rebalance the PH and brighten the wood.

    I guess that the concentration of each chemical made the difference. The X jet brought down the solution to a lower percentage. I can tell that the SH ate the color of the wood way more.

  • @Vulcan5911
    @Vulcan5911 3 года назад +14

    Try using a direct spray application and not downstreaming or X jetting, and always rinse the wood first so as to create a barrier to keep the chemicals from soaking to far into the wood and keep them cleaning/restoring the top of the wood instead. 3oz of sodium hydroxide, 3oz of sodium metasilicate per 1 gal of warm/not hot water. Let dwell 15 minutes and then pressure rinse. Then apply oxalic acid at 8oz per 1 gal warm water direct spray application. I let mine sit for 20 minutes and then rinse. Some people let the Ox sit and don't rinse at all. It's up to you.

    • @Nodeagent
      @Nodeagent 2 года назад +1

      Hey Chris , do you combine the metasilicate and hydroxide together? And I've heard some people say 16oz of either, how does the 6oz/gal stack up for you? I imagine it'd be a significantly milder treatment and give me longer dwell time before it starts over stripping/damaging the wood and that would enable me to spray an entire deck, dock and siding before having to start rinsing- is that accurate?

    • @Vulcan5911
      @Vulcan5911 2 года назад +3

      8 oz of hydroxide is used for stripping. Since we are not stripping but rather restoring the bare wood you wouldn't need as much to do so. The Sodium Metasilicate is used along with the hydroxide because it helps whiten the wood better than hydroxide but is weaker than hydroxide. That's why I mix the 2 together at 3 oz each. And don't let it dwell any longer than around 15 minutes. After that it will soften the wood to much and when u pressure wash it it can fur up worse. I've gone 20 minutes before and it's just much. Only do that if you are stripping stains off that are hard to get off. Then your dwell times can be longer.

    • @Nodeagent
      @Nodeagent 2 года назад

      @@Vulcan5911 Brilliant. No harmful reactions mixing the two I suppose? Can I get a nice, bright restoration without hydroxide? I fear anything that whitens as it reminds me of the damage happening with bleach

    • @Vulcan5911
      @Vulcan5911 2 года назад +3

      @@Nodeagent no it won't be that type of whitening like bleach. Just more natural looking is what I mean. Both hydroxide and metasilicate are used as strippers. Metasilicate is just somewhat weaker but makes the wood look better especially after the brightening process with Oxalic. Normally if you were going to use hydroxide to restore wood which you can you would use it at a lessor percentage than the normal 8 oz for stripping. Normally around 4oz. The added metasilicate just makes the wood look even more natural. It doesn't hurt at all to mix them. Obviously always use protection like gloves, goggles, respirator etc when using these types of raw Chems.

    • @Nodeagent
      @Nodeagent 2 года назад

      @@Vulcan5911 awesome, thanks Chris. I’ve got a huge deck staining project that I can’t spend time pressure washing. It doesn’t have old stain to strip as it was a transparent oil stain. I’m going to try your methods here. Does Sodium Metasilicate alone work slower than Hydroxide alone? Wondering if it would dwell longer than 15 minutes

    What benefits do you find for using the oxalic acid after the sodium hypochlorite/sodium oxide? I currently have my fence half done, and only used sodium hypochlorite but looks bleached. If I pressure wash beneath the fence that was treated with sodium hypochlorite there is a natural color. Are you suppose to pressure wash after first chemical application? Then just apply oxalic acid, let it sit, and then rinse that oxalic off?

    Question:
    Do you think it would be bad if the oxalic acid step was done the next day? I did a large wood deck project and it took 2 days to clean it (Please don't judge lol I was alone using a pump sprayer with about a 2% mix of SH, with so many banisters, railings, crisscross undersides, etc.) and the next day I came back and did the oxalic step after pre-soaking and post rinsing after 10-15 minutes.
    I'm hoping it still neutralizes the sodium hypochlorite, but I'm going back tomorrow to see the final result when it's fully dried. (Weather permitting lol)

    Sorry bud, What you did was destroy the fibers in the wood because you didn't pre soak the wood before using sodium hypochlorite. Its not how bright the wood is after Hypochlorite. When the job is complete the darker honey color from hydroxide is the natural color and what the aim should be.
    Hypochlorite did exactly what it does... Bleach the wood..... not clean it.
    Without pre soaking, the hypochlorite was locked into the interior of the wood fiber which cant be rinsed and destroys the internal fibers.
    Also, if the fence were to be stained the Hypochlorite will react with whatever color stain and will be lighter than the stain should be.
