Would love to hear what you guys think about these masks and you're experience with them in the discussion below.
All the best, Matt Hutton
I know this video is a bit old, but I must point out to anyone reading this comment section that the proper way to put a mask on is to first place it on your mouth/face with one hand and with the other hand you put the head strap. After that you are supposed to fix the neck strap. With a full face mask, you always put the chin first and then put it over your face, again holding the mask with one hand and adjusting the straps with your other hand. Oh and one tip for men: shave or your beard will break the seal. Always check the seal after fitting a mask by either sucking or blowing air while putting your hand on the inhale/exhale valve.
Best filter is the 6006, and the best cartridge is the 60926. They block out multi gas, multi vapors, mini particles, and multiple dust particles.
How many hours of use is its useful life?
I wear the 6800 for work...it takes me 3 secs to get it on and check the seal. But I use it all the time and I keep the top straps pre adjusted and the tighten the side straps.
Hi Arma,
Great to hear from you. Thank you so much for the comment, its good to get your point of view. I'll pin your post to keep it at the top so people can see, because you make a good point.
I get that its probably easier to get on and and off pre-adjusted.
I'm still not a fan of the the number of gaskets and seals in the unit, the 6200 seems to be dual shot silicone and TPU and there are 3 valves (2 in 1 out) vs (4 in 1 out) on the 6800.
Plus the getting on and off, grips onto hair.
Thumbs up :]
Thanks. Most my co-workers and I have short hair so it's not a problem for us I guess. I use a Elevation Training mask when I do cardio...so this respirator is like breathing normal to me in comparison.
Cool :)
@Peter S did you mean the 7907S?
@@clap5 can I wear the 6800 with my glasses on without breaking the seal? (sry for bad English I'm from Germany)
Here after the out break 😷
i bought moldex 9000 full face mask to make sure if shit goes crazy in Australia it will protect me 99.99%.
@Peter S Who cares what people think. They aren't going to heal you if you catch it.
jman12123 bingo
Well thanks for the video
I bought both of those mask,
I am working on an old FREE trailer my buddy had hauled from a place (it has asbestos, like alot of the older trailers DOESN'T matter how well kept they are)
amd we habe to remove the asbestos from under the trailer and from the ceiling panels.
I just bought them, and Lowes was annoying saying the don't have any 3M respirators said they did according to 3M's website, and Amazon said nurses needed them, and not for chemical weapons but because of possible dust debris (even radiation dust) if attacks happened..
People are crazy about them viruses,
but I'm still going to buy some filters that protect the best against chemical weapons later maybe this yest and just put them up..
Peter S “it looks dorky” you know what else looks dorky? Being intubated or on a ventilator.
You’re right. I’ve used the half face mask and it’s a lot easier to get on and off. I’m getting the full face mask now though because removing paint and rust for two hours at a time Taking it on and off is not much of an issue since I’d be working a long time. Doing an entire semi trailer takes a long time to prep it for priming. That and sweat. Using a half a face mask gets your face pretty dirty and you’re constantly wiping the googles so I’m hoping a full face mask will be less messy. With painting though the half face mask id rather use since eye protection is less of an issue compared to removing rust.
Nice video. Nobody showed the masks as well as you did. But remember. The big mask is for uses where you dont want to get anything on your skin. You wear it in combination with suits. Its a bit op for just painting, the smaller one is way better for it. But there are use cases where you need the 6800 especially in chemistry
These things are like gold now. I had the unbelievable luck of working at a job where they had TONS of these things written off for disposal, still perfectly good, and I was allowed to grab all of them. Nobody else at my work cares to wear a mask during covid and didn't want them. I was sitting on a literal gold mine. I had tons of disposable N95 masks as well, but I ended up going through those a lot faster than I expected, it only took a couple of months for my supply to run out. These will be a life saver later.
EDIT: Now that I think about it they're better than gold because at least you can purchase gold, good luck purchasing these.
Yh i know what you mean I finally was able to purchase one at a reasonable price £21 just this week (JSP force 8).
i just got mine 6200 and 6800. so was searching for a video that explains how it works and i found this video and it s very informative. thank you
Great stuff! :)
Thank God I found this video with the exact half face mask I ordered this one
:) I’m glad you like it
He loaded the filters backwards. The printed side of the cloth filter should face toward the mask.
Nop he did it right
Exactly. It says it on filter itself.
that's true
did you watch the video by 3m for the 6800? you need to plug the two inlet holes by the jaw and inhale. That should show you that it's not possible to inhale through the front exhale hole.
If you don't completely shave, it doesn't matter what mask you have. Why do you think a clean shave is required in the military? The gas mask doesn't work at all without a clean shave - CLEAN - COMPLETELY.
Sal Sepulveda or you can use petroleum jelly to seal the beard. It is a hassle to clean the beard tho, so shaving ends up being better.
True 💯
not true
same stuff in scuba diving.. masks and shaving
Correct a clean shave is a must
Now we are all watching these reviews - for other reasons....
Yeah I thought the same
cause of CORONAVIRUS
@@MattHutton will 6800 stop Coronavirus? Also, can you please tell me how often should I change the filters in it?
JustVid I’m not sure. But I do know that you also need to protect your eyes. The advice in England is to wash your hands regularly and not to touch you face with you hands.
@@MattHutton yeah, I know that :)
10:23 --> I think it's important to point out, before anyone goes out and buys a respirator (such as the ones featured in this video) for personal use (non-occupational), it is *crucial* that a fit test be done, to ensure the correct size is used, as well as proper fit in general. At least here in the US, if you do any kind of work that presents a potential respiratory hazard (silica, dust, mold, asbestos, etc), your employer is required by law to provide the respirator, in which case you don't have to worry about where to buy one.
However if you're going to use a respirator for personal projects, and what you're being exposed to is still a potential hazard, for example when you're doing a DIY home-improvement project and you need to sand down wood, cut drywall, etc, exposing you to a lot of dust/particles, you still need to be fit-tested and medically cleared. Otherwise you may be getting a respirator that doesn't filter things out properly, or you may be endangering your breathing.
Seek out a local occupational health specialty clinic that does fit testing. In the US, Concentra is an example of an occupational clinic that provides this service. Some urgent care clinics do fit testing as well. Call them to verify.
After you get fit-tested, note the date it was performed, because you'll need to do it again in a year. The reason for this is if you ever lose or gain weight, the shape/contour of your face might change, even if ever so slightly. Subsequently this can affect how well a respirator fits you.
Remember, doing a seal check is not a substitute for properly getting fit-tested. Don't cut corners, don't gamble with your health. It's not worth it. Be safe, folks, and best wishes!
tristanhnl thank you so much for your contribution. I’ve pinned it to the top ;)
Yes, also. OSHA would ding this person because he has facial hair. Full face respirator requires a seal to skin contact.
Are you aware that those testings are expensive and ordinary ppl dont have the acces to them?
@@aar3682 Yep not even possible in our country i think
tristanhnl medium cover 80% plus in 3m pumpkin head go large baby head go small.
I live in South Korea, and with the shortage of masks, and the need they have for medical personal, and how much they tell you that you "Should" wear masks, I would rather buy one of these, than have to use a disposable mask every time I have to go out.
Less money and I leave the masks to the medical staff.
Helam Game Tech they are way better
In theory you have to change filters here (equals changing masks) and you'd have to clean it with alk or something properly..
@@jonathan.w1498 but the filters don't have to be replaced as often, and at this point, the filters are cheaper than the masks...
@@3dfymyworld484 agreed. Not saying your wrong by no means.
@@jonathan.w1498 You can't clean them with alk, because alk damages valves.
I bought the 6200 (not for the obvious current reason, but some time before, to protect me as I may explore nasty places -- see my channel).
The only thing I don't like is the quality of the straps and fasteners (and the way the fasteners don't hold the straps, which tend to slip out of the holes).
This put aside, it is really a comfortable and efficient mask. I use it now with 2091 filters which are lighter than 6002+5N11.
Thanks for the review.
Nice 👍 I like your channel too :)
@@MattHutton Thanks ;)
Read the labels once..pre filters fuzzy side out, smooth side with the print "mask side" should be towards the inside.
Excellent video, very well explained thank you. With the full face mask i would imagine it would be a problem if you wear prescription glasses.
On teh half mask you put the particle filters in the wrong way
Aye, the writing is on the finer filter side and should be the last layer of defence facing inwards. I think the only reason it matters is that your filter will clog up quicker due to only using one of its many layers.
Apparently writing on pre-filter should be on the inside of the filter according to 3m training vid
I bought a chinese version of the full face mask you have. That part you are talking about won't come loose on mine as or is screwed in. Strange that the 3m version does not do the same. I also have 2 of the 6200 masks which are great. Great review.
Maybe try getting your hair out the way first , I dont think it can create a seal with all your hair interrupting the seal like that. try changing the way you put it on so instead of going back to front. push your hair back and go front to back. I would think that would give the seal a better chance of doing its job. Im thinking of picking one of these up bc even with goggles on the fine saw dust when sanding still gets in your eyes. if your just making cuts all day then the half face would be more practical but for lots of sanding and fine sawdust I think the full face would be better if sealed correctly.
Here and it's 2020...!!!...World in Lock Down...Unreal...
Its really crazy
These masks are worth their weight in gold now. Impossible to find them.
i got two for sale
one selaed new, one new but I opened the package
It amazes me how many people do not know how to put on the half mask the nose brim should go all the way up almost between your eyes not halfway down the bridge of your nose.
There is a protocol to check the seal of the first mask. It's not a simple mask. Who owns them knows it. If you use it without a knowledge you will breathe s..t.
Plus the test to check if every part works well.
It's not a toy.
3M has a very good tourial about this mask, made by experts.
I'm so jealous of your small head, I bought the large 6800 and have to squeeze through the straps even at their most loose position. Although you seemed to have more trouble creating a face seal. Tradeoffs suppose.
I’m glad you have one at least
I can't put on the filters at 9:41 for the life of me. The video is the best I've found to see how filters are supposed to be put on but I'll give it another go. Wonder if I'm the only one with this problem it's my first respirator.... Learning how to sand and paint
Just a heads up if anyone does want to wear a respirator I would advise a clean shaven face as the seal works best on bare skin. I can get away with a trim but anything more the seal is disturbed by facial hair!
which is better anti-corona virus? I'm scared
You need a particulate filter. N95 is what healthcare workers use. Anything above that
(E.g. p100) is not needed, but will of course work, it's just heavier and harder to breathe through. Be sure to disinfect the outside of the mask before taking it off!
@@Rickyp0123 thank you but i couldn't buy😥
that was sold out
@@whguswls798 Happy to help! There aren't even enough N95 left for most hospitals anymore. If p100 are in stock they do work and might be worth getting! Just kind of excessive like I said. Depends on where you're planning to be.
@Peter S Wow that is quite pessimistic! I have not been near anyone in the last few weeks so I would be hard-pressed to get it. You might be correct though, sadly.

Good review, well done, this has helped me a lot. One thing though, just to let you know, the 6200 is the medium size, the 6300 is the large size and I think the 6100 is the small size. There should be a M for medium written on the nose part of your 6200 mask.
DEXTER941 awesome glad you liked it :) thanks for your comment :)
I got a brand new complete 3M Breath Easy PAPR outfit on eBay for $150.00. Lucky me. I guess the seller didnt know he had a small fortune in his hands.
Haha
That's a bit overkill, don't you think a regular respirator would be enough?
With the 6800 I've used them seem to fog up really bad and I tend to take it off for a second to let it dry off. Which is not what you want to do. I did a proper fit test and it sealed perfectly but for some reason it kept fogging up. Really hard to jackhammer when you're in a cement cooler with no lighting.
Thanks for the video Matt! I just want one for walking around in the city, Berlin has horrid air quality.
Which one is better? 3m full face or honeywell full facepiece respirator? Plz guide.
3m
@@MattHutton which seal is better, in half face or in full face?
Heart and Soul the half face it’s a better because there is less area to seal
That's true technically, leave aside the gaseous hazard, suppose i will use it in my dental clinic during aerosol related procedure, like doing root canal treatment, so in that case that full face with bit less seal, can we use that? Or half face with separate protective eye gear and separate face shield?
Heart and Soul I would feel a bit nervous seeing my dentist with a full face mask on unless I was asleep for the procedure.
In my personal opinion the half face mask seals better around the mouth and this can be worn with separate goggles if necessary. The full face masks does cover eyes and face all in one and in my opinion the seal wasn’t as good. But it may be different for a different face shape so may be worth a go.
The same filters can be used on both masks, so from a filtration point of view they should be the same. :)
You can also cover the inhale valves and when you inhale it should have some suction
Awesome
Question the face mask that covers the entire face is it good for survival like chemicals or gases
Oh yeah! It's better than half face mask.
Yep. That's essentially what it's designed for.
There are very important differences between a respirator and a gas mask.
These are NOT gas masks and should not be expected to do the same job.
thank you for show how to assemble both side of mask.
Does facial hair like yours interfere with the sealing of the respirator? (: Great video, thank you!
As said below, you have the white filter piece inside out the writing goes on the side closest to the mask. I have two for sale in Los Angles area. Both new.
Thanks for this video, Matt, I'd like to know if the nose cup in the full face mask is absolutely necessary , i think that it's to avoid len fogging... or not? thanks in advance!
Hi Carlos Castro the air cup is to stop the fog but it’s also attached to the exhale valve so you need it for the mask to work properly.
Nose cup also prevents c02 buildup
Drags on a bit but good comparison. I was hoping to find out how to do the positive and negative pressure check.
I just want to spray paint but I can't find a reliable source to find a legitimate 3M 6200.

6200 better for light dust work like cutting bricks and making mortar the 6800 better for cutting of brick walls and decontaminating asbestos or something
Maxstaber hey thanks so much for your comment! I agree
Particle filter is on backwards.
Without going to the work area I tried the 6035 cartridges on a 7502 half mask for half an hour. But I found the odour rather overpowering in that I felt a bit as if I were getting the influenza a couple of hours after. My ill feeling has fortunately gone off again. I am wondering if some people have the same problem but think it to be caused by the work environment. Anyone know of low odour masks? Maybe it be something to stop mold growth? Maybe the supplier had wiped the silicone with an antibacterial wipe with benzalkonium chloride and/or a perfume. Or would such matter be impregnated in the silicone? So I don't know yet if I have to go back to the cheaper 3M half mask. Supplier doesn't want to say if he had wiped it. Does the silicone have much smell when new and not wiped?
Oh man thats doesn't sound nice. The silicone and TPU that these masks are made from are pretty much odour free. They are designed to be washed, so you could leave it to soak in warm soapy water without the cartridges attached maybe. That could resolve the odour if its a residue on the mask. They may not be genuine 3M masks or 2nd hand?
Personally I would wash them well, check that the seals are all good and try some higher rated filters like the ones I'm using in the video. I've left a link of the set-up in the video description for you.
or.. its related to smells you are getting while you work...
You mentioned about mould growth. Did you mean you were cleaning mould? If so I check out the data sheet on the 6035 cartridges which you can see here: multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/905717O/3m-6000-series-particulate-filters-6035-6038-tech-data-sheet-pdf.pdf?fn=3M%206000%20Series%20Particulate%20Filte
The 6035 cartridges are specified as particulate filters and "nuisance levels of organic vapour and acid gas" which are "below the relevant workplace exposure standard."
From looking at images online it looks like they don't have carbon filters on them to meet the higher level of organic vapour and acid protection.
Maybe I misunderstood. Let me know :] Best regards, Matt
I could not find the level of protection for 6200. I need A2/P3. Don't know what it exactly mean but on clear coat spray suggest this protection
****UPDATE*** Hey apollo, thanks for the comment. I would suggest the 3M 4279 mask for clearcoat lacquering. Check it out here if you like: amzn.to/2tvlQ4J
-I've since decided to go back to replaceable masks for spraying purposes, because once they get mucky with overspray from the lacquer and more important smelly with solvents and dangerous iscocyanates you can just chuck them away. It feels quite a lot fresher and cleaner using a completely new mask rather than just changing the filters, but still having solvent smell on the main mask body.
Hope that helps.
P3 is the level of particle filtering. Its pretty high and graded for asbestos removal, so very very fine particles :]
My front gasket after attaching it and its used and been cleaned few time still fits rock solid. You must have a knock off or wrong seal
The one thing that you have clearly demonstrated is just how bloody uncomfortable most of these masks are, especially if worn for a prolonged period of time. They become even more uncomfortable if your required to wear other head gear like a hard hat and hearing protection. Wearing a welding mask is out of the question with these models of respirators.
Fair enough, they make a good seal though
Peter S so true
Essa máscara de proteção facial total, da pra utilizar para trabalhar com resina epoxi, qual filtro devo comprar? 😊
Actually every time you take that mask off you were supposed to clean it. Either one of them. If you're not going to clean then there's no point in buying it. An antibacterial soap we use alcohol on ours. Either way they don't last very long. They start changing color they got bacteria rot
Good reveiw ... it's March 2022 now and the world has walked closer to a large war so I am wanting to get some. Half one for me as I wear glasses, though I'd prefer the full face one tbph, unless you know if you can wear specs with that larger one???
Is it possible to modify the full face mask so that it works the other way around - filters on the outward breath rather than inward?
My kid occasionally comes into contact with potentially vulnerable people. It is unlikely to matter if my kid catches Corona virus but the full face mask should minimise her spreading it if she has it.
I know this isn't 'virus' certified but Corona is not 'airbourne' so the mask should filter small water droplets or at least redirect them away from people and the full mask should prevent her touching her eyes/nose/mouth which should keep her hands/gloves virus free.
I wouldn’t advise it. And there’s no way unless you cut out the valves and revert them and superglue them back in
The 6800/6900 directs your exhaled air downward so it should be much safer for those around you. Since the virus attaches to moisture particles there should be little "spray" from you to contaminate others. I think. I'm not a doctor.
So what mask is good for when I stain and use gloss laquer on cabinets. I spray houses often and want to know the best or cheapest and safest to use even if I have to buy new mask every time I do a new house. Long as it's affordable every time I do a house.
Hey Crivoh , thank you so much for the message, depending on tr chemicals in the lacquer you are using you can find the right filters for you in this 3m document: multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/565214O/3m-cartridge-filter-guide-and-brochure.pdf

Large since ur dimensions r similar with mine lol
The 6800: which part do you have to change how often to be safe from Corona? Only the cotton-pad or also the plastic cartouche around, which you plugged onto the masc? I am thinking here about buying one for covid-20 (covid-19 too late now) and I want something cheap, effective and simple to use.
Zardoz I’m not sure how often but the only thing you can change is the filters
@@MattHutton I did my research, it is sufficient if you only put 2x of 3M 2138 P3R onto the bajonett clasp (without the plastic cartridge). Looks somehow strange, but it is made for virii or bacteria only (if you want only for that purpose). The plastic cartridge as far as i do unterstand (depends on the colors on the cartridges) are additional carbon filters for example against chemical fumes or other stuff. So if you only want to be safe from corona, just put on 2 (left and right) 3M 2138 without anything. I would even say the plastic cartridges are not only redudandant they are also counterproductive (experts say use stuff like that only ONCE if virii and bacteria are involved). Reason is you don't know if bacteria etc is stuck between the plastic cartridges and then starts growing. So just leave off anything unnecessary. I mean I don't want to change the expansive cartridges after wearing them once.

Loosen them so it is easier to take off.
For the many who have asked, NO, these DO NOT protect against tear gas or poison gas and Can Not be made to do so.
Starting at 1:00 in the video you showed the particle filter. Do those other cartridges only protect against gas and thos extensions must be added for particle protection?
In 3M, all 6xxxx filters are for gas / vapor only. If you want to protect yourself against the Coronovirus, you need a particle filter. Of course, you could always add a particle filter on top of a gas one, but that would be a waste of money. Besides, you can breathe more easily with one filter than two. 3M has some particle only filters. Look for 2091, 2097 or 7093.

You must of had the European version.I believe yours as you found out is upside down.lmao.
On the filters it says "misuse may cause sickness or death"
How could they cause sickness or death? kind of makes me not want to use them.
It means that if you don't use it properly (ie: fitted leak free) you may believe you are protected from harmful chemicals or particles, but your not. The harmful chemicals or particles are what will cause sickness or death.

Hey spider :), thank you so much for the comment!
I didn't follow it up because I preferred the half face mask and stopped using the full face mask. But it seemed like it could have been a manufacturing error because the sure it' because foam rubber gasket that was fitted to the front part of the mask was slightly thinner the the others.
Personally, I prefer using a mask with fewer valves and fewer components to seal together because I feel that there is less to go wrong. The half face mask is nearly all mounlded together. So is one piece if you ignore the filters.
Best regards, Matt
uh you put the full face over your head then pull both straps on top forward at same time then the bottom both at one time .readjust as needed pulling both straps top or bottom at same time. Also if you want eye protection like under a car sand blasting or under a house putting up insulation, the only problem is wipe the face shield now and then.I have both and spraying paint or sanding.but if under something or for more total protection from real gasses that could kill you will want full face.Isnt that why the military uses the full face type?good video .Oh and by the way around your eyes where your goggles have been its clean but around your mouth and nose its black colored meaning yopu had dust coming all around into your nose and mouth.better try a better filter or change out to one that filters better.
Thank you!
No worries

Hey bud , I have a similar 6800 however I am not able to pop out the shield of central exhalation valve like you did easily in the video. Any tips ?
Hey Jinpachi Mishima there is a clip on the top of the shield, you just need to put you're finger underneath and pry it open. :)
Thanks for getting back at me Matt. I actually got to open it however inplace of a clip I just found two notches which keep the shield in place. Was pretty tight as I tried to removed them for the first time . And mine had the gasket properly working.
Thanks again.

How do you like wearing 6800 for hours
Is it normal that the mask is getting wet inside the ''breathing area'' after some time time on the face ? or do I do something wrong ?
Morider95 hey, yes :) it’s just the moisture from your breath. You can wipe it away after you finish :)
okay nice, thanks for the fast answer!
Have you tried 3M 6000 respiratir when using Mr.Super Clear? Is it recommendable?
I tried to use 3M 7502 but the smell of the mask is too strong. It filters the chemicals but on the other hand I'm inhaling the smell of the chemicals the mask is made of, so I don't really see the point of it. They should use better quality materials.
Where did you buy it from?
@@MattHutton AliExpress. But the packaging looks original. I don't know...
@@banka990 you’re most likely not going to get original or approved 3M products on AliExpress. It need to be an official distributor or off a reputable website like Amazon.
@@MattHutton In any case, I would not risk with the same brand again. Do you know some other manufacturers that make high quality respirators? I need it for ethyl alcohol vapor.
The mask doesn't smell at all, especially if you wash it after every use. You may be smelling your breath condensation that forms on the inside surfaces.
Any comment about the 3m instructions recommending no facial hair? Thanks for description of full mask seal problem.
Hey Soundhill,
Great to hear from you! There is nothing on facial hair in the instructions. You could try a positive and negative pressure seal check. I've attached a photo here for you :] imgh.us/168.jpg
Various instructions of different manufacturers of different masks always recommend: no facial hair.
Ideally, you want to be completely clean-shaven. This is to ensure a good seal everywhere the respirator makes contact with your skin. Per OSHA guidelines, shaving is a requirement for certain styles and amount of facial hair. However my employer has allowed me to fit-test my patients who have facial hair, as long as it's not significant enough to affect obtaining a good seal. As such, I perform the fit test anyway. If my patients do not pass, I have them shave. There's no other option. Simply doing a positive or negative seal check is not a good substitute for a fit test in ensuring a good seal when you have facial hair. Better to be safe than sorry.
It is common knowledge that facial hair prevents the mask from performing 100% of it’s intented purpose I would advise not having any facial hair and having your hair backwards if putting the fullface on
In the usa if you need a respirator for work it is required by OSHA law that you do not have any facial hair
My question is
Does the mask shield is paint proof?
Do you have to clean the face shield after use to remove any paint stain or particles?
Hey MrJeromegon , it come with a removable and replaceable plastic film for the visor :)
Well wow I just wanted a gas mask to keep out smoke (burning wood etc.). I also want a half face mask like the first one you presented, but I don't like the look of the circle filter most masks use.
Whitch mask do you recommend for smoke protection?
For the half mask respirator does it for up glasses
Was the gasket problem solved?
Can you please clarify whether this mask (6800) is effective in protecting against covid 19? What filters should I look for?
Should help with protection. Don’t know for certain. You need to cover your eyes too. If you get a p3 rated filter you should get the best particle filtration. mybreathbuddy.com/blogs/blog/difference-between-p1-p2-and-p3-filters see the difference between p1 and p3 here
