Windows is incapable of sharing reliably out of the box. Many years ago I used, I think it was called "Home Network" or similar. Sometimes it worked, most of the time it didn't. I tried this method about 4-5 years ago as it was being touted as THE way to share on Windows. Setting up was never straightforward as what you found was never the same as instructions. When it was complete it did work but it screwed up other things, it may have been the internet connection, so I had to change the settings afterwards to get that back again afterwards. Nowadays if I want to share I use a memory stick. Works every time, very quick, very easy and it doesn't screw anything else up.
I've always found that Microsoft's network and sharing settings were a jumbled mess. If I want to share files on a regular basis, I set up Syncthing (free) on all computers involved. The files will show up on the other computers within seconds of them being created or copied to the source folder. The sharing can be bi-directional or one direction. And this works whether your computers are on the same network or on opposite sides of the world. If you don't have a NAS or something similar, most routers have the ability to use a USB stick installed externally for sharing files just like a NAS.
They can be a bit flakey
They haven't copied everything from Control Panel to the Settings app
Agree. At times it's a pain in the butt.
I had to go through additional security options to share an entire Drive as opposed to individual folders; add Everyone and change permissions to read/write, etc...Windows is so clunky. Exposes the root of the drive i suppose, etc. yaddah yaddah, w/e.
I also had to enable/install SMB protocols in windows additional features (not so sure if these are enabled by default on current installs of W11).
Maybe a good video addition? Those steps could prove a bit more perplexing to the uninitiated.
Always appreciate your straightforward style, sir. Had to watch out of curiosity. Thank you.
Thank you Brian, this is a great video on how to share files.🤩
Glad it was helpful!
Everything you do is top draw buddy, above n beyond, please do a vid on how you actuallt do your vids, how you do the screen and talk is awsome, that would ve gud to learn too, have a nice evening vri, cheers, carlos😉👍
Thanks for the idea!
Thank you so much for the great videos, my question is, am I able to do this between Win 10 on one computer and Win 11 on the other? Both are connected via cable's regards j
Yes you can
should work w/ any PC that can run SMB 1.0, even XP, etc. could be used as a NAS I believe. I think that is why Microsoft wants to truncate the SMB protocol: security and well they need new $.
Video IDEA:
How about a video on How to Connect two (of more) routers together, for the purpose of SECURITY, (NOT wifi extension) ?
Using the WAN (not LAN) port on the secondary or tertiary routers.
To my understanding LAN to LAN just turns all non-primary routers into switches.
This would be very helpful in creating secure and unsecured zones, for computers vs. IOT devices, etc.
Trying to connect two laptops via wifi, both on local accounts. Works on one (1), the other (2) says: _sign in to your local account to continue using nearby sharing._
So I was able to copy a file from 1 to 2 in spite of the fact that 2 wants me to be signed in, but no luck from 2 to 1.
I'm planning on purchasing a new computer to replace/backup my current one. I dread the moving of files, emails, programs, and photos from my 9yo Windows10 laptop over to the new one, because of my limited knowledge on how to do this properly. Any suggested videos or websites on how this can be done fairly straightforwardly, without causing me too much distress?
Clone your drive
Great video! I would like to create a shared folder on my windows VM which would be accessible from my physical Linux device. I followed the steps for computer 1, but I can't find the Windows machine on Dolphin. My VM network card is configured for a bridge access and pinging it from my Linux machine works. Where am I going wrong here?
Have you set the network adaptor on VM to bridged?
@@Britec09Indeed I have
*eyes their NAS*
It makes live soo much easier putting the file sharing job on a box hooked up to the internet.
Hello sir great video as usual . Hope you can help me with this question. I want to transfer 1 tb of files to my other computer in different country via FTP protocol but failed. The technician said reason it failed because the router on other side has 2 ip addresses need to bridge or ask the company to remove 1 ip to be able to use ftp file zilla . Before I contact the internet company I want ask you if this information is accurate. Thank you Sir
Buy a cheap 1TB drive and post it to other address or create a cloud account on one drive ot google.
@Britec09 oh ok thank you kind sir
Please note when have file sharing turned on, it will prevent the PC from going to sleep
I never use sleep or hibernation
yes and no, win11 pro can be woken up from sleep from remote access, but win11 home cannot.
i am still using Windows 10 - cant find your deviceplaces
You can do it on windows 10
right click on the folder you want to share click on 'give access to' (classic r-click menu or addl actions), It should basically walk you through it. The Control panel is the same on both versions of windows.
Fine in theory but I can only make it work one-way between two Win10 PCs. PC1 can see a shared drive on PC2 but not vice versa. It’s usable, but should really be easier. I’ve tried everything (I think) over several years and the settings and steps in this video are very familiar. Only thing is, what is SMB and how do I install / enable it (if it is necessary)?
@@chromatic-me SMB is simply a file sharing protocol.
type in windows search: 'Turn windows features on or off'
check all the boxes with SMB are ticked and save, restart.
You may need to to go to properties of drive or file you are wanting to share on the misbehaving PC by Rclick on it, click security, add permissions for 'Everyone', add read, write if desired.
Just some suggestions of course.
It's not the smoothest process unfortunately.
@@chromatic-me something is deleting my comments, sorry mate.
SMB is a file sharing protocol
it can be checked in turn windows features on or off
Check the properties on the drive on PC2
goto security
add appropriate permissions.
or youtube is just being youtooby...IDK...doh!
Video Idea: installation of Graphene OS on any pixel phone.
make a video on wireguard vpn setup process.
See what I can do
Hi, I would like help with a Google account, but actually I had one Google account from Gmail and I can't get there, the phone number I had no longer exists and I also don't remember the security questions I had there, it was about 5 years ago I'm out and you need the documents that I had there, also a photo of my children when they were still small, but I just lost everything and I'm trying and trying and it just doesn't work! Could you please help me with this?if you can Thank you
google just removed any account you have not used in the last 8 months, it was pretty well known that they were going to do this
@@debeeriz 8 months? It's 2 years in the UK
@@SleepingSavage you are right, l dont know where i saw that 8 months, probably 8 months ago i got the email
Make a video about how to set up VPN connection to the home pc from far away on the internet.
Microsoft's method is unreliable (what a shocker). I gave up and use Laplink for windows 7 ( yes, it's w10/w11 compatible). Old ways still work!
