    I agree that the edge goes to the EMGs for bridge pickup into the Big Muff, but I prefer the single coils for all the other tones. Would be interesting to hear the Seymour Duncan SSL-5 bridge vs the EMG bridge. Great video, and thanks for all your work!

    Jokes aside, it’s a pure delight to see a niche question treated with such depth and comprehensiveness and I love to listen to both very closely to hear the most minute differences between the two. Also, killer playing as as always. ❤

    As a long time player of the EMGs, they are a unique beast, but no other pickup will get you closer to that 84-96 Gilmour sound. Is that palpable controlled sustain, that bell like attack, the slightly more rounded edge that sets them apart. But not quite that thickness of a HB sound. You'll get a cry, but not a screech from them. You will not get raw and unprocessed, so don't be looking for it.

    hmm... i will say that for the most part, the texas specials win. just because they have a mojo to them that can not be replaced by emgs. but when it comes to emg, they are good for certain things. one of my favorite versions of shine on you crazy diamond is the royal alburt hall 2006 version which uses emgs. i like emgs and should definetly get a set for my first guitar (along with a neck that has locking tuners), my second guitar has an ssl-5 and i will say, when it comes down to the ssl-5 vs the emg 20... it really is you like one or the other. that being said, i should still buy a set. btw i finally completed my pedalboard! i can now have the pleasures of stomping on a gilmourish effect everytime i want to play guitar!

  • @OgamiItto70
    @OgamiItto70 7 месяцев назад +2

    For the most part, the differences are rather minor. I suspect that more difference is in how they feel under your fingers, and the EMG's should be far more resistant to hum and maybe have some more sustain. However, a tweak or two on two or three knobs on amp and pedals should all but erase any differences. Nearly everyone in any live audience would be unable to hear any difference in tone.
    Despite all that, I agree that if I were to be stuck with one Strat and one Strat only, I would want one with the EMG DG-20 set in it. I reckon they would be more versatile and useful in a greater range of circumstances. Also, yes, EMG's can do single-coil sounds, but they are _EMG_ single-coil sounds. Listen to the intro movement from Great White's _Rock Me,_ that's an EMG single-coil sound.
    I sorta wonder sometimes how Lace Sensor Strat pickups might sound in this David Gilmour/Pink Floyd context...

    • @jeanjeanjean2541
      @jeanjeanjean2541 7 месяцев назад +2

      I think they have a very specific sound to it. They sound much more unique than any pickup I've heard. Basically when you play them for the first time you instantly recognize the Pulse sound, it feels like "OH! so that was it."

    Are you using the EMG 24V MOD? If not you might want to consider it for cleaning up articulation and extending the high end with clarity in a higher headroom. Or at least adding another 9V battery because it only takes 9V each to drive EMG's built in Preamp pickup circuit in each pickup 🤓

  • @AAAA-lt9hq
    @AAAA-lt9hq 2 месяца назад

    Everyone here probably knows this but using the 24 Volt Mod with EMGs really helps. The EXG midrange control really helps but accessories can only handle 18 volts. An 81 in the bridge used with the EXG sounds really heavy.
    In my experience with the EMG SA/S/81 with EXG control in 18 volts tuned DGCFAD the SA and S sound more like mini humbuckers than true single coils. Perhaps the SV/SAV are better since they are voiced for a more vintage tone. I will have to try them.
    But, I tend to not even like hum canceling passive designs because I think they alter the tone. I think Lace Sensor Golds are probably the best sounding vintage voice hum canceling single coil.

    When Prince play jazz 2009 lotus flower album in montreux or nokia theater in LA i prefer emg SA sounds but in your video i prefer your vintage pickup sound wtf in nokia theater he has a killer disto and sound (during a live session he didn't play much on the guitar during this live) with emg SA best guitar sound i haver heard in my life of music enjoyer. I think it was spc and exg off these pickups need a lot of parameters to have that pro tubesque and fat killer sound i love. Prince has a ton of nice guitar tech who works with him he has a japanese guitare tech and japanese are know to be genious in musical electronic so it needs nice ajustements. Majority of famous guitarists have bad guitar tech and crappy sound in live and sounds better in album for Prince it's quite the opposite his pickups sounds even better live with perfect settings and virtuoso fingers, the boss of musicians

    I have an 80s Hohner strat with really low output pickups, they measure something like 5,5kΩ. I lowered them almost all the way on the bass side and when I use large amounts of compression and some overdrive they get really close to the EMG sound in some regards. I've been looking to get my hands on a vintage squier strat and some SA's but imo they (and all guitar pickups in general) are very overpriced.

      that is a question with many possible answers. First, I have texas specials on my blue one. But I know what you're talking about. Here are some of the reasons for your problem
      - Picking style (this is more important than you think)
      - too much gain
      - wrong pedal with a wrong amp
      - pickup height
      - having no buffer
      - having way too much bass and treble but not enough mid range
      - having a broken, problematic pedal (this is more common than you think)
      - bad cables
      - bad power supply
      I don't think the problem is related to the things after the 3rd article though.

I think one thing thats leads me to want the emgs is simply that they were worked on by DG and they are probably great sounding at loud volume, really sing, and with the mid boost probably very versitile.
