  • Your rankings have slipped, you begin to knee jerk / panic and start pulling hair out over losses - how are we going to get back?
    Clear your index up first.
We start with a simple item from search console not indexed data:
    PAGE WITH REDIRECT
Eliminate all internal redirection where the redirections are at least 6-8 weeks old or older. Get rid of links to old URL sources and update. Crawl your website with Screaming Frog's SEO Spider, when the crawl is finished - all URLs with a redirect status i.e. 301, 302, 308 - select the paths and at the bottom select the INLINKS tab.
Export your list of URL references (containing FROM / TO) paths - where the FROM URL contains a link to the redirect path.
Update internal links to eliminate the need for internal redirection.
With internal redirection eliminated - it's time to look at non-linked redirects that may have built up over time - many NON internally redirects can be removed if they offer no external link equity nor traffic redirection from other sources i.e. referral.
CHECK FOR EXTERNAL LINKS WITH EXPORTED "PAGE WITH REDIRECT DATA"
Export the list of sample URLS from Google Search Console
Go to AHREFS and select the BATCH ANALYSIS tool from the top menu bar under MORE
Copy 200 URLS at a time into the batch analysis
Run it and export to CSV
Then copy the export data to your exported page with redirect data sheet
Here you can see which redirects (non internal) divert link equity. At this point you can review redirect target suitability
Additionally - we should look to see if any of the sample URL paths still receive traffic via other sources in Google analytics. I will cover this with a video in a separate post - effectively - we can remove any legacy redirects where there are no referring domains or traffic from legacy third party links / sources that aren't accounted for as an external link.
SEO and the outcome is often the culmination of lots of factors - but, the reality is - refining and cleaning your index, reducing the discovery and crawl of non essential paths is key.
Running a TIGHT index is better - it reduces the likelihood of cannibalisation and the distribution of link equity to non value pages.
