I have some silver fillings left, which were put in during my K-12 school years. During my 21-year active duty career, most of these were replaced, when needed, by composite fillings. The US military’s budget doesn’t include issuing gold fillings to the troops. :)

Love your videos! I agree on gold restorations being the best. I have 9 gold restorations, and I absolutely love them!! Hope you are able to get them one day too like you want to, they are simply the best of the best.

Dentist here. Just wanted to say, what a great and informative video! I would like to point out one thing though, I would say amalgam is a bit better than you make it out to be here. All other things being equal, teeth with amalgam fillings have a better long term prognosis than teeth with composites.
When it comes to gold, I completely agree with you. They are far superior to everything else, and as close as you get to tooth structure, which is a really good thing. They wear exactly like tooth structure, and they contract and expand exactly like tooth structure with changes in temperature. Another fun fact about gold is that it can't break, and that isn't even exaggeration, it literally can't break. Even if you make it really thin. That means more tooth structure can be preserved, and you can even cover parts of the tooth, let's say a cusp, which you worry will break off, with a thin layer of gold to protect it. I could go on forever, but I just want to add on what you mentioned about patients having old gold inlays. I have patients that have gold inlays that are 70 years old, and they are still in perfect condition. If you take care of them, they will last a lifetime. That can't be said about any other dental restoration :)
And yes, I do have gold restorations myself (and amalgam restorations, you don't have to worry about galvanic shock, it's mostly a myth)
    Keep up the good work!

I've had a lot of good luck with non invasive RMGI fillings after my resin fillings kept falling off. The non invasive RMGI have lasted 2x long as resin so far and the awesome thing is they can basically be redone over and over w/o harming the tooth (I have class v non carious lesions). Hard part is finding a dentist willing to do that way, very bad for business. Other downside is most dentists don't carry RMGI in multiple shades so it's not the most ideal color but I'm happy to trade that for avoiding the drill/fill bs.

Is there a gold filling giveaway happening anytime soon?

davfedya hahah I wish! I wish dentistry was more affordable, but remember majority of people could prevent the need for a filling in the first place with proper brushing and flossing, and those are much cheaper than any filling material!

Some or even most do! Just have to ask :) they can make a cast/impression of the tooth in question and send to a lab to make a gold inlay.

I wonder if you can get an MRI if you have gold fillings.

Great question! Gold does not interact with the magnetic component of MRI, so yes you can

I don't even know any dentists around here that do gold fillings anymore.
I have to agree about the silver fillings. I had some of those in my molars & they ended up expanding & cracking those molars in half. So, those teeth were not repairable. 😭

Sorry to hear! Yeah not all dentists do gold work. I found one in my area, hopefully he doesn’t retire when I need some gold work!

Heyy, can gold fillings be used for a tooth after RCT?? I'd like to know cuz gold seems to be the safest option after loads of reasearch on dental filling materials.

I would talk to the dentist who does your root canal to see if it’s a good option; I don’t see why not but it depends on your particular situation what restoration may be better for your tooth.
