    I'm really intrigued to see where these developments lead, if this is any indication think Pokemon has a very bright future and I'm excited for what's to come! Game Freak DO listen despite what some people like to say, they aren't ignorant to any of the criticisms, they recognize there are issues that need to be sorted and it's clear they are taking that very seriously by increasing development time and creating this new studio with ILCA. It makes me very happy to see! Like, I absolutely loved Scarlet and Violet but it's main issue was the technical performance, this is something more time can address! Had it not been for the technical performance holding it back slightly I think SV could've been the best in the series (though it's definitely up there for me!). That's how I personally feel.

    • @johtojonny
      @johtojonny  4 месяца назад +3

      I feel the same about all of that. I'll still have liked PLA more than SV, but SV coulda been so much less complicated of a relationship for me if it had just run normally from the jump. Now it's my 2nd favorite Switch mainline Pokemon game (a mouthful niche category, but still) behind PLA

  • @Nameless_mixes
    @Nameless_mixes 4 месяца назад +5

    I can’t imagine thinking that Pal World had no effect on Nintendo/Game Freak/TPCI’s decisions.
    Let’s look back at the mid 2010s. Pokemon has to make the jump to the 3DS. Despite excitement for the games, XY were obviously a bit empty and fans had a lot of criticisms about them. ORAS was also a bit rushed and they excluded things like Mega Flygon and the Battle Frontier. What happened around that time? Yo Kai Watch. Level 5 came rushing out of the gates and released a series that was actually competing with Pokemon (at least in Japan). We didn’t get a release in 2015 (presumably a scrapped Pokemon Z equivalent). Instead, they pushed Super Mystery Dungeon, which is a great game in itself and I love it! But that’s developed by Spike Chunsoft. Not Game Freak. The following year, we got Sun and Moon. Arguably the most ambitious games on the 3DS with their respective ultra versions serving as slight improvements. You could tell how much passion went into those games. And how much was riding on them to renew faith in the fans. It also doesn’t hurt that Pokemon Go came out that year.
    So yeah, I can totally see another game rivaling Pokemon as a reason for them to wake up and realize it’s time to change things again. Skipped Pokemon Z for Sun/Moon was a great call. And that seems to be what they’re doing now. I think Riddler Khu was hinting at either a Johto or Unova remake set for a 2024 holiday release. But now that project was put on the back burner at the last minute to focus on Gen 10 for 2026 (while Legends ZA is more of an in-between game that was supposed to serve the same midpoint release window for 2024-2025 that Legends Arceus did between 2021-2022.

    I hope TPC does take some things from Palworld. For the last few years I’ve felt like I’ve just been “going through the motions” with Pokémon games, and that I’m playing just to add those Pokémon to my living dex. I do the bare minimum because that’s all I feel is required of me.
    Whilst they’re not exactly the same, I’ve felt that long lost engagement with Palworld that I used to have with Pokémon many, many years ago. I’ve played over 250 hours on Palworld, whereas I barely scratch 50 in Pokémon games now.
    I’m not a huge gamer. I’ve loved Pokémon since Red and Blue came to the UK, but I do miss the thrill of feeling I’d actually earned something in Pokémon games.

      @@johtojonny I did! I was so excited to play PLA. Excited and nervous because I’m not used to playing anything but RPGs.
      I actually thought that I might struggle with a new format but that made me want to play it more because I might be able to get that thrill once again- and I did, but only when I fought Giratina and Volo.
      It was at that point that I realised that I had just been going through the motions in past games. I had thought that I was just outgrowing the franchise and clinging to sentimentality whilst accepting that that was the standard of games TPC were putting out.
      The Volo battle made me realise that the games could be so much more. Harder, giving that feeling of earned success, mixed with amazing music, theatrics, and surprises.
      I will always try to give the games a chance, because of the sentimentality I hold to TPC, but it feels like a relationship where I keep on getting let down and I begin to question my self worth.

    I say there's a strong possibility that PLZA could be 1 of their better Pkmn game, (maybe even 1 of the best) mark my words! 1. It's another Legends game which was highly acclaimed for its shakeup to the usual formula, we can only go up from here 2. Being well into the Switch's lifespan, they must've gotten more accustomed to the console's hardware. PLA & SV, like them or not, showed some signs of improvement (I know the glitches & lag are no red herrings). The leaps to a new system are usually rocky. R/S, D&P, X&Y & LG/PE. But we've always seen that games get better as we get further into a system's lifetime. Emerald, HG/SS, BW2 & PLA are some of the most beloved games in the franchise & they came AFTER the new generational games. The reason for a really rough journey on the 3DS & Switch particularly could be cuz Gamefreak used to only be accommodated to 2D pixel games. That was their specialty, they aren't nearly as suited for developing 3D games as the 2D ones.
    & from what we know, there're other factors to consider that also could improve the game: taking place in a single city, the return of Megas & a gap year.

    Making higher quality games means to spend tons of time on it god damn it!!! GTA 6 was revealed with gameplay while PLZ-A is revealed with nothing to show. It’s not even close to show off gameplay and it’s coming out next year!! No it’s not because of the next Nintendo console. The game has been confirmed by Nintendo to come out for the switch.
    Adding another game company is gonna just make it seem like they’re not listening to take off years to perfect their damn games. You’d as the biggest franchise in the world they’d have 4 other studios working on games so they can all even out the field. One company isnt enough when SV and PLA level quality is the current standard.

    I would be very cautios to put too much faith into Pokémon Works, it could be a mere formality. There is a lot of misinformation about ILCA because people don't do basic research.
    First, BSDP wasn't ILCAs first game. They worked as a support studio on several prestigious games such as the Nier series, Dragon Quest XI, they are a good studio. Being a support studio is not necessarily different than being the main studio from a technical development standpoint.
    BDSP was bad because it was GF / TPC who decided to make the game that way, low budget, probably very tight dev time. It wasn't because the people at ILCA are bad. Look at One Piece Odyssey, that game was probably already being developed simultaneously to BDSP.
    That said, if GF / TPC philosophies of making cheap cash-graby games doesn't change, if Pokémon Works doesn't get significantly more staff, higher budget, more time, than the formation of this studio could be a mere formality, of the BDSP dev team just now being officially a Pokémon team instead of contractors. Practically, this could possibly change very little. Again, it's Game Freak and TPC who need to change.
    Utsunomiya said they want to keep the same cadence, but they are talking about how to """"keep introducing """""quality""""" products". There is a lot of ways to interpret this, but the only way they will put more money and give more time to devs, is if the games *make* significantly more money. But how do they want to sell more than 25 mio copies? Porting to PC? Mobile? Or micro-transactions?
    Long story short, I would wait before putting too much faith into Pokémon Works.

      Hmm lots to discuss here
      - Even if it's a formality it's huge to know that their partnership will go beyond just BDSP. We all thought it might be a 1 and done partnership
      - ILCA had only worked in U.I if memory serves. So not only did they never craft a full game themselves, but they had narrow experience. An odd choice to hire them for a game (and obviously done on purpose to make gamefreak look ok) no matter how you cut it
      - I mentioned several of your points in this video, including Masuda being responsible for BDSP's established ground rules
      - I've also touched on several more of your points in previous videos. I suppose, to me, it would feel weird to repeat the same things in several videos, but I guess it HAS been a while since I mentioned them so perhaps I should've recapped those points in this video too. My b

      If you look at ILCAs Website, they worked on various graphical tasks, like cinematics, not UI. I understand that this isn't easy to understand for someone who isn't a developer, but that doesn't mean they don't have the know-how to make a good own game from a technical perspective. If you can make good looking cutscenes, you probably also can do good in-game graphics. One Piece Odyssey and Sandland prove that. BDSP's graphics were bad because the game budget was low, not because ILCA was bad.
      Hiring a smaller studio that worked as a support studio for prestigious projects is a very logical choice for a low budget Pokémon remake. No big company would want to do that, they want to make their own projects. They were not going to get not Capcom, Square or whatever. That's what these IP holders always do, like they hired Cyberconnect2, a small studio that did the niche Hack. series, even though Naruto was a huge IP, no big studio would want do make an IP-tie-in.
      I always assumed that they would keep working with third parties for some projects, that's logical, why should they stop? So just making something official that was already a thing before, on itself doesn't change much.

      BDSP isn't bad at all, it's actually a pretty solid game/remake. Could it have had more Platinum content? Sure but I think as a faithful remake it does exactly what it set out to do, it's a charming fun little remake of a 2006 classic. And keep in mind we also got Legends Arceus which is the more ambitious title so we got both really, a smaller faithful remake and a bigger more ambitious reimagining.

The only reason people keep comparing the two is because Palworld can't be bother to be more original with their designs with some blatantly copying Pokemon. Scaring them isn't the term I'd use. More like exciting them. As I said, TPC sees that money on the table that went to Palworld. That means that's 25 mil sales they can take for themselves if they even sprinkle one quality Pokemon game in with a bunch of bad ones (similar to what they did with PLA, but this time they'll likely push it further and harder).
