Today we're back with another story! Last time it was all about Apple; this time, we're talking lawsuits, Motorola, and TechnoBuffalo. Grab some popcorn and get comfortable because here's the story of how the Droid Bionic almost ended my RUclips channel and business.

I appreciate these storytimes. Spill the tea, my friend. A lot of people don't know how insane some of these companies act behind the scenes.
We got stories to tell!!!
Hi Shannon!
“Spill the tea”??? Or did you mean ‘Spill the Beans’ 🤔
@@LuvvSURYA they mean the same thing, just one is newer than the other
@@micaiahreese : Newer 😂😂😂. In that case, I’d like to formalise “Spill the Coffee” because coffee and I don’t agree with each other. I luuuuuuuuuuuuv tea. Not green tea but first flush silver tips from Darjeeling.
“That was crazy for a phone that was going to be forgotten in 4 months”
Kudos to you for not snitching.
Thanks for sharing John. I remember that time and thanks for doing that.
Very Powerful Story, feel for you Bud, that must of been such a horrible time and scary with the thought of Jail. Thank you so much for sharing this story. You are a very strong and brave person to tell us this and a inspiration to us all. ❤
John I think you're finding a niche here. Keep telling these stories about the darker side of tech journalism.
I’m having fun doing it.
@@jon4lakers and we wanna hear what you have to say.
@@jon4lakers I would definitely like to see more
@@jon4lakers I remember wanting to write for Techno Buffalo but being too young! Started the YT channel when I was 13 right around when you started!
I hope he doesn't get sued more.
Hey Jon, I've been following since initial days of Technobuffalo. Glad to see how much you grew over the years. Good luck & All the best buddy.
Appreciate you!!
same and i am really appreiative of these tales
Me too! Remember geeking out with Jon on the latest HTCs. Much respect to what he stood for and fought for.
Same, so happy you are here.
All attorneys henceforth must use “C’mon, bro” when filing a motion for reconsideration. Thanks for sharing that story! I almost went down the tech reviewer path because of you.
You'll always be the Maverick of the tech RUclips community. People don't realize how much you and Techno Buffalo have impacted and ignited the love for tech in an entire generation. You're a hero to a lot of people. When these stories of struggle, David vs Goliath are surfacing after such a long time; the world is changing and evolving and becoming fearless because of heroes like you. What you didn't earn in a fat bank account, you earned as RESPECT in the eyes of thousands of people around the world. Godspeed brother 👍
I appreciate you.
That's actually a really funny statement; "I outlasted Motorola". So many of the tech companies have fallen and only exist as a rented or borrowed name.
Great story. One thing I recommend to everyone in this space is to get a good insurance policy that covers legal defense costs for things like this. Most of the time the smaller party caves not because they're in the wrong but they can't afford to continue the litigation. These insurance policies are expensive but a heck of a lot cheaper than a lawsuit.
There are insurance policies as a tech RUclipsr?
@@mr_red13 There are general errors and omissions / business liability policies that are out there for media organizations.. My agent had to work quite a bit on finding one that fit - there's definitely a gap in the marketplace!
@@LonSeidman thank you!
I’ve watched you since 2008/2009 and want to say that your one of the people that ignited my passion for technology.
thanks for the brutally honest anecdote, I as a person who was sued for the first time and was left broke 4 Years ago empathize for you and who ever has to go through this, you will get through it and pick up the pieces if you just hang in there and start all over.
I watched this and thought, wow I remember that phone and the leaks. Never knew the story behind. Gotta say Jon, you are one of the reason I enjoy tech now. Watching your videos as a teen and learning was amazing.
Thank you.
Hey Jon. I’m 22 now but i started watching techno buffalo when i was at the beginning stages of middle school. So glad to see you still here. You’ve always been a solid guy from my view. Absolutely love the way you word things and express yourself. Seem like a very humble guy. Keep being you man!!! Love your work!
We all love hearing these stories Jon!!! I remember I used to follow you and your company almost all day every day in those times. These are the type of videos that make the rest of us realize we are all human! ❤
I remember watching one of the first few TechnoBuffalo office tours back in 2012/2013 and you pointed out some lawsuit papers that you had framed in your office. I don't believe you went into great detail about it back then, but it's cool to hear about it now, all these years later lol
Alej, for me its the fact that you remember internet tea from 10 years ago. lol!
@@PHlophe Hahaha I remember the most random things
You're always the OG of RUclips tech reviewers to me Jon. It's crazy thinking now how far we've come along, looking back and hearing stories like this. Keep it up and all the very best to you!
I’m glad you survived that ordeal. I’ve been subbed (or at least watching) to your channel since the “Jon4Lakers” days. Your channel was my intro to tech RUclipsr’s like MKBHD, LTT, UrAvgConsumer, etc. You actually inspired my friend and I to start our own tech channel, but it never panned out because we had no experience in making videos and editing.
Keep up the great work. Looking forward to seeing your take on the iPhone 14
🙏🙏🙏
Jon feels like the uncle that isn’t your uncle that always wants what’s best for you and gives your great lessons.
Been watching you since “jon4lakers”
John, you’re a natural storyteller. Loved it. Hope we get more.
Freakin' love these true life behind the person tech stories Jon, as far as I can make out you are the only one doing this sort of thing. You come across really well and genuine. Please keep this up! And on a side note, I can't believe Shannon Morse replied in these comments. Shannon is an awesome techie
Amazing story Jon. Thanks for sharing.
You’ve always been one of my ‘go to’ tech channels, and will continue be in the future. Behind the scenes, the hard work and sacrifice it takes to run a business like this is not something most people consider, so it’s nice to get a ‘warts and all’ perspective
Keep doing what you do bro 😎
I've never felt so proud of a subscription. You had my respects from the beginning, Technobuffalo days, and it just got even higher. 🙌👊👏💪
From Jamaica 🇯🇲.
Imagine how many other tech youtubers are in or have been in a similar situation. Thanks for sharing and good to know you came out triumphant. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for sharing. I remember someone (you?) mentioning when you made some changes a couple of years ago that you had been quite frustrated/burnt out and were looking forward to the change, and this sure sounds like a contributing factor in that. Thank you so much for your effort, and hard work that you put in for all of us.
Thanks for sharing your story… it’s sad but you came through it- and look at where you’re at… things happen for a reason ❤️
🙏🙏
To think I’ve been watching you for 10+ years and I had no idea about this. It’s wild to think that you may actually be my oldest subscription that I didn’t grow out of. Granted on a different channel but still followed you through the transition. Keep on keepin on man. It’s fun growing with you 🖖🏼
Technobuffalo was my go to tech channel on RUclips back in the days and the name of the channel was way ahead of its time. Much appreciation to you for revealing us your ups and downs of your life.
Wow this is crazy. When I first subscribed to your channel SOOOO many years ago, the opening statement used to be “Jon Rettinger from TechnoBuffalo here" and I always wondered what happened. Thank you for sharing John
thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your story. i remember those early tech youtube days. your channel is probably one of my oldest subscriptions. i hope you continue to share your journey.
I'm a long time consumer of online content and especially tech reviews. I love hearing these stories from the "wild west" era of tech websites. You're right, we've come a long way from back then. Sometimes I do miss those days where it was a little more chaotic and less polished like it is now a days.
I would really love to hear more of these stories. This basically confirms the brands are just here for money and will black list or go after anyone who they don't like. I watch very tech channels now as it seems they just want to be in the good grace of these companies and literally praise everything they do. Thanks to RUclips algorithm, I found your channel a couple of years ago. Keep doing an awesome job and kudos to your team too. Please never change. ❤🙌
of course whether it is Samsung, apple, Microsoft..u name it that is why I can never understand some hardcore fans trying to shard out of their free time to defend or get into arguments with others explaining how/why a decision made for a for profit organization .. at the end of the day, they all love our money and only our money so even with the brands I love, I dont go crazy in love like some of the fans with their which is better. why iOS is better why android is better ....etc
It also shows the current state of the wider media in that they are not paying attention to what is happening. The New York times should be all over these types of cases but instead they are hyper focused on some political issue that doesn't even matter that much.
Thanks for sharing. Glad you won the case and didn’t give up! 👍🏻
Thank you so much for sharing. I’m a long time subscriber and I had begun to wonder where you were and what was going on with you. I’m very sure your story will help someone along the way, so I say. Thank you for keep on keeping on. God bless you and your family.
Appreciate you.
I love it when you share these stories. Thank YOU for creating a legal president for these situations that have protected so many of us after you. Truly, we are standing on the shoulders of Giants! I appreciate you, man. 🤘
Thank you man!
I remember watching your iphone 3G "unboxing" back in the day when you were still called Jon4Lakers and sitting in front of your computer. It's crazy to think of all the twists and turn life has taken. Good to see you're still uploading.
Great storytelling of a very scary time!!!! I know the feeling (but in a lesser factor) with Apple as you know, and that was already scary! Well done standing your ground!
Appreciate you so much man.
I know that feeling..I felt it a few times in my business life too. You read the first few lines of the letter and your stomach literally sinks. Unfortunately entrepreneurs often feel it a few times. So much I even wrote a book about it! Good to hear you made it through and no doubt made you stronger and wiser.
Being sued has been and is one of my biggest fears running my own tiny company, by some patent troll or other big company that want me (and what I have built) out of their way (or, the fruits of what I've achieved), with the law in their hand, can actually do so, ruin everything I've worked for, and potentially destroy me and my family as well...
Seek legal advice and to try and be prepared for such attacks.
Jon walked so I could run!
🙏🙏
Jon I’m truly sorry you had to go through that. It’s really scary and horrible to be put through that. You stuck with your principles and prevailed. Thank you for sharing this with us. You are awesome Jon! 🙏🏻
Been watching your content for years (since Jon4Lakers!). It’s fascinating hearing you tell the stories behind your growth… thank you for sharing!
Thanks for sharing Jon. Your history and backstory is very insightful and shows just how hard it is to start, run and grow a RUclips channel!
Such a cool story to see, I remember watching a ton of techno Buffalo back in the day. Glad to see you still making content Jon!
oh, man! Can completely relate to what you went through. Kudos to you for standing your ground. Keep these stories coming!
WOW, this is the best example that behind the "always smiley" tech RUclipsrs that we love to see, there are hard time stories and battles that they have to fight for their rights, and we don't even imagine it.
John, thank you for sharing this, and I'm happy to know that you have succeeded. I follow you since TechnoBuffalo. 💯
We're all human. Bring yourself back to reality sometimes. Everyone has demons .
I really appreciate you sharing this kind of inside baseball stuff. As someone who's been watching you for years I remember when these videos came out but now I get to hear the details. Thank you!
I've been following you for a long time. It just shows how hard you have worked to get to where you are now. Its truly inspiring.
I had no idea you were going through that and I've watched your videos for years now. Thanks for another great story Jon!
Good for staying true to yourself brother, respect for making the right decision, when the right decision was the hardest to make. Long time supporter here, stay strong.
Appreciate you.
Techno Buffalo and Phone Dog where my go to channels, miss Kravitz, glad you stock around brother.
Great and informative video. I and (I think) many others, sometimes forget, or maybe just a bit naive, or simply just don’t understand the hard work it takes to be a good RUclipsr/Journalist.
This was one of the things that I hadn’t considered you have to battle as a RUclipsr.
I enjoy your content very much, and love the honesty you share with all of us. 👍
Thank you for sharing this story with us. I loved the last one on Apple and I loved this one as well. This would have been a really hard decision and I’m glad you stood your ground. Keep going!!
I appreciate the videos. You have always done an outstanding job from day one. I have been around since before your lawsuit. The only thing I can say is that I'm glad you are still here today and you fighting the lawsuit forever changed the tech community for the better.
I love your story videos jon. I’m so glad you won and still kicking ass today. Been a big fan so many years.
Thanks for the sharing. You are a good human being. You deserve all the best John. Following you since the beginning. What a ride. 👏👏👏
What an incredible story. I have followed you from your beginning days at Techno Buffalo and I hope those who have followed appreciate what you have gone through. To me, you are the king of tech reviewers.
This one hell of a story. Thank you so much for sharing it. I've been watching your channel since the beginning, and it's amazing to see how we all grow together and relate to the stories. Good on. you for staying true to yourself. Kudos, my friend.
Thanks for the story. I am a long time follower/subscriber of your videos. I am glad to hear you made it through that.
I really appreciate this story , especially my early tech tube consisted of you , Aaron from phone dog , MKBHD, Soliderknows best and Detriotborg. Y’all would always have fond memories in my mind
I read various posts from your websites back then, was back then in college. Don't know how much hard it was back then to report such news. Great Job Jon!!.
Jon you’re one of the best RUclipsrs ever. Ive been following you since the technobuffalo and jon4lakers days. I use to watch all your unboxing videos! Seeing these stories you never know what a person is going through and i must say you’ve held yourself well during those times. Look at you now! Much continued success to you and your family.
I honestly love these story times. Please keep sharing
Hey man I salute your efforts it seems being noble and good doesn't happen anymore without some sort of payoff so I respect that and have loved your stuff since day 1 TB
Loving this content dude. I watched only a few of your technobuffalo vids back in the day when one of my mates used to love the big knife.
But yeah this story and the apple story is compelling content. I love it. I just hope it doesn’t make your business connections sour.
Stay well dude. I’m really enjoying getting stuck into your channel.
Bro !! I didn't know you were this awesome. But seriously that was an amazing story. I always used to wondered what happened to Techno Buffalo. Jon you're intact, you kept your integrity, and you are solid. I look up to you now.
Been a subscriber of since his channel was named technobuffalo. He's the OGs of tech reviewers and it's unfathomable to think he had to go through something as terrifying and insane as that. All that for a junk Android phone that's long in the dust.
I’m so sorry Tim that you went through this. You’re an awesome guy and a great RUclipsr to say the least. Keep up the good work. A big hug to you. Have a wonderful weekend. 😉👍🏽💯
Of course they forced you not to countersue, I'd be so mad, they start it and don't want to be responsible for starting it, ridiculous. Big enough to squeeze the small people but not big enough to own up to their actions. Good on you for fighting for what was right ❤️
A fully functioning media would have investigated this case and pointed a journalistic flash light on it. Modern media is a shadow of what it should be.
They can all tell you what Trump said but not one of them are paying attention to the state of society.
Jon. I have been watching your videos since the very beginning. They were great then and still are. I very much enjoy these stories and glad things worked out the way they did. Keep up the good work 😊
This looks like a Netflix show. Well done man. I would also make a video advising other creators on what NOT to do or what are the best practices. I think not everyone has to go nuts just to run stories to get views and things like that. I think creators should look more at why they are doing this, and finding that answer, will help them along the way. You can be part of that movement.
Great story! Jon4Lakers I’ve watched your videos since the iPhone 4 and now we’re a week away from the iPhone 14!
Appreciate your support.
more power to you, thanks for sharing your story ❤
Been watching your videos for over 8 years now, starting back to those jon4lakers console wars videos! Keep up the great content
Wow! What a story. Saw your video of Apple calling you and yelling at you. And now this. RUclips tech content creation isn't easy. Us viewers only see the fun part where you guys enjoy all new tech (some for free). Very well said that tech wasn't 10 years ago, what it is today. Power to you, Jon! Here's to many more years of awesome tech content.
Incredible video! Thank you so much for sharing, Jon. You are clearly a man of great integrity. Please keep posting stuff like this!
I remember watching you back in the day, glad to see you're still around.
Keep killing it my friend 🙌
You did the right thing .. thank you for sharing this story.. RESPECT!
What an incredible story. I have so much love and respect for you. I hope people realize just how big of a role you've played in the tech space on RUclips.
🙏
Thank you for telling your story and the legal precedent you helped set. I’ve been watching since formally TechnoBuffalo and visiting the site since the beginning. They you for always bringing a unique perspective on the topics and tech you cover and always showing some form of passion in the tech people have available to them everyday.
you stayed strong and didn't give in to their nonsense ! I've been with you since back in the techno buffalo days and will always be here. its people like you that Inspire people like me to fight for what you want in life and never give up.
Damn you’re just going through it
I hope you’re okay man
Your an incredible man and one of morals and principles. May good fortune and luck now follow you. Keep strong and keep posting. We love you here in the uk.
These videos are so good. I love this new style
Wow..I been watching you since Tech Buffalo and never thought anything but tech was going on behind the scenes. I think a lot of these big companies try to crush & muscle channels because they know that’s how you make your living so they take advantage. It would have been one thing if they ask you to take down whatever video you had up and walk away but they kept pushing…Glad you stood your ground and your here to share these stories. It’s definitely scary to deal with when you don’t have experience in knowing about things like this…
Thanks for sharing this story. It's fascinating to hear anecdotes about a medium that was taking its first steps. I commend you for holding on to your principles!
I am a lawyer (Not from the US) and where I am from, the losing side of a lawsuit always have to pay for the legal costs of the winning side. This aspect of US law is surreal.
Appreciate this story. Back in the day I would watch you and Phone dog Aaron religiously. Fed my tech hunger.
I remember you telling this story before but it's great to hear it now in full. Your bravery in the face of corporate giants trying to squash our basic rights and freedoms is inspiring.
Insane. You are the first I ever subbed to, your unboxing of your first MacBook!
Crazy story. I'm sorry you had to through this. Luckily, things have changed for the better in tech journalism these days. I think you winning the case and holding on to your beliefs played a part of it as well.
Jon, long time followers. Will never forget the technobuffalo days. Keep crushing it! Have a great weekend
This is a great video!! I’m happy that you shared your story. I hope your doing much better now.
I've been watching Jon since i was a 13yo kid researching the HTC Evo, so i know he is a founding father of Online-based Journalism, but, wow, i never knew he did this. Jon, your actions and moral compass during The Rettinger v Motorola case simultaneously created and saved Online Journalism. That is massive. As the world sprints toward a digital based experience, history will have no choice but to focus on it. Young adults centuries from now can and will reference this case to protect their journalistic liberties in court cases that we can only begin to imagine. That is the power of morals. On behalf of the current and future journalists, thank you.
I started watching techno buffalo, quiet young, I was around 10-11 when I started, and I must say I missed techno buffalo growing up, but you were through my young growing up tech enthusiast stage and still I am and I could never miss your video ever, till this day I've been your follower, you are stronger than ever before God speed to you! and hope nothing like this will ever come back ever again.
Wow. Just a crazy story and major stance you made. Thanks, Jon.
I'm really glad that you have come so far from it. I hope you keep on going and making great content!
Good story. You were one of the first ones there when I started looking up smart phone content on RUclips. I remember being excited then bummed when you and Michael Fisher tried to make something work and it didn't last. I liked this video, maybe you could talk about you and Michael next? Another idea, maybe you could talk about similar content creators that aren't around anymore, or fill the void in other areas. I miss GizmoSlip, you could do drop test on all these new phones and I would watch that all day. lol. Ooo! Do a "Tier List" of the most popular tech channels! I would love that too! Just giving you ideas, I love your work!
Be proud of yourself man, because we all are proud of you! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing this story. The world needs people like you that stand up for whats right. Your brave and bold actions quite literally changed the trajectory of how tech journalism became what it is.
Nice video Jon, it is great seeing that despite these incidents from Apple and Motorola that you have shared here on your channel that you have been able to push through it and have continued making video content!
Wow, thanks for sharing. Amazing. You were so strong and did not give up and fought, even though it was hard.
