As a retired hospice nurse, I can’t tell you the number of my patients who kept their “treasures”locked away or in boxes in the garage for decades, only to have them carried to the curb after their passage by family who didn’t want to be bothered or didn’t know the stories connected to the items. USE your best stuff, take pleasure in it, share the stories, enjoy it now…the world, your health, the weather, the fates are all so fragile-everything could be gone in an instant-or taken to the dumpster after you have passed. The lovely table honors the beauty and fragility of life!

Beautiful video ~! 😊I Love the creativity and sentimental value put into this project. It looks absolutely gorgeous. It makes me want to go find a table in an op shop someplace and see if I can replicate something similar. Though I haven't any china dishes from my grandma but maybe I can find those in an op shop too. Everything about this video draws me in, inspires me and makes me smile. Enjoy your lovely spiring tulips beautiful gal~! Ps. Your little fairy is growing so much and is so cute toddling about through the daffodils .🥰

Lovely video, Niamh. :) I'm still in recovery from a huge op, so a gentle month of healing and lots of meditation for me. Considering I'm stuck indoors 24/7, the month also flew here, I have no idea how when I do so little physical stuff! We've had very little rain in my corner of the NE of England this winter, so quite the opposite to your place - and only 3 single (separate) days of snow all winter! Unheard of! Climate change is definitely real. :/ I love love LOVE your table, it looks fabulous! Also love hearing your little fairy chattering in the background, so cute. :) Have a lovely end to the month x

Be careful with old dishes, a lot of glazes contained trace amounts of lead. This would not be ok for the little fairy. I looked my grandmothers dishes up by the maker’s stamp on the bottom, and was surprised to find out the glaze had lead in them. They are still pretty to look at but I won’t be using them again.

Live your life, use your stuff… that’s my motto. I grew up in a home where special things were kept stored away and they rarely saw the light of day. When my Mom passed away I barely knew the stories behind any of these special family heirlooms. My partner and I are passionate DIY-ers. He is amazingly talented; he can make the most unique and creative things out of nothing. He made our round greenhouse out of a giant old-school 1980’s satellite dish which is the domed roof. Two of my favourite projects that I DIY (using repurposed items) are bags that I make by sewing together empty Kool-Aid pouches (lots of those in the trash at the high school where I teach), and also outdoor mini-tables made from cable spools (we have a friend who is an electrician). Niamh, this table is stunning and full of charm, and I can see that it will bring you so much joy every time you use it. I love DIY projects such as this. I have never seen anything like this amazing project, what a cool idea!! If you’re inclined to do more projects such as this, I’m 100% inclined to watch them. Thanks so much for this lovely March video. I look forward to seeing what comes in April. Thanks and I hope you have lots of sunny days ahead this Spring. Take care my friend, Ⓜary💕🌲

Over the years I have learned it is far more respectful to my heirlooms to use them rather than keep them tucked away in fear of losing them. Yes, some may get cracked or broken but they were loved and useful! My little fairies (now 24 and 19.. and I don’t know how that happened so fast!) loved being outside and also liked to give the plants extra water! To give the plants a break, I would give the kids a bucket of water and paint brushes to “paint” the fence! Saved water and my plants from drowning! Lol. I used some broken plates to make stepping stones for the garden. Lovely video, thank you!

I agree with you, I’d rather use my things and think about the person until the items break apart. My grandmother passed in the spring two years ago and she was the one who gifted me with almost everything I needed for my own home through my childhood. I did get certain items from her house when she passed which makes me think about her everytime I use them. I think that’s a lovely way to remember someone.

I love being sentimental over family items passed down. But the very best way to show our love and respect is to use these things! I recently passed on my mother's tea set to my 10 year old granddaughter who had always loved it. My mother had passed years before my granddaughter was born so she'd never known her. But my son( granddaughter's dad) got very tearfully sentimental over this gift. He and my mom had a very tight bond and often got into old lady-little boy mischief together! I have other teasets for daily use. Why save that one and stash it away in some musty old cupboard? I was able to tell my granddaughter how much my mom loved and cherished her dad and that I knew she would have loved her too and would have wanted her to have that tea set. ❤

Oh I loved this video, it really resonates with me. I like to use beautiful things I get from charity shops, and have broken many loved things over the years, we have many (often chipped) hand-made ceramics I love and use, but my best china, bought and both my Granny's and Grandma's (theirs is still in moving wrapping) I simply don't dare to get out! I have arthritis in my hands, small children, a chaotic small house!!! i look forward to a time when we can enjoy them, as much as I love the children being small, I love having a little fairy with me, (and her little hands, and her sister's, would love to hold fine china - then we could make a table and use it much more!). Thank you for a lovely video I found it very moving and powerful, to see you sitting there at the end, beautiful and dignified, thinking of your Grandmother, now a mother of a daughter, the generations of women represented in a powerful way. Beautiful.

Whenever I saw something, I save the scraps of fabric and then when I have enough scraps, I make a little something to give away. I am a new grandmother of a first grandchild, and I have been making him little receiving blankets, wash cloths, and even bath towels out of some of the fabric that I have used in the past. Of course, sometimes I fill in with a little new fabric such as flannel in this case, but it’s amazing how much fun it is to come up with something from what I already have - and then to see him in it!

Then after watching the tips from the channel ‘little DIY’ I made a mix of more chickpea flour with equal amounts flaxseed gel (your recipe), some green tea and a few drops of essential oils: great results! Not too dry, well cleaned hair, good curls, less itchy scalp (than with regular shampoo) and I can now go longer between washes as my hair does not get so greasy. I have my great grandparents China, actually, it is down to one bowl (which looks exactly like yours), through the years, one would be broken, until, alas, one bowl is left and I keep that one high above, in view, and am really, really careful but if I had a set, I would bring it out and use it on special occasions. I know I can buy a new set, but not the same. Oh, the wee little one is growing!! She looks adorable. The weather around the world is all messed up, nothing is "normal" these days, just going with the flow...God Bless, stay strong, keep the faith...

The table is gorgeous and the family tie makes it even more special! I have been saving bites of broken china for years to do the same…you have inspired me to get going; thank you. 💚☘️🌷 happy spring.

I've always loved mosaic tables but never done one, yours is beautiful. 🤩I am mostly an avid knitter and gardener. What an amazing spot to have your tea in that field of daffodils.....Wow! You are fortunate. Your lovely little fairy is getting so big! Interesting you are getting more rain than usual, here on Vancouver Island has been worryingly dry this winter and we have been having very long, dry summers last few years. Not good for the poor trees🌲🌳💚 Sending much love

My goodness. Thank you for all the beauty and peace you’ve added to my day. This was exceptionally beautiful. I loved listening to the chirping birds as you were working on it. Each plate was gorgeous and the finished product turned out beyond lovely. You have a talent for understanding and capturing how special and blissful life can be. I loved all the appearances of yellow, too. This video was art, a painting in motion.

A very pleasing project. As you spoke I recall a story told me about my ancestors.
One family had a house fire. When a sister heard of it, she sent her husband walking 50 miles to bring dishes so they would never miss a beat.
I’m in Michigan, USA and the time would have been late 19th century or early 20th century. Such strong bonds!

I have had the idea to do this exact same DIY for years and not done yet because I’ve never done it before😅. I have been storing broken beautiful cups, plates and tiles from myself and one of my best friends and I have a square table in my city garden. Now I am encouraged just do it! Thanks Niamh! Send you my love from Alkmaar in the Netherlands.

I haven't made a mosaik table yet but would absolutely love to and hope I will sometime soon. There's a wedding tradition in the region where I grew up to break old ceramics on a Party before weddings for lots of good luck. About 15 years ago I made a (fruit) bowl as a wedding present for friends from their families' broken china and a thrifted ceramic bowl. My sister got a Mosaic fruit bowl using broken tiles I had picked up on different occasions. My husband and I made a large Mosaik plant pot together as a wedding present for friends. Also I participated in a little workshop using clay as grout for indoors. I have since saved some more beautiful ceramic pieces and look forward to more mosaic projects which I agree can be so therapeutic. Best wishes and much love from Berlin 🌿💚🍀

That looks beautiful! I use my things but they are not heirlooms - all second hand, handmade pottery for dinnerware so it's sturdy. It's a lovely tribute to your grandmother and her china, and also in keeping with the old way of making do. Thanks for sharing!

I have two vintage dinner services that I inherited. One was bought in Bavaria just after the second world war and was fired at such a high temperatures it has always been microwaveable! The pattern is called Blue Danube and we use it every day. There are quite a number of pieces that need replacing and they are still available in resale places in the US. The cost of importing them is prohibitive though. I love that china.
The other set is Noritake from Japan and is a hundred years old. It’s very delicate and has been sitting in storage since I returned to Ireland five years ago. Using them is very important because the oils in our skin keep them from getting too brittle. Unfortunately I have nowhere to display them so they stay in the boxes. There’s only two of us living here so there’s a limit to how much china we can use. I love this set as well. Both sets came from my husband’s family.
I love what you did with the table! What a wonderful idea! ❤

Yes, I use my fine china, cloth napkins, good tablecloths, and lovely dresses on a daily basis.
After my Dad passed away, all the nice clothes he kept unworn in the closet went to other people, worn by other people. My Mom finally got out her fine china and used them. She broke some but she felt it is better to enjoy them now that she is still alive.
It is better to wear things out, break some things BUT have them enjoyed.
What good do they do sitting inside boxes gathering dust? Same with telling us human never to venture outside for fear that dust and sunlight will make our skin dirty. Lol.
