    Pay artists who are still alive! Why should an artist struggle their entire lives to make a living then sell their work for millions of dollars only after they’re dead, when the collectors and galleries get to reap all the benefits of their work?
    The art world is a scam.

    You left out the best part of the story -- when an art professor who was hired to authenticate the paintings instead wrote a report questioning their authenticity and asking for her name to be removed from the exhibition, the museum's director and CEO sent her hostile and threatening messages trying to bully her into silence. When his crude messages came out, he got fired.

    For the interested in understanding why Basquiat is such a big deal, painter and director Julian Schnabel's first movie was "Basquiat," starring Jeffrey Wright, and with David Bowie as Andy Warhol. Schnabel knew Basquiat, so he gives a poetic account of his life, and why other artists like himself admired him.
    With Gary Oldman, Dennis Hopper, Courtney Love, Benicio del Toro and many more. Schnabel put all his friends and family to work.
    He didn't got permission to use Basquiat's originals in the movie, so he made the paintings himself. First thing I thought, those were the suspicious pictures in the news 🤣

There should be a certificate of authenticity signed, have a reputable auction house verify it for you, have multiple experts look at the painting as well. This museum must have known something was up and still displayed the paintings. Brings down the entire reputation of the museum to have one of your curators do this.

      This isn’t the first time..and it won’t be the last. That’s why they have a forgery department in the FBI. There been at least twenty different artists that have been successfully forged and sold to major galleries/ museums in the last ten years. It’s too lucrative a business for someone not to try. In quite a few cases there’s been experts who have been fooled; People who knew the artist personally or studied them for their whole lives.

    • @mecredi73
      @mecredi73 2 года назад +5

      And the other thing is that so many artists as they’re working give away works or use them as literal currency to survive and it’s almost impossible to know distinctly work that hasn’t been shown per se but was given as a gift or as a payment that only might’ve been seen by the artist themselves. I don’t envy the task of proving or disproving these “discoveries”.

  • @sundromos9456
    @sundromos9456 2 года назад +120

    It's not just the FedEx label that makes them impossible...there's just something that feels "wrong" about most of them. Some look plausible (forgers don't end up being consistent when they're straining to create a credulous knock-off), but most look like somebody doing a "cover version", that is "in the vein of JM Basquiat". It's kinda a no-brainer that the former owner of the pieces, who had no right (financially) to be owning so many Basquiats in the first place, stated that he didn't actually own any original Basquiats.
    As a side-story, there's a thriving business of legitimate reproduction painting "in the style of so and so" which employs many talented painters, the product of which end up as background art in your favorite movie or television series. Think that's a Rothko in the background? Think again!
    These pieces were either out and out criminal forgery to fool galleries, or they were the product of some legitimate art direction enterprise as I described. The Orlando Museum is operated by buffoons who twisted themselves in knots trying to buy into and maintain the conviction that they'd scored a major coup, in spite of their status as an unremarkable gallery-style podunk museum in the middle of pop culture Florida. What's that thing called...?...oh, yeah, gaslighting yourself. Exhibitor beware.

    How tf do you look at those pictures and say “yep that’s a Basquiat”. They look bleak as hell

  • @jazznickel
    @jazznickel 2 года назад +2

    Basquiat's art was terrible. It was bought and paid for by the elite who once bought the art on speculation in hopes of being investments. They realized early that they over paid for the art. As a result they doubled down in their investments because of the amount they were posed to lose. This work exists as an example of how art is treated as a commodity and not for it's artistic validity.

    • @vbm2119

    • @jazznickel
      @jazznickel 2 года назад

      @@vbm2119 You don't understand the Art World and art as investment commodities. They will continue to go up in price, as each person sells it. No one sells art for less than they paid for it. But it's not valued for the artistic nature of the piece, it's valued based on the money spent (invested) on it.
      His art has never been amazing. But in the world of Art Rhetoric, it's dressed up like the Emperor. No one with a stake in the market can call it for what it is, without looking uncultured (as the story goes).
      Sounds like you need to take some Art History Classes.

    • @vbm2119
      @vbm2119 2 года назад

      @@jazznickel No, YOU don't understand the art world nor art as an investment. Continuing to state that his art "has never been amazing" proves that you are clueless. Art is subjective but the value of it is based on attribution, provenance, historical significance, thrill of auction, social status, and authenticity. Van Gogh art is as mediocre as it comes but his exhibits continue to be promoted. Basquiat is popular and highly valued because his art derives from his cultural experience, integrated figures from a medical book called Gray's Anatomy (which is why alot of his art has skulls) along with the controversy surrounding topics like blackness, low income housing, etc. Basquiat was mentored by Andy Warhol, and the paintings are purposefully drawn as child like.
      In terms of art as an investment - popularity & exclusivity are the main factors, has NOTHING to do with selling lower than what you purchased. A Raoul Dufy sold for $350K last month versus the $460K it was purchased for in 2009. It lost 30% of its value. Art isn't a liquid investment- it's an alternative asset class, it's value is based on perception and Basquiat is highly perceived as being a great artist. Get over it.

    it bothers me when talented artists waste more time trying to copy works of art for cash instead of just, making the art. i'm sure if the original artist who made these fakes was able to get them exhibitted under their own name, they would get praise. these are good works of art. technology has advanced to a point where fakes are easily detectable. there is computer programs that use fluid simulations and ai technology to determine the validity of paintings allegedly made by pollock. so it just seems to be a waste of talent in the long-run. if you're an artist, don't do this. just make your own art.

      That's not how the art industry works. You can be the greatest painter alive, but if you aren't given an in by the establishment, your paintings will never be more than garage sale fillers. If you're the worst trash artist but a famous gallery owner gives you a show, you're suddenly the hot, new artist who's selling their works for millions. The actual art itself isn't important, only whether the name on it is.
