Incredible, lifting those massive, white-hot connecting rods onto the anvil and turning them by hand under the hammer! I almost can't imagine a job like that not being done entirely by machines. Building these things was a lot of manual labor.
These men had every reason to be proud of their great skills. If only we could bring such skill and pride back to a new generation of young British men and free our country of its current toxic mess.

If anyone from the British Rail Government/Board from those days was alive up until today, I don't think that person would let even one steam locomotive or any of the carriages be scrapped unless they had cracks or faults.

Not really. Commentators of the day usually spoke in what's known as "Received pronunciation." Wouldn't do to have unwashed heathen Northerners commentating on serious stuff like this....
Proper railways, none of this efficient clean electric nonsense. Steam traction. Labour intensive to build, run and maintain. Dirty, noisy and inefficient. But oh so desirable....
The good old days of British engineering. It's a shame Britain hardly build any of their own trains anymore.
Yes... it’s a shame... that they are using trains built by foreign companies...
Jeremy Clarkson: Because That Saves Money!
I know. It's not like we didn't invent the bloody things or anything....
My son loves trains and we enjoyed watching this.

and no protection from the heat...These were hard men and it was a hard job...
I can understand how hard it looks, yes they were hard men but it wasnt that hard at all...well drilled teamwork.

What a marvellous film, captured from long ago. The music is also quite buoyant. Don’t forget the piccolo part.
Thank you for posting...,very interesting
When the music started I thought it was going to be a Tom and Jerry cartoon 😅
Those poor riveters, deaf before old age. At least we've got ear defenders nowadays.
I love this stuff.
Respect for those working man!

Perhaps made for export based on the cowcatcher at the front
Why does the sound stop?
The good old days when all the boiler makers were deaf and had capstan full strength for breakfast.
Excellent video
Amazing! And the music is hilarious. Reminds me of loony toons
Back when drivers weren't afraid to push these beauties to their limits
How much time they was taken for built on locomotive..
Proper engineering this, not like today where companies go for the cheapest option
Amazing very cool
Bring back main line steam and the works with them.
Why does the sound keep on cutting out?
Every heritage railway and replica builder should definatley learn a thing or two!..
It's obnoxious how the sound keeps cutting out. Hopefully they find another copy of this footage and restore the sound someday
How do we know those aren’t just tiny people making live steam models?
There was a "Hornby" in the credits!
Tough men.
Tough machines.
Look like it's been re-cut, I don't think they made so fast cuts back then
Music and narration keeps cutting out!
The engine assembly at Crewe be like:
love this 😉😉😉
rather annoying the music and commentary stop though
nice one
no protective eyewear. those were the days.
no hearing protection or hard hats either...
@@Builder99 no heat protection too
Everybody wearing a cloth cap and sweater. A fat lot of good they were. Kept the sparks off, I suppose.
Some eye protection 2:04 & 2:29 though probably not as much as these days.
How are these engines tested out?
I like how he says "boiler"

Why can't they make more steam engine not dumb nasty smelly diesels 😒😒😒

Let’s start selling steam engines to the world & put the Great back into Britain, someone send this onto Bojo.
Those where the days now there ruined with silly buzz boxes andsquare boxes on wheels except shunters.
