  • 2003 Saturn Vue. This tranny is also known as an AF33-5 and also RE5F22A. Around the 48 minute mark is a kinda hiccup, I missed the ring gear and had to go back and that is the best I could get it to come out with the limited time I have to devote to this.

    I have a Volvo with this unit in it. Recently I purchased a Sonnax reman valve body for it and would also like to replace the wiring harness. Where would you go to find such an animal?

      WIT, Transtar or dealer. My advice would be to get a factory one, don't do aftermarket ones.

    How confident are you that the solenoids on a rebuilt valve body are adjusted properly?
    And how about a new valve body?

      Took out the SLT test port plug. The hex head is 12mm and the bolt thread appears to be M8x 1.0. Definately 1.0 thread pitch but the thread seems to be rounded over a bit as if the hole wasnt fully tapped for 100% thread. Bolt is not tapered like a pipe thread but the hole may be. The bolt uses an o -ring seal. Adapter is on order. I anticipate needing to remove a bit from the adapter's major thread diameter. Not a lot of room to work on a Volvo. That sucks. My pan cover has holes so I can adjust solenoids.

    Thank you sir. I just sent my transmission in to get rebuilt and wanted to see what the procedure looked like. Do I need to flush and fill the transmission after a rebuild?

    • @CurmudgeonTransmission
      @CurmudgeonTransmission  3 года назад +1

      Unless you are pulling it out and replacing it yourself they should do all that for you? If so then yes the lines need to be flushed out and you will need to fill it with fluid.

      You are going to want to use an Ultra Black or Grey. Regular is not going to cut it. Will deteriorate quickly.

    I have a Volvo XC90 and the transmission is in fail safe and starting off in 3rd gear. I can reset it and it will start in 1st but suddenly goes back to fail safe. When I reset it the P and the other gear ranges show on the indicator on the dash but as soon as it goes to fail safe they go away. Also when I reset it the reverse lights come on but as soon as it goes to fail safe they go away also. The transmission pulls and works but keeps going to fail safe. Any suggestions? I have been told that it is the valve body having issues.

    • @CurmudgeonTransmission
      @CurmudgeonTransmission  3 года назад

      It's possible as that is the biggest problem with this transmission, but there are plenty of other things that will put it in failsafe as well. If it is going to failsafe before it has had time to shift it may be a speed sensor problem. I need to know what codes are being stored in the computer.

    I’m planning to buy a Volvo with the same transmission that needs to be rebuilt. Do you think I could manage to do it on my own? Should a professional do it instead?
    Brilliant job 👌🏽

    • @CurmudgeonTransmission
      @CurmudgeonTransmission  3 года назад

      Thanks. Depends on how mechanically inclined you are and if you have a way to compress the return springs in the drums. It is a little more difficult than some but I think doable with this video. Make sure when you buy the new valve body if you have a no code or an A code they will more than likely sell you a C code, sometimes a B. Either way if you have A or earlier you will need a new wiring harness as well as they are different in length.

    Will the valvebody interchange from 2 wheel to all wheel drive?

    • @CurmudgeonTransmission
      @CurmudgeonTransmission  3 года назад +1

      As far as I know. The only differences is the letter codes and the wiring harness for that code, and the spring or no spring that goes behind the valve I show you to check. But I will do some searching and double check that it will.

    Is this the same transmission that's in a 03-11 Saab 9-3? If so, would the gm valve body be the same?

    • @CurmudgeonTransmission
      @CurmudgeonTransmission  3 года назад

      There are 4 different transmissions that could be in there. If it is a AW55 you should be able to look down past the air breather and there will be a metal tag that will say it on there. If it is the AW55 then yes it is the same. Always check the solenoid and spring I talk about.

    • @shushdeeni1068

    Can't you do the rebuild of the tf80sc? And not possible to make closer footage? The camera is too far.

    • @CurmudgeonTransmission
      @CurmudgeonTransmission  3 года назад +2

      Just uploaded the AWTF80SC video a couple of days ago. I can only do video's as the units come in, don't have them just laying around. As I get ones in I have not done a video on I do one. Also changed the camera around and it worked some what, camera was a little bouncy. Hard to get the camera close but not in the way. This is a working high production shop and I don't have the luxury of taking lots of time to try and get everything perfect. Working on it though.

    What's the average cost to rebuild those aw55?

    • @CurmudgeonTransmission
      @CurmudgeonTransmission  4 года назад +3

      I don't deal with the pricing end of it so I am not up to date on the latest costs of all the parts. To do it right with a new valve body, probably 3000-4500 I would say. New valve body alone you are probably looking at 12-1500 just for it. Worn out valve bodies are the biggest problem with this unit, as are most transmission now days.

    this is a reliabe transmission? what care is taken to avoid problems?

    • @CurmudgeonTransmission
      @CurmudgeonTransmission  3 года назад +2

      Transmission is, valve body is where the problem is. Very prone to wear. If you stop driving it when the problems first start appearing and replace the valve body that is all that needs to be done. The longer it is driven the more damage that is created. Don't think there is anything you can do to prevent the valve body problems, but normal maintenance, changing the fluid about every 30,000 can't hurt.
