Thank you. Many of the comments have been excellent because they are constructive; showing up the errors in this video. I do appreciate that. I especially like it when comments are made specifically to make the situation of having heat a more efficient prospect. Again, Thanks.
In 2004, we had a big icestorm in Québec, Canada. We didn't have any electricity for a MONTH. And yes, i was able to heat my living room and kitchen at 18celcius with one burner like this one and a Spring alccol burner from Switzerland ( it is made for restaurant) and use to make flamed coffee or fine trout filet. It is a cooking stove made by Spring. During that infamous month, we had some minus 20C. The artisanal burner was made with insulation wool as a wick. So, i was able to cook on my stove and getting a lot of heat from both burners. I had a window open a bit for air intake. No odor. Yes it work, i had tested it for one miserable month. exterior temp at minus 20C getting to 18C for 2 rooms. I was using around 1 gallon of methyl by 24 hours. Important note: Here in Québec, we have well insulated house. Last week we had a couple of days at minus 36Celcius. I was boiling some water in a 5 gallon big canning pot for a bath mixed with some room temp water in the bathtub. The powerline tower were falling, 1-2 feet of ice in the street, trees and branches in the street, hospital running on generators, gas station not open, groceries out of stock or closed, a lot of houses fire, no more dry wood, no more generator anywhere we have to import from USA, no more candles, no batteries, emergency was full of injured peoples, the army were installing all their generator in school against frozen pipes, all schools were closed, everything was closed. I had to make 200 kilometers to find some open city to buy some foods and methyl. Water was always running a bit to prevent freezing. A real nightmare. They made a movie with it ICESTORM. After 1 month, i was under depression, my son too and my cat was barking, poor him. I had no income for a month as a sub contractor on small parcels delivery with 3 trucks payments to do, ooch the wallet was flat as a pizza.
I remember that ice storm. I'm here in Ontario and I didn't realize you had no power for a month though. I was under the impression that you had power after two weeks. This makes me more concerned than ever about Montreal banning fireplaces. Thank you for the verification that this works. I don't think people think about the fact that without power the fans on furnaces and gas fireplaces will not run to heat homes.
Was just watching a video about the homeless in Anchorage Alaska and many are dying from the cold or losing limbs. This truly could save a life or an appendage. So many videos with no purpose...Being once homeless myself it gets really cold at night even in the summer in the Midwest, I would have appreciated this very much...TY
This was a well thought out and well executed video. Everyone who lives with winter should really have the sealed version in their vehicle. So simple and you're right-could definitely save a life (or a limb!)
Melt wax and run cardboard through it...roll the cardboard and place into a can. Light it like a candle. Learned that 60 years ago in boy scouts. It works!
I am pleased to read all these ideas. I have been wondering how to stay warm in an emergency as I live in an apartment and everything is electric. There is much land around these units tho so in a pinch if I had to be outside in a tent for no power then I would use hot rocks in a pit inside the tent and of course my -20 sleep bag. I am also next to a river. I am still not sure about how to heat my small apt. tho. I will keep looking for answer.
I found this video very helpful. I love the idea of using the rocks as a control for the flame and I would imagine they also retain and give off heat when they become hot. Thanks again.
There is a video by a survival expert that made a winter emergency shelter where he dug a pit over which he put up his tent. He then heated large rocks outside the tent over a fire and brought them in the tent and put them in the pit. He said it kept his tent at 70 degrees all night - with no fume or CO2 problems. I bought a fire pit and lava rocks so I could do the same thing at my house in case the power is out for an extended period.
I think you mean CO (carbon dioxide) - not CO2 (carbon monoxide). Big Difference. CO2 is pumped into greenhouses to make plants grow and people work in that environment for years with no harmful effects. CO2 is also used in Sodas and for food storage. This is why most "deniers" say that man made climate change is a lie. The small amount of CO2 that man adds to the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels is less than .12% of the total green house gases in our atmosphere - very hard to even measure let alone prove that man made CO2 is the cause of Cli.Chg.
Hey great idea..can you link the video you are describing? We bought sample pieces of soapstone from a counter place in Virginia-box of 6 for 25$-not cheap but nice...would you say lava rocks get hotter? Put soapstone into cookie tins and keep small spaces under sleeping bags warm.
Thank you for the video! I will definitely try this at my home. I also enjoyed your music choice, so refreshing from the usual garbage that gets blasted.
You that's a GREAT idea for stealth camping - everything is contained, portable AND reusable - curious about smoke tho - I'm trying it out anyway - thank you
Before I watched your video, I already knew the toilet-paper-in-a-can trick (using 70° alcohol). But your idea to use rocks on top is indeed brillant! A tiny home-heater without the electricity bill, that's a wonderful trick for everyone! Thank you for sharing!
Dear Microdac, Sir, great video. Clear, concise, low soft music background ,(NOT grungy and loud!) excellent pace. Thanks for the information Mate. pierre from New Mexico
You seem like a sweet well just intentioned man. I read some rude mean comments left here and felt they were uncalled for and they shouldn't have replied at all!
rudeness has really done a number on me I do not like rude people I dislike rude people it's hard to be a good person when you around rude people it ends up rubbing off on you and then nobody wants to be around you anymore haha
I like how you did this sir its very important also keep food and water always in the trunk and blankets and sleeping bags always it can save your life good job this is the good side of the internet
I know I just commented I just wanted to make sure that i emphasized that the video was great and you did a wonderful job explaining from start to finish what we would need and walking us through how to put it together. This is an awesome video and great advice for those of us that love to learn. Thank you for taking the time to teach us.

HI WILLIAM MCGOWAN HERE... WELL SIR YOURS IS THE BEST ONE YET.. in deeed you can keep one in your van . place THE qrt CAN in a gal paint can on a pie pan, TO keep the carpet from igniting and heat your space should you get stuck on a white out or wreck if the highway is blocked..[god forbid].. indeed sir I am going to make one .... and the rock idea is sound.. and it will hold the heat as well... I LIKE IT.... THANK YOU SIR.. GOD BLESS YOU THIS WINTER... William McGowan now living in Omaha NE,, transplanted from riverside cal..
I think it was a great video. He was just coving all the bases.some people are just stupid, he still has people saying he would die even after he said he had ventilation. Those people deserve what they get. Great video sir. Cheers ; your a survivor thanks for sharing
Sir, YOU made my day. This video is NOT the absolute answer to all questions and query, what I had hoped for was to make a video as a starting point for others to investigate and come to their own conclusions. We live in the age of the Internet; ALL the answers, for the first time in history, are right at our fingertips. Thank you for your kind words.
Tape a quarter on top of that paint can. Use it to open the can when you want to use it. Convenient and no need to hunt for a screwdriver to open the can.
I appreciate the music also the simple method of staying warm enough to not die. Thank you n your presentation. Nice to know smart men n the humility you portray. Should be more men like yourself.
Staying warm is vital - what a great tool, in an emergency! If you can find even a smallish feather/down blanket to sleep under, it's perfect all year around. I googled 'microfiber/down blankets' and found one that's about 5' by 6' for around $20 US, lightweight but toasty in winter topped by a blanket, and perfect most of the summer. In Ireland and England, where central heating is rare, everyone had their own hot water bottle, which was filled from the boiled tea kettle, then placed by one's feet in the bed. Getting to sleep in a cold room was quite comfortable then, although the water would be cold by morning. Kohl's department stores used to put lovely feather blankets on sale during the winter, but the microfiber is really soft and sturdy. Stay warm! Blessings.
we did this last winter. our cabin has a wood stove that is perhaps a little over sized for the space. we built two of these and when the temperature outside was 30, we managed to keep the main room at 60, I highly recommend ventilation and a fan set at low to keep the heat from staying in the top of the room. you probably should only use this in an emergency. the clay pot is a great idea. probably helps radiate the heat more evenly. thank you for the great idea.
@@rudiwatson-uk8508 If there is power for a fan one doesn't likely need the emergency heat source. I know that there are actually "heat propelled" fans for the top of wood stoves. Not sure how i might be used w/ the can stove.
You could flip that flower pot upside down over top of the can, lifting it off the ground with a few small items for airflow. The fire will heat the ceramic up and heat the room quicker
Use the base of the flower pot, turn it upside down to put over your heater, usually they already have a hole in it and are found in terracotta in every hardware store.
That is brilliant. Always good to be prepared. Took notes to be ready ...THANK YOU SO MUCH. And you have a very relaxing voice. Could listen for hours. Thanx. ❤️
Thank you. Very detailed and you emphasized the important steps such as not to use plastic lids, and regulating the rocks depending on the intensity of the flames. I am sure the heater would come in very handy in an emergency situation.
Hello Paulette, you should re-read the title of this video. "MUST HAVE VENTILATION!" Carbon monoxide HAZARD. This little stove can not be used in a car or in a room. Fireplaces and wood stoves have chimneys or stove pipes to direct deadly fumes out of the house. This little toilet paper stove or any open flame would require that you open the doors and windows! If you really want to prepare for a power outage install a wood stove which is safe and can also be used to cook meals.
I don't understand all of the uppity remarks about a great idea for in a pinch & you could not afford anything otherwise, then you would be grateful to just have this on hand. Besides I think a lot of people are just missing the big point, put the lid on & douse the flame & bring it into your living quarters until it cools down & repeat, sure beats freezing to death. It may not be the most efficient way of staying warm, but as I stated, in a pinch you'd be praying to God that you wished just to have those items on hand for emergencies. So thank you for the great advise & video, also I love that song as well.
When I was in the military I spent many cold nights standing in the dirty exhaust fumes of a diesel generator trying to keep warm. When you are trapped in the middle of nowhere with nothing but what you are wearing you appreciate any heat you can get. I would have loved to had your heater when I had nothing to keep warm. Your heater gets a high five from an Army veteran. I hope everyone preps for a cold weather emergency. Thanks for sharing.
Military should get you Mylar blankets....really cheap!!! They reflect 90% of your body heat back to you....they look like a sheet of aluminum foil, but really work!!
Good work by you...effective and well intentioned too. Disregard any negative comments my friend...these people don't like themselves...and again...very many thanks to you.
Microdac - Your video is like a public service announcement which can save someone's life . Folks who are SAR / search and rescue keep these heaters in snowmobiles , automobiles and backpacks . Getting an individuals core temperature up with hot soup or coffee is a life saver . I have done some experimenting using a carbon monoxide detector 3 feet away from these heaters = No Alarm . IMO , these heaters can be used safely within the confines of a tent or automobile if there is a source of fresh air and a stable base to sit the heater on . I use 1/4" thick plywood wrapped in aluminum foil and use foil with holes punched in it over the toilet paper . Your idea of using rocks seems viable and interesting . Thanks for a well edited video with life saving data . Happy Holidays Lefty - Western States SAR , San Juan county New Mexico
Master Tracker Excellent and reminds me of a guy snowshoeing in the area of Cotopaxi CO . He didn't leave a travel plan or time of return with the forest service or friends . His sister reported him missing and it took 3 people on sleds to find a few tracks after it started snowing . He was in second stage hypothermia and with a twisted ankle . 20 minutes later , we're getting warm electrolyte mixture and tea in him while splinting his ankle . The guy started to recover fairly quickly and we got him out of there . He wouldn't have lasted another 4 hours . Small alcohol stoves like the Trangia are nifty for small jobs , but when you need lots of heat and need it now , a paint can stove is the only way to go . Put one under dry and green spruce bows and it makes a great signal fire with lots of smoke . Thanks for sending and have a great holiday season . Cosmo -> Utah Canyon Clan SAR .

Great video. I really like the idea of adding rocks as a flame regulator and combining it with the clay pot. I think this was well done and I appreciate your efforts. I know this was made in 2014, but if you read this, thank you. I made one of these in a church function and we added a box of matches and either taped or put a rubber band around it with instructions. Hope you make more videos in the future. :-)
I learned how to help myself in an emergency-- gratitude. Thank you, sir. This knowledge is empowering. Enjoyed the addition of the music as well. Gonna gather the materials and find out if I can make it work. Learning through doing. 😄
Great idea. Looks wonderful. A bigger pot is needed so the van does not tip over. Safety first... Then when you see it from a distance it looks wonderful and the fit is right! It was nice to hear you say ‘I would love to hear your compliments’.
I loved this video! I came mainly for the home-made heater. I stayed, however, for the narrator’s voice and accent. It was so soothing but earthy and a bit mysterious. That classic music playing in the background (or did I imagine it?) went perfectly with the narrator’s voice. With all due respect, Mr. Narrator, you are a sexy gentleman stud! I’m in love with your voice! I want to hear more, please. ❤️🙏🏼
yes, if you use sandstone rocks it will. when I was stationed in Korea where its common for temperatures to hit -40 , I used to put fairly large rocks like softball size in the engine compartment in my tank. then at night I'd take them and put them in my sleeping bag. it kept you warm all night even if you had to relieve yourself in the middle of the night.
Thank you for sharing...I wish I would have known this in 1983...my kids and I almost froze to death in our trailer furnace quit working...Merry Christmas! This is something I will always remember.
Thank you Sir so much. It is golden hearted people like you that will help all of us out here without basic survival skills. Again, Thank you. Friend. God bless you.
Or tape a few strike anywhere matches you have waterproof with paraffin along with the nickel. Paper matches could disappoint in very high humidity or rain.
This post is four years old, so others may have mentioned these additional tips. 1.) Most of those paint cans are now lined with a paint-like material, which you don't want to burn in a closed area. Prior to using it for heating, take it outside and put paper/cardboard/wood in it and set them on fire. Keep them burning until the lining is gone and wiped out of the can...... 2.) The rocks: don't use rocks from a watersource; these rocks absorb a certain amount of moisture, and when heated, they can explode......3.) All open flames need oxygen to burn; all living creatures need oxygen to live. Leave a window cracked opened so you have fresh air coming into your shelter while the fire is burning. When you put the fire out, you can close the window. 4.) It's best not to leave any fire burning while you're sleeping.
Thank you so much this worked fantastic for my upstairs work room that gets its heat from downstairs it really warmed a cold room up& I can work in it comfortably I used the rocks because it got pretty warm thanks again
Watching this during the toilet paper apocalypse, I found myself becoming very still and attentive at the image of a toilet paper roll, an unused and intact toilet paper roll, that I knew was going to be sacrificed. 😲 The dramatic music didn't help😆
That would be so useful! It can get -30 to -40 here in Wyoming with the windchill. This would be perfect to keep in my toolbox for emergencies. The wind can whip right through the vehicle and chill it quickly, if I had to shut the vehicle off in a situation where they shut down the hwy. (Which happens a ton) you become a sitting duck until it reopens. I'd need to conserve fuel because gas stations around here are few and far between. I also went up through the Tetons to pick up a few ponies for my little boy, and all of the hotels were full. I went to 5 different places. I ended up pulling over, truck, trailer with 2 ponies and no blankets or anything to cover up with. I "slept" 3 hours and continued driving back home because it was a tad chilly. Would've been nice to have that! Thanks for the video!
comment from , andrew Hoard 1 month ago (edited) It is not 100 percent necessary to have good ventilation. Isopropyl Alcohol is a simple substance and when burned it produces water h2o and co2. Now an excess of carbon dioxide is not good, but it would be unlikely a bottle of Isopropanol could produce enough to be harmful. C3h8o+o2=co2+h20 simply meaning water and carbon dioxide products from combustion.
Using the rocks as a flame regulator is an ingenious thing to do!! I absolutely love it!!! I wanted to make one of these because we lost power and it’s cold snow and ice but I was scared of how big the flame is on the thing and scared I’d burn down the house. So yes the rock regulator is very very smart!!!

The more I watched your video the MORE I enjoyed it, Also in hearing some of your background music was OUTSTANDING (Because) William Tell Overture happens to be my cell phone Ringtone and I thought I was getting a phone call while watching your video. I have carried this type of heater in both my cars for many years. Thanks again for this great video.
I agree with wearing layers of clothing. My dad and mom were born in the early 1900's and they said they wore hats and wool socks to bed and dressed warm and had lots of cover on their beds since they had no heat at night. We modern folks think we couldn't live without heat, but many generations before us did just fine. Please, please find a safe method of heat to use as we already have way too much dementia today.
Thanks. You are right. I saw a survival film one day that said a large percentage of our body heat is lost through the top of our heads. So on cold nights I tried taking a thick hand towel and simply lying it across my head once I got positioned. I was totally amazed at how soon I was feeling too warm and had to remove it.
This is the way ...I have dealt with cold weather for yrs.....Layers/hats/gloves to bed ! An RV with NO heat......is truly a modern day ....'ice box'............
@@StreetSweeper73 Yep some of us..... still live in that era... NO $$ lol ... : ) Was homeless with two little ones for a month...so I'm happy for lol my ice box : )
Had no heat at night, huh? And why was that? My ancestors were smart enough to put another log on the fire before they went to bed. You gotta be kidding me. Do you think fire is a recent discovery?
I would like to Give You a great big ole bear hug and THANK YOU for such a wonderful video!!! Your background music was very subtle and absolutely perfect! Your speech patterns and volume were very concise, fluid, paced perfectly, volume exceptional and information on point!! There are some trolls and or nay sayers and just plain ole cranky people making rude negative & hateful comments people who have apparently always had and gave all of the facts about every subject they have ever spoken about before or had in print, and have always done so.....via simply opening their mouths to speak on any given subject, and therefore they have always given every relevant fact even when the whole thing is taught adnausium, to bordem. Even though it bleeds over into nausea & certain things are repeatative and universal knowledge, these kinds of people just go right on ahead and repeat it all another 4000 times irregardless of existing knowledges, every word is spoken precisely, never any hesitation, or stop & starts or even a stutter here or there. Their every announciation being on point and completely decernable their rythym & beat never skips, speeds up or slows down for if it did they would surely wither and die, and we all know these very people are to perfect to do any such thing as to make a mistake, or worry about someone trying to sue just because they didn't state the obvious and they feed off of those whom they shun and put down! Please do not listen to these snide, rude and hateful comments no one deserves any of them, especially not you!!!
I appreciate your comments duckling homestead gardens, though this isn't my video at all. I do however love the idea of user comments also being movie reviews...sort of...especially if they are as concise as this one ( I also agree with everything you said). Cool.

Hardware stores and home impovement centers are great places to get new ideas for DIY heaters and those type of things You can also keep your cost very low.
Great ides, but please remember this one fact... using rocks not only helps you to regulate the size of the flame, BUT THE ROCKS ABSORB HEAT, AND CAN AND HAVE BEEN USED AS BED WARMERS FOR A LONG TIME. OF COURSE YOU MUST WRAP THEM UP BEFORE PLACING THEM IN TO YOUR SLEEPING BAG, BLANKET OR BED. JUST SAYING ROCKS ABSORB AND HOLD IN HEAT! WASTE NOT WANT NOT! THANKS FOR THE IDEA 💡! GREAT VIDEO!
Thank you for this video and demonstration and knowledge, I'm like a Tim Allen from Home improvement, this is easy to do. Much appreciation. SHALOM 💖💖💖.
Love that idea First time I saw that but sure won't forget it Awesome I am a older lady with kids who think I am crazy so I am prepping myself for my home
Love the music. I haven’t heard The Willian Tell Overture in many years. This is perfect for your Lone Ranger concept of survival! Great idea that can be easily duplicated!
I tested this idea with both alcohol and fondue fuel. Alcohol gives a strong candle light and some alcohol smell. Fondue fuel gives more heat and barely any light, but doesn't smell at all. Whichever you use, open the window once in a while to change the air in the room.
Got it now. Thank you. 12degrees warmer hours later in a 12x12 non insulated garage is significant in a survival situation. Of course, need fresh air vent to breath, preferably at bottom of walls, catch heat high. Smaller space, warmer. thanks again
This kind of video is so interesting! I’ve been watching videos about tying knots and pickling eggs. I’ve learned so much! And now this! Bravo, sir! What can I move to next?....
One day those in need due to a shut down that mock will be the first to grab toilet paper, rubbing alcohol, a can...and lighter!!! Great idea in a bad situation! Thanks
Used these 35 years ago. Keep us warm in a false gang box made from 4 X 8 foot sheets of plywood. The top and back were nailed to gang boxes on both sides. The front we made inside handles to pull door shut while we set on 2 X 4 benches while we hid between assignments. We just used a empty folgers can and toilet paper. Fired it up and took naps. So Awesome I had to show my son.
As a geologist it would scare the hell out of me 'putting rocks' in a stove without knowing what minerals are in the rock. i.e. It might generate sulphurous or nitrous oxides, or something else. I guess though the flame is burning higher.
@@AndrewSheldon Is it true that they can also explode if they are gathjered from near a water source? I'd have thought bits of dry brick, or even better, fire brick would be a safer bet.
What a fantastic idea, n even if I use a coffee container, I would keep the plastic lid (for storage only) id put the toilet paper on and the rocks and not put the alcohol in until I need it. And the great thing is; alcohol doesn't freeze so it will be fine in my trunk. The 9nly prob is finding the 91% as the drugstores here in NY don't seem to carry it. Thank you for all your excellent vids, have a Blessed n Joyous Christmas.
I think some people missed the point. Warming yourself during extreme emergency situation,, Not heating a 12 X 12 area. heck that temp he showed wasn't that bad. And the Vet's that poked a couple holes in the can and used sand,,Right On!,you won't smother the flame. So T.P, a coffee can, and Alcohol,,sounds like a country song.
I bought tea candles to cook with incase of emergency- each will go a very long time- they r just a little bigger them regular tea candles-Made my hobo thing out of large coffee can will use them-50 in a box- punched holes in 22 oz bean can and will set candle in that can and then into coffee can- figure it will heat water quicker holding more heat in- ALSO USED T-paper tubes- used water soaked card board rolled tightly and inserted into t-paper tubes and let dry- for xtra fuel if needed eventually
nowadays a Mylar blanket is warm as heated bricks...It reflects 90% of your body heat back to you, so your really warm in bed....tape it to your top blanket or it will be too hot!!
My granny heated bricks in the fireplace, but you have to be able to have a fireplace going in the first place.......also,if the temperature only went up 2-3 degress in 2 hours, having the possibility to poisoneveryone ,isnt there any solution to this problem???
Great video, thanks for the useful survival heater idea..out of curiosity, how long will these run before they burn out? You could've also used put the clay pot face down above the heater and that would've helped as well...you can make a little heater with just a couple tea light candles and a clay pot....you can also roll cardboard up tightly into a can and then pour melted candle wax over it and light it on fire for a little survival heater
Excellent! thank you! My shopping list for survival during any upcoming long outage this winter has been updated!!! Isopropyl, paint can, toilet paper and rocks (Who wants a wild flame, anyways!!!) :) :) :) A very happy and safe winter... no matter what!
I know this is a kinda old video but you can get the pint, and even 1 gallon sized, cans [and lids] at any Sherwin Williams, Hallman Lindsey, or other type dedicated paint stores... Price varies of course between the stores... And this is a excellent emergency kit for keeping warm... Say like middle of winter in the middle of nowhere vehicle breakdown with a area you can't get phone reception... Or where the arrival time to assist you will be long...
Taking a huge clay pot & putting it upside down (making sure there's a hole) over the whole thing will magnify the heat. Can also use a can of Crisco (reg.) & put it on a metal oven rack or in a clay pot, secure a tapered candle into the can of Crisco & put a big clay pot upside down over all too to radiate some heat. I like the alcohol idea better though! Thank you!
I am sorry but all those rude comments had me cracking up.. they never and said anything about the rocks.. like platic rocks or something.. those comment had me lmao. but sir you did a great job and I really liked your video
Excellent presentation! Something to think about in a natural disaster or emergency... I'm a camper and love to find out these interesting tidbits of natural survival! THANK U!... Floridafan..:)
I don't even know if you can still buy it or not, but I use to carry a few cans of "Sterno" and a big coffee can half full of sand with me when I drove tractor-trailer cross country. It came in handy on more than one occasion when I (the truck) broke down and I needed a way to stay warm. You just have to remember to roll down on of your windows a bit for minor air exchange. Great idea Sir!!!
we once had a power outage of two weeks ( crankers stole the replacement wire) and other than closing down the space to be heated to one room, I was able to keep a family of six alive when it was only 17 degrees outside. I heated rocks in a fire much as the Indians did for their sweat lodges( luckily we live in a forest) and hauled them in a metal pan to a camp Grill that's about a foot-and-a-half above the floor. we opened up two of the bedrooms to the hot room because we were sweating!
Awesome, I think is important to know this examples because you never know where you will be and what can happen in any given situation you may need to run with the minimum. I can see me putting together a couple of this cans in my car. I will definitely pass this info to my family and friends in Centro America. thank you. 👍
I remember being told in the Prairies that a lit candle produces enough heat in a car to keep you alive, note, they did not say cozy and warm, just alive.
I did this as an experiment one winter, was amazed how well it worked...put the top on the can and set it aside. the following winter i came across the can, opened it up and it lit right up ...amazing idea
Place a few small pieces of broken tile (say 3 or 4 - about $ coin size ) around the base of your flower pot, then place a much larger up-ended flowerpot over the whole assembly with the lip sitting on tiles , The added pot will then heat up & radiate like a storage heater." 3 of these assemblies.will keep a 120 sq ft room quite warm, for qute a few hrs in an emergency.
I found your video to be exceptional. Love how you simplified so even someone with no survival skills, can do it. My only concern is, the enclosed space. Can the fumes overcome you or take your air?
Better to use ceramic cotton. You can burn it as many times as you like. If you want something to retain the heat, I would instead use sand, both because it's more compact and because it doesn't explode. Also, remember to burn this in before you use it to get rid of toxic stuff.
FINALLY, a video where the voice is extremely clear, and there's no music drowning it out. Thank you!
Your kind words have made my day! Thanks.
So only an increase of 2 degrees?
It felt like I was listening to a 1930's radio broadcast building up to an action scenario.
(A compliment.)

Your cat barks?? 🙀

It works!
Will that really keep you from freezing? Janice
No.
A "Buddy Burner".
I am still not sure about how to heat my small apt. tho. I will keep looking for answer.
put toilet paper cardboard rolls in it?
I found this video very helpful. I love the idea of using the rocks as a control for the flame and I would imagine they also retain and give off heat when they become hot. Thanks again.
Lava rocks are best. River rocks may burst...
what about granite
CO..carbon monoxide/ CO2…carbon dioxide. :-)
yes. I edited. sorry for the error.

Sir, YOU made my day. This video is NOT the absolute answer to all questions and query, what I had hoped for was to make a video as a starting point for others to investigate and come to their own conclusions.
- a fan ? - was that one of those new-fangled wood burning fans ?
yes clay people t is great to radiate heat. id place some metal under the clay pot.
@@rudiwatson-uk8508 If there is power for a fan one doesn't likely need the emergency heat source. I know that there are actually "heat propelled" fans for the top of wood stoves. Not sure how i might be used w/ the can stove.
There are battery operated fans at Walmart.@@SKYGUY1
You could flip that flower pot upside down over top of the can, lifting it off the ground with a few small items for airflow. The fire will heat the ceramic up and heat the room quicker
Very good!
Use the base of the flower pot, turn it upside down to put over your heater, usually they already have a hole in it and are found in terracotta in every hardware store.
Awesome
Such an awesome idea
You are so right, this would come in very handy and you never know when you might need something like this!

Even though using this in an enclosed space could kill you you should be thankful someone showed you how ? 😂
Great video! Ignore all the imbeciles that are incapable of creative thought.

Thank you for your military service and your suffering!

Happy Holidays

Excellent and reminds me of a guy snowshoeing in the area of Cotopaxi CO .
Thanks for sending and have a great holiday season .

yes, if you use sandstone rocks it will. when I was stationed in Korea where its common for temperatures to hit -40 , I used to put fairly large rocks like softball size in the engine compartment in my tank. then at night I'd take them and put them in my sleeping bag. it kept you warm all night even if you had to relieve yourself in the middle of the night.
Were do you get sandstone rocks from? They are not easy to find. Actually I mean Soapstone as they hold the heat better than any other rock.

Doesn't matter if you are being redundant. Thanks very much for the tips. They are all good and proper. Again, Thanks.
Good advice all the way.Thanks.

That's a good one. I laughed over your comment.
DO NOT USE THIS IN A CLOSED VEHICLE!! You will die from Carbon Monoxide poisoning!

It is not 100 percent necessary to have good ventilation.

I heard people use candles in their car in a snowstorm and it saves lives.
Since there are many disasters in my Country , such knowledge is always necessary.

Did you use the same setup with TP and a paint can or plain fondue fuel?

Approximately 15 degrees warmer than outside, definitely worth the approximate $5 dollars. Thx and thumbs up
One day those in need due to a shut down that mock will be the first to grab toilet paper, rubbing alcohol, a can...and lighter!!!
😀Deformación profesional . También me pasa
Is that what you tell campers about campfires that have "rocks" surrounding their fire?
@@Tylexijade I might start doing so. Mind you. Open spaces pose less risk. Watch those bush fires though
@@AndrewSheldon Is it true that they can also explode if they are gathjered from near a water source?
I'd have thought bits of dry brick, or even better, fire brick would be a safer bet.
@@LG-cz6ls volcanic lava flows can be explosive on impact with water. Also can spawl. I.e. pillow lavas. That's molten lava though; not rock.
Thank you very much for this!! You are so kind. Don’t worry about the crazies in the comments.
Toilet papers are a bright idea, thanks for your video.
NICE! Methanol and saw dust work well also. Thanks for sharing. This is in the vault.
But you left out momma, trucks, trains , and rain.... lol
Don’t forget upper and lower holes in coffee can too- Done in 1-2-3
Could safely put a grate or rack on top to heat water. My grandmother taught me how to heat up bricks wrapped up put in feather bed to keep feet warm.
nowadays a Mylar blanket is warm as heated bricks...It reflects 90% of your body heat back to you, so your really warm in bed....tape it to your top blanket or it will be too hot!!
My granny heated bricks in the fireplace, but you have to be able to have a fireplace going in the first place.......also,if the temperature only went up 2-3 degress in 2 hours, having the possibility to poisoneveryone ,isnt there any solution to this problem???
That's old timey.
Good suggestions! Thanks.
Thank you!
Since Crisco is in a cardboard container, you may want to transfer the Crisco to a metal or glass container.
I am sorry but all those rude comments had me cracking up.. they never and said anything about the rocks.. like platic rocks or something.. those comment had me lmao. but sir you did a great job and I really liked your video
Yep I too love some trolls, makes me laugh
Thank you for sharing your knowledge
I’m headed to Home Depot
Your 100% correct sir, that could save a life so it's well worth a like.
Thank you I always feel good whn I'm learning something interesting
Place a few small pieces of broken tile (say 3 or 4 - about $ coin size ) around the base of your flower pot, then place a much larger up-ended flowerpot over the whole assembly with the lip sitting on tiles , The added pot will then heat up & radiate like a storage heater." 3 of these assemblies.will keep a 120 sq ft room quite warm, for qute a few hrs in an emergency.
Thank you very much for your comments. Much appreciated!
I found your video to be exceptional. Love how you simplified so even someone with no survival skills, can do it. My only concern is, the enclosed space. Can the fumes overcome you or take your air?
@@renebriggs6413 I got a co2 detector when I got a kerosene space heater.

That is if the pot is clay! That's what I use! Awesome idea! Thanks much!!
Better to use ceramic cotton. You can burn it as many times as you like. If you want something to retain the heat, I would instead use sand, both because it's more compact and because it doesn't explode. Also, remember to burn this in before you use it to get rid of toxic stuff.
Fanflippentastic idea. I will be making one up I am a survivalist junky...lol love making My daughter her kit , this is great addition. Thanks bud
