Fun fact, Pad Thai the dish was created as an answer to WWII and floods in the 1930s in order to minimize rice consumption. It has since become a national dish and is beloved world wide.

Similar story with instant Ramen. It was invented after ww2 when Japan couldn't farm because of nuclear fallout so they had to import wheat from the US as grain. Instant Ramen was the only thing close to Japanese that they could come up with that was based on Wheat as every other solution tasted horrible

There are actually three base restaurant “styles” that Thai restaurant owners must choose from, ranging from casual to upscale. Everything from the menus down to the decor in the restaurant. The Thai government also routinely audits restaurants for adherence to the proper protocols, food quality etc. So if you ever wonder why Thai food is shockingly consistent at restaurants regardless of the city or country, that’s why!

This happened in Australia too starting around 2002 and I always wondered why! Every town and suburb used to have at least one token Chinese restaurant going all the way back to the early 80s, and then Thai (specifically serving up pad thai and roti) slowly started taking their place. Then Japan came knocking, then Malay & Korean, and now the barn door is wide open. Mystery solved!

@@notjimpickens7928 I agree that Thai food is just okay.
I lived in Thailand for work for a bit, but I actually preferred some of the Indian food there.
Their seafood salad, mango sticky rice, and tom yum were cheap and decent, but I hated the smell of fermented fish sauce (smells kinda like a dairy farm mixed with wet dog and dirty socks), and it took a few weeks for my nose to get desensitized. I took a bite of a mango snack from 711 and am forever haunted by the taste... I can't think about it without feeling sick. There are a lot of snacks that I think a lot of Americans would find gross.
But it is cool that Thailand's government supported and invested in their people's restaurants abroad. Good way to promote their country and get people to have a favorable view of them.

Good to know I'm not the only one who'd seen this covered before. Sam from Wendover also made a video about this, after the press had already reported on it.

Thai food is alright. Not good or bad. Other cultures don’t need to do that… their food is so good on their own that people naturally eat there… unlike this forced Thai bs.

WHY?! I think someone should take a deep dive into why they are doing this. I mean, saying anything bad against one of them is extremely illegal and strongly punished. Is it merely a way to increase Tourism, is money sent back to Thailand, are they trying to export Thais, are they wanting to have an excuse to have their people all over for seeking forbidden information, or is there something else? Based on my experience, most of these restaurants can't be out of the red. They are usually not busy enough to cover rent. Maybe they would be in the black if they owned the building?
I will say more people are familiar with Thailand than some of their other neighbors.

I like how some countries just have their own unique way of diplomacy and spreading their culture.
You have this, and then the finish sauna diplomacy, and then you have it. The Norwegian way of spreading socialist workers rights through the stock market.
For those that don’t know: in Finland, there is a law that all official buildings need a sauna and this also applies to finish buildings abroad so a lot of diplomacy between Finland and other nations is done in saunas. under Norwegian influence. As you read this.
And Norway uses the stock market in order to force foreign companies to make decisions that favour improved workers rights. so some companies that you thought were purely American might be under Norwegian influence as you read this

It was a form of soft power to create presence in international stage. Thailand gets their diplomacy power from mainly tourism and rice trade. Having the country’s food everywhere around the world promotes both.

Hmm, not disagreeing with this, but just saying when I moved to PGH in 1994 there were Thai restaurants everywhere and Pad Thai was definitely listed as the national dish. And when I did my internship in Hollywood in ‘95 and the studio peeps would take me out for Thai and I would order Pad Thai, they would just roll their eyes about how gauche I was and how Pad Thai was so passé. 🤷 So the Thai government may have launched a program in 2002 but a plethora of Thai restaurants and the idea of Pad Thai as a “National Dish” has been around a lot longer than that, at least in the US.

The only time I dared to try thai food was with my work buddies because they said that they had not put spices on it. When tried it it was super bland and I did not like it at all. I didn’t know what any of the spices on the table was either so I couldn’t make it taste any better.
I’m autistic and I don’t like spices, not even black pepper.

Johnny Harris's reason for so many Thai restaurants in the US is fanciful, and even sensationsl. Perhaps, as he claimed, the Thai government had succeeded with their program to train armies of Thai chefs, but leave it the Chinese, who "smelled" an opportunity. By "following their collective nose," the Chinese were led to open and own AaLL the "Thai" restaurants in NYC. 😮
And who do you think owns and operates ALL the "Japanese" restaurants in NYC? Give yourself a Kewpie Doll if you said the Chinese. 😱🤣🤪
Note to Johnny: Never underestimate the entrepreneurship and desire of the Chinese to make a buck, or a Yuan.😝😝😝

As a man who loves almost all foods, from everywhere in most every form ... they say the way to a mans heart is through his stomach.. I can vouch for that. Nothing is quite so comforting as a belly full of good quality, good tasting food. Allah loves wonderous variety. Cheers, namaste, amen, etc.
I tell you what thai stick bud is pretty sweet too and I rarely smoke but they nailed that also.

Um, you could also say that there are so many McDonald's, Starbucks, KFC (even pop eyes are starting) in China. American brands are doing the exact same thing I guess and Russia misses this so much that they are making fake brands like "Vkusna i Toshka(fake Macaas)" just to curb the nostalgia of losing these brands.
In China at least in Shanghai, you could go to Walmart, Cheesecake factory, Costco, Disneyland etc (Beijing also has Universal studios). Although I believe the Chinese government officials will probably avoid using iPhones and Teslas for national security purposes.
