I've lived in Stafford for 50+ years. It's still a nice town, but it's a shame to see so many empty shops, and the market and Guildhall being shut down. That kind of thing is happening everywhere though. The cost of running a business has increased considerably due to rising rent and utility bills, plus many people shop online these days. The market had been dying for a long time, but in September last year the remaining traders were given just 3 weeks notice of it closing, which is a joke.
I bet it was thriving back in the day. One of my friends wanted to set up her own salon. It was in an area where there were quite a few empty properties. The rents and business rates were astronomical. She has gone mobile instead. No wonder places are in the state they are in.
I had a girlfriend in the 90s that spent 6 months in nearby Drake Hall open prison. (Eccleshawl) She got 6 hours out on open visits so Stafford was the nearest place to go. They were both on their last legs at that point anyway - town centres are never going to be what they were 20-30 years ago, as seen throughout the UK. I’d argue the new retail centre has been a lifeline for the Town in general - and brings people in from other areas that wouldn’t have visited otherwise.
Hahaha funny that billy. Gotta admit I’m waiting on your videos now. Who thought someone just cruising around the normal could be so interesting fella. Big up Billy

Come to Tamworth Bill, not far from Brum or Stafford. Some rough outer areas here! Apparently was once voted one of the roughest nights out not so long back!
Hello Bill. Staffords a decent place to walk around, certainly historically speaking. That historic building next to McDonalds in town is where King Charles 1st rested his weary head in the Civil war. Just up the hill out of town going west is Stafford castle with an excellent attendant museum. Back in the centre is the old Stafford court with art gallery and museum and other interesting artifacts. Keep walking the good walk pal.
All high streets the same, 2 banks, 5 fastfoods, starbucks/costa/nero, boots, Tui, 2-3 pubs, and some family shops that struggling to survive, tesco express, Iceland and Greggs
I lived in Stafford back then when you were inside, my flat backed on to the prison so I could often hear the inmates shouting down from the windows. I remember having a pint in that Bear pub whilst watching Kevin Campbell score the winner for Everton at Anfield.
I like how in a lot of towns you visit Billy the shops are not covered in as a lot are in indoor malls now. Where I am in East Kilbride near Glasgow ours are all under cover. Seems okay looks some nice shops!,
Basically town centres were killed stone dead by supermarkets and shopping malls on “ out of town” sites where people could 1) save money 2) park for free. Also, little independent shops got ruined by greedy landlords wanting extortionate rents for the buildings. It’s basic economics and convenience. Some town centres are uniquely different, like Chester for example. Stafford is fairly typical. The homelessness issue is a lot more complicated and we should be careful not to “ politicise” it, as people find themselves on the streets for many unfortunate reasons ( sometimes of their own making tbh ).

Yeah business rates are absolutely extortionate now. Its a shame for people trying to expand x
Top of the world in my day 70 s 😊
Thanks for the visit to Stafford last time I was there in 2000 there was a big Sainsbury store
Seems nice clean and looks like it’s not been invaded with rubber dinghies yet!
I live here, i promise you it HAS
It has everywhere is
Yup it sure has….
@@letsgetdigging7418 yes 💯
get ur head checked lad
I had a girlfriend in the 90s that spent 6 months in nearby Drake Hall open prison. (Eccleshawl) She got 6 hours out on open visits so Stafford was the nearest place to go. Parts of it reminded me of Chester back in the day but it's obviously gone down the nick since then. Great video as ever Billy 👍
Visit Dewsbury in West Yorkshire at some point, whole town is just derelict.
Some other suggestions of places you haven't done yet would be Wakefield, Castleford, Leigh, Bolton, Hartlepool, Luton and Wolverhampton
Saville in dewsbury
thats where rolf harris was imprisoned I think.Been a few years since I been Stafford but used to like it,the town centre was okay and some decent pubs.
Stafford is a beautiful place, was happy to rent a 1 bed flat there, go shopping in the old market, go the park see the small animal habitats, 2 mcdonalds, bought my 1st vape there 2014 happy days, Miss it
The Riverside shopping development at 13:01 killed off the town centre/Guildhall market.
The councillors should be put in prison.
They were both on their last legs at that point anyway - town centres are never going to be what they were 20-30 years ago, as seen throughout the UK.
I’d argue the new retail centre has been a lifeline for the Town in general - and brings people in from other areas that wouldn’t have visited otherwise.
good to see success on the channel racking up alot of views , keep it up matey
Hahaha funny that billy. Gotta admit I’m waiting on your videos now. Who thought someone just cruising around the normal could be so interesting fella. Big up Billy
Thank you 🙏
Greyfriars butcher's..thats the name of my street ..but without the butcher bit ...good vid billy ...👍👍...
Thank you Billy 🎉
Great again topman 👍🏼👊🏼
Liking the channel. Sad how the internet and big supermarkets have killed off the small traders. Born here and come back now. Used to get dragged around the market as a kid. You should take a look at the small villages. There all flooded just as bad.
Loving yur filming billy. Look forward to yur daily posts
What a horrible imposing prison.is it still used?
Again some lovely old buildings. And look how clean the shopping area is..and no noise x
Well never thought you'd visit boring Stafford. I'm gutted. I missed you would of loved to say hello.
Cheers Billy
All The Best for 2025 pal✊️💪
All the languages you know , is amazing.
hahaa 😂 best place to go shoplifting 😂 i knew you would make all those journeys out of your town well worthwhile with a few...bags full.... of take homes haha 😂
Bills on the daily grind 🤙🤙top stuff Scouse x
Come to Tamworth Bill, not far from Brum or Stafford. Some rough outer areas here! Apparently was once voted one of the roughest nights out not so long back!
That's the first place I was in a hostel at the start of my journey of homelessness. The bethany project when I was 16, wow
Don't forget the Turkish barber
@@saudade2745 one of those too
Come to Stone in the Summer when we have street food evenings.
If anyone mentions Stafford, I just think of Altern8 , cos that's where they are from.
Another place that seems to have had the soul ripped out of it.
Billy can speak quite a few languages. He should work as some sort of Translator. It’s great how he talks to people
You want to visit Stafford castle it's beautiful
Yes yes another shit hot billy show !
Thankyou so much!
I lived in Stafford for a while with my scouse girlfriend who is from Wavertree, but Billy Stafford is a town mate and not a city, best regards 👍🏻
Another amazing upload billy thanks stay safe have an amazing night
Was once a nice affluent town… Well welcome to dystopia….
Seems okay looks some nice shops!,
Laura Cleary?
last time i went To stafford it was so clean and pristine Beautiful It looks like the rest of the UK now maybe not quite as bad but its gone aswel
When was that? The 1950s?
@@Si_Mondo haha Not quite 90s though yeah
Basically town centres were killed stone dead by supermarkets and shopping malls on “ out of town” sites where people could 1) save money 2) park for free. Also, little independent shops got ruined by greedy landlords wanting extortionate rents for the buildings. It’s basic economics and convenience. Some town centres are uniquely different, like Chester for example. Stafford is fairly typical. The homelessness issue is a lot more complicated and we should be careful not to “ politicise” it, as people find themselves on the streets for many unfortunate reasons ( sometimes of their own making tbh ).
Anthor good video billy 👏
So funny when you kid people on Billy they believe you it's so funny !
I tell you what billy put his miles in , fair play and best of luck to him ❤
