The other day at Animecon the artist behind the characters said and i quote: "We aim to have 8 playable characters upon release" Should answer your questions.
@NeoKurow First of all, props for the avatar. Hard Corps: Uprising is amazing! :D The original 8, I believe, are the eight characters shown in this clip -- the first characters shown (although the later 6 very briefly, I think). They will definitely be playable. There were some other character illustrations, but as I said above, it's unclear if they'll actually be playable.
Yup, they had definitely worked on the characters before deciding not to include them -- at least enough to create multiple special moves and animations for them. Let's keep our fingers crossed, maybe they'll figure something out and give us Umbrella and Squigly as DLC!
@GatlingSmash keep in mind, This is an Arcade/Indie game. The developers don't have a lot of money floating around, And it already looks insanely impressive. Give it some time.
@GlubAwayNow They won't be playable, at least without DLC. It was confirmed that there'll only be eight playable characters, but DLC is being thought of.
@GatlingSmash Squigly is the only one whose concept was too out there for them to make effectively before launch. They didn't really go into detail about why Umbrella couldn't make it, but I assume it had to do with a shortage of time. Also, Valentine was already announced on Eurogamer and there are tons of screenshots on the net for her already. Just an FYI for those who don't know. She'll probably be shown on the SoCal regionals or shortly before(google SoCal regionals).
According to what has been posted at SRK, Painwheel's moves have super armor, and any damage she takes during duper armor goes to the overall damage of her move.
@remenberthepretender Yes, this was announced a while back. Squigly and Umbrella were cut due to the developers' lack of time, so we might not see them in the game before there's DLC. According to the developers, the two characters in question were too difficult to implement with the developers' current technology, so they're being replaced by Valentine and another character.
Actually all these characters were viewable on the SkullGirls website back before Mike Z joined the project and there was an actual definite release date. They had full profiles with backstories and everything. This was a few years back,t hough.
@LastoftheGeeks Major props for your FrankenFran avatar, love the series! Peacock fits my playstyle the most, as I'm usually one for zoning and gimmicks. The other character type I like is the exact opposite, raw power, which Cerebella perfectly represents. Squigly could be really interesting. I wonder if here skeletal snake makes for ranged attacks?
@atmmachine11 And when you take into account that you can go up to 3 characters in a team, there might not be that much depth or variety in the end. I still have faith that they will make this game very interesting and fun to play -- most probably tournament viable as well. Hopefully we get those DLC characters!
Squigly and Umbrella have been moved to early dlc characters, so Valentine and the maid chick (marie?) can be part of the eight characters at launch. That and they just don't have the time or funds to finish Squigly and Umbrella. So the eight characters at launch will be Filia, Cerebella, Peacock, Parasoul, Ms. Fortune, Painwheel, Valentine, and the maid chick (Marie?)
And now I just saw Painwheel in action on Shoryuken. Also very different from what I expected, but at the same time she still keeps the same basic premise. I'll let you all see for yourself.
@DubCTales There's supposed to be video demonstrating Parasoul next, which I am excited about. Sadly, I've seen nothing yet on it. I wonder if she's going to be the assassin type or one of those types that call in minions, since she is in charge of a group called the Black Egrets. Then again, I won't be surprised if she's like Rolento in Street Fighter, in which the Black Egrets do nothing except during an overdrive attack.
Yeah, Doogles is correct. At this point, those of us who remember the original 8 are just wondering if all 8 will still be on the initial roster. Though Parasoul is a given considering they feature her in some artwork on the game's related sites.
@Grimmomega That depends. I don't think it's been established on whether the Skull Girl can live without the Skull Heart once it's turned someone into a Skull Girl or not. For all we know, Bloody Marie is a previous Skull Girl that had the Skull Heart, lost it, and now wants it back. (Kinda like Gollum w/ the One Ring) That's my theory until they officially reveal her.
@OhRishtopher - Miss Fortune just got revealed on the playstation blog, and she looks different than she does here. Maybe Alex Ahad found out about this and revised the rest of the characters...check out the fighters generation website for more info.
hey ms.fortune's official game design was just released on they're facebook page if u check the deviant art page of the alex ahad the creative director for the game (oh8) and check his sg gallery you'll find other characters like annie, a eyepatched sword wielding blue haired little girl with a rabbid (not to confussed with rabbids) bunny, Valentine a ninja nurse, venus a girl with the parasite ab-ddon coming from out from her side, and d.violet a teacher looking character
@MegaDoogles @DubCTales I see, thanks for the info! I might keep this video up until E3 though. It's weird there hasn't been any talk about these characters.. They're not listed in game wikias such as GiantBomb or TFG either, so I honestly thought they hadn't been revealed.
@RiotEXE Thanks for the heads up man! Just checked her out but honestly, I like this design a lot more... Not a fan of the tons of fanservice (ironically lol) on the new model. Well, I guess I can look forward to seeing how the other characters have changed. That should be interesting.
Well, I just saw Ms. Fortune on the playstation blog. For one, her design was almost completely revamped, and it seems that this new design comes with some perks. I won't ruin the surprise, but I also so the profile on the skullgirls website. Go check it out!
@Ichizuharu Same here. The moment I heard Michiru Yamane's doing the music, my hype for this game and hearing the full soundtrack multiplied. Of course, many other things about the game are worthy of major hype as well (Peacock's references are great)!
I'm glad that they added Valentine because I like her design. Umbrella was probably just too similar to Parasoul in gameplay and they decided to leave her for later release. So far I like Painwheel since the begining and Valetine for my team but I will wait for the "Super" version of this game before to buy it :P
Ok...the newest character caught me off guard. It's Valentine. I honestly thought she would be one of those DLC characters that they've casually mentioned here or there. She first shows up on a Valentine's Day deviation on Alex Ahad's deviant art. Go check the skullgirls site.
@DubCTales Way different from what I was expecting. Considering that description, I can imagine how her play style would be. Napalm balls that can be controlled and detonated, playstyle akin to Guilty Gear's Venom, and six attack buttons to use instead of four, I may have fun.
Parasoul and then Umbrella? Then Filia and Cerebella? I can see someone rivalry going in the game. They are probably planning on putting that into the game's storyline. I like the artwork. They should turn this into a cartoon series one day! I can definitely see a bright future for this game series!
@lishakara Hell I wouldn't be surprised if some of those character sketches at Alex Ahad's website are planned to be playable. I seem to recall there was a male character named Leduc who was posing with Painwheel. Wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't the first male character they thought of. Unless that's fanart of a character from an existing game that I've never heard of until now. (I already made that mistake once with an image of Aegis over there)
Funny enough the developers said that they got each of the ideas for the character play styles based on drawings that had nothin to do with fighting games (i.e filia goin to thhe store and cerebella in a on monkey bars or sumthin like that)
@atmmachine11 Yep, it's from the game, as I mentioned in the "credits". As for more characters, these are supposedly all that will be available at release, but there have been rumors of DLC characters going around!
@GatlingSmash I'm not sure if we are going to get more characters to be honest. Mike Z said in the destrutoid interview that we are going to have less than 10 characters but more than 5. If we get more characters they are going to be probably 2 bosses or mistresses xD. Who are the original 8 characters that everyone are talking about? Any pictures of videos of those characters?
@lishakara Well I'd say at least some characters like Venus and that pirate zombie chick are more likely to be DLC since they at least have some attacks drawn out but I'll still keep that mind. Thanks for the advice though.
@lishakara Panzerfaust? I thought his name was Tank Punch. Guess that was a working name. Anyway, out of curiosity, mind telling me where you got this info?
@mellygurlX3 1) Obviously there will be more playable characters. A fighting game with this few characters would severely lack depth. 2) While there were other character illustrations, whether or not those characters will be playable remains a mystery (story/boss characters). That is why I didn't include those ones in this video, but provided a link and info in the description.
@OhRishtopher I think Painwheel's the coolest design, but I'll probably end up playing Peacock (the design is so retro it's fresh!) and Cerebella. M Fortune gives me the feeling she'll play a bit like Felicia. Just a hunch.
@806klyzgaming You're welcome. I tend to be informative like that anyways, especially since I'm a huge fan of fighting games since playing Karate Champ in the arcades.
@GatlingSmash Pretty easy mistake to make. They're not really being quiet about the characters or nothing, just not really saying anything about them either. Like I asked on the blog about whether Parasoul and Umbrella would play similarly and they weren't all like "Who's Umbrella? ;P " I guess they're just playing to the fact that most people aren't aware of these other characters
@Ansem665 Similar powers? What? They are nothing alike. The only similarities are the name and the fact that she uses a symbiotic parasite that kinda looks like hair to fight. But her moves and personality and the fact that Samson is an a character too make totally unique.
@GatlingSmash I believe that Squiggly will play like Dalsime just a thought. As for my though for Parasol she already is in the build with a poking / trap style. I have a big bet that Miss Fortune will be a Chip Zaniff player and also I recall their is another girl with a split torso type of thing so I can see someone with a fighting style like Carl Clover. The only one I have no idea would work would be Umbrella she might me a trap charicter or could be something like Bridget or something
@laughingfurry Actually today, Mike Z was on the Team Sp00ky stream at East Coast Throwdown talking about the game and he mentioned that Parasoul would be a trapping, pokey type; somewhat like Venom from Guilty Gear. And he mentions her umbrella shooting out Napalm balls that you can control & detonate. Now I really wanna see her on action :)

They show up in one of Double's supers. I know you're talking about more than that, but at least it shows that the characters aren't forgotten.
Yup, they had definitely worked on the characters before deciding not to include them -- at least enough to create multiple special moves and animations for them. Let's keep our fingers crossed, maybe they'll figure something out and give us Umbrella and Squigly as DLC!
Watching in 2022 wow
@GatlingSmash keep in mind, This is an Arcade/Indie game. The developers don't have a lot of money floating around, And it already looks insanely impressive. Give it some time.
Venus Lovelace 4 DLC! :)
Awesome find, thanks for sharing!!
@GlubAwayNow
They won't be playable, at least without DLC. It was confirmed that there'll only be eight playable characters, but DLC is being thought of.

I just bought this game and I love it, can't wait for DLC. This is one of the only games where I will buy any character they release.
@remenberthepretender
Yes, this was announced a while back. Squigly and Umbrella were cut due to the developers' lack of time, so we might not see them in the game before there's DLC. According to the developers, the two characters in question were too difficult to implement with the developers' current technology, so they're being replaced by Valentine and another character.
@NeoKurow
Same. Painwheel is supposed to feel little to no pain, so I'm hoping that translates to counterattacks or powering armor moves in game.
Actually all these characters were viewable on the SkullGirls website back before Mike Z joined the project and there was an actual definite release date.
They had full profiles with backstories and everything. This was a few years back,t hough.

Squigly could be really interesting. I wonder if here skeletal snake makes for ranged attacks?
I think Umbrella might be too similar to Parasoul...Squigly looks cool though, very Nightmare Before Christmas-y.
@ggxxslash Umbrella was mentioned in the story at the SG site and Painwheel was in sketches at reverlabs site. So yeah, they pretty much real.
@stringsin
It's from the game's OST! "New Meridian" by Michiru Yamane, the only released track from the game so far I believe.
@atmmachine11
And when you take into account that you can go up to 3 characters in a team, there might not be that much depth or variety in the end. I still have faith that they will make this game very interesting and fun to play -- most probably tournament viable as well. Hopefully we get those DLC characters!

I'll let you all see for yourself.
they should have more characters and this should be in a disc because this game is brutal !!
@GatlingSmash Umbrella and squigly are already confirmed as the first DLC and double turns into them in its level 3
@DubCTales
There's supposed to be video demonstrating Parasoul next, which I am excited about. Sadly, I've seen nothing yet on it. I wonder if she's going to be the assassin type or one of those types that call in minions, since she is in charge of a group called the Black Egrets. Hasn't Umbrella and Squidly been cut from the roster? They've been announced as early DLC I believe.

I love peacock's 1930's cartoon vibe with her cartoony violence
Parasoul looks pretty rad.
@GatlingSmash
Isn't valentine going to be playable because of them replacing squigly and umbrella?
Bloody marie might also be the other character?
hey ms.fortune's official game design was just released on they're facebook page if u check the deviant art page of the alex ahad the creative director for the game (oh8) and check his sg gallery you'll find other characters like annie, a eyepatched sword wielding blue haired little girl with a rabbid (not to confussed with rabbids) bunny, Valentine a ninja nurse, venus a girl with the parasite ab-ddon coming from out from her side, and d.violet a teacher looking character

@GatlingSmash I have news. The developers are thinking in putting valentine from the start and not as a DLC. I don't know why.
I'm buying the game and soundtrack on launch. Too damn good.
@fpsisfun
What made you think it wasn't? All sources have supported this video since very early on.
Painwheel looks sick. Definitely playing as her.
@Hanayoru
and parasoul is definetely gonna be in it. They had this little thing on her on the site
note that this might only be concept art
I will get this game too... Mike Z and his team are doing a great job!...
Painwheel looks awesome :P...
@Awes731 These pieces of art are years old, valentine was made after ms. Fortune changed design mid last year
You can find the artist in Deviantart.
Ok...the newest character caught me off guard. It's Valentine. I honestly thought she would be one of those DLC characters that they've casually mentioned here or there. She first shows up on a Valentine's Day deviation on Alex Ahad's deviant art.
Go check the skullgirls site.
Filia has a Millia rage/Cammy swagga in Lucy Van Pelt's head
There are 5 more characters they're going to release... and there are 6 characters in this video.

and Painwheel are going to run this game
@lishakara Well I'd say at least some characters like Venus and that pirate zombie chick are more likely to be DLC since they at least have some attacks drawn out but I'll still keep that mind. Thanks for the advice though.
@GatlingSmash
Michiru Yamane?
THE! Michiru Yamane?
The one from SOTN?
HOLY MOSES ON A WHEEL CHAIR.
@lishakara Panzerfaust? I thought his name was Tank Punch. Guess that was a working name. Anyway, out of curiosity, mind telling me where you got this info?

painwheel looks so brutal
PAINWHEEL HAS BEEN REVEALED!!! They changed very little, though, which is good, unlike Ms. Fortune, who went through A LOT of changes.
@Ichizuharu
Oh man, I'm so jealous you got to attend EVO, haha. :P Hoping to be able to do so myself next year.
@unityd3v That sounds awesome. I wonder how it will work out though.
@yaay0
I giggled like a girl.
It's not her hand though, it's the skeleton snake thingie's rear end. Her hands are hidden inside her sleeves. :P
PAINWHEEL oh god that's so cool. Personally I prefer the alt-color for Filia htat was shown in some playtests, but this is so COOOOOL.
I'm going to take Painwheel and Squigly into tag mode.
@GatlingSmash I believe that Squiggly will play like Dalsime just a thought. As for my though for Parasol she already is in the build with a poking / trap style. If they ever make a cross over with Blazblue I'd like to see a Taokaka vs Squigly match :D
@Ilovemariofan
She actually has a Cirno color palette!
M. Fortune better be rushdown.
@zphilosphyAlex073088 parasoul little sister and their unbrlla are connected in a way from the story i suppose, so yeah
o crap....Painwheel looks sick
@Kodocha7
Shes only 13, why is she armless D:
@Bleachlover01
Saw it, she's looking really polished! Now to wait for gameplay videos...
@blackandblue85
Where did yousee this?
I looked and couldnt find anything.
@catboyrandl
The only things i see look a like are Parasoul and umbrella.
Both have umbrella related names and have umbrellas with eyes :|
Peacock is awesome. She reminds me of Faust and Yukari+Flandre.
@nianicole824 They are. Before the official site took all the character art and backstory down that was part of it.
So, are M Fortune, Umbrella, Painwheel and Squigly actually real?
Painwheel reminds me abit of an undead-version of Tsubaki from Soul Eater lol :P
(ironicly she can also change into a big throwing star)
Excuse me, but wasn't there supposed to be a ninja doctor named "Valentine"?
man whats the name of that song!! god damn is it good
@Grimmomega
That's the spirit!
They really changed Ms. Fortune's art design.
We need a genie
