Have you started the book on Vatican I we talked about? It makes clear just how desperate the minority was to get even the slightest qualification on papal power into the text. Instead of consenting or even declining their urgent requests, Pius IX and the "majority" (of course, that's a majority formed out of an uprooted and papally remade French episcopate and an absurdly disproportionate representation of Italian bishops) rubbed their noses in it by adding "and not by the consent of the Church." The historical context makes it obvious what is being referenced- the exercise of the charism of infallibility in no way depends or has any relation to episcopal consent or even consultation.
My jaw actually dropped at some of the things Elijah said. Effectively- "it's not possible for the pope to define contrary to the consent of the Church because whatever the pope decrees is by definition by consent of the Church!" If the Spirit genuinely is energizing in this charism, then sure, that would be impossible. Problem is that we know from tradition that the charism of infallibility was operative in and only in the co-operation of the synod and its primate- since, as the Fifth Council said, "two are better than one" and citing *Matthew 18* of all places, "where *two or three* are gathered in my Name, there I am among them."
That passage from the Fifth Council spurred me to dive deeper into Matthew 16-18 to see what insight it has on the nature of primacy and collegiality. There is a *lot* there that I haven't yet done any material on yet.

I feel the most exposing thing one can do to Mr. Yasi's argument here is simply beg the question: supposing his formulation is true (leaving aside the massive historical evidence to the contrary), and papal infallibility must include concilliar consent, why bother having papal infallibility at all? Why bother defining a doctrine using verbiage that exists nowhere in the first millennium if what you truly meant by it is the relationship any bishop has with his local synod? The answer to anybody honest with himself is because the doctrine being defined is not simply concilliarism, else there would have been no need to define it at all.

  • @SaltShack

What ever duties or obligations the Pope has are completely irrelevant when juxtaposed to his authority and more importantly the lack of consequence if he fails in his duties and obligations. The Pope cannot be removed, Correct. A subsequent Pope can’t reverse a previous Pope or even his direct predecessor, correct? What was in the mind of the Bishops a Vatican II is also irrelevant because there is no need to attempt to recreate their intent as we have their action. A hermeneutical analysis is stupid, no archeology is required, no newly discovered documents can be revealed to explain history. We can watch it on television in documentaries produced by the Vatican.

@InnocentAlaska I mean, I kinda get your point but in the end, you'll frustrate yourself when you understand that "true" Catholicism is represented perfectly by people who go to rad trad groups like SSPX or FSSP, who even promote latinization and not venerating post schism saints, because as infallibly defined by the pope in papal bull unam sanctam and the council of Florence, there is no salvation outside the Roman pontiff (and it's very explicit, there can't be a more nuanced interpretation). Once you get that, you'll understand that being an eastern catholic is a huge mental gymnastic.
"We accept the pope, even though our liturgy is developed by a schismatic church"
"We accept the pope, even though popes have infallibly decreted that some of our saints should have no salvation (Palamas, Radonezh, Seraphim of Sarov)"
"We commune with other catholics, even though some think our prayer methods are buddhist and satanic"
