      Hi Gabbie! You really did well with cooking. :) I suggest for the next time, you really cook the onions until its wilted, and cook with it the spices (esp turmeric) for 2-3 minutes until it all comes together and becomes a well cooked paste. Afterwards, you can add all other vegetables/meat. :)

    I need to call something out. The people who are getting pissed off about how this is not the right way to cook biriyani, REMEMBER THAT THERE IS NO ONE WAY TO COOK BIRIYANI. different regions in North, South, Central and North East cook biriyani differently. From the spices and methods that Gabie has used, (cooked washed rice, curry leaves, mint, coriander) I can confidently say that this is some kind of fusion between Southern and Rajasthani biriyani, and not North-Eastern Dum Biriyani that others were expecting.

    You did a good job for a first try. Some suggestions:
    1) saute the "masala" in the order - onion, ginger-garlic paste, the spices, tomato and then veggies or meat. The spices need to heat up to get the taste and aromas going.
    2) boil the rice way less. Especially the basmati rice. I know Korean rice is a little bit more done than Indian rice, and I love it with Korean side dishes. But to get more tasty biriyani, you need the rice to be like pasta- kind of al dente. Not mushed, but the grains seperated.
    3) this is more of a misspoken thing rather than cooking tip. " Chai" means tea. It's literally the word for tea in hindi. so just say chai or tea. Chai tea is just...not right.
    I loved your enthusiasm. So..keep going. :)

    • @sindydeng6405
      @sindydeng6405 4 года назад +14

      i get the concept of what ur trying to say, bc in most asian countries chai/cha is tea, but you have to understand that "chai" tea is a different type of tea. our normal tea in england would be "black" (english breakfast) tea, but if you go elsewhere where that isnt your default tea then you wont get the tea you want, for example oolong or green tea in china would be "tea" but if you go there and want black tea you'd have to say "black tea" even if tea just means black tea to you. also for someone to just say the type is weird... i want black instead of "black tea" as a whole, would be weirder than saying "tea tea" bc again chai is a type of tea in england so youre not even technically saying "tea tea". (the packaging for the tea in the video is basically what im trying to say) "chai teabags" like "green teabags". same(ish) concept with naan bread, "bread bread" but it makes sense in western countries bc naan is a specific type of bread, also makes it easier for those who dont know what naan is to understand that its bread lol :)

    • @sush07
      @sush07 4 года назад +29

      @@sindydeng6405 I am not sure you understand, chai isn't a type of tea, like cinnamon or english. The word chai itself means tea. It's one if the many misnaming done by westerners - "Sahara", "naan", etc. We have black tea, milk tea and varieties here too. We differentiate by including the ingredient.
      Cultures are being exchanged, food, entertainment & languages in particular. Its not that difficult to correct a mistake. Isn't that how growth works? People won't understand unless corrected. That's all I did. Repeating something wrong doesn't help anyone now, does it?

    • @sindydeng6405
      @sindydeng6405 4 года назад +6

      @@sush07 no i dont think you understand, in england chai is a type of tea just like black, green, oolong, ect. thats why the packaging says "chai teabags" its not "just tea" bc just tea in england is black tea. if you fully read my comment you wouldnt have replied lol. chai is the name for tea where you are, like cha is also the name for tea. but here where gabbie is, chai is A TYPE of tea. it tastes different from our normal tea........
      thats why you can also get chai lattes,,,, bc chai is a flavour here??????? so no one is acc wrong is saying "chai tea". where you are from chai is tea, but here chai tea is the type of tea that you have. we call the tea you have chai, and so we say its chai tea.

    • @sush07
      @sush07 4 года назад +17

      @@sindydeng6405 and that's the mis-naming by westerners I mentioned. Just coz it's happening, doesn't make it right. All I did in my og comment was point out the common mistake. "Chai teabags" is itself wrong, coz it will translate to "tea teabags". Call it Indian tea, that would be more appropriate. Just repeating the same mistake doesn't make it right.
      My comment was in no way hateful towards gabbie. All I did was point out something as an fyi. So she can learn and correct it, as can others. As a group of ppl learning about different countries and cultures, it just made sense to do. Refusing to correct oneself defeats that purpose.
      I understand that the word "chai" is treated as a 'flavor'. Can't correct companies; but ppl, like you & me & Gabbie can call the beverage "chai" not "chai tea". That would solve the entire issue. It's just a suggestion from someone who knows Hindi and cares that ppl know the correct way if usage.
      And also, "chai latte" isn't a thing. I know the chains have convinced many that it is, but it just isn't.

    3. I never recommend chai teabags and would encourage everyone to make it themselves as the result is so much better with deeper flavour! It's very easy too :)

We fry the spices you used such as cloves, cumin, cardamom with sliced onion first then add water and boil with bay leaves and bit of butter. We boil it on high heat for a few mins then for about 30mins we simmer it on low heat till fluffy and the water evaporates.

    For butter chicken the chicken looks very bland. U should add more spicy chilli powder and for color use kashmiri chilli powder(use both). Then u should add dried mango powder, chaat masala, lime juice, cumin powder, coriander powder, garam masala, turmeric and mustard oil and if possible grill over open flames or grill in pan and put in bowl and add a hot charcoal chunk to a small bowl and then add the small bowl into the bowl which contains chicken and pour oil or ghee over charcoal and immediately cover using a lid. The yoghurt part is correct.

    Few tips:
    1) Instead of curry leaves, add a bit of kasuri methi (in the end)
    2) Saute the onion till brown in low heat,
    Order of ingredients should be - onion, ginger garlic paste, spices, tomatoes, veggies/chicken
    3) when you add tomatoes, let it cook on low flame till it releases oil/fat, then add little water and chicken
    4) cook chicken in the curry for 10-15 min atleast so that the flavours of the curry seep in.
    5) when you were shallow frying the chicken, remember to fry first in low-medium flame, so that it cooks properly from inside and then after sometime, u can put the flame to high, this will allow that crispy texture to outer layer.
    6) Indian curry is incomplete without turmeric powder :)
    Having said that, you have done a great job :)

    A tip as a some one who made many mistakes.
    1. The masala tastes wildly different depending on whether it goes on to wet ingredients or oil. So, the order is important. turmeric & garam masala go in to oil right before you throw veggies in.
    2. substituting squash or similar veggies for cauliflower is better than broccoli.

    I'll try to help you with the rice situation
    So basically when we specifically make biriyani the rice is strained while its still boiling so that it remains parboiled to layer it on top of the spiced meat/veggies as it continues to cook together while its sealed.
    And no we never wash cooked rice with cold water traditionally.
    Although everybody can do whatever they want with what they eat but if someone is trying to follow the traditional method then maybe that can be culturally offensive to some.
    Nonetheless nothing to worry about you relax and do your thing girl and you did a great job with all those amazing dishes 😩❤️

      @@gabiekook But we Indians cook basmati rice like that.. we drain it.. to have separate grains.. one may or may not wash after cooking though!

      @@gabiekook haha I think that's how Indian people cook the basmati rice! Don't feel awkward Gabie! Lol! It's just a coincidence that the way you cooked rice reminded me of Uncle Roger too. Hehe

    The food looks gorgeous!!! I’m so glad you tried cooking Indian food even though people are nitpicking in the comments! It looks literally amazing and I hope you will cook more Indian food in the future!! You went through the trouble of buying all those spices already so you may as well put them to use! 👍🏽👍🏽😊😊❤️❤️❤️

    Hey, typically we do not rinse rice after boiling or after straining. Best to rinse and remove starch before cooking. Then soak for 10 minutes before boiling. Fresh coriander is more of a garnish. Best to fry off all dry spices in oil with onion and tomatoes then add veggies or meat then add yoghurt. The coriander to finish..💋

    Really proud of you! You made all recipes like Indian girl!❤️
    At 8:38, I was bit shocked when you said this rice is a bit bland..
    Basmati rice is one of the most aromatic rice found in the world...But its aroma was lost when you washed it after it was cooked!!...We never wash cooked rice...Take the quantity of water as per rice required to cook.

    Broccoli and biryani don't go together. Try cauliflower next time, will be yum. But great stuff...u got the ingredients pretty bang on. Being north indian I love butter chicken and I've never tried to make it ... But I'll try this now...u made it look so simple and so delicious. Was so such fun seeing this and how u got such a good hang of the ingredients and recipe 👍🏻
