I can't speak for others but I just turn off the damn TV and watch these podcasts. Tonight in Australia we had a choice between 20 year old episode of Frost or Silent Witness for fark's sake. On the main channels it's some mind numbing crap like the Bachelor or a movie that's been on 50 farking times. These podcasts are the new media. Real life stuff.

@May Flower I am diagnosed as bipolar and while mania does make me able to function with pretty much no sleep it's not a constructive type of energy. Typically for me I either drink and spend an awful lot or I'll be paranoid to an almost unbearable extent or I'll get so invested in making connections and seeing signs and meanings in everything that when the manic episode finally ends all I'm left with is A4 books of complete and utter nonsense and a crippling regret of everything I did in that state. Thankfully medications and pshycs have helped me dramatically so the episodes don't control my life anymore.

I had practically ruined my life by 23 losing job after job and flunking several uni classes and repeating the same patterns of self destruction and crippling depression. Fortunately i had a supportive partner and family who against my own wishes pressed me into getting help. Its easy to say oh just stop drinking but when you have no understanding of why its bad and everything seems to make complete sense in your mind and your living in a world where either nothing matters and its pointless to wake up or everything you do you think is perfect then stopping negative self destruction and exercising self control becomes impossible.
