The HDR in the car is really impressive! 🔥 What i found really interesting though is that it seems to correct the highlights when it's daylight but it ignores the darker areas and in low light situations it tries to brighten up the shadows but then you get overexposed highlights. For low light shooting standard is definitely the better option but in daylight HDR works really well with the sky. Thanks for this thorough comparison Mic✌
In-car seems to be perfect situation for it, it goes from being a situation where you need to spot meter or lower the exposure manually to one where you can 'trust' the video will manage the exterior and interior.
I noticed with HDR on, the whole scene are mostly warmer which you said higher saturation giving the sky more bluer and your skin more pinky! That could save us from spending more time in post-production. Thanks for the comparison. Will, London, UK
Very interesting video. Have you noticed a general deterioration in image quality when using HDR, such as artifacts, loss of definition/sharpness, blurred image? I'm asking since when the camera is shooting in HDR it takes 2 shots for each frame (a short and a long exposure) that are combined and blended to provide a higher dynamic range, so I'm wondering if this comes at a price.
There is only a very slight difference. Most important for viewers are the content of the video. These small differences don't mean much. Like watching a 65 inch TV to a 60 inch TV.
Great review man, I appreciate your side by side comparisons. I was pumped for HDR, but after watching the side by sides, I like the brightness of the 11 standard profile better in most shots. It seems the HDR just dulls down the brightness to keep the picture looking more even.
I think I disagree on the standard being better for low light. Even with more noise on the ground the amount of details it picks up and the brightness makes up for it. You’re never gonna get great noise performance in low light but the ability to actually see things in the dark that you couldn’t use to see is a huge upgrade for me.
Wait 12? I swear they just released the 11? Anyway, HDRs ability to deal with over-exposure is awesome, they need to tone down the black boosting or give the user control though. Battery life comparisons would have been nice.
Great comparison!! In some shots HDR looks a little bit too "artificial" to me. But generally it seems that GoPro found a good balance and did not overdo the processing. Very interesting that light situations with lower dynamic range remain hardly untouched. Nevertheless a review of Phillip Skraba shows unnatural skin tones in certain situations. On a small smartphone display and with RUclips compression the night scenes with HDR look good. But it's easy to imagine that there will be a lot of noise in the brightened up parts of the image. I think the difficult part will be to decide when to use HDR and when not...!
In most shots, they both look good to me, I am not that good at spotting differences. Normally, I would say that you have convinced me to buy something again, but, this time, I already pre-ordered mine last week! Haha. Great job as usual!
Exactly what I wanted to see! Thanks Mic!! Thinking on upgrading from the 10, the HDR feature is the most interesting part of the 12. Often with the 10 I have quite overexposed areas in high-contrast scenes.
Testing HDR on my HERO12 I noticed 2 things I don't like: 1. Panning from a dark to a bright scene (or viceversa) the GoPro of course compensate the exposition, but the transition isn't smooth, it kinda flickers. 2. I tested standard video and HDR video with Low sharpens and the HDR video is wayyy too blurry compared to the standard video. I like to sharpen my videos with Premiere Pro: for standard video I set the sharpening factor to 100, for HDR I need to set 180-200 and I still don't get all the details of the normal video. Overall in high contrast scenes the HDR video is better, even if it has less details.
MITCH! this is such a great video!! Love all the side-by-side examples in tall the different environments! really highlights when to use HDR or not! those in-car shots are wild! & honestly, was super skeptical about HDR, but after using it for the past months, HDR has been my go-to for everyday capture!
I have the 12 gopro and before the 7. I think the hdr on 12 is not interesting most of time, and it's better to shoot every video in standard, and do the color correction after to be according with other camera also if needed. I tested a little the hdr mode. Protune is locked when you active hdr, and it's a problem because by day, in a car, all the black area have lot of noise because hdr select a big value of iso. I tested also by sunset, and I saw that the ground or the sky are good in the global result but too noisy also... It's better to be in stand mode I think and lock iqo at 800 maximum. Good video thank you
This quality of the HDR footage is pretty underwhelming compared to what the iPhone 13 and 14X plus can do. Mind if I ask what your settings were for these? Shutter speed, frame rate, ISO, sharpness, etc?
I currently have a 9 and I've been thinking about whether the 12 is really worth it or not. I like taking videos of castles, temples, and shrines in Japan, so the HDR is definitely gonna help me get some good footage. Now I'm certain I want the 12! Thank you :)
Hey there hope you can help me. I want to use it mostly inside buildings with bulbes. The price of the 12 doubles the price of the 11 mini (in my case, in Mexico). Is it worth it to go for the 12. Thanks.
Really appreciate that video you've done a great job in showing comparison videos👍always love and appreciate your input and approach😉my 12 is shipping today😎stay safe out there and PLEASE let's have more from your wonderful location 🙏👍😉😎
Amazing videos. I am looking to buy a GoPro 12 Creator edition to make aircraft videos. Can you please tell me how long you can film with a 120GB Micro SD card? Kind regards Edi
Excellent side by comparison Mic, I was thinking about the 11 but just ordered the 12 & the Lens Mod 2.0! Upgrading from the 9 so I can’t wait to see how much difference it will be🤙
Not a fan of hdr look . Its true that it gives better result in high lights but the looks is weird. It remind me the iphone 12 pro color setup ( default settings ). I can tell you just by looking at the picture it comes from an 12 pro. Apple change the setting in the next ones let s hope gopro will do the same for the 13 Maybe it ca be fixed in post prod by lowering the blacks and push a little bit the contrast. I m interested to have your tests with the 12 in scubadiving but deeper (20m)
You do NOT want to use HDR in low light with a camera that has such a small sensor since it will try to push the shadows more than a stop it will fall apart. I would ONLY use HDR in bright situations (and backlit mostly) to preserve the highlights
Is there any chance you can upload original HDR video files somewhere like Dropbox? Maybe not all, but at least 2-3 videos. Wanna play with it a little bit before decide to buy 12.
Thank you so much Sir ❤ for the woderderful comparison that makes us know which is much better. With this Now I know what to buy in the near future. GOD BLESS! 😇

HDReally blowing our minds 🤯 You found the perfect high-contrast scenes for HERO12 HDR. Thanks for sharing such a killer video, Mitch 🌴☀🌊
Anytime GoPro! Really stoked about HDR video! My Favorite!
HDR only 75 Mbps , normal 4k 120Mbps. Hdr has less details...so for me is bad.
Im hdr bitrate is still same like without? Quality is same except colors? 4k 60fps bitrate is lower than 30fps?
i love gopros damn i just bought the new 12 black its awseome !!!!
So what does it take to become part of the GoPro family like Mitch? Just religiously just only use go pros no other cameras?

Whenever a new gopro comes out, I watch your reviews and comparisons always first.
Thanks, mitch!
Thank you and awesome to hear! :)
Wonderful comparison. for me, gopro image quality is the most important thing, anything else comes second, thank for the video.
Absolutely!
Your video convinced me that my cpl filter will achieve this on my Hero 11. HDR is great but not always needed.
How HDR improves over exposure is a big improvement…!!
Very nice test thanks a lot 🙌 could you compare HDR vs LOG to see which is better in terms of dynamic range?
I think we need 3 way tests. Standard, HDR, Log
Pretty amazing to see behind the scenes that I never even considered. Technology has passed me by. Love what you do and can’t wait for VW update.♥️👍🏼
I love the HDR colors on the non low light sunsets!!
I noticed with HDR on, the whole scene are mostly warmer which you said higher saturation giving the sky more bluer and your skin more pinky! That could save us from spending more time in post-production. Thanks for the comparison. Will, London, UK
I think the HDR looks better when it comes to more natural colors. What is the maximum frame rate that we can use HDR in in 4K?
I agree HDR makes everything richer.
Agree with you. Out of the car there is a big difference but at night I prefer HDR off. Thanks!
👍🏼👍🏼
Awesome work, thanks. I will go with 12 🥰
Thanks! Have fun with your new 12!
Love being able to see the difference between the two and when HDR is a better option. Also, fun to get these shots with ya.

HDR works great! Hopefully GoPro will be nice to 11 & 11 mini owners and include this in a firmware update 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
Thanks Mic. I think HDR should be good for me to use in woodland areas I usually film in.
Absolutely
Definitely a MUST-HAVE feature in daytime👍
Wouh…! Thank you for uploading this bud! And the differences side by side! 👍🏼
Yep........ I'll be getting a 12. The new HDR mode looks awesome!!
What do you value more HDR or 5.3k or 8:7? Since you can’t have all three only 2 of 3, what is the best combo?
The more comparative footage I see the more the 12’s HDR is looking like a game changer for GoPro.
Try skin tones. Looks like total crap.
I don't even care about the camera the hair at 2:15 is incredible and I am so jealous

1:16 and 1:38 Big daytime improvement with sky's hue shift near the horizon. No more teal discoloration!
Thanks for the comparison, that’s exactly what we needed
😄🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thanks for this comparison! I think in most situations HDR is helpful.
Greetings from Munich, Alex
You're welcome! Yes very much 😄👍🏼
That shot starting at 5:31 is really cool. I've never seen a wave like that before.

HDR is better for the low light. It makes the scene brighter & less noisy.
GoPro 12 HDR vs GP-Log please :)

So if the difference is not that much, leave it on HDR? Or does it make bigger file sizes?
Exactly what I wanted to see! Thanks Mic!! Thinking on upgrading from the 10, the HDR feature is the most interesting part of the 12. Often with the 10 I have quite overexposed areas in high-contrast scenes.
HDR indeed looks good but it is not enough reason to upgrade from 11. I hope gopro max has many new features. Im itching to replace my x3

Thanks! Working on that one
Wow, cant wait to test mine later this week! great review!
