We can't go back to replay the Super Bowl. This is a move for next year. Do you want to keep Wilks, which took the same defense, that was #1 last year to #12 this year? We have to get to the playoffs and face teams like Detroit and the Packers next year again. Those games our defense allowed over 60 points in 2 games. We have to win those first. Then worry about the Super Bowl when we get there.

What about the stupid 3rd down blitz against KC on their game-winning drive in OT. Romo was like WTF was that? It was *after* that stupid call that Kyle overrode Wilks when he was about to dial up ANOTHER untimely blitz. It was odd, because before that the Niners D plan and execution was probably better than anyone had dared hoped for. Goes to show that Wilks's weakness was calling the right play in the right *situation*. Ironically, this is Kyle's weakness as well, but we all know Kyle is not demoting himself or going anywhere.

I'd be interested to see what the final snap count was... Defenders on both sides were definitely feeling fatigue. My gut says that KC, despite giving Chris Jones more snaps in Charles Omenihu's absence, had the deeper rotation, and the Chiefs had tricks up their sleeve to exploit the fatigue.
EDIT: No one cares about Harry's love affair with the Chiefs.
The KC D takes me back to the days of Albert Lewis, Kevin Ross, Lloyd Burruss, in that late '80s and early '90s span. Dale Carter, Mark Collins, ... I'm sure I missed some guys. But they could line up anywhere, including 6, 7, or 8 guys up on the line, and when they brought it, they were dominant. They could also drop in coverage for the change-up, and get to the QB with 3 or 4 pass rushers, because half the O-Line would be blocking air, they were so worried about blitzers that never blitzed.

You're not wrong about occasionally seeing the coverage and rush not married up. I watch a ton of football, not just the Niners, and I see that with other teams as well. Very frustrating to see Bosa or another Niner about to get home with a sack only to have the QB flip it out to a player with the defender several yards off. That being said, I've seen this happen with the Niners in past years as well - the games vs Arizona (game 2 vs them) and Packers in 2021, you'll see plenty of examples.
Regarding that call vs the Vikings near the end of the half, I wonder how many people would honestly question that call if Charvarius comes up with the interception and returns it to set up a FG for the Niners instead of having the ball stripped away from him by Addison for the TD. Can you honestly say you wouldn't be praising the guts of that call? Remember, at the time, the Vikings were moving the ball against the Niners very well. Hmmmmmm??

Will Krueger predication come true?? Is it possible that Bill Belichick will be the niners new defensive coordinator?? I didn’t believe Krueger predication at first but I do now.
I think maybe Bill said yes or someone else has been picked as he let Wilkes go quickly.

Those numbers you just gave are not the most accurate. The run defense was 26 in the league. You can't count great offense and possession time to fewer defense yards allowed and think that's a good metric

When you look at the whole season as a grading scale it’s not as bad as people are making it seem. The corner play/ pass defense seemed a lot better, this defense used to give up big plays often. Overall, I think it’s fair for Wills to leave i don’t think he fit the persona this defense is used to.

Sorry, Wilks wasn’t the problem. Shannihan didn’t run behind all pro Trent Williams when he had KC on the ropes and it cost them the Super Bowl. Fire Shannihan he’s the one who can’t get his offense to work against good teams. Hire BB and they win multiple super bowls.

Unique situation, with enough talent to play great defense without over-complicating things. That way, you can plug in athletic talent and bring them along quickly, and you can rotate guys without needing everybody down the depth chart to be a genius.
That was sort of the Vince Lombardi model and the Jimmy Johnson model. The Cowboys didn't really trick anybody. They just kept it simple and executed at an insanely high level.
Today's game is played at such a high level, though, you still have to mix up who's coming and from where.
The Chiefs, partly by good fortune, but largely by conscious decision, have a group of guys on defense with football IQs in the 200s. Anybody might be the blitzer, and every one's a strong finisher.
I was worried when they let Charvarious Ward go to San Francisco, because he was all-around and had great instincts and physicality to also shut down the run to his side. Terrific in the red zone, where he could cover clear to the end line. On a longer field, he had something to fear, maybe, but not in scoring position, which was why he was such a big loss, or so I thought.
But the 2022 draft class is pretty legendary for KC DBs. They've got 5, maybe 6 guys just finishing their 2nd years of 4-year rookie deals. Maybe 7 if you count Chamarri Conner, who was drafted in 2023, and appeared in SB LVIII.
I still like Charvarious Ward. He was worth a whole lot to a very good team, and he made more than he could have as a Chief. But who could've guessed that McDuffie, Cook, Watson, and to a somewhat lesser extent, Williams, were going to have such a positive impact on the KC defense, so early in their careers?
KC also made some good FA pickups along the way, like Justin Reid and Mike Edwards. Sneed was a great draft pick for them, now in his contract year, ready to cash in. He might be hard for them to hold onto.
Can they hold on to Chris Jones without breaking the bank? How good will Cook be, coming off the season-ending injury? Boy, Tershawn Wharton came back in 2023-24 with a roar. #98 got a lot of playing time, and played very well for them, coming off an ACL in 2022 season.

@@hughtoob9940 Steve Wilks took a top 3 defense and made it worse. His defensive line was not married to the coverage and QBs were able to take advantage of it all season, and his defense routinely gave up 3rd-and-long conversations this year. You can be pissed at Kyle for not running the ball, for not allowing Purdy to change protections at the line, and for not investing in a quality OL, but quit acting like Steve Wilks made one of the most talented defenses in the league better. A quarter of the league runs some interaction of the Shanahan offense, his staff is routinely poached every year, and 30 other teams would line up to sign him if he left the 49ers.

Shanahan should fire the guy that stares at him in the mirror every morning.
Offensive false starts and lack of adjustments to man coverage got them behind the sticks far too often and Shanahan absolutely rotted on the bone in the 3rd QTR.
Meanwhile, the Wilks led defense had two key takeaways and held KC to one TD in regulation. That only after a special teams turnover deep in Niner territory. Not to mention it had 3 sacks, and bottled up Mahomes for much of the game.
