    Would love to see something like a III+ get shot with a 30-06 AP but at a more realistic distance (something like 150-200yds) to see if it can stop it. A round like that is most likely to be on a hunting rifle. I doubt Bubba will be clearing a room with a rifle with a 26" barrel and a 15× scope shooting one of these rounds.

    Looks like for a Special Threat plate they had to significantly make it thicker compared to other ST plates in order to stop M80 ball. Especially the NIJ rated one which is 1.5" thick.

  • @0megaJB
    @0megaJB 2 года назад +1

    In reality, the hghest likelyhood threat anyone would face would be M855 193 and M80 which is what makes regular level 3 iffy. It's good to see a good option under level 4 weights and not breaking the bank.

    I like to see him shoot against a solid packer so the plate isn't giving so much.
    Like a big block of clay thats molded to fit the armor. More like body. When the plate can move and give , it doesn't give a true representation of how well the armor actually works or doesn't work.

    • @BuffRANGE
      @BuffRANGE 2 года назад +2

      This is very true. I'd even offer to build the box I use for Mike, but I'm not sure he's able to lift stuff like that as it would be approaching 100 lbs with clay. His dirt box is fine for a medium, but he really needs to strap the plates down because he's not getting maximum energy transfer aka worst case. Menards has straps for pretty cheap.

      I wish all hard plate reviews had a quality iiia soft panel behind the hard plate.
      I couldn't care less about back face deformation!
      What I want to know is the bullet stopping power of a soft panel behind a hard plate ... if the round makes it through the hard plate!

    • @kenofken9458
      @kenofken9458 2 года назад

      @@nutsnfancy I wouldn't have much confidence in the IIIA stopping a round that cleanly punched through the plate. Some plates are sold to achieve a certain level "ICW" in conjunction with soft armor, but most people buying plates these days seem to use them alone in carriers. Personally I think it makes sense to use any plate along with soft armor to cover more area at least from handgun rounds or fragments. You don't realize how little anatomical real estate a 10x12 plate covers until you put one on.

    Looks like LAPG Lvl 3 still wins on price, and 30-06 black tip stopping, but heavier & single curve. Botach 3+ wins on weight, multi-curve, holding together better (lost less ceramic), and appears to have less backface deformation. With 20% Mr.G&G coupon, these are price competitive with LAPG at $111.00. Though, LAPG did an $85/plate free shipping deal which was an insane value.

    • @DMF716
      @DMF716 2 года назад +1

      The ceramic is what stops the initial shock of the bullet and hopefully breaks the bullet to pieces. The plastic slows it down and the heat from the bullet makes it liquefied briefly, and captures it.
      The reason why you don't wear it backwards, cause nothing breaks up the bullet except the person who wore it backwards as it smashes in to his Thorasic cavity.....and dies.

    Another solid vid, but the NIJ battlesteel armor IS NOT the same. All of its thicker by half an inch or so vs non-NIJ, due to what appears to be a newtonian foam insert after base level 3/3+ plate and then a few additional layers of soft panels behind the foam -- the purpose of these layers is primarily to reduce backface deformation to w/in NIJ specs (non-NIJ thin panels simply can't meet that spec even if they stop penetration) but that add'l material may also increase ballistic protection. At one point one of the battlesteel NIJ options on botach showed a cutaway graphic showing the foam and add'l soft armor layers...
    Personally, I add level 3a soft armor and a trauma pad (some botach level 3a have had in the past integral foam in them even though not advertised) behind my non-NIJ 3+ battlesteel plates (usually run 11x14 soft and 10x12 hard for carriers that allow), which allows for easy removal if not needed, instead of transferring armor between various carriers... None of the level 3a+ soft armor I've ordered from Botach has had any foam in them however.

Backface deformation is quite another matter entirely with those bigger calibers but I would never be impressed if a plate stopped .308 or 45-70. It's 5.56 from longer barrels that will defeat your armor. 30-06 black tip won't go through lv4 but 5.56 black tip can.

Now I’m told that I will be issued store credit once they receive the wrong plates back. Then I can reorder the correct plates again and just pray that the right plates get shipped out I guess. My brother ordered the same plates as me a couple days later and received the less expensive plate also. My theory, which I hope is wrong, is that this is an intentional choice on Battle Steel’s part to profit more from customers who don’t realize it’s a cheaper plate. Then when someone does confront them about it, instead of just sending out the correct plates, they keep your money and issue store credit. Now my money is tied up and I risk the correct plates being out of stock by the time they get the wrong plates back. I’m also concerned that the wrong plates will show up again.

    I appreciate the testing for penetration and it's performance is impressive. However, I am concerned with how much force is still being delivered by those rounds to the body via the consequent "impact bulges" on the back side of the plate. Enough force to knock the wind out of a person, enough to break ribs, rupture internal organs, etc. This is information I have not seen published by any mfr or tester that I have yet viewed.

      @@lnstall_Wizard As I understand it, plates have to meet the deformation and other standards independently if they want the III or IV rating from NIJ. III+ isn't even an NIJ rating. It's a thing made up by manufacturers for an overbuilt Level III plate designed to defeat M855 and M193 rounds.
      Most plates I've seen seem to be sold and rated as standalone protection. That said, I have seen some that are listed as "in conjuction with" ICW, which means that their rating depends on their use along with IIIA or some other configuration. I'm not sure if NIJ even recognizes that at all or how they handle it.
      I would agree as a general matter that it's a good idea to pair plates with a soft vest. Those 10x12 plates cover some really critical organs, but it's still a lot less coverage than a wraparound vest. At the same time, that soft armor isn't going to stop or even inconvenience a fast rifle round like 5.56. If that round hits anywhere besides the hard plate, you're screwed.
      It really depends on the specific threat. For most civilians even in this crazy country, they're much more likely to encounter handgun fire. A good IIIA soft vest will stop a barrage of those rounds by itself. It you happen to have a hard plate in as well, bonus! It's going to reduce the felt impact of a 9 mm to negligible. It's going to give you stab protection and will block some of the exotic high velocity handgun rounds like 5.7 FN which the soft armor might not otherwise handle.

    I'm not comfortable with the fact that they are selling plates advertised as Level III, and level III+ right next to NIJ certified level III, and III (+special threat) that are listed as much heavier and thicker than the non certified. I wonder if the real reason they are selling non-certified plates is because they won't pass the certification, but tend to stop the "rated" threats... usually...

      And that's OK Mr. Pritchard. They were a growing company, like many others in the armor industry that recently sprung up. At 25k per plate test, that's some money. Either way you have a choice. I choose the lighter weight plates. I have 2 different sets. Level III and Level III+.
      I also have a good set of SPARTAN ARMOR plates. (1st set I bought almost 7 years ago.

      TIdbit. Their NIJ certified model isn't made by Longfri (who makes the battle steel plates). It's made by Tencate, and they easily can pay for NIJ certification. Price reflects the investment cost for that. Quite a few longFri plates at one time had NIJ certification, but they do not any longer. Why, don't know, LongFri would have to tell us why they aren't. From what I've been told the ROI for NIJ CPL is 5000-6000 plates per model per year. I can see Botach easily doing that for LongFri, not to mention the OEM's they sell too. Maybe it's they can't prove logistics. I am not sure if LongFri's factories are US, or Chinese based.

      For not rated plates they seem to be proven performers. Especially for the price point. Just because something has an nij rating dosent mean it isnt susceptible to manufacturing or quality control failures. It's not like ceramic plates get tested before they leave the factory.
      I do agree with sketchy and misleading advertising being worrisome. However these seem to hold up to especially for being non rated.
