STARSECTOR MENTIONED I’ve been looking into playing that game for years after watching Sseth’s video, but never pulled the trigger. Super excited to get videos to show me how the game plays out.
It's well worth the plunge. The game looks complicated and there's definitely a lot of depth to be had if you go looking for it but I'd say the learning curve is quite gradual all things considered. It's the epitome of a Sandbox. The difficulty comes from your own endeavours and your chosen playstyle. More importantly, Starsector has a very active and talented modding community. There are hundreds of mods to explore, ranging from minor QoL and graphical changes to expansive total conversion mods that heavily impact the game. If you enjoy playing Sandboxes like Kenshi, you'll probably enjoy Starsector. I guess my main advice if you want to ease your way into the game would be to commission for a faction and stick to the Coreworlds to do missions until you have a handle on things, gained a few levels and upgraded your fleet a little. Or you can fly solo doing the same. You don't have quite as big a financial security net but on the bright side, you don't have to pay attention to faction politics as much. Bonus tip: Any weapon, mod or ship blueprints you sell on the Black Market *will* end up mysteriously appearing in pirate fleets. So be sure that you only sell those things you are willing to face on the regular. Everything other than blueprints is fine though.
I highly recommend you go pick it up and start as an explorer/trader to learn the mechanics while only taking on easy battles. Once you get more comfortable the real game can start
You could make a vid about "Should you make a base?" Playing for Kenshi for a couple hundred hours i started to feel that bases are most time an self imposed difficult than something necessary, even more in a modded game. By the way love your videos.
Bast is Imo is where you want to Elite-fy your army due to how much stats these guys have and you can forgo your prisoner training grounds since there's a lot of troops around here for you to train, if you can handle them and the constant glitching through your walls that is
I built a city sized mega base in the large flat area just south of the destroyed town of Bast on my Son of a Captain playthrough. It has a copper node and 100% stone, I get iron mostly by melting HN armor but the three iron nodes in the destroyed town of Bast are close enough for characters to path from there to my base. I named my city New Bast. Retaking bast was a major goal of that playthrough so it was thematically appropriate. Bast is a lot easier to live in if you are allied to one of the major factions there. Also world state changes can make it easier, for example taking out the high inquisitors causes HN patrols to become less frequent and numerous. Destroying HN completely replaces them with Strayed Paladins.
I did a pretty successful Bast base, was top middle on a mountain just North of the S on that map. Built a wall around it (was only 2 real ways up the cliffs so much of the wall was for aesthetics. Had to build an outer section of the base to the south east for ore, and I feel like I was short on copper. xD Sometimes I'd jump over to my base and literally find a massive war happening outside the gates where multiple armies have spread around into 1v1 fights across the rendered field of view. Not sure why that'll happen but happens when I load in those fighting units. Still quite epic to watch from my high ground castle with tower harpoons and gate Gatling harpoons at the ready.
personally i think bast is the best area to set up a base early you just need to change your approach. 1. stay friendly with the holy nation and united cities. 2. set up your base in an area thats surrounded by battle, more consistent the fighting the better 3. never answer the door congratulations you just turned the danger of bast to 0. literally no one will attack you since whenever united cities send tax brigades they will fight and die to holy nation eventually leaving without a payload. and whenever the holy nation sends a prayer squad they will run into samurai who will distract them long enough to screw off and leave you alone. no penalties for the factions since you didnt attack them their enemy did heck you can even have healer squad wander about in bast to try and up your relationship with the factions little by little if you want
Been watching for awhile. Subscribed. I like all the things you talk about for importance factors as it's a good litmus even for dudes with mods. As a (mostly) vanilla guy, I like how simple and straightforward you get, and like it when you give thoughts based on the regions. Big fan of Bast as a settling place just for the challenge - big fan of here at this point just for the knowledge. New dudes and pros alike should seek this to at least fortify their knowledge or at least get another brain. Good stuff dude. Love it.
Just binged the series, great stuff and content layout is superb. Got my sub, anyone that still makes content on this "sometimes" underrated game gets one. Cheers and good luck with the channel.
it's wild how i can have 400 hours in this game and not even have seen the survey tool like that yet. just been one man army smuggling hash and getting into shit
May i suggest making a guide on ashlands/ashlands bordering zones? Immense amounts of high-level enemies and being literally IN the most endgame zone should produce curious results...
Currently I have a Bast base set up as a training camp both as my starting base and to train up my force, I have the 5 attack slot mod on. I makes the game so interesting 😊
Sonorous Dark/Ashlands; be prepared with some generators, biofuel machines, roof hydroponics and thick walls. Its not just about survival, but a message to the world of setting home base there.
I have a base in Bast. And it is perfect for training. Really like it. Build no walls, fight everyone, just perfect👍 It is definitely midgame base location. I've started it with one MA-focused character with 50 stats, who had a base in Borderlands before. And yes, Bast is much funnier for training than south-east
if you want a very similar spread of resources but without the major factions try sinkuun, its very chill besides the occasional cannibal or slave raid. rebel farmer squads will also attack your workers pretty often but theyre weak so its really just free xp, theyll probably grow to hate you very quickly but it doesnt change much
love to see what cities you think have the best buildings to buy... you could do it like one of those renervation shows... could even do a part as to the best foods/restaurants in the cities/towns... kind of like a travel show... it'd be funny and give you time to look for other locations for base building....
To my unfortunate, this was one of the first place where i attempt to build a base. The things that you mention where factions fighting each other made me think that it would been nice to live there cause i got free security!!!! (i was only 14 hours in to the game) given that my squad mates where very low level. What i didn’t know is that UC do tax week and one of the paladins army send an attack to m my base. Legit i had to literally abandon my base and carried my comrades in arms giving that they where maimed and injured really bad. This was one of the memorables kenshi experience i had playing when i was a noobie 😅

can you make a video on the great desert sometime? idk how good it is for setting up a base but ive been living in Stoat for most of my most successful playthrough, just selling copper and animal teeth from skimmers. got 6 people so far!!
I had a playthrough that lived out of Stoat for a while! I can offer some suggestions: If you go Northwest, Sinkuun is a great early base location. You can live near a Western Hive village for protection. For training, there are rebel farmers up there too. If you play it safe, you could even keep some characters in Stoat working the ore veins and then train near the Western Hive up North.
Iron trail and beserker country when? Iron trail is decent fun btw, settled on the small island between the continent and ancient lab. Very defensible as you can just shoot whoever swims over to you. Traders just swim to you around the threats, and the iron spiders provide a rather sturdy bit of natural defense as they just pulp most small-mid raids. If any show.

For the early+ game - to prepare for the mid/mid+ game regions. Seems easier than Cannibal Plains/Fog Islands/Gap/Bonefields
If you have hydroponics, anywhere with iron/copper is viable so I'd say pick based on points of interest. Shem for well rounded location in the center Stobe regions for being close to the hardest factions If you're feeling confident, you could even settle somewhere like Arach, Sonorous Dark, or Royal Valley as a flex.
As a Flotsam Ninja residing in the Hidden Forest with The Holy Sword start, I use Bast as a training ground for my ranged units. I heal the UC units to gain favor and use it as an opportunity to shoot as many Holy Nation scums as I can. As long as you can out-run them, that is.
I friggin' love Bast, but I don't think it's a great location to settle at. The lack of animals makes food security difficult, and the constant taxes will bleed ya' dry. Not to mention the risk of losing people to cannibals or from combat. That said, it's an amazing place to visit. Some of my most memorable moments come from getting into trouble for trying to help an allied faction, fighting desperately to survive that battle. It also has a few villages that make for good resting locations between engagements.

What about Darkfinger region?
Similar to the Cannibal Plains, but easier and with benefits, no?
100% Fertility (vs. 75% CP)
100% Copper (vs. 55% CP)
120% Stone (vs. 70% CP)
150% Iron (vs. 50% CP)
100% Ground Water (vs. 60% CP)
Same wind (and rain, but with its groundwater - rain doesn't matter)
Also the same acid rain percentage, but who cares about 0.2-0.3%?
As for cannibal mobs spawning - similar to CP, but a bit easier:
20% chance of 5-24 cannibals (vs. 30% CP)
20% chance of 10-35 scrawny cannibals (vs. 15% CP)
+3 cannibal villages/outposts
Only two things compared to CP can be considered (arguably) as disadvantage:
1. 100% Arid + 50% Green (vs. 50% Arid + 100% Green)
2. No Beak Things and their nests.
(and lack of big cities nearby - not counting World's End - but it is the same for CP too).
But in return you get Bast (for "trainings"/loot) in close proximity.
As well as Sinkuun with its hive village and nomad/guild caravans.
And I don't think the lower "Green fertility" is a "problem", actually
- because of Darkfinger's higher common soil Fertility.
(It is actually: 100% Arid + 50% Green VS. 37% Arid + 75% Green)
And even though there are no "Beak Things resources"
- there are still Goats and River Raptors here:
3 beak things (30-40 lvl. skills) = 18 skins, 15 meat, 36 foul meat?
9-12 river raptors (10 lvl skills) = ~10 skins, up to 40-50 foul meat.
9-12 goats (10 lvl skills) = around 20+ skins! up to 60-80 meat!
(They are also slow, so they are much better targets for hunting.
Especially for a group of relatively low-level characters)
Moreover: No taxes and almost no raids (except Cannibals only).
And yes - there are A LOT of flat areas with enough mountain walls.
And some very beautiful scenery in places.
So, it looks like a pretty nice place for your very autonomic base.
For the early+ game - to prepare for the mid/mid+ game regions.
Seems easier than Cannibal Plains/Fog Islands/Gap/Bonefields
Could you also do total warhammer?
What is the best area for end game base to be at?
If you have hydroponics, anywhere with iron/copper is viable so I'd say pick based on points of interest.

Stobe regions for being close to the hardest factions
If you're feeling confident, you could even settle somewhere like Arach, Sonorous Dark, or Royal Valley as a flex.

Selfish Request, can you do one of the regions that spawn Lost Drones that isn’t Vain? For us Hiver Only players at war with the West Hive 👉👈

Facts
As a Flotsam Ninja residing in the Hidden Forest with The Holy Sword start, I use Bast as a training ground for my ranged units. I heal the UC units to gain favor and use it as an opportunity to shoot as many Holy Nation scums as I can. As long as you can out-run them, that is.
None of my characters in Bast had a speed boost from a prosthetic leg, but oh man that would have helped A LOT.
I hope the making of this had something to do with my joke about settling bast!
