Scott wanted to go on The Sing Off with Kirstin and Mitch but the show had a minimum of five members for groups so they found Avi and then Kevin to round it out.
Ben Bram is the connecting link between everyone. He was working with Scott's a cappella group in college in L.A. but he was well known in the community. He knew Avi Kaplan personally and got the 2 men connected. Avi had quite a bit of musical background when he joined the band. He is a classically trained bass singer, song writer and musician who lived in California. He specialized in opera and choral directing. He was a member of Mt. SAC’s Singcopation champions which captured best jazz distinction at the 2010 Monterey Jazz Festival and eight Downbeat best collegiate jazz vocal group awards; Fermata Nowhere’s winning the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella in 2009; and the Chamber Singers and Singcopation’s clean sweep and Grand Prix Award at the American International Choral Festival in 2011 and caused the ICCA to change the name of their award from beatboxing to rythmn section to give it to him for what he did and what he does with Kevin Olusola in Pentatonix. Ben also saw Kevin's RUclips video and got Kevin's phone number by contacting the Yale a cappella group and having them get in touch with Kevin at Yale in Connecticut. Kevin lived in Kentucky. Scott and Ben pooled their money to buy Kevin's plane ticket to L.A. Kevin Olusola, the group's beatboxer, is a Yale graduate (pre-med). He speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, loves classical music, and plays piano, cello, and saxophone. He had performed at Carnegie Hall twice as soloist on the cello and saxophone and has appeared on NPR’s “From The Top.” In 2009, he won second place in an international cello competition hosted by Yo-Yo Ma. In 2011, his “Julie-O” RUclips video was featured by CBS, AOL, Huffington Post and the Washington Post, among others. He was named one of 100 “History Makers in the Making” by TheGrio and was chosen by Quincy Jones to represent him in concert at the 2012 Montreux Jazz Festival alongside Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea. I believe Avi was 21 and Kevin was 22. Knowing that background sort of changes the narrative put out by the show. The 2 additions of Avi and Kevin put a great deal of musical and competition experience into the Pentatonix lineup along with the 3 friends from Arlington, Texas.
👏😀 OMG!! SO EXCITED!! Hope you'll do their Sing Off journey!! We'll be here with you!!.. I'm sure We/I mentioned that Scott, Kirstie and Mitch are literally childhood friends from TX. Avi is from California and Kevin from Kentucky. 👉They were ALL BABIES here. It is AMAZING what they have acomplished on this journey! Grammy's, MULTI award, LOTS of AMAZING recognition from the music industry and fellow celebs! MILLIONS of subscribers and BILLIONS of views and MANY MANY MORE accomplishments!! I feel like a proud mom bragging about her babies😍💗
I so enjoy watching these ❤️ Both Kevin and Avi joined just before the audition for the show. After watching the season 3 performances PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE also watch when they come back and perform I Need Your Love on season 4!!!!
They first met as a group on June 5, 2011. The audition was the next day. Then they had a couple of weeks before the taping, which they spent in Arlington. Avi and Kevin stayed at Scott's house during that time. This was also when the TV crew filmed them around Arlington for their story clip before the performance. The taping began in late June or early July, and the show began to air in September.
👏😀 I'm SO EXCITED to join you on this PTX journey!! I've been on it 1000's of times with new reactors and it gets exciting when a someone is going on it for the first time!! Yes Scott and Mitch have been friends since they were 10 yrs old. Kirstie and Mitch since about 9, 10 yrs old (they knew each other from local theater). Then they all went to High School and still did theater and choir but the 3 of them had a side group and were known as The Trio.
The "friend" that Scott mentioned, that brought on Avi and who showed Scott Kevin's video - that friend was Ben Bram, who went to college with Scott. He then became their co-arranger, produced some things, I think, and is now dating Kirstin!
Right. I believe Ben Bram is married and has kids. And a note - Ben is co-founder, along with Avi and Rob Dietz (who, with Ben, was an arranger/coach on The Sing Off) of the A Cappella Academy, a 10-day intensive music camp held every summer (although online in 2020) near Los Angeles for kids 12 to 18 from around the world. Avi has said that ACA, as it's known, is the proudest achievement he's had so far in his life, which, considering what else he's done, is saying a lot. There are a lot of ACA performance videos on YT, but if anyone's curious. I'll post this link to the performance the full Academy Choir did in 2019 of Avi's original song "The Seed", so you can hear why he's so proud of these kids. ruclips.net/video/XZ89BHmRfws/видео.html
@@cazlaming In Yahoo search today: Kirstin Maldonado is currently dating Jeremy Michael Lewis. The couple started dating in 2016 and have been together for around 4 years, 11 months, and 15 days.

Kevin and Avi got there a couple of days before the audition... They passed the audition and went to Scott's house in Texas to prepare for the actual show... And yes the three went to school together. Mitch missed his graduation to do the show and Avi and Kevin put their things on hold... and the fans love them for it LOL it's amazing to watch them raise the bar for a Capello just during the show... And then keep raising it throughout their career.
I'm so happy that you are reacting to PTX on The Sing Off. It's a fun ride. Fun fact. Shawn tweeted congratulations to Kirstie in October 2020 after PTX sang the National Anthem for the opening of the World Series for the stadium in Arlington. (Due the pandemic, PTX taped it and it was shown on the jumbotron at the stadium.) Sweet.
There was a great acapella podcast called The Mouth Off with two cohosts, one of whom became one of The Sing-Off’s staff arrangers for season three, this one with Pentatonix. They had a terrific episode where the other guy flew out to LA to attend a taping of the show midway through the season, and sat down with his cohost over dinner before the taping and got as much of the show’s process as he could without spoilers (the podcast episode was posted the week before the season premiere). Unfortunately, the show’s episodes were completely removed off the internet when the podcast went defunct, and this particular episode is not even available through the general internet backup, even though most other episodes are. Chris, the arranger, told the other guy that he would hear things that Chris had never heard in acapella before, and I really think a lot of that was PTX.
When they found Kevin, they contacted him about flying to LA for the audition, but he was in the middle of exams (he was studying to become a doctor), so at first he said no, but then he called them back later and said he could go....and the rest is history.
These early performances show all of their potential, but their devlopment and maturity since then is also obvious. That makes me appreciate that development even more.
I was the season when it came out. Why back in the day. The minute their performance was over I said they were going to win. One of the few things I got right in my life.
This is always a great thing for new Pentaholics to go thru. It never gets old (for me anyway) to go on this journey with each reactor's first time and after watching all the previous seasons of The Sing-Off, Pentatonix really was on a different level. Such a brilliant group! But just to give you an idea of Pentatonix's competition, check out the Dartmouth Aires week 6 performance; "Somebody To Love"
They set the standard. Now every A Capella group includes a bass and a beat-boxer. Maybe they weren't the first to do so, I'm not sure, but it's hard to find a group now that doesn't. The birth of legends. But with all their styles which music hall/s of fame will they be inducted into.
I'm so stoked you're officially going down the Sing Off rabbit hole! You HAVE to watch the season 3 opening number compilation. Even if you don't react to it but everyone on the season was great and the opening numbers are stunning and have great solos for PTX... great interaction with the others. (You should check out some of the Dartmouth and BYU performances too...) Kirstie... still the only female Sing Off champ... lol
How exciting will be with you through ptx journey of the sing off 😁 Great reaction and your right Mitch Scott and Kirstin were just 19 yrs old at the time 😁
Scott and Ben Bram arranged this one, but the rest of the songs were arranged by the five of them as they figured out their sound. You'll see them in the arrangement process in their pre-performance clips.
PTX was great already from the gate, isn’t it? I believe many Pentaholics check this out after discovering them on more modern songs, but imagine you were on the public (first reaction ever to them...) The surprise would have been ENORMOUS. So happy to have discovered them... See you in Episode 2 ;D
Hey Dennis! I put together a little video of some funny VoicePlay moments that might be fun for you and the boys to react to, but only if you wanted of course!
I love in the beginning with Kevin. "my video had 900,000 views and I was so surprised." Little did he know...
Scott wanted to go on The Sing Off with Kirstin and Mitch but the show had a minimum of five members for groups so they found Avi and then Kevin to round it out.
Their high school choir opened for them when they performed their Christmas tour in Dallas Fort Worth in 2018.

Today I learned where Kevin was from 😂 Literally had no idea until now!
Wait!... They won more than just Grammys?!
If I am not mistaken Kevin got there the day before the sing offs because he was doing finals in college.
The day before the audition. The first episode was a bit after that. I am not exactly sure how long after.
Mitch was still in high school. He, Scott and Kirstin were 19.

That "whistle" is Avi doing Overtone singing. I think the judges mistook it for Kevin. Still, great for their first number on the show. :)
