Essentially there are multiple players in this battle
King Zhaoxiang of Qin - the dominant ruler of Qin who coveted the whole of China , He was the longest serving monarch in the Qin state , reigning for almost 50 years
Bai Qi - Famed Qin commander who was ruthless and cunning and was the main architect of the battle of Changping, luring the Zhao troops into his trap and killing 400,000 soldiers which were the elite soldiers of the Zhao state. Deserving his reputation as the human butcher or 人吐
Zhao Kuo - son of the famed Zhao general Zhao She , was known to have mastered the military treatises when he was younger as a child.
However he had no battle experience which Bai Qi exploited , first the Zhao king removed the famed old general Lian Po due to the schemes of the Qin state.
Luring Zhao Kuo into complacency , Bai Qin lured him and trapped the Zhao army and was surrounded by the Qin forces. Zhao Kuo had no choice but to fight out of the siege but was killed by the Qin army.
His army was surrounded and forced to surrender , many Zhao soldiers died but it was the ending that shocked the entire country when Bai Qi literally buried the surrendered Zhao soldiers alive.

But it was a hard won victory by Qin. In this war Qin sent 500-600 thousand of its troop to the war and according to Bai Qin who commanded the troop in the last stage of the war more than half of his troop were dead or injured.

It’s hard to believe. Armies were typically very small. It takes a lot to feed, clothe, encamp, cook, transport, shod horses and many other logistical things.
Much of szun tsu it’s fantasy more than reality.
Armies in antiquity were not large at all. Embellishment was rampant. Since history to our ancestors was a blend of fact and fiction. Rome for example often embellished a victory or adversary.
