I’m new to all this, but I have to say I love the “muted” mixture of solid mohair and variegated yarn the most! Especially the pink one, it made it a pastel dream 😍
This was super helpful! I have always been afraid of mohair, because I don’t know how it will look. Now I can’t wait to find the perfect variegated skein. Thank you!!!
I'm so glad! Yes..once you go this route with mohair, I doubt you'll turn back. And your comfort level will skyrocket. Go forth and floof in confidence! ❤️
That is so interesting. for me the essence of your video is: To exentuate a specific colour family of a veriegated yarn just use a complementary colour to mute the colours of the same colour family down in the base yarn. THe more similar the mohair is to the colours in the base yarn the more the mohair tones these same colours down and enhances the comlementary colours. So interesting! It´s one of those things you only learn by trying because I wouldn´t be able to imagine this. Thank you, Tayler, for these insights!💐
Thank you so much for this video! I am new to using mohair, so this is exactly what I needed because I've been agonizing over mohair colors for the last few days trying to figure out what color combination I need to use to tone down a variegated yarn I purchased that looks completely different than I thought after I wound it up. This information should help me make a good decision. 🤞If I could give your video two thumbs up, I would! I love your energy too!!! 😃
Wow, Tayler. What an endorsement for swatching you have made! You have given me quite a bit to chew on. I have some brown mohair on hand which I bought for a hat kal and have lots left. I have been using it doubled for the heads on my mother bears 🐻 but now I want to try holding it with another yarn for the body. It will be a grand experiment. Cheers!
Thank you Suzanne! Yes. This has definitely opened my eyes to swatching when pairing with mohair. I mean. I'm not a BIG fan of swatching generally (shame on me), but in this case, it seems ESSENTIAL.
Thank you! Funny story: this video popped up while I was *thinking* about what to do with some beautiful variagated mohair boucle I had acquired. You helped me confirm that I'm not insane for wanting a solid base and a variagated halo! ❤
Mind blown. What a rock star you are Tayler! Thank you SO MUCH for taking all the time to knit up those swatches and compare all the results in such a thoughtful way. This was a great lesson for me.
Thank you for another wonderful video. This one is so useful, helping to make one's Creativity practical. I had bought a lovely peachy mohair and needed a fingering weight to anchor it. The assistant at my LYS (a former museum curator specializing in fiber arts) handed me a yarn of variegated reds. Having explained I wanted something that looked like fire, like flames, I thought she was nuts. I bought it anyway. Having now seen your explanation, I am excited to see them together, and just need a two-skein project for them to dance around me, as I am a phoenix in need of renewal.
Brilliant!! Thanks for taking the time to swatch and present how mohair pairing changes the base yarn! This is much needed in my collection of info to draw on when making important decisions involving time and money😍
Wow, I love this video. It was so helpful in thinking about the pairing of variegated fingering weight and mohair. I recently made a sweater out of fingering weight minis in stripes, combined with a solid mohair carry along lace weight in a very soft pewter gray. I loved the way the sweater turned out, because I did want to tone down and blend some of the variegated minis. The cardigan turned out fluffy and wonderful, but your samples were striking in seeing that a variegated mohair, combined with a mohair solid or tonal, could often be much more effective. And I didn't realize variegated mohair yarns were available. I am glad you have them available. Very interesting!
Thank you Chelle! I'm so glad that this provided some insight. It is a really interesting thing that happens when you play around with mohair pairings in a variety of tonal/variegated combinations. Your sweater sounds beautiful and I can imagine how lovely and blended the colors turned out. ❤️
Ok. I am just drooling. With the 1st set I thought the toned down yarn would make great edges. Like the cuffs and button band area. I think I might be spending a bit of money with you.
This was soooo useful. I was just going to start my first pairing, and will be doing a patterned mohair with a base single color. I loved your pairing.
That was awesome! Thank you so much for that visual. I love mohair pairings but so true about blending with a variegated and loosing what you fell in love with in the first place. 🤩
You are a generous artist to bring this to the forefront. I have just started working with Mo and love the fabric. Now I understand the colour side of the equation. Thank you so much!
Hello from Tennessee! I'm so grateful to have found this video you created!!! Years ago my sister gave me some vintage mohair that was in someone's stash that had passed away. My sister is a quilter and I'm all the yarn things. 😁. This mohair is baby pink and also there's baby blue. I took it to several yarn shops and they helped me pick out colors. I never loved the combos so its stayed safely stored away. I thought about dying it, but now I can see that putting it with a bright multicolored yarn will be great. Thank you so so much!
I’m so glad that this video has helped you breathe new life into your mohair. What a cool thing to receive and even better when you feel more confident about how to do it justice. Thank you for watching Nola!
Thank you so much for this video! Someone gave me a lot of solid mohair and I haven't ever paired it with anything. I almost paired it with a variegated yarn I love and I'm so glad I saw this video first! You just saved me a lot of time and disappointment!
Thanks for this video. I just ordered this very idea of mohair being the star pattern but had no idea if that’s the right choice. Now you have me super exciting for the yarn to get here so I can swatch it up and see how it looks.
This video was fascinating and exactly what I was searching for on RUclips. I've never paired a mohair with another base yarn and was curious to see what the effects would be, and up popped your video! Thanks so much! Very enlightening and well described.
Brilliantly helpful Taylor. This will really help when making choices. I’m so rubbish at colours and working in this part as one if my knitting intentions for the year. 😊
Thank you so much! Definitely be sure to tune into the podcast episodes as well. I go into pretty great detail about my projects, the yarn, the process, as well as all of the bits and bobs I learn along the way. If you enjoyed this, I think you’ll enjoy those episodes as well.
Wow… this is exactly what I have been looking for to get a better idea of color combinations when using mohair. Extremely interesting and informative. Thank you! 🙏🏼
Txssss sooo much This is what i needed to know . And Txs for your clear info . The last part was my missing puzzle. Now i can knit my flashy mohair with my orange yarn . Txsss .
Hi Taylor. I loved this video and all your swatches. I would love to see a swatch with the base and mohair both in a highly variegated colorway. Say you took the sapphire out of your sweater and changed the base to the same as your mohair. If the reds and blues didn't match up would they each get muffled and make purple instead of keeping the original beautiful colorway? Love your insight
This is an excellent question. I am actually doing some swatching right now with this in mind. I'm using a lighter colorway than Angel Rust, but one that has a lot of variegation and speckling. I'm hoping to show the range of color and texture when you pair the variegated mohair with a pale solid base yarn, a pale, solid mohair with the variegated base yarn, the pale mohair with the pale solid base yarn, and the variegated mohair with the variegated base yarn, plus a swatch of each on their own. I think this will be an interesting experiment in exactly what happens in each of these instances. My prediction, and one based on my own experience using same mohair/base yarn colorways, is that the colors in the yarns obviously won't match up, but because they are variegated in the same way with the same color palette, it will create a fabric that is just more heavily variegated than each individually. Think: a more heavy-handed dye job. Let's see what happens! I'll post my results on Instagram, but I may also do a follow-up video with them as well.
Never used mohair before. I was given some beautiful mohair, it says 85 percent mohair and 15 percent vinyan.never heard of vinyan and didn't know we had to use a reg yarn with it??? But makes sense because mohair is so light!
Really enjoyed this educational video (hope to see more!) and so grateful you had sample swatches to show! I had the exact same question as your customer and this video answers it all :)
Cannot say enough how helpful (and informative) this video is. However am curious about adding a mohair to a fade and your thoughts on that? I have a great example in a toddler sweater I am knitting using up stash yarn. I was lucky enough to have a variegated mohair on both variegated and semi solid yarns. It has worked to bring to tie the fade together.
Thank you so much for doing this video! It’s so hard to predict what the mohair will do without swatching. I’ve had some trouble getting the results I’ve wanted so the more information and swatching I can see with different colored mohair and yarns I can see the better!
This was great to watch! Thank you for sharing this 😃 Would have loved to see the stockinette side of the varigrated yarn with solid mohair though, instead of just the purl side. feel like the purl side and the knit side of a varigrated yarn can look quite different. Overall, I actually liked the varigrated yarn with solid mohair. I can see how I might use that with yarn when I'm not super happy about the look of the varigrated yarn (I just started attempting to dye my own yarn) 🙂
Thank you for watching Amanda! And I know what you mean. I've actually been wanting to remake this video as I've developed some more insight over the last few years and I also would like to see the colors on a stockinette swatch as well. ❤️
Hey Taylor! Wondering what your recommendation would be for a mohair pairing with a dusty mauve base yarn? I’m looking to make the champagne cardigan and wanting something that isn’t pink or purple, and might even give a marled effect. Should I be more concerned with the colour of the strand inside the mohair? Or will the fuzz of the mohair also contribute towards the marle effect
If you’re looking to neutralize the pinkness in the mauve, I would go with something gold, olive, or even in the blue family. You also can’t go wrong with a nice earthy gray overall vibe to tone things down. The core strand of the mohair will be what gives the overall fabric the marled look, but the halo will give the overall tone. I hope this helps! ❤️
first of all thank you for the tips i found it interesting( those yarns are stunning) also sorry for the weird/stupid question, which stitch did you use for the swatches?
oh my goodness! the Titanium and the purple suri looked so beautiful together. Do you remember what the purple suri colorway was called? I really love that combo. Thankyou so much for this video! Extremely helpful!
I had sort of discovered how the variegated mohair/Suri plays with a solid yarn really nicely, but it's so useful to hear your experiences regarding exactly when you might want to swap which yarn is variegated for the desired effect. You're swatches to see how different colored mohair affects the variegated colorway are so helpful too! Love this video and am so excited to hear more of your yarn-related thoughts since I discovered your channel recently 💭💐
I’m so glad this video was helpful Katherine! I’m actually working on doing another video on this subject rather soon. It’s really a fun way to play with color and texture together! Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you for this video! I was thinking about using mohair with a yarn I have. But i don't think I will now 🙈 will need to try mohair some other time. Is there variegated mohair to use with a solid Base?
That is beautiful, when you combine the solid color with a variegated mohair!! How do you like the No Frills Sweater, I am thinking about knitting it, but I have no idea what colorway to pick! thank you Taylor of this video it is so helpful! :)
Erin Fitzgerald my pleasure Erin! And I really like the No Frills. Straight forward pattern and a classic design. Definitely recommend it. I initially thought that the fabric was dense and difficult to manage, but as I work on it and get that “stockinette rhythm” it really flies. ❤️
Now, what if you picked a variegated base yarn with a variegated mohair of different but *similar* colorways? I've found a base yarn I love but the pattern requires mohair paired with it. Unfortunately the mohair doesnt come in the same color way but there are 2 similar mohair colorways that are also variegated, one slightly lighter and one slightly darker... would that work similarly to pairing with the same colorways? I cant swatch but using your experience to.make an educated guess, would that be similar?
Sooo this is an excellent question and here is my answer: if similar colors are present in the Mohair, than you’re going to achieve a result somewhat similar to that you would achieve with like colorways, however you may notice a toning down of certain more dominant colors in the base yarn because of the difference in the distribution of colors between the two skeins. It may pair quite well, but I would expect a somewhat new look compared to each individual colorway. You have new wanting to explore this further. I’ve been intending to revisit this concept in a new video and I think that may need to happen sooner rather than later. Thank you for watching!
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS oh yay! So glad my question could give you some inspiration! I was getting distraught trying to find how to pair mohair with yarn and how to kinda guesstimate what might look good when trying to make an online purchase and you are one of the ONLY things that popped up on google that actually *answered* the question rather than literally showing how to hold the 2 strands together 🤣 your video is invaluable to me, you have no idea. Thank you for putting the information out there!
Variegated base yarn + solid mohair = mutes the variegated colors
Solid base yarn + variegated mohair = beautiful accentuation of color
I’m new to all this, but I have to say I love the “muted” mixture of solid mohair and variegated yarn the most! Especially the pink one, it made it a pastel dream 😍
This was SO illuminating. It makes a lot of sense and I will feel much more confident about my mohair purchases from now on!

@@mumblesandwool1243 I’m so glad this has helped you! It’s absolutely my pleasure.
