  • Countless millions have heard the story of “Lazarus and the rich man,” much embellished, and with impassioned attacks against the unfeeling, insufferable hauteur of the rich and their disdainful contempt for the plight of the poor. The famous parable of Luke 16 seems to say, to many millions, that Lazarus died and went to heaven, but that the rich man died and went to hell! But is this what it really says? Jesus said, “No man hath ascended up to heaven” (John 3:13). Did Jesus make a mistake?

Good message. As a young boy back in the early 60s, I remember telling my grandmother I heard the preacher use the bad word "hell" in his Sunday sermon. I remember she describing to me, when she was a young girl they stored their fruits and vegetables in a hole in the ground they called "hell". So she reasoned the word "hell" is not always a bad word. Enjoyed the sermon.

I believe Ted misspoke! Its was Peter, not Paul who was with Christ for three and a half years..! I added this remark just to prove I was listening. The sermon was of course a gift for those that morn..!

Peter was taught by Jesus and Paul was taught by Jesus, were both for three years: It has often been remarked that Paul clearly implied that he spent three years being taught by Jesus Himself (1:12), either directly or (perhaps more likely) through the study of the Word. Thus, like the other apostles, Paul studied with Christ for three years before beginning his ministry (compare Acts 1:21). -Google

Well, I don't agree with much of what Garner Ted Armstrong or Herbert W. Armstrong his father said regarding their theology, I have to say that I enjoy listening to Garner Ted Armstrong because he is such a good speaker. He is a very interesting speaker and he has a way of captivating an audience.

If it's from the bible, then I believe. Garner Ted had charisma for sure.

Great sermon, thanks. This topic just came up today online where someone mentioned it. I had to remind them that it was a parable and what the meaning of "parable" is, how a synonym listed online for "parable" is "fable". An untrue story used to illustrate a point, not factual events.

Parable is a riddle as well: Lazarus and the rich man; This is a vision of the first resurrection, Lazarus is resurrected and meets Christ in the clouds; and the rich man is resurrected and he is going through the wrath of God on this earth.

John chapter 10 Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. Verses 45-57 the Jews council plots to kill Jesus. " Even if one is raised from dead..."

    6: 34.
    Ecclesiastes 12: 6,
the physical substance returns to the earth where it came from.
    v 7,
..and the spirit (in man) shall return unto God who gave it.
    I Corinthians 2: 11,
For what man knoweth the things of man save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
6: 54. The only way these Scriptures can fit together is by man's spirit in man going to Heaven, back to Him who gave it, unconcious.
    John 11: 11 - 14,
Yeshua said Laserus, in death, is asleep. Unconscious.

The understanding of this parable: This is at the first resurrection; Lazarus is resurrected to spirit and meets Christ in the clouds; Lazarus is part of the 144,000. The rich man is still on this earth, going through the wrath of God.

The rich man and Lazarus disprove Garner Ted’s soul sleep doctrine

The whole parable is just a Metaphor to display the fact that the rich man received his reward while he lived luxuriously and extravagantly while he was on earth alive , and didn't care about anyone else but himself so he was paying the price of that lifestyle in the next life at the resurrection . He received his just deserts . I find it easy to understand when the Holy spirit reveals the truth to your mind .
