  • Brandon Cantu, best known for being robbed at the 2012 WSOP Europe, is at center stage for this bizarre hand at Poker After Dark. Mike Mautsow ("the Mouth") is also in the mix along with Barry Woods. This one is a real head-scratcher. Enjoy!

      this hand is a perfect example of non-generic hand range coaching bullshit, everyone plays so wide these days your raises are literally being called by almost any two these days at a full table - especially online unless you have a lot of history with the players, poker has gotten exponentially harder to dodge landmines, which is why a lot of these guys moved to coaching xD

    tbh in Cantu's shoes you'll have a ten pretty rarely after checking twice, and 77-99 block the straightdraws that you want your opponent to have, so AK without a club becomes one of the better bluffcatchers you can have (along with some rare random 5xs) - that of course if you dont take accidental valuebets into the consideration :)

    • @jordanLee768
      @jordanLee768 4 года назад

      yeah i mean u block K 10 and A10 too that might take the same line like check bet bet so i was thinking it was a good bluff catcher too, I think your right aswell about not having many tens at all because how often are u gonna 3 bet pre flop and not even bet turn after the action goes check check with a flush draw on board, I wonder tho if it kinda counter acts it tho blocking alot of high card combos because with the big 3 bet sizing preflop surely they are gonna be most peoples most likely bluffs in this spot for the average person(not for this pyscho obviously will prob bluff with whatever) because other then 78 what other bluffs do we have so i think its not bad to turn some overcard combos into bluffs

      He kinda did do that- he sheepishly (and more importantly, misleadingly) said "One pair" or something like that which could've actually made Cantu believe he had won, thinking Barry was jokingly using the two 6's on the board as the "one pair". Actually sorta equated to a slow roll due to that.

    Love this stuff Doug, very much appreciated 🙏🏼. Your approach to the game and constant reminders to ask ourselves ab our range and how to proceed from there are some of the most valued portions of my poker study.
    This hand is a great example! I can def see a more ‘live-oriented’ player just feeling like villains v range is so narrow given his heavy action that AK will be good a disproportionate amt. But when you make the point ab how many stronger hands to call hero will have than AK w his line, it does become clear we just don’t need to call here. So sick bc it almost takes the pressure of a bigg decision off us and instead our action is just a fn of our range! As a guy who learned and plays mostly live, this would have saved me $MM’s and MM’s of headaches lol. Thanks Doug!! Keep doin what you’re doin sir 😎

    This seems like a good board to exploitatively call down an over-bluffer. When the board is paired and the flush draw bricked out, I like the call-down. If I had a read on Woods that he's going to fire more often than he should be here, I'm calling with 100% of my bluff-catching range. I like Cantu's play overall. There's always the risk that you could accidentally lose when someone occasionally bluffs with the best hand, but more often than not they are going to check their showdown value. I like it a bit more when the board pairs a high card because now it's less likely they backed into the best hand, but I still probably make the play against an over-bluffer.

    I actually think Cantu's call is fine if he never or rarely checks an over pair or a 10 on the flop. He has nut no pair and blocks no natural bluffs. He also likely has enough worse missed draws on the river, and sometimes 88 or 99 that block bluffs, that he can fold those instead. Just kind of sick that Barry's value bluff game is so on point. As is his slowroll game by announcing 1 pair when he has two pair.

    Like Sam Soveral said on the previous PAD stream "Cantu is sending the chips in like they are not his" of course we all know Cantu is playing with his own money LOL

    Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey, Tony G made plays like this consistently... even though that play isn’t standard, it worked out for him here. It could have very well been a rookie mistake that fell in his favor but he could have also had a solid read himself. Regardless, it was a Good hand.

    Am I crazy for thinking that this is value bettable? I do something like this maybe once a long session against a player that doesnt fold to my antics. Usually with something like 88 here.

      @TFA16 4 года назад

      @@srki22 yeah, i was digging on dnegs' master class commercial with the "value bluff" comment - more than likely a value bet, although with showdown value I'm almost always checking river in this spot if I'm Woods. Obvi Woods studied Doug's lasts video on live reads and ripped it in.

    I know DP is all about math and GTO, but this is a case where it's reasonable for Cantu to sniff out a bluff. He has a good bluff catcher, even though this time Woods was bluffing with one of the very few hands that still beats AK.

  • @ddhh8253
    @ddhh8253 4 года назад +5

    River was definitely a valuebet and I don't think I mind it. Don't think Cantu is checking back any 10x or 99 on flop especially vs a fish; He will want to knock woods off equity and be unconcerned with balance and protecting all his ranges. Even if he does have a few of those combos he shows up on river with at least 16 AK combos and likely 32 AK/AQ combos and after calling the huge turnbet I think he calls those on this river quite frequently. Not a GTO hand obviously but I think river was woods best played street by FAR (I dislike his turn sizing; you don't actually want to polarize your range here).
    Pio also shows the EV of calling river with AK is higher than calling with 99 due to blocking A10/K10/A6 hands the IP player will shove river with. Although that is with the hand playing out more sanely with IP player also not getting to the river with this way / jamming one pair sub 10x hands.
    I know it seems contradictory to like the shove while simultaneously saying PIO doesn't shove but exploitatively I think the play is good given how much more AK/AQ Cantu gets to the river with versus pio and how many fewer hands better than AK vs PIO that Cantu gets to the river with.

      When you donk the turn you're kind of obliged to double-donk the river. The times the other guy is trapping with an overpair against the apparent fish is more than offset by the time he calls with AK type hands.
      The only bet with those stacks is the push, you have to do it, cross your fingers and hope your overcards read was right.

      cannot agree about river bet being value. that was definitely a bluff. woods was shoving river on any card.

      Its always been like this... in fact the players are getting better every year. The play 10 years ago was like this all the time. The play 25 years ago was pretty much void of all strategy... but thats why you can make money playing poker. If everyone played perfectly, no one would win. Without the Barry Woods's, no one wins.

    Many of the hands that beat ace high are, more than likely, not betting 4g on the turn. The way Woods plays the hand is suspect, especially with the busted flush draw on the river, and Cantu's call is more than understandable.
