_______________ I Paid $2000 For Pro Drummers To Create An EPIC Drum Part For My Song!

Time to learn some drums! My name's Stephen Taylor and as a drummer and drum teacher, some of my most valuable feedback and lessons learned have come from evaluating my drumming in a recorded setting, looking at what other session drummers do, getting feedback from other musicians, and being willing to improve my playing based upon that feedback. So I started a sort of reaction mashup experiment series. In a video a few months ago, I created a Fiverr gig and paid multiple 'pro' drummers to record the same song. In the next video in this series, I hired 3 drumming LEGENDS in the Nashville recording industry and had them record their own version of the same song. In THIS video, I hired 3 pro drummers from different states here in the U.S. and had them create an EPIC part for my song. This video took A LOT of work but was MASSIVELY fun to produce.

I thought the second drummer was head and shoulders above the others. He had phenomenal dynamics and control, and knew exactly where to be maximal and minimal. I liked bits of all the other takes, but he's the only one that made stop and say "whoah".

If you know me, you'll know how hypocritical this statement is going to be, but.... I do think Kenny was just a touch too busy here. Not that it was anything approaching"bad" but, the song needed just a touch less I think. Honestly it sounds to me like he just got into it and was enjoying himself. Not a bad thing to be sure, but the 2 and 4 groove with accents on the hats for texture really seems a better fit here. That being said. My take would've sounded more like Kenny's, however I probably wouldn't have settled with my actually busier inappropriate first go, and retracked it, probably at the end of a long day, when I'm tired. My logic is, I'd be more apt to hang back and serve the song better if I'm exhausted lol.

This series of drumming assignments has been extremely eye opening. From the Fiverr video to the two pro sessions it's been so interesting to see what makes a good take.
My take home is; a balance of control, power and pocket. Serving the song, not yourself.
All very good session today, Steve from Arizona was powerful and had all the pocket on top. He would also be a dream to record, it's common for powerful drummers to be top heavy, hitting the cymbals harder than their kick and snare. He played with so much power, but gave the cymbals a lovely voicing.
You had serious pocket on this one too Steve, loved the control on the cymbal swells and the hi hat.
    Proper musicianship from all.
If you're going to do another one, I'd love to hear some extremely technical acid jazz.

Steve's performance was the most unique which I also really liked but felt like it may have been a bit much for a "pop" song. Given Kenny's career, I feel like what he played should be held as the gold standard of what the track should be. It wasn't super flashy but it supported the song well and gave plenty of space for the rest of the band.

I really love the fill at 9:55, where he goes into triplets before the song does, thus turning the table and making it HIS triplets that the music follows (instead of the other way round).

At 15:50 I think a triplet breakdown with snare, kick and toms in addition to what you did would’ve lit that on fire- way better than the others. Very nicely done!! Tone is on point

This video inspired me to hire Kenny A. In addition, I hired Chris Chaney (Janes Addiction) to play bass. I’m mixing the song now and they did an amazing job. I grew up a fan of Kenny’s since John Cougar’s Scarecrow album. This was a gift to myself for my 50th bday.

As a drummer, some of my most valuable feedback and lessons learned have come from evaluating my drumming in a recorded setting, looking at what other session drummers do, getting feedback from other musicians, and being willing to improve my playing based upon that feedback.

Its amazing how the 4 of you came up with almost identical snare sound. I guess its because you guys know what kind of sound is appropriate for this kind of genre. I am convinced that this snare sound is the best for the song's genre. I also love how all of you approached the drum solo section. .
Would you like to let the drumming community (intermediates to pros) play their own whirl on this track? I'm thinking this'll inspire many. thanks for releasing this kind of content I enjoyed watching.

It's fun to hear which part of the song the drummers chose to complement the most. Obviously Kenny is a bassist's either favorite or worst nightmare depending on how much a bassist wants a drummer on top of their fills. I think it sounds great.
Steve sounds like he's playing with the pads, he isn't doing anything rhythmic that jumps out, but he is always following the volume and texture of the pads. That cymbal grab to accent the swell in the pads was a really cool idea.
Scott is listening to all the jangly guitar parts and he's got all this cool cymbal work that complements that.

Number 2 man...discipline and a strong sense of self/personality that transfers onto the instrument...always shines the strongest. Too many musicians enjoy sounding like others...the masters always have their personality to build on and that's what i think makes a great artist. And just watch his body as he's playing...he WAS the track he was playing...he embodied it!! ...great video...really great theme to show how diverse music can and SHOULD be!
