    Thanks for the interesting update! The summer is ending, but at least orchids are preparing to bloom and there is so much going on. :)

    An electrician friend of mine says anything above T5 is just wasting $$ for horticultural purposes. Apparently anything larger suffers diminishing returns in photosynthetic light, yet a steady increase in operating costs. Same plant friendly PPFD, yet more expense. Even the bulbs are more expensive. The trade off for larger than T5 is more "human friendly" light.

    like any house orchid grower I have no more space for more orchids. I checked the possibility of a greenhouse but unfortunately the cost of the energy bill would be massive. The downside of not living in a warmer sunnier place...

      I can definitely feel for that. I had a friend who lives in the northern hemisphere and she struggles to get more space. I live in the tropical climate of Indonesia so all my orchids grow outside, but there are orchids like Miltonias, Masdevalias, draculas and certain deciduous orchids that aren't able to grow here.

    2 watt led lights times fifty. You get fifty lights for the price of those large bulbs. Light is also spaced more evenly and will not burn leaves. Honeybees just LOVE milkweed. I wonder if they would utilize Hoya? I believe these two plants are related? What month do those Hoya Bloom?

    I know this is a older video but i am fairly new and have been listening to some of your videos which are very informative and I am a subscriber. I appreciate all your information but I do have a question about reducing the water for certain orchid from Halloween to Valentine’s Day. Do you Apply any fertilizer during that dry period perhaps in the occasional mist. Thank you.

    Hey Brad, Always enjoy these greenhouse tours! Looks like things are doing well for early September. I recently purchased my first Vanda orchid (specifically Vanda 'Miss Joaquim'). Of course I recently did some additional research and discovered they need super bright light and very high (constant) humidity, as they are native to Singapore. I am curious about the Vanda plastic bag you have used here. In the past I tried turkey oven bags (big and clear) , but they have a wide footprint. What kind are you using here? FYI - I am trying an experiment now where I purchased a 24" x 7" vase and I have placed lava rock with water in the bottom for constant humidity. I then hung the Vanda inside along with some Spanish moss. Hopefully it prefers this better. (FYI - I grow indoors in NJ where the summer has been very hot and high humidity. Some days I did not use AC either.)

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  8 лет назад

      You are right, Vandas like it bright and warm and humid. The bag i'm using is a plan old bread bag... I keep it simple when I can. Haha

    • @georgewallace1451
      @georgewallace1451 8 лет назад

      Nice! I couldn't tell it was from a loaf of bread, but it definitely would fit a Vanda perfect! (roughly 7" width). Thanks.

    Hi, just a quick question, why do some of your pots have holes in their sides? Does it have something to do with aerating the roots?

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  7 лет назад

      +Plasma Junkie yes, you are correct. I want some plants to dry faster and get more air to the roots than others. Normally you see this more on my more expensive or delicate plants.

    would it be possible to grow plants in an aquarium with just the basic lighting of the aquarium itself?

    • @JamesThomas-qd7hp
      @JamesThomas-qd7hp 7 лет назад

      well, it depends on what plants you are putting in

    • @Aozorite
      @Aozorite 7 лет назад

      at the moment i have ''Drosera Capenis'', ''Drosera Intermedia'', ''Dionaea Muscipula'', ''Pinguicula Weser'' and ''Sarracenia Barba''. i currently have them standing in front of a window, but as they grow bigger i need to relocate them. and as i only have one room which gets natural sunlight my only other option would have been an aquarium with artificial lighting.

    • @JamesThomas-qd7hp
      @JamesThomas-qd7hp 7 лет назад

      If you keep them in their pots and put moss under the pots, it should work. keep it away from sunlight as the container will warm up more than room temperature and yes, the lights should work. It's essentially called a terrarium and is used often for tropical plants. Lucky for me, I don't have to worry about winter or humidity. Many nepenthes in this videos come from where I live!

    does anybody know how to grow Acorns ??
    right now I have them in pots.

    • @hanzifaction
      @hanzifaction 8 лет назад

      You need to stratify the acorns to get them to germinate. So you'll have keep them in the fridge over winter and plant them in pots in the spring. While in the fridge they need to be kept moist not wet. A mix of half peat moss and half sand in a plastic bag works well. Good luck! It's great endeavor growing trees, especially oak trees from seed.

    • @MrRperez10
      @MrRperez10 8 лет назад

      hanzifaction there's 2 dead trees that fell down during a storm and tons of Acorns were scattered around it. I had already planted each Acorn in the small pot. I'm guessing it's too late to start growing the Acorn since it's already September. My dad already has some good size Acorn trees that are around 6-8 inches in the pot are those safe to survive this upcoming winter or should I bring them in?

    • @hanzifaction
      @hanzifaction 8 лет назад

      +This is my favorite part time job and I hate it That's good to hear you guys are replacing the dead trees. There no such thing as an acorn tree, they are called oak trees. You should let the trees go dormant in the winter as they need the rest, so don't bring them inside. It sounds like they're hardy to your area so they should be fine just in the pots. But to be safe, you can sink the pots in the garden for the winter months. When you do this make sure the rim of the pot sticks out of the soil. Than come spring time you can pull the pots out and place them in a sunny spot.

    • @MrRperez10
      @MrRperez10 8 лет назад

      hanzifaction Thanks for the new info and yes there are thousands of trees behind my backyard. However, several trees are dead in a specific area of the forest and a total of 5-6 trees all mature have fallen. It is very rewarding to see a plant grow strong. So, I feel that it's my responsibility to plant each Acorn in a pot so that a new generation of strong big trees can flourish. Oh yeah and one more question will the snow kill my little Acorn in its pot outside?

    • @gammondog
      @gammondog 8 лет назад

      Whatever you decide to do, you might take out a couple of plants, wrap them in moist sphagnum moss, and place them inside a ziplock for storage in a refrigerator. In case throwing mulch over the pots or storage in a garage fail,you have those bare roots in the fridge as a backup. I rode out my relatively milder winter by storing them covered up with a plastic bag, in a shed that was up against the house. Every couple of weeks I would check the water in the tray. Try to keep them outside for as long as you can and keep an eye out for frost. Early on you can get away with covering them up at night. When the sever cold settles in, you can implement your full winter protection.
