  • In this interview with Frank Doherty, 219th Aviation Company, we discuss an encounter he had with a Cambodian T-28 fighter pilot, his take on modern aviation and 'flying the plane', how the 219th operated in adverse weather conditions, what he carried inside the Bird Dog with him and how he used White Phosphorus grenades for markin, his take on reunions with the 219th, and a very eventful trip to the 'Stone Elephant'.

Interesting and compelling interview. I flew 767s with Frank at Delta and always enjoyed being crewed with him flying JFK-Europe trips. He was the consummate professional and always enjoyable company on those long hauls. I recall chuckling when he told me he flew Bird Dogs in the “Cambodian Highway Patrol” but also remember being in awe as he shared a few memories of what it was like. Only a handful of colleagues from my military and airline career stand out in my memory. Frank is one of them. I look forward to reading his book. Glad this video popped up in my YT feed.

Good video. I agree with his assessment of today's pilot's lack of basic airmanship. As I retired from 47 years of professional flying with many type ratings and 22'000 + hours of flight time, I could see this in the incoming newer pilots.
