I find cold showers nice because they throw me into the present. Sometimes I'll be really out of it and not really pay attention to the world, half paying attention to what is happening right now and continually thinking or worrying. I think it really works well with meditation.

As a multi business owner and someone who deals with ADHD on a daily basis, I can definitely say that a warm shower that turns very cold towards the end absolutely makes a significant difference in my productivity and attitude following. This also gives you the same boost as doing laundry or making your bed as it’s a small accomplish for many people. Overall I would definitely recommend that people give this a shot for a few weeks and see how they feel. It’s definitely not some sort of magic fix all but it is one of the many pieces to a healthy lifestyle and the beginning of a good day.

Been taking them since April of this year.
-The feeling after the shower is great
    -Teaches discipline
    -Wakes you up
    -Face appearance looks better
    -Helps with weight lost
    -Improves/increases testosterone levels
-Hair is softer (let it dry first if you plan to brush it)
The only con I’ve noticed is if you take a cold shower at night, you’ll have a hard time sleeping-& maybe a few runny noses but that’s all! It’s starting to cool up during this time of the year, so the baths are gonna be a little challenging. However that’ll teach us cold shower enthusiasts even more discipline 😈

I’ve been doing cold showers for 8 days straight now and this is the process I use. I start with 1 song. Most songs are 3-5 minutes. This first song is not freezing cold but it’s still cold. The next song that plays is freezing cold. Again 3-5 minutes. It’s brutal but after about the 2 minute mark it stops feeling so cold and you adjust.
These are the affirmations I use: “Everything worth having in life comes after following difficult times” so to get through the cold shower I reap the benefits. You do feel amazing afterwards. Also, i just keep telling myself this is who I am now. And I make it through and I feel awake, energized, and better off afterwards.

Just an anecdote, but it works for me. I've got dysthymia, and have for most of my life. On top of the mood and emotion issues and lack of affect, my senses are dulled. I see things, and could tell you if say, a wall had a texture or pattern to it if you asked me afterwards, but it's almost like I'm not paying attention to it and my brain fuzzes it out. Similarly I don't really ever smell anything unless it's a very strong smell close by. After taking a shower I'll switch the water to cold and stand in it, usually letting it run down my back and shoulders, for about five minutes. Doing so brings my sense of smell back entirely (or as entirely as I remember ever having), and sharpens my vision so I'm more immediately aware of details. It also makes me feel more alert and focused and increases my affect. I can't say it does anything for my ability to actually feel emotions internally though, nor does it boost my motivation. It usually lasts for four or five hours, I'd say.
I doubt it would be a treatment for depression on its own, but it's a really cheap way to buy yourself a few hours free of most of the symptoms.

Did you work up to it or maybe do a cold rinse vs 100% cold? I'm interested in weight loss and something that will help my soreness after work. Dr wants me to exercise and lose weight but my feet mostly, legs and arms are sore after work and I just want to decompress. About 12 years ago I gave up bicycling everywhere for 2 years because of a bad kidney stone. Since then I've gained 65lbs. I went from 220 to 190 bicycling and 12 years later am up to 255. Bicycling was great to burn stress before and after work as well as lose weight.

I can say that it has improved my complexion to use less hot water, as doing so closes the pores and thus prevents sebum buildup (acne). Plus, you're less likely to stay in the shower long and waste water when you don't _enjoy_ the experience nearly as much.
It's also a great conversation starter...

After taking cold showers for about 4 years, I can only recommend it, although it was pretty brutal at the beginning (I've started at january) It has shifted from jumping, heavy breathing and lauging finished with somehow superman-like glassy skin feeling to routine in less than 3 months, so I think it's not that bad, when you realize, that all those feelings would eventually pass away, and you will even miss them in the future. And benefits? I was ill abou 4-6 times per year and it has changed pretty rapidly (First time I've got ill was about month after taking the showers, but it was mine mistake to go out with wet hair in february...) but after that initial illness, it has shifted to stable one illness per year, what I think is incredible, and what's more I can go for a walk in a t-shirt when it's 15°C or jump into cold water of spa pools, that everyone else is afraid of, and it feels like having a personal pool... Quite a difference, when I compare it to myself 5 years ago, when I was trembling at swimming pools, when it was 30 degrees Celsius outside...

For the last 5 years I’ve been taking cold showers (from beginning to end) for approx 98% of the time
I only started cause I kept getting an allergic reaction to the heat and couldn’t sleep!
For me, other than above, the benefits are
    - a great way to wake up or re energise yourself
    - seems to regulate body temperature so you can withstand colder weather
    - keeps the oils in my hair
    - skin feels tighter and better
I’m from Sydney Australia so the cold isn’t that bad in comparison to some places, especially when summer produces coolish/warm showers on max cold
But I have noticed that entering the shower cold is hard at first but you feel AMAZING after, rather than amazing at first then fretting leaving the shower back into the cold
Edit: oh yes! I have also noticed that breathing normally helps deal with the possible shock, natural reaction is to breath rapidly

I used to take cold showers when I lived in Florida and Pennsylvania, but not now. It hurts to even quickly douse your hand under the cold tap in winter, I'd probably go into shock if I took a shower in it 😂

I took cold showers for a year , and it has drastically improved my immune system. Before taking cold showers I was getting a fever Avery 2 to 3 weeks, and reason that the people who take warm showers have a better immune system is because hot temperatures do increase the straight of the immune but only temperary . When exposing yourself to cold makes your body think that you may catch a pathogen. And it’s normal to have a cold at the end of it sometimes and it actually makes your immune system stronger . It maybe hard for the first days or weeks to have a cold shower , but as you get use to them you get an extra boost of testosterone that lowers the concentration of the stress hormone cortisol which lowers your immune system

my best hypothesis is that “cold” temperatures makes it easy for energy to flow based on superconductivity, but the human body associates cold with death and thus reacts negatively to it. i think the reason we have monks in the mountain is breaking that fear of cold does open the body to a relative level of comfort in a discomforting way, so instead of tensing up in temperature shifts(knowingly or unknowingly) we get pre acclimated and act more efficiently, saving energy and feeling as if we altered something, when its more akin to lessening some background app or something maybe lol

Over the past 6 months I’ve built up tolerance quite a bit. You’ll notice the energy boost an hour or two later once you’ve warmed back up. For me, once the positive energy becomes associated with the cold refreshing water, you start to want it. Just stick to it and the benefits will become obvious the further you’re able to push it as tolerance increases. I have Reynauds syndrome which is an intolerance to cold. This has helped immensely. I feel warmer, circulation improved and feel better all round.

I tried cold showers, and man it is no placebo, at least for me. If you have a whoop or a oura, you can see the effects on your body and your metabolism pretty much realtime, and you can make it scientifically relevant by taking enough measurements over time.
For me the biggest five things that improved my whoop score (and my blood pressure/sleep) are:
    1. calorie restriction after 6 pm
    2. exercise with calorie restriction
    3. night-time saunas (you can get a portable sauna for around 200 bucks)
    4. cold showers in the morning.
    5. vitamin A/Niacin/TMG/NR supplementation

Was inspired to take cold showers for 90 days and now it's become a lifestyle. 3 main benefits i've learned:
    1. I get an instant energy boost and feel great throughout the morning. my body regulates to the temperature of the room and I feel more relaxed.
    2. I expand my comfort zone making obstacles throughout the day easier to overcome. This is essential to self actualizing and fulfilling your potential in life.
    3. I now have a new "friendly" relationship with the cold.. cold outdoor temperatures that used to bother me is now comfortable for me. I see it as a way to continue growing and expanding my comfort zone.
.. there are way more benefits I've heard of such as fat loss, reduced inflammation, more testosterone for men but I haven't done too much research into those. just these 3 benefits alone are enough reason for me to make this a lifestyle.

My hot water heater broke in early spring. I began a voyage of cold showers. At first I would immerse sparringly. Water for soap and water to rtinse. I could not help but notice the intense release after finishing. Like a pleasure bomb. I don't think that cold water exactly qualifies as pain, but I have come to learn that the pleasure and pain pathways in the brain are very closely related. After that idea became known I had some context to the effects of dopamine. As per the video "how to find balnce in the age of indulgence"
After I got the water heater replaced I still took, and have taken cold showers up to this day. There is a certain mental resolve one must assume to do it. I also noticed that it is important to me, to immerse my core immediately. Dousing the extremities and inching in to it doesn't work for me. And that first little burst of water that comes out the pipe is important. It isn't exactly 'cold' so gives a brief carress of 'warmth' before the cold water makes it through. That contrast point from stagnate to cold is the place I try and introduce my body into the flow. If I can get my core torso immersed with that transitional water, it just makes the expierience less 'painful'.
But then after a few moments and my whole body has consumed the cold, I normalize and it is just cold water, without any of the mental force from shock, or the "pain".
In some unexplainable way, it feels good.
Often after finishing I have a huge yawn. Like a yawn of a child or a creature that is stretching from the joy of a strectch. Not the yawn of the tiresome drudgery of the human world. A primal resurgence in my true self, prehaps a call back to my ancestors, before nukes and governmants and ever abundant toxicity overwhelming all make me yawn with sorrow and regret for a world lost.

Today is my 3rd day of a cold bucket shower. I can say for myself it’s made a huge difference to my day. I feel so much more focused, energetic and refreshed for the whole day. I’ve become 100 times more productive so I can vouch for this personally. Just ask anyone who has a cold shower if it’s made a difference to their daily lives and I’m sure they will tell you the same. It’s like someone said, a cold shower is something uncomfortable and that you don’t want to do so when you take yourself out of your comfort zone and start your day with something difficult that you don’t initially want to do then the rest of your day becomes easier and much less of a challenge because you’ve just overcome a huge challenge of having a cold shower in a cold country in the middle of winter!
I live in the Uk and my friends and family think im going to make myself sick. This would only happen if I was to stay in freezing cold water for an extended period of time which would give me pneumonia. A cold shower however does the opposite and simply kick starts your body into action. On the plus side I don’t feel cold in the home even without heating as my body is becoming accustomed to handling the cold. If anything it will save you on your energy bills during a cost of living crisis 😂

Mindset really matters a lot too when determining whether or not the cold shower will help. If you get stressed out and dread getting in a cold shower every time, the cortisol response from your mind and body will probably make you feel worse and you shouldn't continue doing it if it's not for you. If you're determined to make cold showers part of your routine and are hungry for the benefits, it will probably work out for you.
For some people, submerging themselves in a cold bath is more manageable than having the stream of cold water from a shower slowly wash over their body.

I take cold showers a lot and I believe it's greatest benefit is developing good discipline and starting your day off on a very good note. Allow me to explain. Taking a cold shower is obviously a very uncomfortable experience. The hardest part is often getting over your mind telling you that you don't want to do it. You fight it out and you force yourself to go through with it and after that initial moment of hell, if slowly gets easier and easier. Your body adjusts and you acclimate to the cold temperature. When it's all over, you feel great! Why? It's because you actually feel like you achieved something! You won your own inner battle and went through with something so uncomfortable and made it through to the other side!
It's this process which builds confidence, elevates your mood, and builds discipline and I believe this is why cold showers are so beneficial. I can't prove this with hard science, but I do strongly believe in these psychological benefits

Get wet with hot water, lather up, rinse off with cold water. Helped with acne in my teens and you get the initial boost of energy from the cold shower and just generally feel cleaner

See this I can understand. Bathing in warm to hot water but rinsing off with cool to cold water. I don’t see why I’d be more uncomfortable for a debatable health benefit. I’m uncomfortable enough.
