Script:
Let me tell you how my story ends:
I become a tenured, award-winning professor of political science at an Ivy League university and then at one of the leading universities in the South.
Now let me tell you how my story begins:
I grow up in rural Virginia literally dirt poor. I drop out of school in the eighth grade and have three children by the time I'm 20.
I consider myself to be a reasonably modest person, but even I have to admit that's quite a journey.
How did I do it?
I worked hard. Not crazy, 24/7 hard. Just hard.
I made good decisions. Not brilliant, three-dimensional chess decisions. Just good ones.
I met people along the way who helped me and sincerely wanted to see me succeed, not because they had something to gain, but because they were decent people. Almost all of these individuals, by the way, were white.
But mostly, I think I was blessed in one crucial way.
I was born in America, a true land of opportunity for anyone of any color or background. In this country, where you start your life does not determine where you end up.
That works in both directions, by the way. You can start out with every advantage and waste them all. Or start out with nothing and become a success.
It all depends on you. Your attitude is far more important than your race, gender, or social class in determining what you will accomplish in life.
When I hear young blacks, or anyone for that matter, talk about systemic racism, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I want to laugh because it's such nonsense. I want to cry because I know it's pushing untold numbers of young blacks into a dead end of self-pity and despair. Instead of seizing the amazing opportunities America offers them, they seize an excuse to explain why they're not succeeding.
I was born into a world where systemic racism was real - no fooling, outright bigotry, back-of-the-bus real. But here's what you need to know: yes, that racism shaped the black experience, but even then it did not define it.
Change was in the air.
Call it systemic reform.
The modern civil rights movement was in its infancy, and the leaders who fought for equal rights for blacks were men and women of all races.
They believed in America and were determined to see it live up to its highest ideals - ideals manifest in the Declaration of Independence, and the US Constitution.
Did I know growing up that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned slaves? I don't think I ever thought about it. If I did, I'd like to think that I would have had enough common sense to know that we can't judge men who lived 250 years ago by the moral standards of our own day.
But I know that Jefferson wrote the words in the Declaration of Independence that made slavery ultimately impossible; that all men are created equal. And, I know that Washington, Hamilton, Franklin, Adams, and the rest of the Founders risked everything to make my world, my America, possible.
How could I not be grateful for that and for the sacrifices so many others have made to preserve it?
The truth is, I cannot remember a time when I did not love America and feel pride in the belief that I live in the greatest country in the world.
I knew if I diligently pursued my ambitions, I could leave the poverty of my early years, with all its abuse and depression, behind me.
I was fortunate in another way. I was spared the life-sapping, negative messages about America that are crippling a generation of young people.
These ideas are poison:
White privilege.
Whiteness as a form of property.
Unconscious racism.
Reparations.
Microaggressions.
Police have it out for blacks.
That the United States was created to protect and promote slavery.
These are the ideas young people are told they must accept.

Merely BRINGING up a race.

Denigrating anyone solely because of their race.
I base my judgment on attitude and demeanor. But thats probably racist.

Carol Swain an inspiration to *everyone* ! She is right, the messages being fed young people today are toxic and repressive. Fortunately, my children (now in their 20's) are a lot more pragmatic and see these message for what they are: self-serving BS.
I agree. I am one of the young kids who is being taught in school that America is evil because of slavery, systemic racism, sexism, bigotry, and other lies. I used to be ashamed of myself for not just being white, but also male. 1619 propaganda is what is destroying young people's lives, and it HAS to stop. I am sick of seeing peers my age be stuck up in the idea that white people are always racist and that we need to pander to black people as though they are more important than everyone else. Middle school especially is what made me feel ashamed of being white and what made me feel angry because of the past. Now I am thinking freely and snapping myself out of these ideas of 'white privilege', critical race theory, and other nonsense that is hurting all people. What especially pisses me off is how difficult it is for teenagers to have healthy relationships, especially with others who are of another race, and all of this because of the perverted far-left view of American history teaching kids to be either ashamed of themselves for being white, or people of color to be afraid of other people for being white. It is absolutely disgusting what the education system has turned into. It is about brainwashing young kids into hating America and to be ungrateful brats about our freedoms, which are now being taken away. Now the Democrats want the voting age lowered, which will lead to more indoctrinated and brainwashed young people voting for them because they've been taught that the right-wing is evil. I am glad that I am catching on to these things because now I know better.
@@alexerickson5420 Let me guess they said whites disrespecting blacks is bad and your sensitive ass took it as “Be ashamed of being white”
Wasn’t she the one who did the video on how the political party switch supposedly didn’t flip & that there was no southern strategy
@@SayYourSomething My teachers never directly stated those things. However, History was clearly being taught from a left-wing biased view, and I have seen many white kids feel ashamed because of the things being said, and many kids of color who feel hate and resentment. It's not a conspiracy, it's a fact that students are being taught absolute nonsense from a far-left view of America. The 1619 Project, for that matter. A project set up by the New York Times to implement another view of American history to push the narrative that America was built upon the things I stated previously. Now there are schools that are banning students from saying the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem, and other VITAL things at the start of school that students should be saying in honor of this country. This generation of students is full of wokeness and delusions, and it is a disgrace. I didn't take it personally, I just learned to see the full picture of what is happening to young students. Many students have even come to believe that socialism is good, and that capitalism is bad because 'the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer', which is completely false. Capitalism has gotten the most people out of poverty, and this is a government run by the people. We the people, not they the government.
@@alexerickson5420 Why should you say the pledge of allegiance? The only countries that make you say the pledge of allegiance are corrupt dictatorships. And most of your arguments are probably exaggerated and they probably said something along the lines of, “So white people abused blacks” and you heard it as “Be ashamed to be white”
OMG, your voice so needs to be heard, may the Lord continue to bless you with many more opportunities to speak these desperately needed truths, and that so many more people, especially black people for whom I feel so much pain, will be moved by your words and lift themselves out of the trap laid for them by the welfare state.
4% of people born in poverty ever make it out of poverty. I don't think they just need to "pull themselves up by the bootstraps, I think that few capitalist systems actually allow for large amounts of class mobility.
@@arceagle0088 Few conservative fans of capitalism will admit to its inherent flaws, the main one being the opportunity for a few to make it really big and the rest, oh well. Having said that, the capitalist system has enabled many including myself to start their own business (two, actually), and do so much better than working for someone, and my current business supports those small business owners. I wish someone smarter than me would spell the inherent flaws in the capitalist system and provide solutions that actually work and at the same time do not crush or replace that system, since no other system has helped so many get out of poverty as it has. The government can help with regulation, for example, to keep chain retailers from creating a monopoly (that didn't help in downtown Boston where Starbucks replaced ALL the independent (and much better) coffee shops. As another example, keeping big business from becoming too big and disallowing their tendency to not care about the environment.
@@SpeakerBuilder Private property ownerhip necessarily causes exploitation as labor = value, and owning the means to transfer that labor into value efficiently means you can charge people money for doing it, essentially stealing the products of their labor. Leftists argue that collective ownership of said means of production is fairer as it means no-one will steal the prodcuts of your labor.
@@arceagle0088 The biggest problem with socialism ideology is the failure to take into account effort put forth by someone and getting equitable return on that effort. The mailman doesn't care if they deliver your mail correctly because they get paid the same either way, whereas if they had to compete against another company that was delivering the mail more accurately, and if they were adequately monitored and rewarded for correct delivery and punished for misdelivery, it would all work much better. But home ownership is a pet peeve of mine, where housing prices are allowed to go anywhere they will, keeping folks from owning their own home.
@@SpeakerBuilderNo. You described a "flaw" in communism, not socialism. Individualistic anarchism (form of socialism) entitles one to the product of their own work, meaning if you do jack shit all day you get jack shit for your little effort. Anyway even in communism they could still be fired if they did little work, it would just be done democratically by their workplace. The manager would be an elected one that changes every few months and is paid the same as the workers.

@@snapcase1 and then there's the problem of having 500 plumbers in in a town with a population of like 10000 lol
@@run2cat4run Parkway Drive is right. The average age in trades has been going up for a long time, because not enough young people want to get where they get their hands dirty, even though it's very good-paying work. As more and more of the remaining tradespeople retire, there will be less and less of them, and by the laws of supply and demand, those remaining tradespeople will be getting paid more and more. Another thing that is restricting the number of people getting into trades is that most of trades businesses require people to pass a drug test - which I've been told by employers is getting harder and harder to find. So, I recommend to anyone wanting to get out of their financial situation - GET A TRADE, and if you got a drug habit DROP IT! Trade schools are cheaper than college, and because of the good pay that awaits many who do, their education loans can be paid off much quicker. Another option for getting a trade is to join the military - that's the way I got my trade skills. In addition, you'll get preference points from many employers for being a veteran. Good luck!

@@bramvdp4191 The truth is that this is an anecdote that confirms the bias of a right wing narrative, on a channel funded by petro billionaires that have nothing but to gain from convincing people to vote the way they want them to. The issue is it simply being an anecdote, prageru never (and cant') address examples of systemic racism and prove they don't exist, because they do. Like redlining to prevent investment in black communities, making public schools budget come from area property tax, starting a war on drugs that disproportionately effects those specific black communities that they singled out and made poor, and so on.
I applaud her and celebrate with her for overcoming obstacles that prevent many from moving forward. I also think there should be a disclaimer that this is her experience which is unique. Systemic racism, racial injustice, white privilege, microaggressions, and a disproportionate amount of police brutality towards people of color are real. It’s true that there’s no substitution for hard work, but working hard doesn’t eliminate the barriers or gatekeeping of those in prominent positions who hold to racist ideologies. Hard work and attitude are ingredients to success, not the final determining factor.
Failure to understand how blessed one is, is one of the greatest mistakes a person can make.
As a Mexican growing up during the 2000’s, I always felt as if people were always trying to use the race card against me. “Well, shouldn’t you care about other Mexicans being kept from crossing into the US?” No. Just because I am a Mexican doesn’t mean I have to care about everything related to my race. This is why I’m a conservative, because conservatives treat me like a person, not a race. I’m a proud Mexican, but I’m also a lot more than that. I’m American!
If you prefer your own over others, you are a racist. Until people accept this and admit this natural tendency to racism, the entire discussion is b.s. People love feeling sanctimonious. It avoids the hard work.
Brazilian boy here agrees
You may think you’re part of the counter culture, but you’re not. Most Mexican-Americans are very socially conservative (pro-life, anti-LGBT, emphasis on the family, etc.)

Kudos to sister Swain for her accomplishments and journey. She isn't wrong about what she said about choices. However, she is bit naive on something. I also, come from poor beginnings in an inner city slum and at a very tumultuous time in NYC history. Crime, drugs, and disparity all around. I also chose to not let these circumstances define me, and worked hard to get up and out of that life. As grateful as I am for my success and those who helped me climb over the years, I cannot ignore a basic factor. You couldn't duplicate my path out a second time using all the same tools and opportunities. People going through certain societal socializations and stimulus do NOT equate to similar results. One bad day for a cop, could've irreparably altered my life, regardless of my input or handling. One missed subway train or bus, could've made the difference on whether or not I may have been killed in a botched robbery. The stimulus some of us experience in our road to success in certain economic and societal conditions, shape who we become and has nothing to do with our individual efforts. It's just a factor, like all the others. It helps you improve your chances, but it doesn't guarantee your success. Not like removing some of those challenges do. Progressive policies should aim to remove the excess challenges from the path of those trying to rise. Of course there will be those who never amount to anything. That will be there choice, but the other factors that affect their choices don't need to be present to add to that decision. My issue with most conservative policies and ideals, is the sheer unrelatable way they determine everyone's difficulties are simple to overcome based on their anecdotal, incomparable lives. No offense to Professor Swain, but her upbringing in rural western VA (the same area my grandmother was from) is not the same as my challenges in Brooklyn decades ago. No different than a poor black kid growing up in St. Paul, MN or Savannah, GA.
Yup. Completely agree. Swain is someone who probably deserves great respect for what she managed, but it is completely wrong to assume that's the most probable outcome. Lots of people try just as hard, or even harder, and fail just because they weren't as lucky.

Not factual actually. There were hardly any facts at all, aside from, I guess, facts about this one individuals life. Sample size of one wouldn't get any scientific merit. And one of the few facts she stated, that her success principles helped her and "millions of other Americans" escape poverty is... wrong.
When Carol was 16, the poverty rate dropped from about 20% to about 12% and since then it's pretty much stayed at 12%. Of course, the actual number of people in the US has only increased, so the total number of those in poverty has *also* increased. People haven't been escaping poverty. They've been stuck in it.
@@mylittledashie7419 thanks for your reply regards poverty. In the US & U.K., poverty I believe is a state of mind. @@markdavis2097 " In the US & U.K., poverty I believe is a state of mind. "

Working out of poverty is *possible* yes, but it is unattainable for the vast majority of those who live in it. No amount of positive thinking is going to pay your rent.

What a breathtaking testimonial from someone who has walked the walk and talked the talk! OMG...I hope her message gets spread far and wide.
God I hope her students realize how fortunate they were to have taken her classes.
This is wonderful! The world needs this !
Such an important message. The message of the left is that you can blame someone else if you fail. The message of the right is that you might fail, but you can pick yourself up and keep trying. When are people going to learn that nobody makes it through life without some failures. Challenges in life are not unique to one class or group of people.
Nobody on the left is saying blame others when you fail. We're just realistic. We believe in facts and logic, unlike snowflakes on the right. We don't ignore realities that make us uncomfortable. We see minorities systemically treated worse in housing, healthcare, education, employment, criminal justice, etc. and we call it like we see it. Facts don't care about your feelings, snowflake. Nobody is saying "black people good white people bad" and I'm worried that that's the impression you're getting. All we're saying is that ALL white people regardless of where they are in life, have an advantage over black people in an equivalent spot in life. That is backed by the data and innumerable anecdotal evidence.
I'll bet I know why you think what you think. I think that deep down you can probably see that marginalized communities get the short end of the stick. You aren't blind. You see them get shot by police. You see other white people getting upset over it and protesting. You could easily hop onto google and research a bit. But you're uncomfortable. You feel like if you let your brain accept that idea it would make you the bad guy. You think accepting that idea means that now you're a privileged person who must be living in paradise! But that isn't what systemic racism is at all. Systemic racism is ONLY saying that one white person and one black person who are otherwise in the same circumstances and same attitude will still be treated differently. It isn't saying white people are bad. It isn't saying white people must all be mega rich and successful. Because THAT is exactly what prager "u" and others want you to think. They want you to be uncomfortable, so that you can come here, where you feel safe. Where they say what you wanna hear. So you keep blaming liberals, sjws, minorities, etc. instead of fixing the real issues. I urge you to get off these right wing propaganda pages and actually do some research. Or talk to people who know about this. You can wake up I promise.
@@teddynewman7102 I had a conversation with a black man a while back. He had gone to the bank to get a business loan, but the bank didn't give him the loan. His comment was, "...they would have given the loan to a white guy..."
Perhaps, "blame others" isn't the right choice of words. Perhaps a better choice would be, "blame the system".
I told this guy that I too, as a white guy, had been turned down for a a loan in the past and perhaps he was making an assumption. He acknowledged that I had a point. Fortunately, in the case if this black man, when he was turned down for the loan, he decided he was going to find another way to make it work. He did so and become successful. He didn't allow his perception of "the system is rigged against me" to stifle him. But a lot of people do - they blame the system instead of picking themselves up and working harder.
Here's the truth - life is hard for everyone.
Now - systemic racism. The are studies that show that a white man is far more likely to be shot and killed by a police officer than a black man. The media likes to cherry pick stories to fit a narrative and that narrative may be true in isolated circumstances, but on the whole, that is not the case. I do see impoverished areas and I do agree that it is very difficult to rise above that. But a lot of people do. And it primarily attitude which makes the difference. The problem with the "slums" is that in order to get yourself out of the slums, you first have to get the slums out of you...taking a "job" pushing drugs because it pays more than doing thing the hard way and you feel like you are "owed" is ultimately going to lead to a dead-end. Likewise having children before you are married. These are simple choices that a lot of people make while saying, "...I didn't have a choice..."
Look - I'm not saying racism doesn't exist...but it is hardly systemic. It's about taking responsibility for your own actions and for your own future.
