I have mine for about two years now and indeed they are a great addition to your tank ! Also very impressive to see how they can change color and very scary looking when going in sleep-mode :) The first time I saw that I was really shocked but it seems normal behaviour.
For smaller tanks, a Fiji/Bicolour foxfaces are good. I have one in a 200g with lots of live rock, after cycling my tank was full of gha, after adding the foxface, it was all gone within a week.
I will soon pull out both tangs that I have and trade them in maybe a one spot foxface will be added but I rather would focus on lowering the stocking level first.
When I bought my foxface the guy at the store said the day before he was cleaning above the tank and the foxface got spooked, jumped out and stuck into his arm with his venemous spines haha luckily I never had such issues he was always a model citizen for me and even ate out of my hand. Not to mention he never harmed a coral and devoured any and all bubble algea. Unfortunately I had to rehome him as he grew to large before I was able to upgrade my tank.
I got a tonga foxface as an impulse buy. I was surprised he fixed my hair algae growing all over my tank and frag plugs. Excellent impulse buy I suppose 😀
Had one after seeing all the reviews. In less than a week he was eating my LPS and Softies. Tank looked like a glitter bomb had gone off after he sat pulling the heads off my GSP and they flowed round the tank. Looked good but had to return him. Wasn't easy to catch in the slightest for me even with 2 people. Shame though as they're lovely fish to watch.
They can be very mean and aggressive eaters when they will grow. My also eats acans, zoas and micromusas. Very bad experience, but their habits are possibly different from one to another individual. Cheers Piotr
My fox face decided that it wanted an expensive snack and took a bite out of my clam. My poor clam coward for 10 mins as it was worried it would do it again. It's not like I haven't got algea to eat, he was just was extra hungry that day. I feed him some flake food at 1ish most days to stop him biting at clammy and touch wood he has stopped. But he has a lovely personality, I find he is the peacemaker in my tank.
I actually just got a Fiji Foxface and so far I have seen him eat algae off however 3 fishes have died. Im not sure if its a coincidence but I'm bummed. I lost my Japanese Swallow Tail Angel, Coral Beauty Angel, and my 6 line wrasse. I have not witnessed it in front of my eyes if they ran into his venomous fins but ever since I put the Foxface in, my other fishes has passed away every other day.
I need to ask my LFS if they carry the OSFF at smaller sizes! If they do, I will seriously reconsider having a Yellow Tang! Would you say they’re also hardier and more disease resistant than Tangs?
Whoa, Alex, thanks for taking the time to reply personally! I’ve been a fan of your videos for a while already and I must say they’ve helped me a lot as I’m about to enter this amazing hobby. As long as my LFS can get One Spots in at smaller sizes for me, I may well pick one over a Yellow Tang! Also less trouble with my Butterflyfish as my planned trio of Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish will also be laterally compressed. My tank will be a 6x2.3x1.8 183 by the way, custom built tank a bit wider than a standard 6-2-2 180 and a bit shorter. Keep it up!
If you are in the uk and the lfs uses tmc for its fish, you have a good chance of getting a baby one. As that has been what they have had in stock recently.
I have a fox face fish and I have a Quick question is it normal for my fox face to have cloudy eyes ???? Not extremely cloudy but do they have cloud of your eyes then other fish
Hi Alex, i got in love with a tiny one spot foxface at my LFS it is about 3cm only, do you think it will do well in my 24G tank, at least for a year (planning for a bigger one, and saving for it).
Yes, I do. I've seen a few that size recently - they're so cool! I don't know how quick they grow at that age, but i'd be happy to try for a year. If it gets big, bioload will be an issue in a small tank though so just keep that in mind.
I am considering getting into reef keeping and found a store near me that will charge £8.50 per 25 litres for seawater. Is that the normal price for London area? Or should I just get a RO unit? I really don't have much space for the RO to be honest but I can put it in the garden area. Nice video btw!
@@ReefDork Thanks for the reply Reef Dork. I just have a quick question that you probably get asked a lot. What size and type of tank should I start with as a beginner? I am looking at either the Red Sea Max E260 which is an all-in-one or the red Sea Max XL200 which comes with a sump only. Thanks!
Sumps are fantastic - gives you more options with filtration and makes access for maintenance easy. I really like the xl200 personally, but both are good options 🙂
Get a acclamation box or even a clear fridge organiser box and drill some holes in it for water flow and then either get one with a lid and again drill holes in it or put a net cover over it and put a mirror decent sized mirror in front of your tank for at least 2 weeks and then put the foxface in and leave the mirror for another week. And everything should go smoothly!
@@OA1998. I made all of that. The Fox ended dying after a couple of weeks, because of the stress, I guess: It hadn't a single wound, but the zebra wouldn't leave it alone. Not the first fish the zebra kills.
@@i_cant_think8947You're right. I put the Zebrasoma the last, but it had velvet, that killed all the other fishes but 3 of them. Then I had to buy new fishes...
All i got from the video is 0.6 PO4. But why ?? I keep my PO4 at 0.01 and if it rises at 0.06+ coral reduce alk consumption by 40%. Some don't show polyps at 0.06+. Also I have no algae in the tank but would want some for my cleanup hermits/snails.
I took my eye off the ball to be honest! When I tested, I got 0.12 with the Red Sea kit, but I haven't sent off an icp for ages (until last week). I'm working on getting it down slowly though - around 0.05 would be nice 🙂
My experience with a foxface. Yeah absolutely algae eating machine, that said you can see by their mouth they are specialized in how they do it compared to something like a bristletooth tang, one of the only fish I've seen that actually eats bubble algae, and just about any type of green algae (won't touch dinos or cyano unfortunately). That said I got rid of my Foxface, 300 gallon tub that was holding fish for way too long and he did get big, 8" specimen in the store.. yeah that sounds about right for what I had, few years to get there? sure but any success in this hobby is measured in years, not in months, and I'm personally against the "I'll trade it when it gets too big" mentality. Now I was downgrading to a 200 gallon tank when I got rid of him, but the main reason I got rid of him is he was definitely harassing my tangs, specifically my purple tang, chasing and nibbling at the tail. So yeah they are piggies which is great for eating algae, but the piggy mentality makes them aggressive for food too.
Mine has eaten it in the past. They're known for it so worth a crack - he's been the best algae eating fish I've ever had. Better than kole tangs, tomini and a purple tang.
Purchased a large one of these today but it’s being attacked by a damsel which is smaller, turned the lights off so he can get some rest and be left alone. CANT CATCH THE DAMSEL I WANT HIM OUT! Any help please?
No. You should get a no-spot foxface, the Foxface Lo. They're slightly less temperamental and with one added benefit; they eat bubble algae much more aggressively.
Just got my one spot foxface 6 days ago (2 inches). At first, I put it in acclimate box. But it was so paranoid its mouth got injured as it swam against the box. I took it out the following day. Now it looks like a real rabbit since its upper lip is gone from injiry. It is getting better everyday. Its lip is starting to grow back, cover its teeth and eat like typhoon.
I made a massive mistake.... without doing the research i impulse bought 3 tangs 1 blue (2inches) 1 yellow and one powdered blue tang (around 4 inches) in 1 go. I have the reefer 450 they are all still small but sadly because i didnt look at the max sizes im gonna have to get rid of probably all of them in a couple months or years depending on how fast they grow. But i feel like im gonna just get a bigger tank instead...
It's also worth noting they're less prone to disease than tangs! They do have venomous spines though so don't handle them (not that you ever would 😅)
@Jonathan Fortiz never had one, but yes - probably need a bigger tank mind.
I have one and its an amazing algae eater. Does a great job and is way more docile than tangs! Great video 👍🏻

The foxface is reef caution since sometimes they will nip zoas and donut corals.
Haha, we have loads of Fox face at Frag Farm. Be careful if you have fleshy LPS though

great video Alex,i wish i had the the room for a tank big enough too keep one....what algae eater would you reccommend for a RSR 170l 60cm cube?
Fish-wise, probably not many options beyond short-term. Maybe an algae blenny? A blue tuxedo urchin is the best algae eater for small tanks imo.

My one spot foxface is becoming aggressive
I like your fish trap like to get one can i ask were you got it🤔
It's made by aqua medic
don't get one if you have any display algae - mine ate each one of them :), apart from that a perfect fish !
what are your thoughts on fox faces in LPS only tanks. Is that super risky?
Nope, fine in my opinion. There is a risk, but it's very low and you can always catch and remove him if he goes rogue.
Have you ever thought of using a light blue tank background?
