  • My talk will discuss the scope and impact of poverty in families in rural America and how their struggles can often go unseen by the national eye. It will cover some of the unique challenges of growing up poor in a community lacking basic resources like grocery stores or hospitals, and how the American narration of picking yourself up by your bootstraps, doesn't work so well for people born without the metaphorical "boots" in the first place.
Crystal is from Winchester, New Hampshire and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Smith College. She is currently the admissions coordinator at Kum Hattin Homes for Children in Westminster, Vermont. Crystal is passionate about economic inequality and access to education. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

As someone from a “third world country” I understand and agree with you so much... on so many levels. May you have more opportunities to speak about this and may you be heard. ❤️
